WLW Recap from Slater Missouri 4-18-2009 Fender vs. Anthony vs. Murdoch

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 22, 2009

By Brian “Flair” Kelley

World League Wrestling came to Slater Mo with a brand new WLW champion (Superstar Steve Fender), a former WWE Tag Team Champion (Trevor Murdoch), and a legend in Harley Race.  With the stars shining bright on April 18th there was one man looking to cast his shadow on the whole evening. That man was former WLW Champion “King of the 450” Steve Anthony.

Our good friend Dan Gier was missing in action so the Slater crowd was treated with the announcing duties of former Gold Exchange manager Johnny Gold. Gold opened the night off with inviting his friend who had just lost the WLW title thanks in part because of the Rowdy one Roddy Piper in Eldon Missouri on March 21st.  Anthony was quick to direct his comments to the former World Champion Harley Race. Anthony stated that “I am a gift to this company and I have a gifted body, the one with the gifted wrestling talent. There was one gift that was stolen from me and that was the coveted WLW title. Since it has been stolen from me I have had to go through men, week after week I keep coming out her and taking on an opponent but it’s not a title rematch against Fender. Harley. I know your hiding that paper champion Steve Fender, but tonight I am demanding a title shot and I am demanding that you come out here to tell the people that you are going to give me what I want.”

Anthony is one of the top talkers in the Midwest and would not stop so Race made his way to the ring to tell him” Steve you are already in a match tonight” Anthony’s reply was “It’s not a title match Harley”. Harley laid down the law and let him know that if he could win the first match then he would add him in the main event to make it a three way with Fender and Murdoch for a three way.  Anthony, not happy about it but very confident in his abilities let Race and the crowd know that he was going home the WLW Champion.

The first match of the evening was Brian Breaker taking on one half of the WLW tag team Champions Darin Waid. Waid with the speed did his best to keep away from Breakers raw power. Breaker at one point tried to catch a break outside but when Waid came close enough, Breaker pulled him outside the ring to punish him with a powerful shoulder block into the ring. Breaker kept the assault and looked to have the match well in hand. Waid never quit and the frustrating was setting in on the young stud.Breaker argued with the ref enough to allow Waid to hit a huge flying clothesline off the top rope.  Back and forth these young warriors went but 15 minutes just wasn’t enough and the match ended in a 15 minutes time limit draw.

Next up we had the “Vietnam Phenom” Bao Nguyen taking on the other half of the WLW Tag Team Champions Dustin Lane. Lane would be tested as Ngyuen was not in a good mood this evening and looked to do what it took to get the win. Both Lane and Nguyen have speed and can wrestle, so as I watched to see who would make the first mistake Lane was crisp early and really had Nguyens number and 7 minutes in was in complete control hitting a monkey flip in the corner and a flying body press along the way. Lane went to the well once to many and Nguyen capitalize by moving out of the way as Lane hit the floor head on. Nguyen hit a perfect kick to the head that landed Lane stretched on the second rope which prompted a fan to tell him that “You don’t have nothing”. Nguyen must had felt the need to show off because he smiled at the fan and teased a Rey Mysterio JR 619 only to stop when he got to the ropes and walk under it to kick Lane in the head instead. This prompted boos but Ngyuen looked very pleased with himself. That arrogance led to a mistake when Nguyen missed a flying punch that Lane went under, when Nguyen came back he was tripped into the corner head first. Lane looked to have momentum going his way but when he went for a backslide for a win Nguyen quickly reversed it for the surprising victory.

Anthony needed this next match but Jason Jones is young and determined and Anthony’s chance to get in the main event would have to go through him. Jones did not disappoint and was able to take it to the former WLW Champion showing signs of stardom at moments, but Anthony is on top of his game at this stage and would not be denied the rematch that he felt he deserved when he pinned Jones for the 1—2-3

Johnny Gold then announced that due to Stacey O’Brien suffered a serious shoulder injury last week in the WLW match between Amy Hennig she would not be able to wrestle that evening but Hennig wanted to come to the ring to thank the crowd for coming to show. Hennig let the fans knowfrom the bottom of her heart she appreciated them and wished that there was some competition in the area.  Hennig then noticed a mysterious beautiful brunette walking to the ring which prompted her to ask “Paris (Hilton) check your children I think one of them got loose and is coming to the ring.”

The Latino princess firmly let Henning know that it’s a shame she don’t have her license tonight but by the time the next WLW has a show she challenges her for her title.  Then she went personal by letter her know and I quote “Sweetheart, it is about time that someone told you that you are not your daddy.  That got the blood boiling and Hennig went for a clothesline but the princess was ready  as she ducked, then she hit one of her own before bailing out of the ring to fight another day.

The first WLW title of the night was on the line as the MWR Tag Team of the Month for March, Dustin Lane and Darin Waid took on Brian Breaker and Bao Nguyen. Breaker teased that he would start off against Waid but quickly tagged in Nguyen. Waid took control early and hit Nguyen with a shoulder block that sent Nguyen scrambling to the outside. Breaker and Nguyen looked to get in the heads of the young champs by stalling but this young team has grown rapidly in the past few months and remained calm. Breakers power gave his team an advantage but the inexperience showed when he went to tag in Nguyen, he did not take the time to  drag his opponent to the corner which allowed Lane to get back on the offensive.

Double teams have been the method of which Lane and Waid have been able to remain the WLW Tag Team Champions and they was able to offset the power of Breaker by hitting him with a double clothesline and keeping him in there corner. While watching this match I came to the realization that Darin Waid may be one of the most underrated wrestlers in the Midwest. He was able to hit Breaker and Nguyen from everywhere and with an arsenal of moves.

Breaker used some underhand tactics to get the advantage for his team when he pulled the legs from underneath him while the ref Mark Smith wasn’t looking. Nguyen quickly took advantage with a kick, and then he tagged in Breaker who was relentless in his attack. Breaker and Nguyen tagged in and out while dismantling there opponents. Breaker hit Waid with a clothesline that was so powerful in the corner it threw Waid full body across the ropes. As Waid was stuck there Breaker picked him up and tossed him like a rag doll in the center of the ring.

It looked as if we had brand new tag team champions but Waid hit a sweet drop kick on Breaker to allow him to get the tag and change the momentum. As the action broke down all four men were in the ring as the ref  Smith  did his best to regain control. In the chaos Waid threw Breaker out of the ring, and then went to the top to hit Nguyen with a flying diamond Cutter for the big win.

Match Results: Darin Waid & Dustin Lane defeated Brian Breaker and Bao Nguyen to retain the WLW Tag Team Titles.

An exciting tag team match brought us to the Main event. The World League Wrestling Champion Steve Fender defending his title in a three way with Trevor Murdoch which Johnny Gold announced “was the biggest red neck in wrestling” which brought huge cheers to the Slater crowd and the man who demanded a title shot Steve Anthony.

Fender and Murdoch who have had there shares of battles through the 10 great years have been around quickly took an understanding that they should go at Anthony. Anthony was overwhelmed and retreated out of the ring. As Fender urged Anthony to returned Murdoch struck from behind.

The battle was on between 3 former WLW Champions to see who would leave with the coveted Championship. Murdoch threw Anthony in the corner, and then he threw Fender and ran full steam ahead on top of both of them. The action was fast and furious with bodies flying everywhere. To say it was hard to keep up with all the action was an understatement. The key moment of the match came when Johnny Gold made his presence known by tripping Fender from the outside of the ring giving Anthony the win after . Harley rang the bell to let the fans know that it wasn’t going to happen like that and the tow arch enemies Gold and Race were eye to eye once again. Race hit with a left hook that sent Gold to the ground, Race picked him up and tossed him into the ring with a fired up Murdoch and Fender while Anthony snuck out of the ring leaving Gold behind Fender connected on a superkick while Murdoch kicked him out of the ring.

Murdoch wanted Fender to know that the WLW title was always special to him because it was Harley Races Champion. Tonight he (Murdoch) did not win the belt but wanted to congratulate him on being the Champion. On that moment two of the most important WLW Champions in their 10 years history shook hands out of respect.

I was able to catch up with Trevor Murdoch after the match and he had this to say about coming so close to winning the WLW Championship.

The pro wrestling season typically heats up in the Spring and into early Summer.  May is a time to look at what has happened thus far in the year, and make educated predictions as to what is yet to come.  On that note, the April 2009 Awards should serve as a measuring stick when playing fortune teller.  Here are the winners, as voted by the MWR Awards Committee:

The quality of the AAPW show in Nashville on April 25th was possibly their best since last year. Our first time in this town, they had a paid attendance of 155. Not too shabby. The crowd was HOT. Yes, it was a bit warm in the Community Center, but not that kind of hot. The card was solid top to bottom. The crowd was so happy that The Nashville Moose Lodge, who raised $1,000 from the event, asked AAPW to set aside 4 more dates for fall and winter of 2009/2010!

(On a personal note, although we appreciate the gesture from the MWR Awards committee, both Josh and I abstained from voting in this category out of respect to the rest of the hard working men and women in the Midwest pro wrestling scene. WLW recap March 20th – “Rowdy” Roddy Piper meets Steve Anthony

Posted by flairwhoooooo on April 15, 2009

By Brian “Flair” Kelley

World league Wrestling has spoiled fans in Sedalia Missouri this past year. Last September WLW treated them with a special appearance by former WWE Wrestle Mania Star Bobby Lashley. (for a recap of the show click here)

Less than a year later on March 20th WLW returned with one of the most influential wrestlers in the history of the Sport, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Piper was instrumental in the wrestling boom of the 1980’s when his feud with Hulk Hogan fueled interest in the sport worldwide. Roddy Piper and Harley Race in the same building, talk about a treat and luckily for me it was only 2 hours away.

I had purchased front row tickets for my cousin Paul and a young kid named Josh that he wanted to spend time with prior to the show. Paul had only been to one show before, which happened to be a WWE show. I had promised him that there was nothing like sitting front row for an indie show and knew that WLW could deliver on that promise.

I was only able to get to the show 15 minutes prior to bell time due to the fact that I was unable to get off work. The bad day was all erased when I walked in the building that was full of people waiting for some hard hitting wrestling action. WLW announced that they were going to start the night off with Roddy Piper signing autographs. It seemed as if everybody in the building had something for the “Hot Rod” to sign. I went to set up for MWR while my cousin and his friend got in line to meet Piper.

The night started off perfect when Dan Gier thanked everyone for coming and he even was kind enough to mention to the crowd that MWR was there covering the event and to please check out the website.

“Superstar” Steve Fender started the show off to take on one half of the WLW tag team Champions Dustin Lane. Lane surprised me when he was able to take it to Fender early in the match. When it looked as if Fender would get the upper hand Lane stopped any momentum that the “Superstar” would have. Lane was surprisingly one step ahead of him going into the five minute mark.

Lane executed a perfect “Stinger splash” or in this case a Lane splash in the corner and went for what looked to be an easy win. Fender kicked out and struggled to get to the corner to catch his breath and asking for a time out! Lane’s inexperience showed because when he went towards Fender, Fender struck and threw him head first into the turnbuckle.

The change of momentum had happen and Lane felt big chops and kicks methodically coming from all directions. The crowd was not happy at all with Fender and the way he was punishing the young champion. Fender continued to work Lane over left and right. One moment it would be a knee to the back the next it would be a kick to the stomach. Lane countered with an atomic drop in the corner ring post, followed up with a clothesline that had Fender reeling. Lane really looked to have the chance to take down the talented Fender but in a blink of an eye, Lane made one mistake going for a roll up, allowing Fender to put smother Lane for the 1-2-3.

The “Vietnam Phenom” Bao Nguyen recently brought excitement in the Midwest for his impressive showing at WWE’S ECW. Nguyen was the next to enter the WLW ring much to the delight of the WLW faithful. Nguyen’s opponent was the most recent graduate of the WLW academy Jason Jones. I am always excited to see a new wrestler and one that has graduated from the WLW School.

Jones quickly established that he was not the fans friend and they responded in kind. You suck chants for Jones rang through the building and Nguyen used his speed and drilled Jones with a perfect dropkick. Nguyen went to the top and attempted to hit a high risk move on Jones, but Jones was wise enough to move out of the way and strike with a devastating clothesline.

Two of the young guns went at it back and forth, with Jones exhibiting an impressive power and skill level that will pay huge dividends to his career. Jones attempted to slow down Nguyen with power moves but Nguyen has showed in his time at WLW he should never be counted out. Nguyen hit a savate kick to Jones head.

Nguyen went for the pin but Jones got the save by touching the ropes. Nguyen showed shades of Rey Mysterio JR when he hit a 619 then he springboard off the ropes and delivered another great kick to Jones head. With the crowd in an uproar the ref hit the mat for the third time and Nguyen was proud to have his hand raised in a hard fought battle.

I imagine that I am showing my age with this next statement but I was excited when Amy Hennig entered the ring with David Lee Roth’s awesome “Yankee Rose” song to take on WLW Champion Stacey O’Brien. O’Brien and Hennig have feuded for almost a year now with the Irish bad girl always being one step ahead. Hennig has shown more confidence in her ability the past few times she has battled O’Brien and on this night she was the aggressor. The MWR Female of the Year O’Brien retreated to the outside and Hennig held her ground and waited for O’Brien to return to the ring. O’Brien returned to the ring and continued her dominance until a kick to the midsection to the air out of Hennig.

O’Brien slowed down Hennig’s exuberance by leaning and pounding on her much to the crowd disdain. O’Brien made one of her few mistakes when she traded punches with the more powerful Hennig. Hennig followed it up with a body slam. Hennig went to the top and hit a snap mare then went for the pin. The foot on the ropes saved the Champion for the time being. O’Brien was hurt and Hennig was ruthless in her attack, but Hennig went to the well one too many times when she went to the top to deliver a dropkick. O’Brien moved out of the way as Hennig hit the mat head first. O’Brien quickly sensed that Hennig was hurt and went for the pinfall that would get her a win in what maybe O’Brien’s toughest match between the third generation superstar.

The Tag team Championship was on the line in the next contest as the defending Champions Darin Waid and Dustin Lane took on Brian Breaker and his tag team partner “Superstar” Steve Fender. Breaker and Lane started the match off, with Lane showing that he could utilize his speed to offset the power of Breaker at least for the start of the contest. Lane tagged in his partner Waid and in return Breaker tagged in Fender. Waid and Lane was a chess match as the two exchanged moves

Lane and Waid really seem to mesh well with one another and seemed to give the tag team of Fender and Breaker fits. When Breaker returned to the ring he was able to power Lane in the corner, when the ref tried to break them up Breaker struck and hit a kick to get the edge for only as second as Lane used his speed to get the upper hand once again. The Champions quickly tagged in and out while beating down Breaker while keeping him on their side of the ring.

When Waid threw Breaker in the corner and went full force to deliver a move Breaker put up a foot and changed the direction of the match. Breaker wisely tagged in a very fresh Fender. Fender and Breaker were now the tag team who took advantage of the quick tags and double teams. The Champions used their speed once again to get out of trouble and get on the offensive. Breaker bailed out of the ring as Lane was lighting him up. Lane showed his inexperience when he went after Breaker around the ring. Breaker had entered the ring with Lane right behind him and that’s when Fender took the cheap shot to get the advantage.

Dan Gier stated that 15 minutes had expired and it looked like we may have new WLW Tag team champions with Lane taking a thrashing from the challengers. The crowd did their best to cheer on the young Champions. Lane needed the tag to Waid. Fender was taking the life out of Lane with an abdominal stretch in Fenders side of the ring. Lane was able to fight out of that only to have Fender beat him to the ground. At one time Lane desperately jumped for a tag to his partner only to have Fender catch him and pound him into the mat.

Then the opening the Champions needed happen, Fender and Lane hit head first but could Lane get up and complete the tag before Fender could stop him or make the tag himself? Lane got the tag to Waid and Fender to Breaker. Waid was on fire and hit a flying leg drop from the rafters and would have got the victory if Fender had not interfered. Fender and Breaker pulled out all the tricks but Waid was one step ahead of them still.

Waid threw Breaker to the ropes but Breaker reversed and hit a clothesline that sent Waid flying in the air into a 360 onto the mat. Breaker must have felt confident or my guess dazed at that moment because he went to the top but took too much time. Waid was able to hit Breaker and then struck quickly with a top rope diamond cutter for the victory as Lane kept Fender from making the save.

Rowdy Piper was introduced to the WLW crowd after taking the time from autographing the Polaroid’s. Piper said the crowd was beautiful, and one in the crowd chanted for Piper to take down Chris Jericho. Piper then asked if they wanted him to take out Jericho or Vince McMahon at Wrestle mania. He then wanted to thank Harley Race and wanted the fans to know that he loved them with all his heart.

The main event was for the WLW Championship as the Champion “The King of the 450” Steve Anthony defending his title vs. the powerful Marc Godeker with a twist. The special referee was none other than Former WWE and WLW alumni Trevor Murdoch.

Trevor Murdoch tries to contain WLW Champion Steve Anthony and Marc Godeker in the corner. (Photo Credit Paul Alberson)

These two wrestlers have very little weakness in their repertoire. Anthony has the ego and skills to keep him at the top of the WLW but even he had to be worried when Godeker held him up for close to 10 seconds in a standing suplex before smashing him into the mat.

Marc Godeker sends a message to Anthony of the power he possesses. (Photo Credit Paul Alberson)

Anthony struck back when he went low to the challenger’s knees; with that one move Anthony had the offense along with the fans disdain. One may not like the champion’s attitude but you can not dismiss his talent and the skills he possess. Anthony though seemed to not like the way the special ref Murdock would reprimand him and the two came face to face several times as Anthony used questionable tactics.

At the ten minute mark Anthony attempted a Frankenstein and Godeker caught him and flung him into the corner post like a rag doll. Anthony was able to fight back but Godeker’s power was phenomenal and kept Anthony from ever really dominating as he has shown he can with others in the past.

Godeker dragged Anthony to the corner and went for a 2nd rope splash but Anthony put his feet up then went to the top to hit the 450 to retain the title.

You could tell that Murdoch did not want to raise the hand but did the right thing and walked away. Anthony could not resist to let the crowd know how he felt” I am going home as your world champion and I saw the Hot Rod (Roddy Piper) come out all night and try to get a pop at the house that I built. You came here to see me( The crowd was louder and louder and louder and when Piper came through the curtain) Anthony stated that he use to respect him (Piper) but he is now a changed man and only cares what the fans think. Anthony kept it up as Piper came to the ring, “ Piper I saw you were in the back telling the young guy (Wrestler) you put your hand around them and said let me give you some advice kid, well guess what Piper we don’t need your advice. I normally give out my bibs to the girls that drool for me but I have one for you.

He would not quit taunting the “Hot Rod” Piper never one to back down a fight was taking off his jacket ready for a rumble. Anthony then demanded that Piper watch as Murdoch raised the hand of the Champion. Murdoch did so and when he attempted to leave the ring Anthony made the mistake to try to pull him back only to catch a punch straight to the face. Piper then jumped in the ring to have fun at the Champions expense. The two of them kicked Anthony out of the ring to finish off a great night of wrestling.

I asked my cousin and his friend what they thought of watching live WLW wrestling from the front row. Paul said that he would had a lot of fun and was thinking about going to see WLW live when they return to Slater Missouri on April 18th with special guest Trevor Murdoch. I had no doubt that he would like it.

Meet the new Kingpin of WLW Steve Anthony-WLW Recap 1-30-2009.

Friday was here and I was more than ready to make my way to Richmond Missouri, to see World League Wrestling in action. They had invited us to meet with fellow wrestling fans to invite them to come too our site and sign up for a chance to win a free MWR T-shirt during their first show of 2009.

The doors opened up and the place filled up very quickly with wrestling fans, meanwhile my girlfriend went around to meet the fans and to encourage them to come to our booth and sign up. The legend himself Harley Race was at the table with autographs for the fans along with a handshake, Dan Gier announced on the PA that very shortly we would see some exciting action soon and not to forget to sign up at our booth. Former WWE Star Eugene was sitting near WLW rising star Amy Hennig, with kids and adults a like coming up to meet them. While looking at the there of them I felt as I was part of wrestling history as before me were the Past (Harley Race) the present (Eugene) and the future of Pro Wrestling ( Amy Hennig).

The show started off with two of the rising stars of the WLW, Dustin Lane and Brian Breaker. Breaker came to the ring as one half of the WLW Tag Team Champions along with Dinn T Moore. The last time I saw Breaker, I saw potential but it was obvious that he was just starting and seemed to have had a long ways to go. I had the privilege of seeing Dustin Lane in his first match at WLW against The Vietnam Phenom” Bao Nguyen and was really impressed with his athleticism and skill.

Dustin Lane and Brian Breaker start the action.

Breaker proved early in the match that his time at the Harley Race Academy and tag teaming with Dinn T Moore had paid off. Lane and Breaker went back and forth with Lane targeting Breakers left arm and Breaker countered with his power to get out of trouble when needed. Before I knew it the 15 minute time limit had expired

Brian Breaker used his power to his advantage.

Brian Breaker used his power to his advantage.

The next match was between the “Young One” Darin Waid taking on Breaker’s tag team partner the ever dangerous Dinn T Moore. The crowd at Richmond despises Dinn T Moore and showered him with chants that were not flattering. Waid started the match off using his speed to keep the Champion at bay. Dinn T took the control of the match just for a few minutes but the crowd really seemed to light the fire in Waid as there were no stopping the man.

Dinn T Moore uses mind games to start the match.

Dinn T Moore uses mind games to start the match.

Moore hit a devastating clothesline that would have stopped any other man. Moore went for a forearm shot in the corner but Waid tossed him nearly out of the ring. Moore returned the favor with a powerful right, followed up with a body block. Dinn T made the mistake of going to the top, which Waid used his speed to capitalize on using the ropes to catapult himself to hit Moore with a flying kick. Waid looked to have Moore’s number but with a quick strike into a slam, Moore went and got the 1,2,3.

Next up was a short intermission that led to the WLW Women’s Champion Stacey O’Brien defending her title against arch enemy Amy Hennig. Amy defeated Stacey briefly for the title this past fall but Stacey regained the belt on the way to becoming the first ever MWR Female Wrestler of the Year. Prior to the match Chants of Amy Hennig rang through the building.

The match started with Stacey delivering a slap to the challenger’s face which infuriated Hennig and she chased Stacey around the ring which allowed the Champion to get the upper hand for just a moment. Amy took an early advantage and worked O’Brien’s leg to perfection and had her crawling to the ropes for the break. Hennig’s name was being chanted even louder than before when the Champion was able to kick Hennig into the ropes head first. With a moment of hope, O’Brien attacked with an arsenal of moves, forearms, kicks and body slams were delivered with force. Hennig showed that she would not give up and took all the champion could give and came back to deliver some offense of her own. Then it happen, O’Brien claimed that she had a leg injury and begged the ref for a break but Hennig would have none of it saying that she had seen this one too many times and proceeded to attack, when O’Brien struck with a roll up and retain the title much to the dismay of Hennig and her fans.

What I noticed early was how much more confident Hennig was in the ring and it was obvious that O’Brien was taking the rising star more serious in this encounter. This rivalry is far from over and may be one of the most exciting feuds of the year in the Midwest in 2009.

I was excited when it was announced that the tag team Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker would be defending their tag team titles against Waid and Lane. I had caught up with the menacing due to get their thoughts of 2009 and the tag team division and they had this to say.

I must admit after seeing how much Breaker had improved his wrestling along with more power to his arsenal, I was on the Moore and Breaker bandwagon.. Add on the fact that his tag team partner was none other than one of the most complete wrestlers in the Midwest Dinn T Moore, I was pumped up to see this tag team. A tag team I felt could lead the way in 2009.

The Richmond faithful chanted NEW CHAMPS when Waid and Lane entered the ring and all I could think was fat Chance! You can not say that Richmond is not a sharing bunch because they gave the Moore and Breaker a chant of their own “OLD CHAMPS”.

Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker lets the fans know who they champs are!

Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker lets the fans know who they champs are!

Before the start of the bell, the Champions ambushed their opponents. When the ref was able to force Moore back to his corner Breaker wisely powered Lane to his partner’s corner. Lane was able to withstand the early attack and make a tag for his team which allowed them to go on the offense for the first time. The Champions may have had the power but the challengers had the speed and utilized it to their advantage. This showed when Breaker bounced off the ropes and was treated to a swift dropkick. When it was time to win tag they too showed they could double team and took turns with chops in the corner.

Darin Waid shows one of his arsenal of moves.

Darin Waid shows one of the many moves in his arsenal.

With one mistake from Lane, Moore was showed his skills when he delivered a shoulder block that took the young wrestler off his feet. I thought at this moment that the titles were safe and the crowd must have sensed it to because they clapped and yelled for Lane to make the tag. Dan Gier stated that 10 minutes had expired and even with the crowed on his side, Moore and Breaker controlled the match with pure dominance…. Or so it would seem Lane was able to hit Moore with a neckbreaker which stunned him long enough to allow Lane to get the fresh Waid the tag. Waid and the crowd was on fire and the with the four men going at it at once. Moore looked to have things going their way and had slammed Lane in the middle of the ring. Moore then went to the top rope only to have Waid strike and hit him with a flying stunner off the top rope. The crowd went nuts and we did indeed have NEW CHAMPS.

During intermission Harley entered the ring to show respect by having two presentations, one was 300 to the Eagalton center to promote activities to the organization. A special donation was given to the Franklin family $500 to the cystic fibrosis foundation. Proving once again that Wrestling and the communities they come to have a close knit bond that each other share.

The main event was upon us and we would crown a new WLW Champion. Eugene had entered already entered the ring when Steve “King of the 450” Anthony came to the ring and asked Eugene for a “small favor” which was for Eugene to stay out of this match because this was Anthony’s destiny to be the Champion.

Steve Anthony ask Eugene for a favor as a friend.

Steve Anthony ask Eugene for a favor as a "friend".

Eugene was confused on what to do, stay and wrestle like the fans wanted him to or go to the back and call it a night as Anthony had wanted from his friend. Anthony got tired of waiting and attcked and that’s when Superstar Steve Fender made the save.

Anthony was feeling the pressure from Fender as Eugene was still hurt on the outside of the ring. When Anthony pleaded for a break Fender hesitated which left an opening for Anthony to kick Fender in the stomach. Anthony’s good fortune did not last long because Eugene got back in the ring to get a few laughs as Anthony’s expense, at one time riding him like a horse and patting his butt.

Eugene always takes time to ask the fans what they want.

Eugene always takes time to ask the fans what they want.

Eugene and Fender showed each other mutual respect by shaking hands before they went after each other. When Anthony did come back to the ring Fender and Eugene was ready with a double team. The problem arose when Fender went for the pin; Eugene was smart enough to make the save. Fender returned the favor when he Superkicked Eugene and then had to make the save before Anthony was able to pin the former WWE star.

Superstar Steve makes the save.

Superstar Steve makes the save.

Fender went to the top to hit Anthony with a flying head butt while Eugene was down but missed. Eugene was taking some hits from the cocky youngster when he suddenly “Hulked up”. Anthony persevered and at one point accidentally threw Eugene onto ref, which prompted the other ref to come into the ring to try to count the pin. Fender by this time had caught his second wind and hit Anthony with fierce punches and a beautiful bridge suplex. By that time a third ref, Johnny Gold had entered the ring to count the pinfall. When it looked as if Eugene was to make the pin on Anthony, Gold hit the mat a second time but when it was time for him to count to three, something was in his eye???

Eugene’s attention was distracted just for a split second, which allowed Anthony to kick Eugene into the corner and the force propelled him back to Anthony who rolled him up while Johnny Gold suddenly could count to three and did so in two seconds. That evil Johnny Gold!!!

World League Champion Steve Anthony

World League Champion Steve Anthony

2009 started off with a bang, Steve Anthony was the new World League Wrestling Champion, Dustin Lane and Darin Waid had done what I thought was impossible and defeated Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker for the WLW Tag Team Championship. Brian Breaker has convinced me that he is one of the top rising stars not only in WLW but in the Midwest. I have no doubts that Amy Henning is a superstar in the making and treasure the opportunity to see her up close and personal before she makes it to the top of the world.

WLW is filled with a great group of young talent in the locker room and 2009 looks to be a breakout year. Join WLW in a town near you. For more information please go to the WLW please take time to check out their website at WLW-WEBSITE.

Your Trip to Space Mountain- Bobby Lashley and WLW

Posted by Admin on September 11, 2008

Your Trip to Space Mountain

By Brian “Flair” Kelley
flairwhoooooo@yahoo.com

I woke up on Saturday morning and almost decided to not attend the WLW event that evening as I would be checking them out the next weekend in Moberly. I was also concerned that I would not be able to get tickets as it may be a “sell out”, But as the morning came to a close, I couldn’t resist. My girlfriend and I left for Sedalia, Mo for W.K. Chevrolet where former WWE Superstar Bobby Lashley was to sign autographs.

While waiting in line the Noon Day Optimist Club announced that they had tickets for sale, I picked up second row tickets and was all set for the evening. Before I knew it some kids in the line were excited and yelling “He is here, Bobby Lashley is here… and he is huge!”

When I first caught sight of Bobby, the child was right, he was huge, he was all smiles and, with kids jumping up and down around him, he gave them high fives and exclaimed he was glad that they were there. He headed to the table to sign Autographs and take pictures. We took our pictures and said hello to one of my heroes, Harley Race, and headed off to supper prior to the show.

The show started off with Akiyago taking on Brian Breaker in the opening contest. Akiyago is despised by the fans and he used mind games to keep Breaker from using his power to his advantage and was able to get the win. But before he left, he couldn’t resist the urge to antagonize the fans, who were not happy that he had won.

Akiyago has Brian Breaker on the ropes.

Up next was fan favorite “The Vietnam Phenom” Bao Nguyen taking on the newcomer Dustin Lane in his wrestling debut. The match started off in a slow pace and before I know it the two wrestlers where hitting each other with exciting moves as the action went back and forth which led me to believe that this was not Lane’s first match. I was later told that in fact, this was his debut in wrestling so I witnessed history as Lane was able to get the win when he rolled up Bao with a small package. Though Lane was able to get his first victory, I am sure that Bao Nguyen will look to even the score in their next encounter. I hope to see the rematch to see these young guns go at it.

Dustin Lane lets Bao know he is a quick learner.

WLW at this point had an intermission and Bobby Lashley came out and took pictures inside the ring and once again he was all smiles. I enjoyed watching him interact with the fans young and old. He picked up one young child with one hand and teased that he would throw him out the ring over the top rope only to bring him back in the ring and all the while the child was smiling from ear to ear. You know that kid will be telling the story to all his friends at school on Monday morning. He played with one female fan by getting on one knee and she could not believe her eyes as her face turned red. She too would have a story to tell. To say the intermission was worth watching would be an understatement.

Prior to the match Stacey O’Brien even gives the ref Martin T a hard time.

Up next was what I like to dub the future of women’s pro wrestling: Amy Hennig taking on WLW Womens Champion Stacy O’Brien . I was fortunate to say that I was able to see Amy in her wrestling debut in Eldon and her first opponent was this same Irish troublemaker. The first match up Stacy really used Amy’s inexperience against her and at times made her look foolish in her attempt to break into the WLW Womens Title hunt.

Amy Hennig proves to Stacey O’ Brien that she may be a rookie but she will not be pushed around.

You could tell Amy had worked hard and learned from her mistakes in her first encounter and was giving Stacey fits throughout the match. Though Amy had improved immensely since the first time they met, Stacy was always one step ahead of the one who she sarcastically calls “Little Miss Perfect”. Stacey seized the opportunity with the ref out of position; she put her feet on the ropes to get the pin on Amy. As Stacy would say ” That is soooo Stacey O”.

There is no doubt that Amy is WWE bound but I would be shocked if Stacy wasn’t there to greet her. Amy will get another shot for the WLW Women’s champion this weekend as she will face off once again in Moberly,MO on September 13, 2008. It is a match that I highly recommend you come and check out.

The next match up would feature two of the most charismatic wrestlers on the WLW roster Dinn T Moore and Michael Strider. Dinn T Moore has floundered in the WLW since his departure with Brandon Tatum and that may have attributed to him just barely missing the Missouri Wrestling Revival Top 100. Make no mistake about it, there are few in the Midwest that can get under the fans’ and wrestlers’ skin like the former WLW Tag Team Champion. He has the talent to win any match he is a part of.

On the other side of the ring you had one of the hardest hitting wrestlers in the Midwest. Strider has taken on some of the best in the business and really can work a crowd to his advantage. This would be a very interesting match as both men look to move up the ladder to the WLW Heavyweight Title currently held by “Dangerous” Derek McQuinn.

Dinn T Moore shows that the heavyweights in the Midwest can fly as well, as he goes up top to hit Michael Strider with a big move.

At first, Strider got the upper hand on Moore to start the match and as Moore regrouped outside the ring the fans chanted “chicken”. Strider urged him to return to the ring for a beating and when Moore returned, he withstood some more punishment from Strider. With one mistake from Strider, though, Dinn T put the heat on Strider – knocking him down with one big move after another. Strider continued to get up and each man did not give an inch. The fans were cheering on Strider for the bad guys have won all the matches in these evening to the fans dismay and Strider was there last chance to celebrate, Dinn T Moore though had other plans and was able to get the win this evening with a roll up along with the tights pulled ,as he left the ring, Dinn T bragged to the fans know that he is among the WLW elite. The fans last hope for happiness would be Bobby Lashley.

In the end what promised to be a hard hitting match lived up to the expectations, with another future battle between these two foes a must see.

The Main event would be none other that a 3 way match with Bobby Lashley, NOAH’S Go Shiozaki and one half of the current WLW Tag Team Champions Marc Godeker.

The wild card in this match would be Godeker, Godeker and his tag team partner Steve Anthony have the skills that is reminiscent of a great tag team that went by the name of “The Steiner Brothers” in their prime, but unfortunately Steve Anthony has been healing from an injury due to a match earlier this year so Marc has had to go out solo for the time being. How would Marc be able to respond to working with two of the best in the business? We were about to find out.

Bobby Lashley enters the WLW ring for the very first time.

The crowd was like mini WWE with the crowd going nuts when Lashley hit the ring with the crowd giving no doubt to who their favorite was, Lashley’s two opponents must have came up with a game plan prior to the match as they worked together to start the match, but Lashley was in World Championship form and was overpowering two wrestlers who are no lightweights themselves and then something happened… Lashley slammed Shiozaki hard onto the mat and when Shiozaki cried out in pain and reaching for his leg, help came from the WLW staff as they rushed to assist the Japanese Superstar. Lashley went to assist Shiozaki with Godeker outside the ring and, with Lashleys guard down, Shiozaki showed his true colors and attacked him as Godeker quickly entering the ring to assist him. The two wrestlers who each come from a different background had one thing in common and that was to get a win off the former ECW Champion but when it came to the time for each of them to get the pinfall on him, they broke up the count before the other one could get the win.

A perfect ambush from Go Shiozaki.

This was a very exciting match as the crowd was rallying Lashley to get back on the offensive. When Lashley would get the edge, Godeker and Shiozaki would stop the momentum and vice versa. It looked to be a shocking ending to Lashley’s WLW debut but when the two new friends had a disagreement, Lashley struck and overwhelmed them with power and speed and in the blink of an eye Lashley and the crowd were as one when he was able to pin Godeker for the 1-2-3. Though they were unsuccessful, Go Shiozaki and Godeker shook Lashley’s hands out of respect for such a great match.

During the main event Marc Godeker proved he was more than capable of hanging with some of the best in the business.

The question I had on whether or not Godeker would be able to hang with the two Superstars was answered with a resounding YES, as he more than held his own in one of the most exciting matches in WLW history. A match that will go on in history in WLW along with, Derek Stone’s battles with the great One Man Gang, Kenta Kobashi taking on Wade Chism and when a young Trevor Rhodes defeated Rick Steiner and Wade Chism in a Three-way match to win the WLW Heavyweight Title.

Before the night was over Bobby asked for the microphone. With Lashley’s speech and his actions throughout the day, he made me a fan of his for life. He stated that he had a passion for the sport and he missed the fans, he said that he does what he loves, not for the money as he has plenty of that, He also said that he has a desire to be back on TV soon. He encouraged any fans that saw him on the street to not be shy and come up to him and shake his hand and introduce themselves. He said that he doesn’t take very many independent bookings but when a WWE Hall of Farmer calls you and tells you to work a show, you listen. He thanked not only Harley, but his wife BJ for the opportunity to work with WLW and to be close to the fans once again.

Because I took the drive to Sedalia I was able to meet one of the most impressive wrestlers in person that I have ever seen, and quite frankly is one of the few that is better than advertised. Bobby Lashley has all the tools to be on top of the sport and I am amazed that TNA has not jumped on him as he could really be the one guy who they could sign that could make a difference in closing the gap between the two organizations.

I hope to see you at an independent show soon and, till next time, drive carefully, take care of yourself, and don’t forget to check out Missouri Wrestling Revival.
