Blood Tables and Chairs “The Story of an independent Wrestler” Book Review

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 27, 2010

By Brian Kelley

I just purchased the brand new book by Dennis T McHawes called Blood, Tables and Chairs and must admit that I could not put the book down. McHawes wrestled as one of the favorite Indy stars of the Midwest in the 90’s going by the name of the DRILL INSTRUCTOR.

I had the chance to see him wrestle several times in Boonville, Missouri with his tag team partner Johnny Jett for a promotion that I cannot recall and recall him becoming an important member of Harley Race’s World League Wrestling.
The books first words are ….. “ST Louis – The Checkerdome – 1982” and young Dennis is attending his very first wrestling match. He is excited and makes no qualms about it. McHawes does not deny that he was a fan of wrestling and because of that you find yourself cheering him on. The Drill Instructor would debut at the historic South Broadway Athletic club and Dennis goes into detail about how he went about getting his foot in the door.

Throughout the book, MWR readers will recognize some of the names that he worked with. The Magic Man, Trevor Murdoch, Rick Ruby, Matt Murphy, Pete Madden, Derek Stone and Steve Fender are all included as McHawes lets us in on his ups and downs in his career. Readers will also learn that during his time with Harley Race, McHawes had the opportunity of working and partying with wrestling stars like Meng, Abdullah and even the great Harley Race himself.

He continues to share stories of Koko B Ware and former NHL Star Tony Twist, gives a true insight of how it felt to share a dream with tag team partner and friend Johnny Jett, only to have life move them in opposite directions. You’ll learn about his opinion concerning certain promoters and what kind of advice not to take from the Iron Sheik.

His trips to working for WWE marked the highlights of this book for me. He lets his guard down for the readers, who are therefore able to truly feel how much he and other wrestlers wanted to impress.
You will also not want to miss his reflection on his relationship with Race. Most of us never get to work so closely and become friends with one of the greats. In all walks of life, you have friendships that have highs and lows. In the end you can really get a feel for how thankful McHawes is towards the people who helped him.

For only $12.00, I highly recommend that you purchase this book You can purchase it at Amazon.com

Premier Insulation & Firestop Company sponsors Fathers Day weekend Double Main event in East Carondelet.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 12, 2010

MMWA-SICW returns to East Carondelet on Saturday June 19th to celebrate both Fathers Day and their 51 year anniversary of Wrestling at the Chase first aired in May of 1959. Last year they had the great Harley Race in attendance along with Gene Kiniski and Baron Von Raschke via telephone talking to the packed house.

This years event in sponsored by Premier & Firestop Company who is bringing to you two explosive main events worthy of the occasion. General Manager Sean Walsh will be on hand with all his union friends to cheer on Ron Powers as he and Danny Boy have an all out war against Gary Jackson and Waco. Premier Insulation & Firestop have purchased ads on the radio and local newspaper’s including the Labor Tribune inviting all their union brothers and sister to join them in East Carondelet on Saturday June 19th at 8pm. Sean grew up watching Wrestling at the chase and felt like he wanted to help support a local wrestling show that gives back to their community.

That’s not all, the MMWA-SICW Championship will be on the line when Dave Vaughn defends his title against Travis Cook’s protégé 6’9 235 lbs Donovan Ruddick. This is the match that we have all been waiting for. Can the champion withstand the power of Ruddick or will Vaughn’s wrestling ability be the edge in this battle between two of the best in the Midwest?

Also on hand will be the voice of Wrestling at the chase Larry Matysik and Mickey Garagolia to celebrate the occasion.

MWR fans bring your fathers and sons, heck bring the whole family for a fun filled evening.

MMWA-SICW at the community Center at 823 State Street

Dubi meets the WLW Fans at Richmond and Concordia Missouri

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 19, 2010

By Dubray Tallman

Dubray Tallman back with “Dubi meets the fans” and on this edition we have a double shot weekend with World League Wrestling from Richmond Missouri on April 23rd and April 24th from Concordia Missouri .

We arrived at WLW on Friday afternoon and Brian tried to be cheap and save money on a motel room by looking around town, but the locals stated that they wouldn’t recommend anything but Super 8. Brian was on vacation so he back down from going elsewhere. When we checked in, the price for a Jacuzzi room with the best bathroom heater they had, it was not much difference and with our AAA membership we got 10% off…. So I had something to look forward to after the matches’ yay.

When we got to the gym the place was buzzing as the small town of Richmond had come together to support young who was in need of a double lung transplant. A huge crowd was ready for wrestling and the place was filled with kids excited about the matches ahead.

WLW had some new faces since we last had the chance to see them but our good friend Dan Gier was still there as well as Johnny Gold who it seems has been on his best behavior since he has not been leading his stable the Gold Exchange at WLW. Brian was busy talking WLW with Bill Smith and I was on the hunt to find fans for Dubi meets the fans.

Amy Hennig and her Superfan Frankie H

I caught up with Amy Hennig’s Superfan Frankie H from Richmond who jumped at the chance to be a part of this and have his picture with Amy. Brian has always been on the excited side for Amy since the first time we had seen her in Slater, MO. Her father was a wrestler who he grew up with. Brian could not get over how much more improved she has become throughout the year.

Mason Mathews and Trent Stone

Who wouldn’t want their picture taken with the Champ? Mason Mathews would have to agree as he was all smiles when Trent Stone was kind enough to pose with him prior to his leather strap match with Trevor Murdoch.

Trevor Mathews and Trevor Murdoch

Speaking of Trevor’s, Trevor Murdoch would meet Masons brother  Trevor Mathews from Hardin Missouri. Murdoch and Mathews would have fun doing the Murdoch signal together for the picture.

Alexander family of Shawn, Cassie, Trevon and Jordon all took a family pose with the talented Murdoch

Trevor Murdoch was very popular throughout the night and Richmond’s Alexander family of Shawn, Cassie, Trevon and Jordon all took a family pose with the talented Murdoch.

Eathon Wright and Dubray Tallman

It was my chance to choose a wrestler for my picture with a WLW star. I watched Eathon Wright show a lot of heart in his match with Mark Sterling so he won me over for the night.

The next night we were at WLW in Concordia and while Brian was sweating thinking about what he was going to say in the Mark Sterling presentation for his award, I made my rounds for Dubi meets the WLW Fans in Concordia Missouri edition.

Trevor Murdoch , Eric and Jazlynn Camerrer (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

I first caught up with another fans of Trevor Murdoch in Eric and Jazlynn Camerrer from Concordia Missouri.

Megan Olinger ,Cancun Kid and Keith Garrison (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

Keith Garrison was taking his friend Megan Olinger to wrestling for the very first time. They stated they were happy with anyone so that we could choose. I was happy to see another young star from WLW come up to meet the fans when the speedy Cancun Kid came to pose with Keith and Megan. I hope that Megan enjoyed the show.

Jack Gamble and Standley Langkraehr

Standley Langkraehr has bought an 8×10 of another young wrestler and had chosen Jack Gamble to pose with him.

Johnny Gold and Dubray Tallman

I was on the fence on who I wanted my picture taken with on the evening and I decided that beings that Johnny Gold had changed his evil ways that he should be rewarded with a picture with yours truly Dubray Tallman

For real guys I would like to thank the fans as well as the wrestlers for being part of this edition of Dubi meets the fans.

Till then be good

Luv Dubz

MWR interview with WLW Ladies Champion Amy Hennig

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 6, 2010

Amy Hennig

Height: 5’5

Weight: 130

Hometown: Champlin, Minnesota

Trained by: Harley Race

Debut: March 26 2008

Finisher: Whatever it takes to get the win

Brian Kelley –I am with 3rd generation wrestler and current WLW Superstar Amy Hennig. Amy’s grandfather was Larry “The AX’ Hennig, her father AWA World Champion and WWE legend the late great “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig. I would like to thank you for taking the time to speak with us today.

While I was at the Dan Gable International Wrestling institute and Museum in 2006, your grandfather Larry was being inducted. It was heartwarming to see so many of the Hennig family so happy and supportive of each other. What advice has your grandfather given to you prior to your first match?

Amy Hennig -The Hennig family as a whole is all about respect and family pride. My Grandfather Larry Hennig was nothing but supportive of me leading up to my debut match. We had a conversation prior to the match which almost brought tears to both of our eyes. He told me to represent myself and my family name to the fullest and that it meant so much that I was carrying on the Hennig family legacy. He gave me a reassuring hug and told me simply to do as I was trained.

Brian Kelley -You have trained at Harley Race’s Wrestling Academy, describe a days training for a female in a male dominate sport.

Amy Hennig -Get knocked down, get right back up and always ask for more. I honestly feel very blessed to work with the guys. They hit me harder than any woman ever could; they’ve never taken it easy on me because they know I can handle it, that’s made me strong. In addition to that they’re all like my brothers and the respect we have for each other runs deep.

Brian Kelley -Was there ever a moment while taking bumps that you had second thoughts about being a wrestler?

Amy Hennig -Never. I’ve always been resilient. I’ve sustained my fair share of injuries and I’ve worked through them. For me it’s been a lot about not only being physically strong, but mentally tough. Regrets are nonexistent.

Brian Kelley -After stepping in the ring for the first time till now, what has surprised you most about being in an actual match?

Amy Hennig -My training has prepared me to handle myself when performing during a match. If there was a surprise at all, it was the energy I feel from the crowd. It is so powerful to see a group full of strangers get so emotionally invested in me pouring my heart and soul into what I do. The appreciation I have for this is beyond words.

Hennig showed she can take a punch from the "The Worlds Strongest Woman" (Becca Swanson) at WLW’S 10 year anniversary show. (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

Brian Kelley -On July 26 in Eldon Mo last year you wrestled your first match against WLW ladies Champion Stacey O’Brien. I am sure you will be asked this many times in your life, what were your memories of that match?

Amy Hennig -I definitely had my work cut out for me. I was only a few months into training. I just did as I was trained and performed at the highest level I could. It was a big accomplishment for me, a day I’ll never forget.

Amy Hennig shows just how nasty she can be in the ring by taunting Santana G’s tag team partners Eathon Wright and Ryan Drago. (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

Brian Kelley -What is your favorite thing about being pro wrestler?

Amy Hennig -Wrestling for Harley Race, the majority of the shows we do are for some sort of charity. This is something that is very important to me. Anything I can do to give back to the fans or someone in need means the world to me. Also, the pride I feel for my family. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of my father Curt Hennig. Although he can’t be with me physically, he’s very much in my heart and with me in spirit. I know for a fact he’s proud of what I do.

Champions unite…WLW Tag Team Champion Mark Sterling, WLW Ladies Champion Amy Hennig and Sterlings partner “Superstar” Steve Fender. (Photo Credit Brian Kelley)

Brian Kelley -What would you like me to say to the wrestling fans?

Amy Hennig -I want people to know that I have paid a lot of dues and made a lot of sacrifices. I don’t feel the need to go on and on in this interview, trying to prove myself or put myself over to everyone. I want my work to speak for it’s self. I believe in myself and I love what I do.

Amy I wish you the best in your future endeavors and want to thank you for taking the time to sit and talk with MWR.
