MWR Rankings Review

Posted by Admin on December 28, 2008

With the 2008 season of the Wrestling Revival Cup done and champions crowned, the end of the year brings the preliminary MWR 2009 Wrestling Revival Cup rankings!  The beginning of the season has witnessed the downturn in the economy, but the Midwest has responded by putting great wrestlers to work in front of loyal fans.  The turnouts at shows in November and December were strong, and many companies have reported that they are doing well financially at this point in time.  Take from this what you like, but it is my belief that the talent in the Midwest is stronger than it has been for a very long time, and promoters are realizing that they can take their time to put together great shows.

In the singles division there has been a lot of movement to start off the new season.  MWR started the 2009 season by giving a preliminary top 75.  Rounding out the rankings is Donnie Peppercricketat number 75.  Peppercricket’s profile in Iowa seems to be growing in 3XWrestling and Pro Wrestling Phoenix.  With a feud on the horizon with long time tag team partner Joey Daniels for PWP, look for Peppercricket’s name to be more recognizable to Midwest pro wrestling fans.

Dinn T Mooreis another man who is benefiting from exposure in Iowa.  He comes in at number 67 after making impressive appearances in Iowa.  Time will tell whether his tag team partnership with Brian Breaker as World League Wrestling Tag Team Champions will slow his progression in the singles rankings, but the fact still remains that he is an intimidating man in the ring with plenty of skill.  He could be the heavyweight champion in WLW or any other promotion, for that matter.

The New Midwest Wrestling Heavyweight Champion successfully defended his title over a top ranked opponent in Mississippi Madman recently.  Benz, coming in at number 48, has a lot going for him as he continues his climb up the MWR rankings.  NMW seems to be staying active over the holiday season when other promotions are not as busy,  and Benz could definitely reap the benefits of that exposure.  If I were to make a prediction about Benz, I would say that by mid-year he will easily be ranked in the top 20.  Maybe even closing in on the top ten.

At number 44, Jerry Lynn‘s star in the Midwest seems to be dimming.  It wasn’t that long ago that he finally dropped the All American Wrestling Heavyweight Title to Tyler Black.  If he continues to stay inactive, his rankings could suffer in the MWR coverage area.  That takes nothing away from his ability, however.  When competing, Lynn is always a serious threat to his opponent.

For the 2008 Wrestling Revival Cup, Silas Younghad one of the most impressive win-loss records.  Although primarily competing for All American Wrestling in the Chicago area, Young could become a force in Southern Illinois and the St. Louis area if given the chance.  Currently ranked number 31, his year could depend on how well he does in his quest to become All American Wrestling Heavyweight Champion.

Right above Young at number 29 is my pick for 2009 Wrestling Revival Cup sleep, Kraig Keesaman.  Keesaman continues to grow more charismatic by the day, and his wins are slowly beginning to pass his losses.  As the dust settles in 3XWrestling championship scene and the newly christened NWA: Dynamo Pro promotion, Keesaman could emerge a force to be reckoned with.  I’d say the odds are in his favor.

Brandon Espinosa is the master of diversification.  If the man was a stock broker, he’d be on par with World Wrestling Entertainment’s John Bradshaw Layfield.  At number 26, Espinosa is active in numerous promotions throughout the MWR coverage area, picking up wins in many of them over the course of the last couple of months.  The question is whether he’ll take a shot at Lethal Wrestling Alliance Heavyweight Champion and MWR’s 2008 Wrestling Revival Cup Champion “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyattor give High Voltage Wrestling Heavyweight Champion and current number 2 in the MWR rankings “The Future” Donovan Ruddick a run for his money.  He is in line for shots at both, and could skyrocket to the top of the rankings with decisive victories over both at the beginning of this year.

As the New Breed Wrestling Alliance and Heritage Wrestling Coalition’s Heavyweight Champion, “Bloody” Harker Dirge is poised to make 2009 his year.  Dirge is ranked 17th in the preliminary rankings, and I don’t believe anyone doubts his ability to make it to the top ten by Spring.  An outside booking for another promotion or a high profile win in NBWA could be all it takes.

For my money, the biggest chance for rankings shake up is the January 3, 2008 MWR Midwest Best Series Match pitting 2008’s Wrestling Revival Cup Champion and current number one Jeremy Wyattagainst 2008’s MWR 100 number one, Tyler Blackunder the LWA banner.  Wyatt finished the year as the top wrestler in the MWR coverage area and is a favorite to win a second time with his current number one ranking.  Black is a national wrestling star and possibly the next top level Midwest wrestler to make it to TNA or WWE.  A win or a loss could spell major changes for both talented wrestlers, which could create a ripple effect in the MWR rankings.

Keep watching the rankings and giving your feedback!

New Breed Wrestling Alliance- December 6th, 7 WWE Stars

Saturday December 6th in Rantoul IL, New Breed Wrestling Alliance delivers and early Christmas presents for Pro Wrestling fans when they bring 7 former WWE Stars. The show starts at 2:00 P.M. and tickets are only $10.00.

Here is a brief rundown of the 7 former WWE Stars with the lineup for a night you wont forget.

 Jake Roberts

Jake “The Snake” Roberts is considered one of the most talented promo guys in the sport. He is the inventor of one of the most influential moves in wrestling history, the DDT.  His classic feuds with Ricky Steamboat and Rick Rude are still talked about today. Jake often brings in a live snake to the ring which he would put on top of his opponents after knocking them out with the DDT to win the match. One of the most discussed wrestlers in the past 3 decades; you do not want to miss Jake “The Snake “Roberts.

Cowboy Bob Orton

The Father of Randy Orton, Cowboy Bob Orton’s legacy in the sport has been cemented with the honor of being named a member of the WWE Hall of Fame. Nicknamed Ace by Roddy Piper, Bob Orton was Pipers body guard when WWE took over the world in the 80’s. Bob always wore a cast on his left forearm claiming he was healing from an injury during a 1985 battle with Jimmy Snuka, but opponents would have to watch out because Cowboy would in turn use the cast as weapon.

Honky Tonk Man

The Honky Tonk Man is one of the most charismatic wrestlers ever to grace the sport. He has headlined major WWE arenas with around the country. The Honky Tonk Man will be the first to tell you that he is “The greatest Intercontinental Champion of All Time”. Defeated Ricky the Dragon Steamboat on June 2, 1987 and did not relinquish the title until 454 days later to the Ultimate Warrior.  The Honky Tonk Man thrills the fans with singing his unforgettable entrance theme, “Cool, Cocky, Bad,”.

Pat Tanaka

Pat Tanaka has thrilled fans around the world in organizations such as AWA. NWA, New Japan and WWE. One half of the tag team The Orient Express with Akio Sato, who was managed by Mr. Fuji. Matches with the Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty) thrilled fans high profile, high flying match at the 1991 Royal Rumble. The Orient Express were ranked in the PWI 100 Tag teams during the “PWI years”

Danny Basham

Danny is one half of the 2 time WWE Tag Team Champions with Doug Basham. Trained by Jim Cornett and Danny Davis at Ohio Valley Wrestling. He has the perfect balance of speed and power to overwhelm his opponents. This is your chance to see Danny before he is called back to the WWE or TNA

Rosey

Rosey is a member of the famous Samoan family, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson being one of his cousins. When the wrestler Hurricane “discovered” Rosey’s potential as a superhero, he christened him “Rosey, the Super Hero in Training”.  The two would go on and win the WWE Tag Team Championship together. Since leaving WWE, Rosey has kept busy around the world.

Tracy Smothers

The Wild Eyed Southern Boy Tracy Smothers, is one to never back down from a fight.  Tracy can get under wrestlers and fans skins alike with his actions and words. Tracy has been in WWE, WCW and ECW in his illustrious career.  He is one of the most traveled wrestlers in the sport today.

Moondog Cujo

One of the famous Moondog’s. The Moondogs were known for wrestling in blue jeans, sporting shaggy blond hair and beards and carrying animal bones around with them (which they would chew on and use as weapons) Cujo would be honored with the Professional Wrestling Illustrated 1993 Feud of the year in 1993 when they thrilled fans with their matches with Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett.

MWR October 2008 Awards

Posted by flairwhoooooo on November 18, 2008

October Wrestler of the Month

 wyatt

Jeremy Wyatt [ PWP] [LWA] [3XW]

No wrestler in the Midwest is as hot as Jeremy “The Rebel” Wyatt. On October 17th at 3XW he earned the right to be the number one contender to the 3xw Pure Championship title held by Tyler Cook by defeating former Pure Champion Maddog McDowell and international star Arik Cannon.

A week later he returned to LWA where he cashed in his Medallion to LWA President Luke Roberts before Roberts could declare the LWA title strip the injured Jordan Lacey of the belt. Since Lacey could not defend the belt, Roberts had no other choice but to give the Rebel the title. Wyatt never one to walk away from a fight successfully defended the belt that night in another three way, this time with KC Karrington and once again Arik Cannon.

Less than 24 hours, Wyatt made his way to Pro Wrestling Phoenix to take on the mammoth Abu Colossus for the PWP Championship. Wyatt was able to defeat one of the most impressive big men in the Midwest to become the new PWP Champion. It is only fitting that Jeremy Wyatt wins once again in October.

1st Runner Up – Casanova [3XW]
2nd Runner Up –
“Bloody” Harker Dirge [NBWA]
3rd Runner Up –
Shane Rich [AAPW]

northstar-express1

The Northstar Express (Ryan Cruz and Darin Corbin) [PWP] [AAW] [LWA]

The Northstar Express traveled to LWA for a classic match up between Johnny Vinyl & Davey Vega. The upstart tag team of Vinyl and Vega was able to get the upset win. The Northstar Express did not let that get them down as they headed to PWP and took on one of the arch rivals the LONRS for the Tag team titles. The LONRS had beaten the Northstar Express twice before this encounter so with their final chance to become the PWP Tag Team Champions, in a match up between two of the top tag teams in the Midwest, the Northstar Express was able to get the belts that have eluded them all year.

1st Runner Up – The LONRS (Mark Sterling and Darrien Sanders [AAPW] [PWP]
2nd Runner Up –
Johnny Vinyl & Davey Vega [LWA]
3rd Runner Up

October Women of the Month

Amy Henning [WLW]

Not content in just being the daughter of Curt “Mr Perfect” Henning, Amy has worked hard at WLW. The first match ups between her and Stacey O’Brien was the classic wily veteran taking advantage of young rookie. On October 24th in Warsaw Missouri, Amy proved that she is a quick learner and defeated O’Brien to become the new WLW Ladies Champion. MWR staff took notice and voted her the October Women of the Month

1st Runner Up –Stacey O’ Brien  [WLW]
2nd Runner Up – Malia Hosaka [3XW]
3rd Runner Up –Melanie Cruise [POWW]

October Promotion of the Month

high-voltage

High Voltage Wrestling

Many doubted the new promotion in St Louis capable of having a show much less being successful. HVW on October 4th welcomed fans and wrestlers alike to come and see what they were all about.  The night showcased powerhouses Donovan Ruddick, High flyers DaCobra, a top tag team in the Hybirds and a ACU-30 Title defense.  HVW delivered a rollercoaster of action and suspense that impressed the wrestling world.

High Voltage Wrestling understands that they can not fly under the radar. They have reloaded for their next show. They will crown the first HVW Champion when “The Future” Donovan Ruddick takes on Brandon Espinosa. Mark Sterling will battle DaCobra and Kahagas has been brought in to take on MWR Wrestler of the Month Jeremy Wyatt. This and much more is why HVW has earned the respect of MWR.

On October 25th, the LONRS (Mark Sterling and Darrien Sanders) looked to have their number once again. The Northstar Express Ryan Cruz and Darin Corbin) would not give up.
