Long Road Back: Espinosa Returns To The Top

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 20, 2013

 photo IMG_1852_zps92cb59d1.jpg

For the second time in his career Brandon Espinosa lays claim to the MMWA Heavyweight Championship.

By Patrick Brandmeyer

It was a long and winding road between title reigns for Brandon Espinosa.

He had held the Junior Heavyweight, Television, and Battle Royal Championships in the MMWA, but the “big belt” is the goal of any wrestler in a promotion. Winning the King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament in October of 2011 paved the way for him to challenge for the Heavyweight Title…and he definitely helped his cause by defeating then-champion Gary Jackson in the finals.

Many people expected him to cash in his opportunity at the earliest possible show…but he bided his time until he was ready. He suffered a disqualification loss to Jackson in December, but was granted a rematch in January 2012 and finally won the belt at that time.

During that time period, Espinosa was branching out in his wrestling career. He had become a consistent competitor on the roster of Ohio Valley Wrestling and also won championships in other Midwest promotions. With his focus divided, one had to wonder if the MMWA Heavyweight Title was foremost on his mind. After successful title defenses against Ace Hawkins and LaMarcus Clinton, he needed help from bodyguard Eric Brewer to hang onto the gold against the former champion Gary Jackson in April. Espinosa lost the title back to Gary in May and disappeared from the St. Louis wrestling scene for most of the calendar year.

While Espinosa traveled all over the Midwest and made his name on the national scene, he felt like there was unfinished business on the home front. When he made his surprise return to the South Broadway Athletic Club in December, he made his intentions clear: He wanted to regain his championship status.

He wasted no time in defeating Max Archer for the Junior Heavyweight Title, but another man had his eye on the Heavyweight Title: Espinosa’s former trainee Dave Osborne. Osborne had won the second annual King Of St. Louis Cable Tournament and wanted the belt for himself.

Espinosa was sidetracked by another name for his past as A.J. Williams returned to the ring after a lengthy absence. The two renewed their rivalry with a thrilling twenty-minute time-limit draw in January, then Espy cost Williams his chance to win the T.V. Title in February against Jimmy D. While this was going on, Osborne captured the Heavyweight belt from Jackson…meaning Espinosa had a new target at the top of the mountain.

Despite his issue with A.J., Espinosa’s primary goal never changed. When Osborne signed an open contract to defend his title at the June show, Espinosa was one of two men(along with Gary Jackson) to step up to the plate. Even after losing the Junior Heavyweight belt to A.J. earlier in the evening, Espy was ready to reclaim South Broadway’s top prize.

The chaotic nature of a triple threat match came into play as Osborne seemed to have the advantage over Jackson with a submission hold. However, Espinosa stunned him with a flying kick off the second rope and scored the pin, winning the Heavyweight Title once again!

 photo IMG_1850_zpsa39d95fb.jpg

You can see the anger in Dave Osborne’s eyes as he recovers from Espinosa’s blow to the back of his head. Can the student become focus enough to overcome the his teacher and new MMWA Champion Brandon Espinosa?

Espinosa won’t have much time to rest on his laurels as the challengers will be lining up. Former titleholders Osborne and Jackson both want their shots at the told. Old rivals like Ace Hawkins may have their eyes on the top spot. Will A.J. Williams be satisfied with the Jr. Heavyweight Title or will he want to dethrone Espy once again? We’ll find out in due time…but for now, Brandon Espinosa is the top guy in the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance!

Manager Ron Powers creates havoc in East Carondelet. SICW Wrestling returns this Saturday Old School Warriors return.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on November 20, 2012

SICW fans got their wish in October when Travis Cook told them that he would not be in attendance in East Carondelet, Illinois for the November show. The fans happiness would not last when Cook went on to make an agreement with the former Classic Wrestling Champion Ron Powers to manage his men for the night.

One fact remains with Powers and that is, you can never be sure what he will do, a loose cannon in every sense of the word. While the fans thought he would be out their to manage Cook’s men Dave Vaughn and Ken Kasa.

Powers took it on himself to offer his service to the likes of Max Archer, Bull Bronson, Jake Dirden, Alex Rudolph and his fellow henchman The Big Texan in battle against current champion Ricky Cruz.

Powers and his men did not show the usual savvy of Cook as Archer and Kasa each got disqualified for outside interference. When Powers offered his service to Rudolph, the young powerhouse decline him, only to see Gary Jackson seizing the opportunity for an edge to have Powers in his corner.

Jackson’s 3 rules applied in this

1. He came out to win

2.He refuse to lose.

3.He will cheat if he has too

4. Don’t forget the rules

Classic Gary Jackson footage.

So with that said thought Powers and Jackson often enemy’s joined forces to pick up another impressive victory in his historic career.

Powers had the experts wandering if he was scouting for more muscle but one thing was sure his number one goal was to send a clear cut message to Ricky Cruz that he had his eyes set on the CWC title as he brutally assaulted Cruz during the match.

If it would not have been for Power’s former right hand man Sean Vincent, he may have very well have taken Cruz out for good…Thankfully men like Chris Hargas, Heath Hatton and Chaz Wesson came out to stand the ground on Powers, Vaugn, Texan, Waco, and Bronson to insure that the Classic Wrestling Champion stood to fight another day.

1380 sports talk radio’s Jeff Vernetti teams up with LMC to take on Max Archer and Waco

Posted by flairwhoooooo on October 9, 2011

By Herb Simmons

Action returns to the East Carondelet Community Center when the MMWA/SICW continues to bring the fans some of the greatest action in the Midwest. Last show during the television taping for Charter Cable the fans witnessed Champion Ron Powers battle Chris Harges, with Harges having his head put through the wall and a table being broke and after having his hands full with Harges Powers managed to survive. He later became outraged with wrestling book author, play by play announcer and the voice of Wrestling Explosion Larry Matysik due to his name not being included in Matysik’s new book, “The fifty great wrestlers of all time”.

Photobucket

Ron Powers will look to put his foot down some more on young Dave Vaughn. (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

After they exchanged words Powers agreed to a challenge by Matysik that if he could beat an opponent of Matysik’s choosing then he would but Powers name in the new book. Matysik called upon Dave Vaughn to battle with Powers with the stipulation Powers had to beat Vaughn in five minutes or less. Powers couldn’t get the job done and about three minutes into the match Powers henchmen, Sean Vincent and the Big Texan entered the ring just as Vaughn had the sleeper hold locked onto Powers. With Vincent and Texan interfering this called for a DQ of Powers. As you know there shortly after I signed Powers to meet Vaughn on October 15th for the CWC title.

Photobucket

Dave Vaughn has put Powers henchmen Sean Vincent and The Big Texan to sleep. Last time he came close to do the same to Powers. Can he do it a second time? (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

Also on October 15th a special match was signed. The bright new Star LMC came to the aid of ring announcer Jeff Vernetti who is a local DJ on 1380 sports talk radio in St. Louis when Max Archer and Waco attacked Vernetti for not interviewing them. I signed a match featuring LMC & Vernetti taking on Archer and Waco in a special tag match. All the 1380 sports talk radio fans will be coming out to support Jeff and LMC.

Photobucket

There will be five other outstanding matches to round out the television taping. For tickets or special group rates fans can call 618-286-4848.

Look forward to seeing you there.

MMWA-SICW Photo Recap from Hillsdale Missouri September 25

Posted by flairwhoooooo on October 7, 2010

By Brian Kelley

On September 25th I had the opportunity for a double shot of wrestling action. First off I made my way to Hillsdale Missouri for a FREE MMWA-SICW show sponsored by the Hillsdale Police department.

A beautiful day that saw the community along with the Mayor of Hillsdale come out to check out wrestling action, during the day I spoke to many of the fans who told me this was the very first time they had a chance to see pro wrestling live.

Also in attendance was our friend Patrick Brandmeyer who got the chance to join Herb Simmons at the commentator table. Recently we advertised the MMWA-SICW open door tryout and I was able to meet for the very first time Ben Simon who impressed the management so much that he earned the Announcing job for a company that he grew up watching.

The fans also had the chance to see a true wrestling legend in person as Cowboy Bob Orton was in attendance.

The day saw some great wrestling action, plus MMWA-SICW and the Hillsdale Police Department gave away free concessions, plus gift bags, soccer balls and bicycles throughout the day.

I am going to share with you a few pictures of the days events and after the last one click onto my photobucket for a complete look at all them. MMWA-SICW returned to Fairmont Illinois later that night for a great show that my good friend Mike Van Hoogstraat was able to capture so please check back for MWR in the future for this and all your MMWA-SICW news.

Click here to see all the great pictures from MMWA-SICW in Hillsdale Missouri.
