Referee Jay King works his 500th match

Posted by flairwhoooooo on July 20, 2016

In less than 4 years, referee Jay King has worked his 500th wrestling match. MWR recently caught up with him to find out about his career.

MWR: How did you get started as a referee?

JAY: To be honest, at the time I didn’t even know about independent wrestling. I went to a Ring of Honor show and heard someone say, “Dr. King? What the hell are you doing here?” My full time job is as a veterinarian and earlier in the day I did a C-section on a dog owner by the guy asking me the question, Keith Smith. I found out he had been a wrestler for 25 years and was now a commissioner for one of the local feds. A week later when he brought his dog into the clinic to get the stitches out I just kiddingly said, “I know I’m too old to be a wrestler, but I can count to three if you need a referee!” He said they had a ref getting to retire in the next year if I was interested.

MWR: Who trained you?

JAY: The wrestler Johnny Courageous. He had never trained a referee and was willing to give it a try.

MWR: What was the training like?

JAY: Most of it was just working training matches. It’s much different than watching it on TV. You have to know all the rules and watch for everything, like a foot on the ropes while at the same time you’re trying to watch the shoulders for a three count. I would also see some spectacular move and just sort of stand there and say, “That was really cool.” The wrestlers would look at me and say, “Hey, do you want to count?” No longer just watching – I’m part of the show too.

But after a while I found myself being in the way, I didn’t know where the wrestlers were going to move after certain wrestling techniques. And really after you understand that after a suplex you get up one way, it gets pretty easy. So I asked Johnny to give me basic wrestling training so I could be a better referee. I didn’t learn anything fancy, but I can see the “space” in the ring now.

MWR: What do you remember about your first match?

JAY: Actually my first match was a battle royal, so I just stood outside the ring and didn’t do much. The same show I worked with Ken Kasa and Jimmy D. When I went to do the pat down, Jimmy D raised his foot and kicked me right in the groin. I quickly learned where to keep my hands.

MWR: Did you grow up watching wrestling?

JAY: Well, I’m an old guy so I grew up watching Wrestling at the Chase. I remember my grandpa would drag the mattress into the living room every Saturday night and we would lay there until I fell asleep. The good thing was they showed it again on Sunday morning so I could see anything I missed. Later on in St. Louis you could watch World Class and some of the southern US shows. In college I could get AWA, WWF(E) and WCW. I guess I’ve watched a lot of wrestling in my life.

MWR: What organizations have you refereed for?

JAY: My first match was with MMWA. Then SICW and Dynamo Pro. Since then I’ve also worked for NWA Central States, High Risk Wrestling, Half Pint Brawlers, Extreme Midget Wrestling, PWCS, Pro Wrestling Epic, Fist Combat Wrestling, Beyond Wrestling, Anarchy, and the Cauliflower Alley in Las Vegas.

MWR: What wrestlers have you worked with the most?

7

JAY: I keep a list of every match I’ve worked. Out of 500 matches, I’ve refed 53 with Brandon Espinosa. I guess that makes sense since he works for three of the feds that I do. Following him would be Jake Dirden (44), Gary Jackson (39), and Ricky Cruz (35). I won’t say I have any favorites because I don’t want to seem impartial. Plus, I don’t want anyone to be upset and take it out on me in the ring.

MWR: Have you been hurt in the ring?

Jay: I’ve been punched, kicked, thrown out of the ring, choked out, been in a cross face, squashed between Big Texan and Frankie Wyatt (almost 700lbs of meat), and had by head split open with a steel chair. On that last one, I asked one of the wrestlers if I need stitches. His reply, “That should scab nicely.” After that, I think the boys in the locker room respected me more because I bleed with them.

MWR: What has been your favorite match that you’ve worked?

JAY: Several months ago I worked a match with Little Kato and Beautiful Bobby, two midgets. Usually as a ref, I’m suppose to be invisible. Only being seen for counts and enforce the rules. With those guys there were so many spots that I was, well, part of the show. They were yelling at me, I had to get untangle from the ropes, and then at one point when one would kick out he would sling the other one into the air where I had to catch them. At one point I tried to throw Kato out of the ring (after he told me to do it to Bobby). That was so much fun.

MWR: What is the hardest part of being a referee?

JAY: Staying out of the way! When you get two guys running back and forth in a 20 foot ring it is sometimes hard not to be where they are. Then you do a three way, tag team, or 4 tag team match…at some point you know all of them are going to be in the ring. Less space for me.
The worse time started with three guys in the ring. Then came in Sabu. Soon he had a chair that he was throwing all over the place. Then a table. I was ducking and running for my life. Sabu and Ken Kasa went through the table and I had to dive over them to get to the other wrestlers for the three count.

MWR: How was the 500th match?

JAY: It was the “Legends vs Monsters” match: Gary Jackson, Cowboy Bob Orton, and Ron Powers vs Vic the Bruiser, Kahagas, and Atilla Kahn. Anytime you two of those guys in a ring together you know it’s going to be a wild match, but all six…I had my hands full.

MWR: So 500 matches. What’s next?

JAY: I’m usually working 3 shows a month (one month 8), but as long as I’m having fun, I’m just going to keep doing it. One thing I do ask the wrestlers, if you aren’t going to be able to hold the other guy down for a three count, please do it close to the ropes. For me, getting down for a count is easy but getting up sometimes can be hard. If you are close to the ropes, I can at least pull myself back up.

MMWA-SICW Open Door tryouts rundown from Patrick Brandmeyer with photos from Mike Van Hoogstraat.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 29, 2010

Editors Note: Last week MMWA-SICW open their doors literly to all aspiring wrestlers to have the chance to work with the 2009 MWR Promotion of the Year.

MMWA-SICW has five shows in the works for September and in 2010 fans have had the pleasure to see Donovan Ruddick, Brandon Espinosa, Ace Hawkins, Mark Sterling and most recently Mephisto make their way to the promotion.

I am sad to say that I was unable to attend due to prior commitments but I knew that MWR fans would have a great look into the happenings of this historic event thanks to Pro Wrestling expert Patrick Brandmeyer being able to attend as well as MWR Photographer Mike Van Hoogstraat.

I now give you Patrick and Mike with the rundown on the Open door tryouts.

Which one of these aspiring wrestlers and personalities will make a mark in the future at MMWA-SICW?(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

I’ve been fortunate to get fairly close to the local wrestling scene…case in point, being invited by Tim Miller to the MMWA-SICW tryout in East Carondelet this past Thursday. Saw several familiar faces in attendance as well as some Broadway trainees and some out-of-towners.

Some of the familiar faces for MWR fans and new one lined up to speak to Keith Smith, Tim Miller and Jim Harris (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

The main Broadway representatives were Tim himself, Keith Smith, and referee Jim Harris. They laid out what Broadway has to offer: Exposure in a great wrestling market in front of good audiences, as well as T.V. time(via their local-access program) and a decent payday. Broadway is stepping up their schedule in a major way in September, so the roster will be expanding in the near future…September has the usual shows at South Broadway and East Carondelet as well as their debut in Hillsdale, MO and a return to Fairmont City. The injured A.J. Williams was also in attendance as well as Ace Hawkins.

They had one interviewer/commentator tryout named Ben Simon who did a fine job and will apparently be at their East Carondelet show this weekend.

Blake Steel is one of the best promo men in the sport today, it was no surprise that he was dead on in showing his skills.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Ben Simon was impressive in his effort to win a spot as a professional announcer, here he gets words from Ian Storm (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Rick Stone and Ben Simon looks to have a heated conversation.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

New faces try their hands on the mic.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Tim Miller assist the new comers with their promos, with advice and pointers.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Keith asked why I didn’t try out for that spot…and I didn’t really have a good answer for him. Haven’t gotten behind that particular microphone since the GCW days and wouldn’t mind doing it again sometime!

Those in attendance got a chance to prove themselves behind a microphone and also in the ring. The trainees practiced in the ring with Johnny Courageous while those with more experience under their belt had full-fledged matches with the likes of Courageous, Brandon Espinosa, and Sean Vincent.

Former MMWA-SICW manager The Magic Man is always entertaining and I have him hoping for his return to the promotion for some time now. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

The Magic Man was in the house and did a classic promo to kick things off…

Was good to see former GCW competitor Ian Storm in the house as well as Springfield IL’s Blake Steel.

Former GCW wrestler Ian Storm gets the upperhand on one of the Midwest top Wrestlers Brandon Espinosa while Ref Eric Davis looks on. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Not so fast Storm, what you dish out the talented Espinosa will give you that and more. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Is Eric Allen the best wrestler in Illinois? That is what he will tell you.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Sean Vincent catches Allen and lets him know about it. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Could moments like this lead to a big feud at MMWA-SICW in the future? My money is on the fact that Steel will not forget Espinosa actions during the tryout.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Also saw a couple of guys who have flown under the local radar to some extent, Kurt Styles and Rick Stone. One of the more decorated local grapplers was in the house as Eric Allen sought to add another notch to his resume.

A group from Jefferson City arrived later in the tryout…some did better than others.
Espinosa was quick to let one of them know about an early mistake in their practice matchup.

New faces try their hand at the very difficult skill of wrestling.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Critiques followed each matchup in the hopes that each wrestler would learn and work to improve. Vincent had a good short sprint with one of the Jeff City upstarts who went by “Bill Murray”(no relation).

Keith Smith and Herb Simmons have seen it all in their many years in the business, they watch the proceedings with a close eye for future talent. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

I’m always open to a learning experience and I feel like I’ve learned more in the past few years of wrestling viewing than at any other time in my nineteen(!) years of following the industry. I have all the respect in the world for anyone who steps in a wrestling ring because I couldn’t do what they do. I don’t think lack of in-ring experience disqualifies a person completely from having an opinion about wrestling…though I suppose I would respect the opinion of a wrestler over a non-wrestler.

Look for recaps from both of the shows that MMWA-SICW had in August in the near future at MWR.

MMWA-SICW July 11 recap, part two

Posted by reimaginejournalism on August 2, 2009

By Kari Williams

As the second show of the night for the MMWA wrestlers, some of them pulled double duty to please the fans at South Broadway Athletic Club. Depsite the show starting late due to the earlier show in Dupo, the wrestlers delivered exactly what the fans wanted to see, with a few surprise returns mixed in.

Heavyweight Champion Gary Jackson and his arch-rival Shaft, with Travis Cook, clashed in the main event. Shaft took the coward’s way out on this exchange, attacking Jackson from behind to start the match. His dastardly antics continued, as Cook interfered, giving Shaft the distinct advantage.

The war made its way to the outside for the second time, and Jackson got his revenge and took over.

The champion looked poised for victory, and the Connection must have sensed this, because Junior Heavyweight Champion Dave Vaughn ran into the ring and attacked Jackson while Cook distracted the referee. All hell broke loose, as Phil E. Blunt, Cook and Shaft assaulted Jackson.

Just when it looked like nobody would come to Jackson’s aid, Commissioner Keith Smith ran from the announcer’s table to do some damage. Even MMWA Promoter Tony Casta got in the mix, as he delivered an old school flying headscissors to Shaft.

Smith revealed that he has become a licensed wrestler in the state of Missouri, and showed The Connection, the papers to prove it.

Fan favorites Johnny Courageous and A.J. Williams put on, arguably, the best match of the night prior to the main event. Courageous tried to eliminate Williams’ key moves by viciously attacking both the arm and the leg.

Not one to be deterred, Williams fought with everything he had, even going so far as to attempt a moonsault within the first five minutes.

These two men took each other to the limit. Despite Courageous trying to remove the possibility of the superkick from Willilams’ arsenal, Williams continued to put Courageous to the test. The match ended in controversy, as both men had the other’s pinned to the mat.

Blade wrestled Vaughn, accompanied Travis Cook, in a non-title match. Blade controlled the better part of the bout, but that is not to say that Vaughn was overmatched. After Blade connected with an elbow drop from the top rope, Cook began to look worried.

Vaughn may have felt that his title could be in jeopardy in the future, if Blade were to win the match—and that lit a fire under Vaughn, who maintained the lead from the momet he connected with a belly to belly suplex.

However, the fans distracted Vaughn, if only for a moment, which almost caused Blade to get the quick win. Vaughn rapidly regained focus and defeated Blade with the spear in just under 10 minutes.

During intermission, wrestlers came to ringside to sign autographs and take pictures with fans.

Destiny Diamond had the chance to make up for her shortcomings against Alexis in Dupo, as the two went at it again, with the belt on the line. Alexis started the match off with the early advantage, but Diamond quickly took over, using nearly every illegal tactic possible. From this point on, both women worked hard to either maintain or regain control. Alexis refused to let her belt slip away, and Diamond wanted nothing more than to finally earn the belt. Diamond pulled out a win in 7:21 with a tornado DDT. After the match, Alexis appeared to have injured her neck. She was helped to the locker room.

A battle royal took place, featuring Vaughn, Shaft, Williams, Blade, Courageous, Jaysin Static and Core. Bodies flew in every direction, and eliminations occurred at a rapid pace, with Core and Static simultaneously taking each other out, as was the same for Courageous and Williams. Shaft and Blade were eliminated next, respectively, leaving Vaughn as the sole winner.

Static and Core wrestled for the second time this night in the opening contest. Fans distracted Core from the get go, causing Static to try and steal a quick victory. In this back and forth battle, the two went in and out of the ring. In one of the pivotal moments, Static prepared to launch onto Core, who stood on the outside of the ring, but Core saw Static coming and got him caught up in the ropes. That one misstep by Static allowed Core to take the advantage. But Static’s resiliency forced him to continue, and he pinned Core, gaining retribution for his earlier loss.
