BREAKING: Ace Hawkins wins MWR Missouri Title controversially in St. Louis!

Posted by flairwhoooooo on February 12, 2017

By Brian Kelley

Missouri Wrestling Revival was on hand for a packed house (att. 548) at the historic South Broadway Athletic Club on Feb 11th.  The monster Barackus defended his Missouri Wrestling Revival MO title for the first time since defeating Brandon Espinosa in January. His opponent was dangerous “The” Ace Hawkins, who has set his sights (for quite some time) on the MWR Missouri Championship.

Early on, Barackus showed the electric crowd his awesome power and fearsome attack, as he hammered home clotheslines and bodyslams left and right. Though Hawkins’s raw talents had won him the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Rookie of the Year award in 2011, six years later he has shown that experience mixed with speed and talent is why he is still considered one of the most exciting young stars in the sport today.

During the match, Hawkins took a beating, but was able to keep his composure to stay alive, but it looked like the end was near when Barackus locked on the claw. With the force of a mac truck, Barackus lifted Hawkins up in the air and onto the mat with the clawhold slam for what looked to be the 1-2-3 from the referee Nick Ridenour and a roar of the SBAC fans.

Barackus went to celebrate his victory with the title that was handed to him.  However, referee Nick Ridenour had quickly let the fans, MMWA ring announcer Ben Simon and Barackus know that Hawkins had his feet on the ropes. As the referee went to return the MWR MO title back to Ben Simon, Hawkins went low with a kick to the groin that would end Barackus’s title reign mere seconds later.

Hawkins would not be done for the night as he would later use his new belt to level the former MWR Missouri Champion Brandon Espinosa with the strap, sending a message that he is not going to fear anyone in 2017.

Hawkins is a wanted man by both the monster Barackus and the former MWR Wrestler of the Year Brandon Espionsa. First though he will have to see if he can retain his title when he travels to Warsaw, Missouri to take on HRW Mayhem Champion Justin D’Air in a title vs. title match at High Risk Wrestling this Saturday night, February 18.

More details on the HRW Warsaw event and Ace Hawkins as they come in to MWR.

2016 MWR Wrestler of the Year – Mike Outlaw / Dez Wellston

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 16, 2017

1Mike Outlaw continued his rise to be one of the top young talents in the Midwest in 2016 by seeking out the toughest competition he could find. Starting the year off Outlaw challenged Brandon Espinosa in a hard core match before setting his sights to St. Louis Anarchy. Though Outlaw would struggle in the win department at SLA, he quickly earned the respect and love of their passionate fan base.

He would team up with Justin D’Air in a tag team classic at High Risk Wrestling against the Riegel Twins (Logan & Sterling) for the vacated Tag Team Championship. Due to the loss, the two friends quickly became enemies that were set for a brutal ending later in the year.

Outlaw, a former Dynamo Pro Wrestling Champion would set his sights on regaining the title against his archrival Jake Dirden. During this time he entered the WLW Jr. Championship tournament, losing to Jayden Fenix, who would go on to lose to Jon Webb in the finals.

In June, Outlaw would enter the High Risk Wrestling Mayhem tournament defeating Jake Dirden in the first round. In the triple threat finals, Outlaw won the championship over former PWI Rookie of the Year Ace Hawkins and Kiyoshi Shizuka.

In July, he challenged MWR Missouri Champion Brandon Espinosa at MMWA in a hard fought contest, just coming up short. Two weekends later, Outlaw earned the biggest win of his young career when he pinned Ring of Honor superstar Delirious. In August, Outlaw, would add his second Dynamo Pro Wrestling title to his resume by defeating Jake Dirden. A title he would hold until December when Brandon Aarons. Outlaw would end the year losing a thrilling last man standing match against D’air at High Risk Wrestling.

Outlaw would wrestle throughout the Midwest for Dynamo Pro, Saint Louis Anarchy, PWCS, MMWA, Proving Ground, WIA, New Breed Pro, Metro Pro, High Risk Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Resurgence . He would have killer matches with the likes of Davey Vega, Gary Jay and fellow young star Kevin Lee Davidson. His hard work would pay off as he now heads into 2017 as a full time NWL contracted superstar, now named Dez Wellston.

Lumberjacks, a Cage and FirePup in Swansea

Posted by flairwhoooooo on November 15, 2016

By Patrick Brandmeyer

Our ring announcer was Drew Abbenhaus; your referees were Denny Thomas, Jay King, and Nick Ridenour.

A local young lady sang the National Anthem to start the show…nicely done. Promoter Herb Simmons acknowledged the many sponsors and supporters of SICW as well as the Swansea Fire Department prior to the show’s opening matchup.

nbwoctnl-5

Moondog Rover vs. Waco(w/ Big Daddy): Moondog OVAH remains one of the most popular competitors in the area.
nbwoctnl-16

Big Daddy’s main charge Vic The Bruiser has been gaining momentum, picking up a recent win over Sean Vincent and being scheduled to face Gary Jackson at the next East Carondelet show.

nbwoctnl-24

nbwoctnl-20

This was your standard-issue Moondog match, but Waco got the cheap rollup pin with a handful of denim in 6:57.

nbwoctnl-36

Larry Matysik paid a visit to say a few words to the fans in attendance. I shook his hand as he was leaving…unfortunately, I’ve only had a handful of opportunities to converse with Larry. If I’d remembered the raffle for a steak dinner with Larry and Herb, I would have brought more cash than I did…

nbwoctnl-49

Big Jim Hoffarth vs. “The Suplex Cyclone” Curt Gannon: Gannon recently made his St. Louis-area debut with a time-limit draw against Superstar Steve Fender in East Carondelet; this was my first time seeing him in person. He was able to execute a couple of very impressive suplexes on the 300-plus-pounder, living up to his nickname.

nbwoctnl-62

nbwoctnl-63

At one point Hoffarth accidentally threw Gannon over the top rope and the referee didn’t call for a disqualification…whoops. At any rate, Hoffarth rallied but missed a big splash off the second rope…Gannon took advantage with a hold called the Arachnid Clutch(a trapped-arm headscissors on the mat).
nbwoctnl-74

Not sure if it was a tapout or unconscious “submission”, but that was the ballgame in 7:02…slight upset there.

nbwoctnl-82

nbwoctnl-94

Flaming Freddie Fury vs. Purple Passion: THE REMATCH TO END ALL REMATCHES~! Fury and Passion entered together, but Herb told them that they were facing each other.

They did do more actual wrestling this time around, as opposed to going full comedy as they did in their previous bout.

nbwoctnl-106
This match also had an actual finish, as Passion won with a Fameasser in 5:51.

“Dead Sexy” Daniel Gunner vs. “The” Ace Hawkins: Hawkins was particularly insistent about the ring announcement, especially the pronunciation of his nickname(“THEE”).

nbwoctnl-122

nbwoctnl-126

nbwoctnl-140

nbwoctnl-142

Gunner had a size and power advantage(as one heckling fan noted to Ace: “Why are you so tiny?”), but Ace used his speed and agility to gain an advantage. Gunner had a strong effort, but Ace rolled up him with feet on the ropes for the cheap win in 9:30.

nbwoctnl-149

nbwoctnl-152

nbwoctnl-173

“Your Canadian Hero” Sean Vincent vs. “Unstable” Dave Vaughn: These two have feuded for the past several months; Vaughn has been intent on turning Vincent into a “villain” again. The match was pretty good despite a few sloppy spots; Vincent just barely got Vaughn up and over for a backdrop in the early minutes of the match.
nbwoctnl-170

These two have worked together enough times that they’re familiar with each other(SCOUTING~!); Vincent picked up the victory after a Death Valley Driver in 11:01.

nbwoctnl-179

“Ironman” Ken Kasa vs. “Volatile” Curtis Wylde(w/ Wyldefyre), Lumberjack Match: The Swansea firefighters were the lumberjacks and made their entrance to “Proud To Be An American”. It took some time for them to get their cue…I had to make the wisecrack that, per Ben Simon, they were waiting for the beat to drop.
nbwoctnl-192

nbwoctnl-197

Wylde tried to walk away from the match, only to be blocked by the mascot Firepup and carried back to the ring by the firefighters. In terms of working for its intended purpose, I would consider this the best match of the night; Wyldefyre got another “Shiny Pants Has No Butt” chant, if I remember correctly.
nbwoctnl-200

nbwoctnl-225

nbwoctnl-234

nbwoctnl-228

nbwoctnl-239

Wyldefyre tried to interfere and a firefighter carried her away from ringside on his shoulders…hey, we just saw a fireman’s carry by an actual fireman! *ducks thrown objects* Firepup blinded Wylde with a fire extinguisher and Kasa capitalized with the John Wu Dropkick to win in 10:37…nicely done.

nbwoctnl-242

Classic Champion Ron Powers & “Night Train/Gorgeous/Great One” Gary Jackson vs. Attila Khan & Brandon Espinosa(w/ Travis Cook), best-of-three-falls cage match: This was a brawl from start to finish; Khan was left bloody, as has become tradition.

The match seemed rushed from my perspective, but the fans liked it and that’s what counted. Khan pinned Jackson after hitting him in the throat with his fork in 3:24. Jackson gave him a taste of his own medicine with a throat shot with the fork, pinning Khan to even the score in 5:10(total).
nbwoctnl-256

nbwoctnl-258

nbwoctnl-261

nbwoctnl-270

(Everyone’s favorite domestic terrorist Travis had the chutzpah to complain about Jackson’s use of the foreign object.) Espy scaled the cage to deliver a cross-bodyblock onto Powers & Jackson. (The cage wasn’t particularly tall compared to those in bigger promotions, but it was still a cool visual.) Travis threw a chair into the cage and decked the official on the arena floor, leading to Espinosa using it to clean house; however, he couldn’t score the deciding fall on either opponent. Khan picked up Jackson for a bodyslam, but fell over Powers in a schoolboy trip and Powers dropped an elbow on Khan for the final fall in 8:30(total); all right then. Powers defends against Espinosa at the East Carondelet show on the 19th…that should be a very interesting bout.

nbwoctnl-279

nbwoctnl-281

(EDIT 11/13: The TV show reminded me of more details from the bout; Travis actually entered the cage after striking referee Jay King in an attempt to interfere, then tried to get Espy out of the cage for the win only to find out that escaping the cage wasn’t an official way to win…heh.)

History Made: Brandon Espinosa Defends MWR MO Championship at SBAC

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 22, 2016

By Patrick Brandmeyer

The show started with a ten-bell salute for Muhammad Ali.

Brandon Aarons vs. “Infamous” Tyler Copeland for the MMWA Jr. Heavyweight Title:

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-2

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-3

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-4

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-5

These guys have been around the horn a few times and had a good solid opener; Aarons won with the close-range superkick in 9:47. Copeland complained that he wasn’t adequately prepared since the match was the opener(suuuuure) and wanted a rematch, even offering to put his hair on the line. Copeland doesn’t have a whole lot to sacrifice in that regard, but Aarons accepted the challenge and the match was set for July 9th. If that stipulation went both ways, the female fans would have heart attacks over the prospect of Aarons’ luxurious locks being in jeopardy…in all heterosexuality, the man has a tremendous head of hair.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-7

Tag Team Champion Brandon Espinosa vs. “The Millenial” Danny Adams for the Missouri Wrestling Revival Missouri Title: This was the first appearance of the MWR MO belt at South Broadway. Espy & Ace Hawkins’ Tag Title feud with The Family (Prince Moses & Damion Cortess) seems to be on the back burner as Moses is out of action with an injury. Espy referenced the fact that he and Adams both train with Michael Elgin, so he has a bit more respect for Adams than for a lot of the guys in the locker room.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-8

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-9

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-10

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-11

They had a really good matchup that got a lot of time; Adams is progressing nicely and has been getting his name on people’s radars in recent months. The cross-armbreaker is a tough hold to transition into professional wrestling as people are expected to fight through the pain of submission holds…however, this particular maneuver can legitimately break an arm if fully applied for enough time.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-12

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-13

In that regard, a wrestler/fighter is likely to surrender quickly rather than risk a major injury. (I say this as someone who is not well-versed in the mixed martial arts world, so bear with my relative ignorance.) Espinosa won with the aforementioned hold in 16:19(!), but not without a strong effort on Adams’ part…they shook hands afterwards, though Espy was still a bit dismissive of his opponent’s efforts.

Damion Cortess vs. Barackus: The big man turned on The Family in May to cost Moses & Cortess the Tag Titles to Espinosa & Ace Hawkins.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-16

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-17

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-18

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-19

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-20

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-21

This one didn’t even get started as the combatants brawled at ringside until Hawkins blindsided Cortess, leading to a two-on-one attack. With Moses on the disabled list, it seemed like no one was available to help Cortess…but he got assistance from a surprise source in the form of J-Mal Swagg. Commissioner Jim Harris ordered an impromptu tag match as a result…playa.

J-Mal Swagg & Damion Cortess vs. Tag Team Champion “The” Ace Hawkins & Barackus: Swagg has his own fanbase at South Broadway, so this change of attitude seemed like a natural progression. he rulebreaking duo took a walk for the countout in 11:49; by that, I mean Barackus walked out with Hawkins slung over his shoulder. Heh.

Moondog Rover vs. “The Incredible” Matt Kenway (Look At Him): When I don’t make it to an MMWA event, I watch the archived webcast. The commentary is provided by The Dirty Heinous Show and “Dirty” is the main guy on the mic…his insistent reference to THE INCREDIBLE MATT KENWAY LOOK AT HIM created my above designation. (To be fair, being the only pale white guy in the building with cornrows probably prompted a few awkward glances at the May show.) At this show, the commentary was primarily provided by Evan Gelistico and Mike Outlaw, creating the unusual setup of a St. Louis Anarchy guy and a Dynamo Pro guy (respectively) calling an MMWA show. Moondog OVAH~! tends to be the fan favorite by default…whoever he’s facing rarely gets cheered against him, so opponents just have to go with that flow.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-25

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-27

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-28

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-29

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-30
MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-31

The Incredible Matt Kenway Look At Him tried to take out the leg, but Moondog simply overpowered him and won with a World’s Strongest Slam in 5:33. After the match, Gelistico left the webcast position and entered the ring with a chair…Rover turned his attention to Evan, setting up The Incredible Matt Kenway Look At Him to deliver a low blow from behind. Gelistico beat down Moondog with a chair until Big Hoffarth hit the ring to run him off; Evan and The Incredible Matt Kenway Look At Him left together.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-32

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-33

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-34

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-35

“Da Bomb” Brian James vs. Big Jim Hoffarth for the T.V. Title: All things considered, Big Jim probably didn’t need to go back to the dressing room as he was in the next matchup; that left the door open for James to attack him from behind as he made his re-entrance. Jimmy D came out to ringside but didn’t actively get involved; his presence was probably a distraction to the challenger as they’ve had issues in recent months. James won with the sitout gourdbuster (not an easy task given Hoffarth’s size) in 6:56; Jimmy D made fun of Hoffarth’s losing effort afterwards, but D had his own matters to attend to.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-36

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-37

Shaft vs. “The Enforcer” Jimmy D, loser-wears-a-dress match: The stipulation said that the loser would be forced to wear a dress for all of his subsequent wrestling appearances in the MMWA. Shaft has been a consistent presence at local wrestling shows but hasn’t competed regularly in several years. Jim Hoffarth took a seat at ringside, looking for some payback for Jimmy D’s earlier actions.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-38

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-39

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-40

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-41

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-42

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-43

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-44

Jimmy D appeared to be the more ring-ready of the two, but Hoffarth’s distraction allowed Shaft to get the rollup pin in 7:14. Unfortunately Jim Harris didn’t have a full-fledged dress for D to wear, instead opting for a black skirt that didn’t look all that notable against D’s dark-colored attire. Harris promised that D would have a brighter-colored ensemble when he faces Hoffarth in July.

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-45

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-46

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-47

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-48

MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-49

“Night Train/Great One/Gorgeous” Gary Jackson vs. “2.0” Da’Marius Jones(w/ B.T.) vs. A.J. Williams: B.T. is the former Jackson Whitechapel/Clownman Jacko and he brought a stop sign to the ring. Since this match format is no-DQ anyway, B.T. blatantly whacked Jackson with the sign in the early going, prompting a fight at ringside between the champion and Jones’ security man. Since Jones and Williams are tag team partners, the main question was whether a split would occur over who would get the title-winning victory. We got an answer, but probably not the one we wanted…Williams locked Jackson in a Sharpshooter while Jones hooked a Crippler Crossface at the same time. Jackson tapped out in a surprisingly short 6:40…but who was the champion?
MMWAJUNE201 LIGHTROOM-50

MMWA went through a similar situation last year when then-champion Williams fought Jones to a double-fall draw, leading to a title vacancy…and we got the same result here as Harris declared the title to be held up. The championship would be decided in July in a four-corner match involving Jackson, Williams, Jones, and another former champion: Kevin Lee Davidson.
