Hall of Fame announcer Mickey Garagiola passes away.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 30, 2010

Missouri Wrestling Revival is sad to report that Mickey Garagiola has passed away at the age of 89. Garagiola was a strong supporter of Pro Wrestling and is loved and remembered as a co announcer with his friend Larry Matysik for THE wrestling show around the world “Wrestling at the Chase” program.

Garagiola had kept close ties with his fans throughout the years attending wrestling events as recently as June with friends Matysik, Herb Simmons, Tony Costa at MMWA-SICW in East Carondelet Illinois.

In 2007 he was inducted in to the ST Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.

He will be remembered for his generosity and respect for the fine people of ST Louis.

From the MWR family, Mickey thank you for the memories.

I leave you with words from his friend Herb Simmons

We have lost yet another great member of our wrestling family. .

Mickey was one that could make you laugh when you were down, and he was one that truly loved what the guys in the ring did. I remember him telling me several times that some of the best parts of his life were sitting next to Larry Matysik helping with the shows and walking down the ramp at the Kiel to a sell out crowd.

He had stories that you didn’t care if you heard them over and over. He had memories of all the greats, Bruiser, O’Connor, Funks, Brisco’s, Murdoch and the list went on. I must say he always told me that his all time favorite was “Big Thunder”, Gene Kiniski. Now he and Thunder are together looking down upon us.

He always told me how it was an honor for him to work with Larry. He would tell people, “That guy Matysik is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to knowing where the wrestlers were or what they were doing”. His Son John has been a regular at South Broadway and has traveled over to East Carondelet when I would have Mickey over for a show.

Mickey’s Brother Joe was my first guest on KZQZ 1430am thanks to Mickey and Larry. Joe was the first play by play announcer on Wrestling at the Chase when it started in 1959. He and Mickey both shared a love for the business. He always kept you entertained and even now that he is gone, we will always remember what part he played in the Wrestling business.

RIP my friend.

MMWA-SICW Open Door tryouts rundown from Patrick Brandmeyer with photos from Mike Van Hoogstraat.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 29, 2010

Editors Note: Last week MMWA-SICW open their doors literly to all aspiring wrestlers to have the chance to work with the 2009 MWR Promotion of the Year.

MMWA-SICW has five shows in the works for September and in 2010 fans have had the pleasure to see Donovan Ruddick, Brandon Espinosa, Ace Hawkins, Mark Sterling and most recently Mephisto make their way to the promotion.

I am sad to say that I was unable to attend due to prior commitments but I knew that MWR fans would have a great look into the happenings of this historic event thanks to Pro Wrestling expert Patrick Brandmeyer being able to attend as well as MWR Photographer Mike Van Hoogstraat.

I now give you Patrick and Mike with the rundown on the Open door tryouts.

Which one of these aspiring wrestlers and personalities will make a mark in the future at MMWA-SICW?(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

I’ve been fortunate to get fairly close to the local wrestling scene…case in point, being invited by Tim Miller to the MMWA-SICW tryout in East Carondelet this past Thursday. Saw several familiar faces in attendance as well as some Broadway trainees and some out-of-towners.

Some of the familiar faces for MWR fans and new one lined up to speak to Keith Smith, Tim Miller and Jim Harris (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

The main Broadway representatives were Tim himself, Keith Smith, and referee Jim Harris. They laid out what Broadway has to offer: Exposure in a great wrestling market in front of good audiences, as well as T.V. time(via their local-access program) and a decent payday. Broadway is stepping up their schedule in a major way in September, so the roster will be expanding in the near future…September has the usual shows at South Broadway and East Carondelet as well as their debut in Hillsdale, MO and a return to Fairmont City. The injured A.J. Williams was also in attendance as well as Ace Hawkins.

They had one interviewer/commentator tryout named Ben Simon who did a fine job and will apparently be at their East Carondelet show this weekend.

Blake Steel is one of the best promo men in the sport today, it was no surprise that he was dead on in showing his skills.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Ben Simon was impressive in his effort to win a spot as a professional announcer, here he gets words from Ian Storm (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Keith asked why I didn’t try out for that spot…and I didn’t really have a good answer for him. Haven’t gotten behind that particular microphone since the GCW days and wouldn’t mind doing it again sometime!

Those in attendance got a chance to prove themselves behind a microphone and also in the ring. The trainees practiced in the ring with Johnny Courageous while those with more experience under their belt had full-fledged matches with the likes of Courageous, Brandon Espinosa, and Sean Vincent.

Former MMWA-SICW manager The Magic Man is always entertaining and I have him hoping for his return to the promotion for some time now. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

The Magic Man was in the house and did a classic promo to kick things off…

Was good to see former GCW competitor Ian Storm in the house as well as Springfield IL’s Blake Steel.

Former GCW wrestler Ian Storm gets the upperhand on one of the Midwest top Wrestlers Brandon Espinosa while Ref Eric Davis looks on. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Not so fast Storm, what you dish out the talented Espinosa will give you that and more. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Is Eric Allen the best wrestler in Illinois? That is what he will tell you.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Sean Vincent catches Allen and lets him know about it. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Could moments like this lead to a big feud at MMWA-SICW in the future? My money is on the fact that Steel will not forget Espinosa actions during the tryout.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Also saw a couple of guys who have flown under the local radar to some extent, Kurt Styles and Rick Stone. One of the more decorated local grapplers was in the house as Eric Allen sought to add another notch to his resume.

A group from Jefferson City arrived later in the tryout…some did better than others.
Espinosa was quick to let one of them know about an early mistake in their practice matchup.

New faces try their hand at the very difficult skill of wrestling.(Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

Critiques followed each matchup in the hopes that each wrestler would learn and work to improve. Vincent had a good short sprint with one of the Jeff City upstarts who went by “Bill Murray”(no relation).

Keith Smith and Herb Simmons have seen it all in their many years in the business, they watch the proceedings with a close eye for future talent. (Photo credit Mike Van Hoogstraat)

I’m always open to a learning experience and I feel like I’ve learned more in the past few years of wrestling viewing than at any other time in my nineteen(!) years of following the industry. I have all the respect in the world for anyone who steps in a wrestling ring because I couldn’t do what they do. I don’t think lack of in-ring experience disqualifies a person completely from having an opinion about wrestling…though I suppose I would respect the opinion of a wrestler over a non-wrestler.

Look for recaps from both of the shows that MMWA-SICW had in August in the near future at MWR.

World League Wrestling comes to Sedan Kansas September 25th

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 28, 2010

MWR fans it has just been announced that World League Wrestling will be teaming up with the Chautaugua County Scouts to bring to Sedan Kansas a night of wrestling for all ages.

WLW has on tap a triple main event!

In the main event it will be a rematch between two of the best in the sport today. The WLW Champion Trevor Murdock defending his title against Trent Stone. Will fan witness  history in Sedan Kansas as Stone become a 2-time champion?

Many experts feel that the top tag team in 2010 makes their home at WLW and are currently the WLW Tag Team Champions. “Superstar” Steve Fender and Mark Sterling bring to the ring the total package of wrestling skills, experience along with a devastating attack that has left challengers down and out when they are through with them.

Brian Breaker and the Cancun Kid will look to utilize their youth, speed and power to overcome the wily veterans. Breaker a former WLW Champion is very capable of taking over a match with his brute strength, while the Cancun Kid has been impressive since his debut at WLW.

In a night of rematches can the former WLW Ladies champion Lucy Mendez take back the title from the women who defeated her for the title, Amy Hennig? Hennig has been on a tear and has been building momentum all year long.

The Amy Hennig that Lucy lost the title is not the Amy that is the current WLW Ladies Champion. She has improved her skills and has more confidence which makes her all that more dangerous.

Be the first to check out the WLW debut the newest graduate of the Harley Race Wrestling Academy, Jeff Lagee.

Also in action will be Ryan Drago, Ethan Wright, and Jack Gamble.

The special guest will be the former 8-time NWA World Champion Harley Race.

Join WLW for a night the way wrestling was meant to be at the SHS Jr. High School, and the show starts at 7 PM.

A look at the first half of 2010 at AAPW

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 28, 2010

Before AAPW took a break for the summer, let’s take a look back at what has transpired the first half of the year.

As the year began, Edmund “Livewire” McGuire was the AAPW Heavyweight Champion. The fans had chosen McGuire to receive a shot at the title at the Fan’s Choice event in January. Since McGuire was now champion, the honor went to the first runner up, the 450 lb. Mississippi Madman, another fan favorite. In his first title defense, McGuire lost the title to Madman at Fan’s choice thanks to interference from special guest referee and McGuire’s “friend”, “Serial Thriller” Shane Rich. Madman would successfully defend the title in West Frankfort, IL. against “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt one month later. Wyatt and his partner, Mark Sterling, brutally attacked Madman after the match. Wyatt was granted a rematch in April in Herrin, IL. However, a kink would be thrown into this match as Shane Rich returned a few days early from his suspenpension! Rich had been suspended in January for his actions at Fan’s Choice. Rich was able to get himself into the main event making it a 3 way. Rich miraculously came out victorious. Edmund “Livewire” McGuire was awarded the first shot at Rich. Fans were stunned as Rich defeated McGuire clean in the middle of the ring at Rent One Park on May 22nd!

This leaves the question as to who is next in line for Rich’s AAPW title. With all that has transpired between Rich and McGuire, it does not appear McGuire will just let it go. However, with Rich’s convincing defeat of McGuire, McGuire will have to earn a number 1 contender’s spot. Former Champions, Shawn Shultz and Mississippi Madman have yet to receive rematches and Jeremy Wyatt also feels that current Champion, Rich, never beat him.

In the tag team picture, Rage seemed to have a secure hold on the tag titles. The Submission Squad fought the champs to a no contest in January, which certainly shows they are worthy of another opportunity. However, Rage lost the belts to Ax Allwardt and his new tag partner “Homicidal” Steven Davis on May 22nd. Mike Masters also retired at the end of that match. What tag team will step up to take on the new champions? The Money Makin’ Jam Boys? The Submission Squad? Will The Hooligans return to AAPW? Or will a new team emerge?

So far in 2010, AAPW has continued to treat our fans with big name stars in wrestling. Simon Dean has made 2 appearances, Andy Douglas, Paul Burchill, Kevin Thorn, and Jerry “The King” Lawler have all wrestled on AAPW events.

Other AAPW stars to keep an eye on include:

Bad Boy” Chris Thomas– Thomas, after a series of matches with Edmund “Livewire” McGuire, seemed to have come out on top by earning a victory in a vicious street fight. This is a huge knot in his belt and should surely catapolt him into the rankings.

Heath Hatton– Hatton, like many rookies, struggled throughout the first half of the year but earned his first victory in Herrin in April followed up by being the victor of a championship battle royal in Mascoutah just weeks later! Is this a fluke or is Hatton the real deal? We will see when Hatton cashes in on his golden opportunity.

“Thee” Brandon Espinosa– Espinosa has rarely lost in an AAPW ring. Why he hasn’t received more opportunity is anyone’s guess but he has certainly proven he has what it takes.

“The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt and Mark Sterling – These two almost caused a riot in West Frankfort, IL. earlier this year and had to have a police escort from the building to protect them from angry fans. Together, they could be strong contenders for the AAPW tag titles and individually both are serious threats to the heavyweight title.

G.T. Vega, Matt Cage, Sean Vincent, The Hooligans – All made appearances with strong showings in AAPW this year. Will any of them return?

AAPW returns this fall!

MWR Trading card #19 Eric Allen

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 27, 2010

Eric Allen (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

Missouri Wrestling Revival would like to welcome Eric Allen to our trading card set, as he takes the #19 card.

Eric Allen has been a mainstay of the Midwest wrestling scene for quite some time. While he may not be very popular with the fans, his success is hard to argue. In the summer of 2009, Allen held the heavily disputed “Peoria Pride” championship. Many fans felt that he just created the belt and never actually won it. After he dropped the championship, he proved to his critics that he could win a legit championship when he picked up both the MECW Heavyweight title and the IHW Illinois State title in 2010. As this article is being written, he still currently holds both of those championships.

The “Pride of Peoria” has developed a reputation for being very underhanded and cowardly in the ring. Referees usually don’t see what Allen is up to, but the fans sure do. Many may ask how he can be as successful as he is, with all of his character flaws? That’s easy. What Eric Allen lacks in moral fiber and sportsmanship, he makes up for with brains. He has used his high level of intelligence to trick opponents countless times into sealing their own fate.

This very distinguised gentleman’s unique in-ring style and success have garnered him his very own card. Pick yours up today and come see Eric Allen as he will be appearing at both IHW and MECW shows this year.
