2012 MWR Lifetime Achievement Award: Herb Simmons

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 5, 2013

When little Herbie Simmons was just a kid running around the Roosevelt Homes housing project in East St. Louis, the only thing he slowed down for was to watch the famous “Wrestling at the Chase” on KPLR-TV.

Who would have expected that almost five decades later, Herb Simmons would be named the winner of one of the biggest Missouri Wrestling Revival awards?

In the interim, along with a highly-respected career in public safety and politics, Herb got hooked on professional wrestling. His efforts as an independent promoter took him through the full gamut of good and bad, from the sellout crowds to the poor turnouts that had him reaching into his pocket to pay the boys. Simmons has seen it all and done it all, to the everlasting benefit of wrestling in Missouri, Illinois and throughout the Midwest.

Therefore, Herb Simmons is the recipient of the 2012 MWR Lifetime Achievement Award.

He actually got involved with the business of wrestling after becoming friends with Tony Casta in 1979, who wrestled and trained new talent at the South Broadway Athletic Club. Dating back well into the 1950s, South Broadway had presented independent shows. Herb began doing the tv commentary for a cable show from South Broadway in 1980. Simmons soon thereafter began running shows, with the help of Casta, under the Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling banner.

A change-over in who was running wrestling at South Broadway culminated with Casta in charge, and he used the name Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance. Simmons had licenses to promote in both Missouri and Illinois. He popped several big cards at the fairgrounds in Belleville.

During 1984, Herb developed a friendship with Larry Matysik, the protégé of the famous Sam Muchnick. After Sam’s retirement, Larry had run on his own at The Checkerdome and Kiel Auditorium before being swept up in the World Wrestling Federation expansion. Even though Matysik was working for Vince McMahon and the WWF, he also joined Simmons in several independent cards. Actually, the WWF made a deal with Simmons and used Herb’s license a few times due to Illinois athletic commission rules in the early parts of the big wrestling war.

And he also put Herb together with King Kong Brody. That trio – Simmons, Matysik and Brody – ran numerous cards in the two state area. Topping the bills with major league stars like Brody, Crusher Blackwell, Terry Funk, Spike Huber, Abdullah the Butcher and others, they filled the undercard with young guys getting started. Among them by 1988 were Gary Jackson and Ron Powers. Of course, Simmons also regularly had his dear friend Mickey Garagiola on hand and Mickey was always a big favorite for the audience.

The group ran in some unique locations. A couple cards were at the Fairmount Race Track. Biggest of all – the one and likely only wrestling program to be presented at the famous Fox Theater in St. Louis in 1988.

In the period that followed, after Brody’s tragic death, Herb kept plugging away. Some cards were on his own, a few were with Matysik, some with Casta. In 1993, he began running SICW shows in his adopted hometown of East Carondelet, Illinois. Added together, Simmons ran cards everywhere from Watseka, Illinois to Carmi, Illinois, to Rolla, Missouri.

Herb was a key component in getting Matysik to produce the Classic St. Louis Wrestling series of DVDs once he discovered the 60-hours of “Wrestling at the Chase” Larry had taped for his own use. Simmons also encouraged Larry to begin writing and soon Matysik’s first book was in print in 2005.

Over the years, Simmons’ shows gave countless young local wrestlers a chance to perform and develop. His desire to keep the tradition of St. Louis wrestling alive was just as important as he brought in the likes of Dory Funk, Jr., Von Raschke, Harley Race, Rocky Johnson, Gerry Brisco, Ted DiBiase, Lanny Poffo, The Honky Tonk Man and so many others to the area.

Most recently, Simmons has joined Matysik once again to produce the popular television show “SICW Wrestling Explosion” for Charter Cable in Illinois. They thought it would last two months, and now it’s been two years! All the action and all the opportunity for local talent is still there as Simmons regularly promotes cards in the St. Louis area. He meets and greets every fan with a smile and an open ear.

As Ron Powers said about Simmons: “Herb’s heart is with it. His heart is in the right place.” Indeed, Simmons has made a huge impact in the sport over some 30 years. His contributions have been meaningful and unquestioned. All that from little Herbie, slowing down only to watch “Wrestling at the Chase.”

It is obvious why MWR has chosen Herb Simmons to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2012.

“Murphy vows to destroy SICW” ?

Posted by flairwhoooooo on July 22, 2012

Since his return to the ring, Matt Murphy has found himself in the thick of many top stories around the Midwest. He has been featured in main event matches in Kansas City ,upsetting WWE HOF Ted Dibiase in Iowa and last fall he returned for a historic match at the WLW/ WWE/ NOAH annual camp show in Eldon, Missouri. – Photo Credit Brian Kelley

Editor’s note: While we were thrilled to find out that Matt Murphy was promoted to work with SICW, a couple a months ago, that happiness has tuned into a very volatile situation. Murphy would go on to lose in stunning fashion to the young beast Alexander Rudolph in his debut.

Since that time, Matt Murphy has had animosity towards SICW promoter Herb Simmons, announcer Larry Matysik, the wrestlers in the back and the fans out front.

In a war of words coming in from both sides, MWR stance with all of them is that they each are free to let the world hear their side of this story, in hopes that cooler heads will prevail in the end.

For the fans that are just joining us today for the first time, glad to have you at MWR and feel free to catch up with the first shot in this argument from Matt Murphy.

Matt Murphy calls out Larry Matysik and Herb Simmons after SICW Debut.

Click here to hear his reply to the accusations of Matt Murphy.

Promoter Herb Simmons has worked with some of the very best and most dangerous meant in the sport including Bruiser Brody and Ron Powers. Yet Murphy is a man that does not have the power of Brody and Powers but is able to be just as dangerous in his attacks, as he is normally one step ahead of his opponents.

SICW promoter Herb Simmons responds to “All That” Matt Murphy.

Letter sent via Matt Murphy

In today’s digital age, it doesn’t take much to call yourself a writer. You don’t need talent, ability to engage an audience, or even mastery of the Queen’s English. You just peck away at your keyboard, hit Send, and you’re published. Case in point: Herb Simmons’ half-coherent rant that was posted on Missouri Wrestling Revival concerning my debut with SICW. You’d think that a guy who calls an author, Larry Matysik, his friend would have the sense to reach out for some proofreading help before sending off his letter to Brian Kelley for web publication. But the poor grammar and style Herb used, while certainly as irritating to all of you as it was to me and quite possibly a felony in the U.K., isn’t what prompted my rebuttal.

His response to me should have contained just two words. “Thank you.”

Quick backstory, for those of you joining this program already in-progress: International wrestling star and bestselling author Matt Murphy, kindly (and foolishly) thinking it would be good for the wrestling business, tried to breathe some life back into the corpse known as St. Louis wrestling when he agreed to make some appearances for SICW. While most promotions would have rolled out the red carpet for Murphy, SICW instead stabbed him in the back. Yet, despite a lackluster and controversial debut, our hero still captured the interest of sponsors, who signed on to help fund SICW for the next two years. In one night, despite it being one of the worst nights in his wrestling career, Matt Murphy did more for SICW than anyone who ever held a spot on the roster before him. But did promoter Herb Simmons give due credit? No. He looked the gift horse in the mouth and then spit on it.

Everyone up to speed now? Good. Let’s move on.

Herb showered Larry Matysik with praise in his letter. He said that Larry is honest and doesn’t need to prove himself to anyone. Was he honest when he weaseled his way into a book deal for an idea that I pitched and a manuscript that I had already delivered to the publisher? Was he honest when he tried ending my storied career by sicking the unstable super-heavyweight behemoth Alexander Rudolph on me after leading me to believe I would be competing against someone in my weight class? Herb called Larry Matysik a household name. To paraphrase the great Jim Cornette, “Larry Matysik might be a household name, but so is garbage, and it stinks when it gets old, too.”

Larry Matysik has made a living in wrestling as a pencil-pusher and a jabber-mouth. Is that not enough? Wrestlers should treat him as an equal, or as if he’s better than us? The first time I was lifted six feet in the air and slammed onto the plywood and metal beams, I earned more respect in this business than anyone who’s never survived that experience. Sure, he’s a legend, as far as announcers go, but is it really saying anything to call yourself the finest slice of bologna in a steakhouse? This is the wrestling business. Wrestlers are the stars. Announcers, ring crew, referees…they’re all supporting cast, and it would be best for everyone involved in the business if the supporting cast remembered their place at the end of the catering line.

I don’t like old people. Call it one of my few character flaws, but I don’t like them. I don’t like the way they drive, smell, reminisce, beg pardon, and gossip. But I especially don’t like old people who talk tough to me. I don’t discriminate: I’m an equal-opportunity ass-kicker, and I will hit an old man, not just because I dislike old people, but because I do what I can to be politically correct. Larry and Herb are treading on thin ice with me, and every misspelled word Herb wrote cracked the ice just a little more.

“Murphy vows to destroy SICW”?
Is the title of this article but make no bones about it wrestling fans, Murphy is a real threat to our friend Herb Simmons and Larry Matysik. While he can wrestle with the best of them, he has showed recently that he prefers to take short cuts and play mind games. -– Photo Credit Brian Kelley

I return to SICW on August 18th. When I look across that ring and into my opponent’s half-awestruck and half-terrified eyes, I’m going to see Larry Matysik and Herb Simmons staring back at me. Every strike and every hold will reflect my anger towards the men who pull the strings at SICW. I hope my opponent has a bright future in professional wrestling, because bright wrestling futures are a beautiful thing, and right now I feel like destroying something beautiful.

King Auto Sales in Cahokia, Illinois joins sponsorship team of SICW! Plus a special thank you to MWR.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on July 18, 2012

Promoter Herb Simmons contacted the MWR office and had more exciting news that he wanted to share with the fans of MRW.

After the article regarding the new premier sponsorship’s that the SICW recently secured for their television “Wrestling Explosion” program, Simmons has since received a call from another sponsor that had read the article on the MWR site.

Simmons was kind enough  to let us know that “He appreciated MWR for the coverage that was given and he stated its proof that the MWR site has a huge following”. He went on to say that he “Is receiving comments on a daily basis from fans that are checking out the site. I have been telling Brian for some time that there are many fans out there that appreciate all the hard work he, Dubray Tallman and the MWR team continues to puts into his business. Not only are the fans checking out the site but now creditable sponsors are calling wanting to be a part of the “Wrestling Explosion” program. Brian and the MWR team  should be proud and so should every, worker, promoter and fan that follows his site. Without the work he puts into it the great work that the workers do and the promotion would go un-noticed.

Matt Murphy calls out Larry Matysik and Herb Simmons after SICW Debut.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 27, 2012

Photobucket

Alexander Rudolph chokes Murphy with his hair….Did SICW ambush Matt Murphy?? – Photo Credit Brian Kelley

Sent to MWR from “All That” Matt Murphy.

Since the day I came in to the wrestling business in 1999, I’ve been a success.  I’ve made a name for myself all over the world, and I’ve fought for and earned every ounce of respect I’ve been shown.  But I have never felt as disrespected and humiliated as I felt June 16th night in SICW.

I didn’t ask to come to SICW.  Larry Matysik reached out to me.  He called me and said, “I’d love to have you come in and wrestle for us.  I think you’d really connect with these fans.  We’ll put you in there with a young up-and-comer, really make you look like a star.”

I had heard great things about the fans and the talent at SICW, so I said, “Sure, Larry.  I’d be glad to do it.”

I felt good about returning to wrestle in the St. Louis area.  As everyone knows, St. Louis has a long and storied history in professional wrestling.  It was once known as the class of the business.  Where other territories promoted shows under spotlights in carnival tents, St. Louis shows were held under chandeliers.  Where toothless half-wits filled the seats in every other territory in the world, the fans of St. Louis wore suits and gowns and sitting among them were the city’s most prominent businessmen and public figures.

I’ve accomplished some great things in St. Louis: winning titles, headlining major events, competing for WWE in front of a sold-out crowd at the Savvis Center and, of course, putting the legendary St. Louis Blues enforcer Tony Twist on his back with a right hand to the jaw.

I came to SICW to wrestle, but what I walked into was an ambush.  Everyone was in on it: the entire SICW roster, the fans, even the referee.  And Larry Matysik and Herb Simmons orchestrated the whole thing.

Larry promised me a young up-and-comer.  And what he booked me against was Alexander Rudolph.  I’d heard of him and knew how dangerous he could be.  But I’ve battled and beaten giants (Meng, The Barbarian, The Harris Brothers, Takeshi Morishima, just to name a few), and I was confident that I would add Alexander Rudolph to that impressive list.  I would have, too, had it been a one-on-one match.  But I was up against everyone in the building that night, from my opponent to the locker room to the lady selling nachos to the toothless geriatrics sitting in most of the seats.  Even I couldn’t overcome those odds.

Although we compete with each other on the Amazon bestseller list, I’ve always respected Larry Matysik, even liked him.  I thought he was one of the good guys in the business.  But what happened Saturday night was a painful reminder that there are no good guys in wrestling.

Speaking of good guys, where were they when Alexander Rudolph attacked me after the match?  Where were the heroes of SICW?

Where was Ricky Cruz?  Slicking his hair back?  Polishing his new Classic Wrestling Championship belt?

Where was Gary Jackson?  Too busy telling everyone in the locker room that he was a big-time star when most of them were still in diapers?

Where was Sean Vincent?

Where were the heroes?

Where were you, Larry?

I’ll give credit where it’s due.  I didn’t see it coming.  SICW made one of its most promising stars, Alexander Rudolph, look like a superstar when he mopped the canvas with “All That” Matt Murphy, a bona fide Midwest legend.  But Larry and Herb didn’t think their devious plan through.  When Herb signed me to wrestle for SICW, he signed me for 6 shows.  They played their hand too early.  And now they’re stuck with me for 5 more shows.  That’s 5 more opportunities for me to destroy SICW.

Enjoy this victory.  Savor every moment between now and the night I come back.  Because when I return, everyone who was involved in the ambush and everyone who pledges allegiance to SICW will suffer.  I’m going to tear apart SICW one piece at a time.  After I’ve dismantled SICW limb from limb, I’m going to rip out its heart, Larry Matysik, and finally close the book on the history of St. Louis wrestling.

Ricky Cruz seeks revenge on Ron Powers plus MsChif and Serenity debuts in East Carondelet this Saturday .

Posted by flairwhoooooo on December 5, 2011

By Brian Kelley

MMWA-SICW and promoter Herb Simmons will be giving you, the fans a Christmas show that you will not soon forget. First he has sent word that as a holiday gift for fans of women wrestling, there will be a debut at SICW of two of the best today going at it one on one.

Photobucket

It will be ST Louis’s own and arguably the best female wrestler to come out of the Midwest since Penny Banner and there is  no doubtshe is  the most popular star in St Louis today, Thats right  “Your souls Tormentor” MsChif will debut for MMWA-SICW.

Photobucket
Fans young and old, are thrilled to see MsChif in action, can Serenity be a scrooge and get a victory over one of the very best females in the world?

Her opponent will be rising female star Serenity.

Photobucket

This will mark only the second time since these two have met. The first was March 27, 2010 at HVW during a tag match as Serenity teamed up with Florida star Jessika Haze in a losing effort against MsChif and the Midwest Sweetheart Santana G.

The experts are excited about this match up and feel as if Serenity, who at that time during their first match was very new to ring   and not ready for MsChif . She has improved her game, to be not only be in a match with MsChif, but able to capture the biggest win in her career this Saturday night.

There has been no doubt that the name Serenity has been the talk of the Midwest in Central Illinois in 2011 ,  and many feel thst om 2012  it may be a year the year Serenity in the female division.

We were able to catch up with MsChif on her match this coming Saturday December 10th in East Carondelet , Illinois.

Fans at the MMWA-SICW in East Carondelet will be treated to a rocking and bruising Christmas as Ricky Cruz looks to get retribution on Ron Powers this Saturday. Fans last month got to see one of the most brutal beat down ever in MMWA-SICW history.

Let’s look back at a small recap from the last recap at MWR Mayhem in East Carondelet as Ricky Cruz feels the wrath of Ron Powers- World War 3 is just beginning.

Cruz admitted that he centered his efforts on the St. Louis area because it was the base for Powers. When Powers worked in Puerto Rico several years ago, according to Cruz, Powers used his piledriver and other assorted violent tactics to sideline several wrestlers – one of whom was Cruz’ older brother. That brother suffered neck damage and still has pain even after curtailing his career. Cruz swore to get revenge on Powers, especially after seeing Powers used a piledriver against Dave Vaughn on the floor Oct. 15.

Cruz promised to be “Powers’ judge, jury and executioner.”

This brought Powers to the ring.Ron denied knowing about Cruz’ brother. He also graphically described being a young kid with a big reputation alone in Puerto Rico, billed as the protégé of Bruiser Brody, fighting off attacks from unexpected sources and pulling out the stops in every match. He added that he had changed, was now a father of three himself and only carried on as a Wildman to satisfy the fans and promoter Herb Simmons, along with longtime mentor Larry Matysik. He apologized to Cruz, said he was ready to quit, would give Cruz the Classic title, and if he had injured the brother was sincerely sorry and wrong.

To see what happen next please click here. ( Fans with a weak stomach be prepared for the images of the aftermath is very graphic.

MWR was able to catch up with Ryan Cruz this weekend who had this warning to the CCW Champion Ron Powers.

Do not miss this historic night of action, December 10th in East Carondelet Illinois for a Christmas celebration Christmas style.

Ring of Honor electrifies ST Louis, then party like rock stars with Party Animal Radio and MWR.

By Brian Kelley

On the way to cover the red hot promotion in Kansas City Saturday to cover Metro Pro Wrestling I received a call from our good friends at Party Animal Radio. If anything that I have learn from the past is that when I hear from them, good times are just around the corner.

With Ring of Honor returning to ST Louis at the Collinsville Gateway Center, Dubray and I was already planning on checking out the hard hitting action with our good friend promoter Herb Simmons, Keith Smith and many other friends.

After hearing, the good news that there was going to be a special MEET/GREET/AND EAT!!! With the stars from Ring of Honor! I was on the road so I got on the wire to get ahold of my good friend Kari Williams to post the news straight to MWR. For a measly ten dollars fans could have a cheeseburger and fries with the stars from Ring of Honor!

Still the fans were treated to a Sunday matinée of Ring of Honor wrestling. My friends know I love wrestling but for me to miss Sunday NFL football, the show will have to be a guaranteed good time. With ROH World Champion Davey Richards announced to be in action that was all the info I need to know that the TIVO would have to tape the Denver Bronco game.

Pro Wrestling Phoenix crew made the trip from Council Bluffs Iowa to check out the red hot ROH action.

Photobucket

Fans have fun before the ROH show.

Ring of Honor brings to the ring no nonsense, hard hitting action the way it is supposed to be. Filled with an awesome roster including the ROH Champ Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas formally of WWE fame as well as former TNA star and current ROH TV Champion Jay Lethal mixed in with the likes of MsChif , El Generico, Jimmy Jacobs, Steve Corino, Future Shock, Michael Elgin, and Tommaso Ciampa including a killer main event as the All Night Express (Rhett Titus and Kenny King) proved that they were real when they defeated The American Wolves (Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards).
A frog splash from Rhett Titus and a shooting star press from Kenny King that allowed King to pin Edwards for the victory. Mutual respect all around after the match, but Edwards told his partner “See you at Final Battle” iPPV on December 23, 2011 – 7:30pm Manhattan Center (Hammerstein Ballroom) , New York , New York.

The 2011 Cauliflower Alley Club 2011 Red Bastein Friendship Award recipient Darla Staggs was in attendance for her very first ROH experience. Darla has been a fan and supporter of pro wrestling for many years, when I asked her what she thought of the show she quickly replied “I Haven’t seen wrestling like this in a long time….fantastic show!!!”

Photobucket

Darla Staggs is in the clutches of 25 year wrestling vet Keith Smith and his lovely wife Michelle.

This coming from a woman who was live for many of the great Wrestling at the Chase shows in ST Louis’s golden era of pro wrestling is quite a compliment.

I was happy to run into “ECW Original” Angel after the show, Angel is looking in awesome shape and ready to run over the competition and a ROH run for the King of the Streets would be one that I would be very interested in seeing myself.

Photobucket

Young rising local star Aiden Young may not have a title yet but still has a beautiful women to come check out ROH with.

Photobucket

SICW Promoter Herb Simmons was on hand to check out ROH. Fans can check out SICW this Saturday in East Carondelet Il along with CWC Champ Ron Powers.

Also in attendance was one of the top tag teams today the Kentucky Buffett of Alex Castle and Matt Cage, Aiden Young former GCW Star Mike Sharona and the Manager of Champions Travis Cook.

Then it was off for ROH –Party Animal Radio after party 2011, if you missed the last ROH after party click here for all the great times from 7-23-2010.

This time the party was at the 5th Quarter Bar & Grill and as usual, we got there early and sat with our friends Drew, Gary and Ben while waiting on the ROH Stars to show up as they showered and if they were like us, got lost in the big streets of Collinsville Illinois.

While we waited the waiter and waitress worked hard to take the fans orders and drinks. I was stunned to hear that their special on that night was Natural Light for only $1.00, so for $22.00 I got Dubray and I 2 hamburgers and a beer, and though some of you may be thinking that “oh yuck” Natty light but I actually like it so the night was starting off right.

Photobucket

These fans traveled from Quincy Illinois for Ring of Honor and take in the after party afterwards. Here they get an awesome picture taken with the top women wrestler ever , (Of course we are 100% biased as well as correct :)) MsChif.

The first ROH star to make her way to the bar was MsChif, who was game for some food herself with some friends. I spoke to some really cool fans that had driven from Quincy Illinois to check out ROH and was interested in getting their picture taken with Your Soul’s Tormentor – MsChif. Before She left she was more than happy to take her photo with the group of friends who made their way to check her out in another win in her hometown of St Louis against Mia Yim(w/ Prince Nana, Robert Evans, & Ernesto Osiris) via Desecrator.

Photobucket

The wrestlers takes their seats to sign autographs and take photos with some of the very best in the world today.

Fans could line up for pictures and autographs with the stars such as Kenny King, Eddie Edwards, Charlie Hass and Rhett Tittus.

The service was awesome at the 5th Quarter Bar & Grill and the food was maybe the best that I have ever had at a small bar. When I asked the waitress who they would choose a wrestler to have their picture taken with, they quickly giggled and chose the former ROH World Champion Eddie Edwards.

Photobucket

My friend Darla Staggs asked me last week at a show if I could build a promotion around one wrestler today who would it be. My answer Eddie Edwards. Edwards has the talent charisma and skills for many years to come along with one great match after another . Here he gets all the love from the girls in the house.

Photobucket

GOOD TIMES!!!

Photobucket

Has Edwards met his match???

Edwards had been smiles all night with the  girls,Edwards the number one contender for the ROH title played around with funny poses along with the girls for MWR.

Photobucket

Awesome friends of MWR along with Ricky Cruz, International superstar (on the far right), see Cruz in action in East Carondelet Illinois for SICW this Saturday.

At one table was our friend Keith Smith with family and friends along with rising star in the Midwest Ricky Cruz chilling out with laughs and great food.

While walking around I noticed a couple that were just enjoying a beer, so I introduced myself and asked if they had ever heard of MWR. The couple stated they didn’t even know wrestling was in town and really wasn’t a fan but was kind enough to take part in the MWR Photo recap of the party. Her friend wasn’t interested in taking photos but she was able to get a photo with Charlie Hass and Delirious. Hopefully, the next time ROH comes to town, they will check out the show to see just how talented these guys were.

Photobucket

Dubray and POO DOO

MWR’S Dubray Tallman was even able to find local wrestling legend Poo Doo the Cow, coming out of the farm to get his drink on.

Photobucket

CHEERS

I am not going to lie to you; I was amazed that there were so few fans that took the opportunity to come to this event, , but I can understand when there was such short notice on the event but it was easily the best value for your money all year. The ROH Stars even after a show the night before in Louisville, KY and less than 24 hours made their way to STL only to give a 110 percent in the ring then make their way to be kind to each and every one of the fans in that bar giving them memories that will last a lifetime.

Let’s take a look at the rest of this awesome night of meet and greet with the ROH Stars and fans.

You can see comedian Louie open up for the Iron Sheik’s comedy show this Saturday. My suggestion to Louie is a T-shirt would have been cheaper, and a MWR logo would have been a hell of a lot cooler.

Ron Powers’ reign of terror continues!!

Ron Powers in 2011 has been big, bad and just plain mean. To start the year he would turn on his best friend Danny Boy Hawkins giving him a beat down that was hard to watch. He would follow that up by taking Danny Boy’s Classic Wrestling Championship title while ending his career.

He was just getting started, after taking out Danny Boy he has set his sights on MMWA-SICW promoter Herb Simmons. When Simmons brought in Cowboy Bob Orton, Ted Dibiase and Dory Funk Jr so that the fans could have a chance to meet some of the all-time greats, Ron Powers in some demented way took offense to that.

In an odd pairing to say the least, Sean Vincent, the cocky and brash Canadian has been one of Powers henchmen in all of his evil deeds. Powers jealousy and rage has not only been targeted towards the legends but also newcomer LaMarcus Clinton who the fans have quickly gotten behind. Powers would challenge the high flying youngster to a match. Clinton was quickly put on the spot against one of the best ever in the Midwest in his very first year. The weight, the experience and brute strength of Powers would be too much for Clinton as Powers would get the win….but after the bell was rung; Powers continued to attack Clinton thus forcing the ref to reverse the decision in favor of the young star Clinton.

Last month in East Carondelet, Power’s ego would be front and center once again when he challenged anyone to an arm wrestling match. A MMWA-SICW security employee came out but stood no chance of beating power. Out came wrestler Pete Madden who gave it his all but quickly fell to the monster Powers when out of the back came young Chris Hargas.

Hargas one of the young studs of MMWA-SICW was fired up but not as angry as the champ seem to be as he looked on the other side of the table knowing that Hargas was in awesome shape. After several moments of stalling Powers and Hargas sat down to decide who the top arm wrestler was. At first it looked like another win for Powers but Hargas fought and never gave up until it looked as if he had Powers beat. Yet before MMWA-SICW Commissioner Keith Smith could call the victoryPowers had snapped.

Brutally attacking Hargas with chair shot after chair shot while Sean Vincent antagonized and assisted the champ. Powers quickly sent a message to Hargas that he was not amused.

Later that night during a CAC Championship match between Ron Powers and Chaz Wesson, Hargas had regrouped and though you could see he was in pain, was fired up coming through the door and after Powers. The locker room had to be emptied to separate the two and regain peace.

That leaves us to this month; Chris Hargas is set up to team up with Chaz Wesson to take on Ron Powers and Sean Vincent.
We caught up with Ron Powers and Sean Vincent moments after Hargas and Powers were separated and they had this to say.

MMWA-SICW returns August 20th in East Carondelt with a co-main event featuring two of the very best in the country when Gary Jackson meets Mark Sterling.

Get your tickets and come out of the heat into the AC at MMWA-SICW in East Carondelet.

Wow, whomever wrote this has a big misunderstanding of what I am about.

Has anyone from this site  ever interview me about any of this?

I’ll answer that…..NO! You people interview the fans, the promotors, and all the guys in the locker room, who all have tall aspirations of going to the big show. This is usually followed by a handshake or a hug. Do you want to know the truth? Like Jack said,”You can’t handle the truth”. The truth is, this was, at one time, the most brutal profession to be in. The toll it would take on your body and mind was unimagineable. Keeping injuries a secret, keeping your head on a swivel, and the lack of trust with the bookers and talent, usually, was a day to day thing.

I was, as Terry Taylor described, “wrestlings best kept secret”.

World Championship Wrestling, World Wrestling Federation, and numerous companies in Japan, all wanted me on their roster. I brought Lex (Luger)to the point of collapsing after a match at a house show. The phone would not stop ringing. I knocked out the “Great Muta” in Japan. After that tour, I almost had to change my phone number. However, I had the ability to do, what alot of wrestlers couldn’t do, say NO. I was married with kids and had a great job. I knew I couldn’t keep both sides happy, so I chose family. I would work spots for all of them periodically, but if you don’t sell your soul to Them, you were just a drone. This is where I was different. I wouldn’t sell out. Bruiser Brody always told me to take what I want, and leave be, what I don’t. I’ve followed that advice since 1987.

I might have aged, I might be 15Lbs heavier than when I retired in 2004, but I can still do my job better than anyone else, today. You see what I want to show you. You hear what I want to tell you. I have the ability to beat you in your mind, before we even lock up. When I face another man across that ring, I don’t see nervousness or excitement. I see fear in his eyes. I see him contemplate about finding another profession. I see his family look away. I can watch every match, at every show, and tell you who has potential, at a glance.

I look at your “trading card” list, and I see a few challenges, but not many. B.G. James, Mike Sydal, Sean Vincent, Mark Sterling, and Trevor Murdoch to name a few. However, back in WLW, I beat Trevor’s ass so bad, I guess he changed his name. Alot of the guys on the list, I’ve never heard of. I wont judge. As far as the rest of them, its like being really good at whiffleball, and trying to play pro baseball. You won’t make it past the first pitch.

Herb, I’m throwing a no hitter as your “Classic Heavyweight Wrestling Champion“. I know you are starting to get a little nervous about the amount of money your spending trying to knock me off. It will not happen. You brought in Danny Boy, Bob Orton, Dory Funk, and now Ted Dibiase, all to try to take me out. The only thing your doing, is turning the SICW into a grave yard. Vincent and I are just getting warmed up.

Keep sending bodies, and I’ll change my wrestling name to Kavorkian.

Is “Mean” Mason Beck the BIGGEST and most feared Wrestler in the Midwest today?

Posted by flairwhoooooo on April 8, 2011

Photobucket

You may laugh at the fear in that kids eyes in the back but I have seen the same look ringside for some of Becks victims in the ring.

MWR fans throughout the three plus years that MWR has been in existence, there has been many who feel that wrestling’s nastiest wrestler has been “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt, there is very few that would argue that the hardest working wrestling is none other than Mark Sterling but what about the biggest and most feared wrestler today?

While no wrestler in the Midwest is more loved than the Mississippi Madman, he brings to the ring a softer side during his matches. In the past the name that was mentioned for feared was “The Future” Donovan Ruddick who currently resides in WWE’S developmental system with FCW under his new moniker DT Porter.

Ruddick standing at 6”9 was a machine that the fans in ST Louis loved to see weather or not he was in a good mood or heaven forbid the man was on a war path destroying opponents on a weekly basis.

With Ruddick’s absence who do we believe is heir to his throne of the Biggest and most feared wrestler in the wrestler in the Midwest?

At the top of any list one would have to say that is “Mean” Mason Beck. Beck a powerful man in the old of Ruddick towers over the competition. What makes Beck a front runner for this title is the fact of how much speed and stamina the man possess.

We have seen recently Mason Beck bully his way around the Midwest with power moves and wrestling combined.

Beck is a former partner of Ruddick as last year the two teamed up with manager MR Late Nite to beat the Madman and his partner former WWE STAR U-Gene at Pro Wrestling Epic ; the two looked to take over the Midwest before Ruddick’s signing of WWE.

While many wrestlers in the Midwest would like to see Beck get signed and move to Florida along with Ruddick, MWR Fans we highly recommend that you get to a show near you to see Mason Beck in action soon before that happens.

Let us look at a video package of why he is MWRS pick for Biggest and most feared wrestler today

Just a few weeks ago we were in Springfield Illinois for New Midwest Wrestling where Mason Beck took on fellow rising superstar Nick Brubaker in a phenomenal match. Brubaker by no means is a push over and went toe to toe with the big man but it was breathtaking at times seeing the power of Beck being demonstrated at times during the match on Brubaker.

Yet MWR may be wrong fans who else could be the man that puts fear in the Wrestlers heart?

In alphabetical order

Alexander Rudolph

Photobucket

Young and wild is words that come to mind for this Metro Pro Wrestling and NWA Dynamo star. Rudolph has been recently been seen around the Midwest more frequent the first part of the 2011 causing alarm for many young wrestlers. Led by manager Sadie Blaze winning has not seemed to be the objective as much as hurting people.

Brian Ash

Photobucket

Ash the current 3XWrestling Champion is intimating to say the least. He brings to the ring a ring presence of power and respect. He is the main reason that Genesis has had the edge over the fan favorites at 3XWrestling

Bull Schmitt
Photobucket

Schmitt is a former WLW Champion who knows how to wrestle but would rather cause trouble and hurt people like MPW Champion Derek Stone along with good friend Trevor Murdock. While Schmitt may seem fun lovin as he heads to the ring it is his roughneck ways in the ring that has his opponents running for cover.

The Dixieland Destroyer

Photobucket

Unpredictable and dangerous is what many have to say about the DixieLand Destroyer. You never know what you will get from the masked man. At times has shown a friendly side but when the bell rings he pushes his weight around in a ferocious manner. Referees and Security’s worse nightmare you never know if he truly understands the rules of the match.

Preston Maxwell

Photobucket

Maxwell was just a name on a card in the past at Pro Wrestling Phoenix but when he targeted the Big Hurt Abu Colossus last summer in a brutal feud he put the wrestling world in notice that he would no longer be forgotten. After winning the first stage of his feud he is now the PWP Champion with Abu once again knocking on his door.

Ron Powers

Photobucket

Powers has been feared for many years and age has not slowed down this monster. It looked as if time had soften the big man as he was cheered in 2010m but after feeling slighted with the love that CWC Champion Danny Boy Hawkins was receiving he went postal. MMWA-SICW promoter Herb Simmons has had to employ extra security to contain the rage of Powers during the shows in East Carondelet. Powers would win the CWC title this past March from Danny Boy with no looks of slowing down anytime soon.

Dubi meets the MMWA-SICW fans February 2011

Posted by flairwhoooooo on February 27, 2011

By Dubray Tallman

Hello everyone, an exciting night for me personally as our good friend promoter Herb Simmons asked for me to present Danny Boy Hawkins with a trophy. The trophy was in honor of his accomplishment of winning the Classic Wrestling Champion tournament last month at the very same building by defeating Waco, The Big Texan and followed it up with a win in the finals over “Thee” Brandon Espinosa.

I was nervous as this was to be aired on Channel 8 in St Louis so I didn’t want to mess up and make Danny Boy look bad. In all I was happy with the way it turned out as things was going great until Ron Powers went off his rocker and attacked his good friend Danny Boy.

You can find out the details by clicking here.

The MWR wrestler of the night was one of our favorite young men in the game today high flying A big thank you to Ace Hawkins for throwing out an MWR shirt prior to overcoming the odds and defeating the much bigger Waco during the night.

After his match Ace came out to meet the fan Gavin who was from Waterloo Illinois there in the front row with his family.

Danny Boy had a huge fan base at MMWA-SICW and prior to his good friend Ron Powers stabbed him in the back several of the fans took the chance to get their picture taken with the champ.

Photobucket

First we had Donovan who was at the matches for the very first time!

Photobucket

Dominic’s dad was a special guest for the show and had remembered us at WLW in 2010 when Brian had covered them. It was great meeting them and Dominic was so excited about having his photo while holding the belt with the Champ.

Photobucket

Christian, Kayla, Paige, and Allison was up next , this was Allison’s second time coming and she just loves Danny Boy so I was happy to get the two together along with Allison’s friends.

Photobucket

Brett & Eli Gummersheimer had their photo taken with Dave Vaughn last time but the photo did not turn out so this time they got to pose with “The Icon” Chris Hargas.

Photobucket

Last but not least I was going to pick a wrestler, when I saw that Brian was speaking to Jaysin Static questioning his actions in the ring earlier in the night against his opponent Max Archer when I got my good friend Mike Van to capture the young star putting the MWR Owner in a headlock.

I would like to thank MMWA-SICW for their friendship and support of myself and MWR as we get to meet such wonderful fans while checking out some great wrestling action.

Till next time.

Love Dubz
