Today’s wrestlers aren’t afraid of being paralyzed, the long term effects of steroids or a half a dozen other reasonable things to be afraid of. The most terrifying thing for a pro wrestler in this era is the number 30. Or more specifically the age 30. The general consensus is that once you’ve hit the magic number, you’ve missed the boat. You may get good opportunities to work good shows but a dream of being a WWE contracted wrestler is over. Is this fact or merely a bitter fiction that has made its bed in our world.
I did some heavy research for this article. I asked the question of several veterans who use to work the territories. Were they afraid of 30 or some other magical number? it wasn’t that they were afraid of 30 but aware of it. If someone hadn’t become a star or had gotten a good as they were going to by the time they hit 30 they usually started making alternative plans for the future. The big difference between then and now is that it was their decision. Plus with several profitable companies and bookers, if one promoter didn’t see anything in you, whose to say the next one wouldn’t.
When Vince started offering contracts to guys like to build a national WWF. He didn’t hire guys 18-20 years old. He hired guys that were seasoned, guys that he knew he could be in relativly any situation and they could perform because this wouldn’t be their first rodeo. And it made for a great product, were from top to bottom you had genuine workers. Guys that were working together to make money. Now everyone wasn’t a Randy Savage or Ricky Steamboat but everyone played their role perfectly.
Now it isn’t to say that WWE has never and will never hire someone over the age of 30. Because they have, most notably guys like The Boogyman and Rico, who were in their late 30s even 40s when hired. The ratio to twenty-somethings vs thirty-plus is a one sided margin for sure. So what is “being in your prime” in pro wrestling now?
Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker
You look at Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker, two guys in their 40s who went and had probably the greatest match in Wrestlemania History. Neither man could have had that match when they were 25. Because they hadn’t had the 1000s of matches prior to learn from.
I personally know for a fact that if WWE would have hired me when I was 20 years old, I would have screwed it up in some way. Because I was stupid like all 20 year olds. Its like any sport, you draft someone directly out of high school and you have to deal with a maturing process. You draft a college senior and 4 year starter then, for the most part, you take that maturing process out of the equation. I personally would rather hire someone who is a great worker at 33, that could work for 10 more years than someone who is gonna be just “ok” for 20. But I promise I don’t know everything.

Thank you for taking the time to join me with a new Dubi meets the fans, where today we are at Pro Wrestling Epic for the very first edition of Dubi meets the Fans at PWE.
This night promised to be special because one of MWR’S rising stars the PWE US Champion “Irresistible Brandon Aarrons was set to face the current Ring of Honor World Champion Tyler Black. Aarons has won the hearts of fans in St Louis but it would be interesting to see how this match up would go. In the near future Brian will have a photo recap of this historic match up as well as the rest of night of wrestling action from Mt Pulaski Illinois.
This was also the night were we debuted the Tyler Black MWR Trading Card, and we presented Tyler Black with a MWR Top Draw courtesy of MWR Artist Dartallian Allen.
To start the night Brian introduced me to the Nose Bleed Seats MOAV5706 and Chris Lee who had brought his son to the show and I caught up with the famous Crime Fighter. To find out more info on our friends at the NBS checked out their site here.

Meanwhile I was on the hunt to find some people for this edition of Dubi meets the fans. I was thrilled to meet an energetic group of fans from Lincoln Illinois with one stating that they try to go to all the local shows. We talked about wrestling and they said nationally they like John Cena but on this night they were excited to meet Tyler Black. After Tyler got done visiting with some fans he was kind enough to join us for a picture. Danny, Richard, Greg, Mike , Jerry and Scott all had the chance to get their picture taken with the hottest wrestler today Tyler Black.
The next group of fans that I met was uncertain who they wanted to chose for the night but stated that they would let me know at Intermission. Krotch had open the night in exciting fashion with a win against MR. Late Nite’s protégé Graves. Karma would come back to bite Graves as the week prior he, “The Perfect Weapon” Morbid and MR Late Nite turned on Cabal leaving him brutally laying in the ring after they lost to Mephisto and Justin Wade. This night Mr. Late Nite would show his true colors when he turned on Graves before the match ended. The ace in the whole for this weasel of a manager was he had just paid for the services of one of the Midwest most powerful man in the Midwest “The Future” Donovan Ruddick.
With the exciting win Krotch once again was chosen for the Dubi meets the fans picture, making him one of the most requested wrestlers in the Midwest for this feature, wheather it is at 3XW, MECW or PWE the fans can not get enough Krotch…. Wait Did I just say that? Melissa, Charles Mariah, Kristin and Tommy all posed with Krotch.

Ruddick would make an impact later in the night when he turned on his friend The Mississippi Madman. The Madman had a cast on his hand due to an injury and was not expecting the assault by Ruddick. The Madman promised to get revenge when he heals up.
Ruddick and his manager Mr. Late Nite would not be done when Ruddick challenged Jimmy Karryt for the HWC Championship. Brian is a big fan of this rising star and had asked if he would do the honors of wearing a MWR Shirt to the ring prior to his match. In a hysterical moment of the night Brian was attempting to take a picture of Karryt coming to the ring and was backing up where he nearly went head over heels on a bunch of chairs that got the laugh of the night from the crowd. That’s my boyfriend. Karryt threw the MWR Shirt to young Paula Merrell and though he lost the title and was bruised and battered he still took the time to pose with his fan.

Unfortunately Ruddick and Mr. Late Nite would not be denied as they would go home with the HWC Title in my personal opinion of the match of the night. I look forward to a rematch between these two in the near future no pun intended.
I had to decide on whom my pick for the Dubi meets the Fans photo and who would be better than the PWE US Champion Brandon Aarons prior to the biggest match in his career.

I won’t lie the trip was long but we had a great time while having a lot of fun. The wrestling was very good and PWE announced that evening that they would be returning to Lincoln Illinois Balloon Festival on August 28th. We went last year and had a great time watching wrestling outside while the Balloon liftoff was going on. If you missed it check out Brian’s Photo Recap of that show here and mark your calendar for this date.
Springfield Illinois we will be coming to your town when MWR comes to New Midwest Wrestling for the very first time on July 10th. Look for Dubi meets the NMW fans!!
I look forward to seeing you there.
Tyler Black, Brian Kelley and the 3XW Champion Jeremy Wyatt
Last month on June 4th in Des Moines Iowa, we were on hand to present the 3XW ChampionJeremy Wyatt and Tyler Cook the 2009 MWR Match of the Year plaque for their match last July 17th for the 3XW Pure Championship title . Tyler Cook would have his hand raised on that evening in a match that is still talked about today.
Since that time Jeremy Wyatt made that loss the pivotal point of his career when he bounced back to defeat “Delicious” Devin Carter for the 3XW Heavyweight title. Wyatt recently broke the record for the longest 3XW Champion and has had thrilling matches with Al Snow. Maddog McDowell, Tyler Black and an incredible series with fan Favorite Rory Fox.
Tyler Cook on the other hand has floundered and looking to regroup after losing the very next month against the unstoppable Kraig Kessaman who as of press time has not been pinned at 3XW since August of 2008…Yes I said August of 2008! We are huge fans of Tyler Cook here at MWR and feel that it wont be long till he is back in the title hunt again soon.
Midnight Guthrie and Brian Kelley talks about the MWR Award during intermission.
While we were there we got to see a rematch of Wyatt vs. Cook only this time Wyatt was the 3XW Champion. Wyatt would prove once again that he is among the top in the sport today by submitting him to a crossface.
A old foe in Rory Fox would come Rory Fox came out and officially announced he would be using his Gauntlet for the Gold title shot against Wyatt at the 3XW 5 Year Anniversary Event this Friday Wyatt said “fine, but I choose the stipulation. It’s going to be a ladder match!!!
Can Fox finally get the win for this coveted title or will Wyatt continue to be the one man that has his number?
Before we take the time to watch the 3XWrestling commercial I would like to thank 3XW, Jeremy Wyatt and Tyler Cook for their time last month during that important evening as we honored Wyatt and Cook with the 2009 MWR Match of the Year.
We would like to congratulate MWR readers Pete Sakaris from Nebraska and Brandon Brown from Missouri for answering the “Who’s the Superstar in the picture contest”.
The First question was who in the picture is the son of a former WWE Hall of Famer?
That none other was the son of WWE Hall of Famer Ted Dibiase, Mike Dibiase. Mike’s Brother Ted is currently a WWE Superstar.
Brandon will receive an autograph 8×10 of Mike’s dad Ted Dibiase.
Ted Dibiase
Before Ted became a household name he put himself up against some of the best in the world right here in the Midwest. Dibiase would capture the NWA Missouri Championship twice in ST Louis, Mo.
Dibiase defeated Dick Slater on August 12, 1977 and would earn his second reign on November 21, 1981 against Ken Patera.
Dibiase would go onto to be one of the most hated/loved wrestlers in this generation as the Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase. Pro Wrestling Illustrated would name Ted Dibiase #32 in 2003 in the PWI Years.
The current NWA Missouri Champion is Davey Vega who defeated Dingo in Glen Carbon Illinois last year on October 16th.
The second question was who was the former NWA Central States Champion in this photo?
Pete answered correctly when he named Derek Stone who was on the top nailing Mike Dibiase with the ten punch. Derek Stone became the NWA Central States Champion by defeating Michael Barry, Griz and Gary Jackson in Coffeyville, KS on November 16. 2002
Fun fact: both Mike Dibiase SR and his son Ted would also rein as two time NWA Central States Champion. Mike Sr defeated the Spoiler and The Viking while the future Million Dollar Man pinned Bob Slaughter and “Bulldog “Bob Brown.
The current NWA Central States Champion is the 2009 Missouri Wrestling Revival Wrestler of the Year Mark Sterling. Sterling defeated Michael Strider to become the NWA Central States Champion in 2009.
Pete will be receiving the must have collectable the Mark Sterling MWR Trading Card , which is number two in the set that celebrates the hard working men and women in the Midwest wrestling today.
This picture was taken at CSW in Lawrence Kansas in a three way match between Derek Stone, Mike Dibiase and Mason Hunter. Special thanks goes out to my friend Retro Rick for having information up about this show so I could find some information about it.
