The Ringside Edition December 2016 – December 2016 – By Brian Thompson

Posted by flairwhoooooo on December 27, 2016

nwl

Sometimes no matter how long you have been doing something, you always find your way back to your initial beginnings. My personal pro wrestling journey started around 1998 or 1999, creating my own wrestling website (anyone remember Angelfire URLs?) and covering independent wrestling in the southeast Missouri part of the country. Think of it as a poor man’s version of Missouri Wrestling Revival, which has obviously taken things to a totally different level. Long story short, I reached out to Brian Kelley about returning to my pro wrestling columnist days and those humble beginnings nearly two decades later. Wow. Just typing two decades later makes me realize I am not getting any younger!

For the debut of this column, I want to broach a subject that is on the minds of most people involved in the wrestling community in the Midwest – the National Wrasslin League (NWL). Regardless of what anyone might think, they are creating a buzz and a buzz is what you want when trying to establish a new venture.

I think Michael Elgin penned a great viewpoint on Twitter recently about NWL. I encourage you to seek that out if you haven’t already seen it. Now onto my thoughts.

First, I think management of the organization needs to be commended. Promoting pro wrestling is a huge risk at any level you try it. Trust me. This is coming from experience from being involved in different ventures since I first began my career in 2000 as a ring announcer for Gateway Championship Wrestling in St. Louis. Almost 17 years later, I feel I have learned a lot – as much from failures as from successes. When a person takes his or her own money and puts in on the line, whether you believe in the concept or possibilities, the person at least deserves some respect.

Contracts are being offered to talent. They are getting the chance to develop new gimmicks or characters. I have no direct idea of what these contracts entail, but I know many of the athletes and competitors who will be a part of the NWL venture on both sides – St. Louis and Kansas City. I hope to see the organization succeed if for no other reason than to support the dreams and goals of these talents.

Will the regional concept work? I’ve often told people that if I had significant finances to make a “real run” that a regional concept is the way I would go. I’d hope to build up a company that could get a stronghold in whatever part of the country it existed in. Think regional concept with a national footprint. With all the streaming media and online options today, a company can truly put its product out beyond its touring borders in ways never possible before. And as far as actual TV, I’d try to work a deal with maybe a Fox Sports affiliate. I saw Pro Wrestling Ohio with a show on a regional sports network there called Sports Time Ohio several years back. With my Dish Network package, I even got their show. I always thought that was a very good marketing strategy.

I think in trying to make a big splash, the regional footprint is a smart way to go. Time will only tell if this idea, concept and venture works. I hope it does for several reasons. First and foremost is the previously mentioned talents that will be earning a more regular income from wrestling. That is a goal for most of us in the wrestling business in one way or another.

Second, the more successful this is there is the strong possibility of a trickledown effect. For the talents who will be able to work other shows, they would become more valuable for themselves in terms of talent fees as well as more marketable to the promoters who use them. A win-win for everyone.

Will this be easy? Not at all. But guess what? No business is “easy.” If they were we’d all own our own business. It takes time. It takes investment. It takes patience.

As far as management, I think the ones who I understand are involved with NWL bring a mixture of skillsets to the table. Chris Gough obviously has been a part of the biggest wrestling/sports entertainment company in the world and has seen how they operate. He’s also had success with his own independent promotion in the Kansas City Metro. I believe Pierre Abernathy is involved in the St. Louis arm of things. He’s had experience running shows in that metro which only helps the cause. And I’m actually excited to see what Scott Bowden brings to the table. I was a fan of his work during the Memphis days with the United States Wrestling Association (USWA). Being a part of the last surviving territory system can only have helped his knowledge of how to promote and support a wrestling venture. He was on live television for years and saw how that worked. And not live to tape, we can edit later, I mean LIVE as in WMC TV-5 in Memphis with no re-takes.

As we enter 2017, I saw good luck to NWL and good luck to all independent promotions around the area. I hope for a most prosperous year for everyone.

NWL to Present First Live Wrestling Events in KC, St. Louis in January, Supported by Major Ad Campaign

Posted by flairwhoooooo on December 21, 2016

15589713_1197341656979828_8828133501012598856_n

Startup pro wrestling company NWL, LLC recently launched “Wrasslin’ With Character,” a multi-platform marketing campaign introducing some of the larger-than-life personalities who will be appearing at the League’s inaugural NWL KC and NWL STL events in January.

Seven NWL stars, including “The Mile High Magnum” Dak Draper, 6-foot-6-inch survivalist Jack Foster, former NFL lockdown corner Ray Briggs, and wine connoisseur Niles Plonk, are featured in a series of indoor ads at bars and restaurants throughout both cities as well as at the Scottrade Center for all St. Louis Blues home games this season.

The Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts of NWL Corp, NWL KC and NWL STL are adding videos and photos daily that provide more in-depth looks at each grappler featured in the campaign.

The colorful character posters are complemented by humorous radio spots appearing in steady rotation on Kansas City stations 610 Sports, 810 WHB, Talk 980, 96.5 the Buzz, 98.9 the Rock and 101 the Fox, all designed to drive ticket sales to the NWL KC’s first show ever on Jan. 7 at the Scottish Rite Temple at 1330 Linwood Blvd.

NWL STL’s version of the “Wrasslin’ with Character” spots are now airing in St. Louis on 105.7 the Point, KSHE 95, and 92.3 WIL. NWL STL has also reached a deal with FM NewsTalk 97.1’s popular hosts Dave Glover and Tony Colombo to promote and recap the group’s wrestling events held every other Thursday night at the Casa Loma Ballroom, beginning with its Jan. 12 debut.

Featuring the “voices” of some of wrestling’s greatest legends, the spots are geared primarily at men 32–52 who used to enjoy pro wrestling in the ’80s and ’90s before the product became stale; however, the NWL’s modern, edgier presentation is also suitable for families.

“The campaign harkens back to the glory years of KC and St. Louis wrestling, when outrageous performers like Dick the Bruiser, King Kong Brody, Dick Murdoch and Bulldog Bob Brown thrilled fans throughout the territory with their unique brand of mayhem and storytelling,” says Major Baisden, League president. “This creative campaign is our way of letting fans know that the wrasslin’ they used to love is back, with exciting new characters that will deliver edgy, storyline-driven entertainment every other week in their town.”

In October, NWL KC announced a partnership with the Scottish Rite Temple, located at Linwood and Paseo in midtown Kansas City to present a full slate of live events every other Saturday night in 2017. Rival promotion NWL STL then revealed plans to run shows at the Casa Loma every other Thursday night in the heart of the Cherokee Street/Antique Row Business District in South St. Louis. Tickets for NWL KC and NWL STL events are now on sale through the TicketFly mobile app at fightkc.ticketfly.com and fightstl.ticketfly.com.

“KC and St. Louis remain the best cities for professional wrestling in the country, and the NWL is proud to make our debut in these two fantastic venues that will provide an intimate, rowdy experience our fans will enjoy,” Baisden says. “Featuring a mix of the best homegrown Midwest talent and some of the hottest free agents in the country who have signed and moved to the area, the League expects NWL KC and NWL STL to thrive and fuel the flame of an already intense rivalry between the two cities.”

Baisden, a KC-based entrepreneur who sold his last startup, Iris Data Services, Inc. for $134 million in spring 2015, also announced that both promotions have finalized deals to complete their entire initial rosters, who will occasionally square off against each other and eventually compete for the League championship—and city bragging rights—at the company’s end-of-season spectacular in December.

Recent notable NWL KC signings include “The Monarch” Jeremy Wyatt, Thor Theriot, the Swoll Patrol, and Lakota Red Cloud. In addition to the high-profile NWL STL signings announced last week for Dez Wellston and Maverick, the promotion has also inked deals with local sensations Gary Jay, who will compete as Jay Lutz, and Davey Gibson and Matthew Grundy , formerly known as Davey Vega and Mat Fitchett, who will appear in tag-team competition as “The Blood Brothers.” Other recent NWL STL signees include “SuperSoul” Coco Rumble, Cornell Douglas and Emmett DuBois, “The Billion-Dollar Brother.

Nothing beats a combination of fruitiness and acidity, according to wine connoisseur Niles Plonk. Inside the ring, Plonk claims to pride himself on a clean finish, too, but that’s open to grape debate. Don’t miss the uncorking of Plonk’s NWL KC career on Jan. 7 at the Scottish Rite Temple. “Dirdey” Jake Dirden to defend the PGP Franchise Title for the Final Time

Win…Lose… or Draw….The only 2 time and longest reigning Franchise champion in PGP history will put the belt on the line for the final time in the Proving Ground on December 17th at MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET….. The NWL has signed Jake ( Jack Foster in NWL) to an exclusive contract starting in January of 2017. We at Proving Ground Pro feel that they made a wise decision and wish a huge success in the future for both the NWL and Jack Foster (Jake Dirden). It all comes down to this, Jake Dirden retires as champion or passes the torch to “BuckNasty” Bucky Collins, either way you’ll be witness to Proving Ground Pro history in the making at MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET.

December 17th history is made at the Lawford Theater (225 W Main Street, Havana, IL) with MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET … Doors open at 6:30 PM and the MIRACLE starts at 7 PM. $12 adults and $7 kids or save a couple bucks with $10 adult and $5 kids advance tickets are available in Havana (at Grandpa’s Diner) and Petersburg (at Huebner Tire or Styles & More). If you can’t get to an advance ticket outlet message us on social media (Proving Ground Pro on Facebook and @pgpwrestling on Twitter) and we’ll get you hooked up.

Tag Team Title Match Signed For MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET

December 17th sees the return of PGP Tag Team champions Alpha Class (Danny Adams and Paco Gonzalez) to the Lawford Theater (225 W Main Street, Havana, IL) for another title defense. The astounding rise of Alpha Class has become the stuff of legend in the Proving Ground showing just how high you can climb with talent, hard work and determination. Speaking of legends, once upon a time the amazing Krotch pulled off perhaps the most improbable victory in PGP history by defeating the massive Nate Redwing and earning a shot at the PGP Tag Team Titles. It took a while and the titles have changed hands since Krotch started his search….But Krotch has contacted us and will cash in with Dante Leon as his partner versus Alpha Class at MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET. This will be high octane offense and sizzling speed on display in this potential show stealing match up that needs to be seen by you…Yeah, YOU…..BE THERE!!!

Stephen Wolf vs Timmy Lou Retton To Decide Buckley Entrant at MIRACLE

December 17th (Saturday) will be a classic night in the Proving Ground when MIRACLE ON MAIN STREET presents this mind blowing Buckley Memorial Tournament qualifying match…”Leader of the Pack” Stephen Wolf damn near beat Jake Dirden for the Franchise title at our last show, although he came up short Wolf once again showed he’s ready for prime time. Timmy Lou Retton is a star on the rise with one of the most entertaining styles of wrestling you can find. Blending a dynamic high flying gymnastic based assault with impressive mat skills has forced both fans and opponents to take notice of the impressive Retton. Timmy has collected hardware and found his way to several main events already in his career, now he’s looking to put a Buckley Tournament entry on his resume as well. If you’re a fan of independent wrestling “Dream Matches” then Stephen Wolf versus Timmy Lou Retton is an early Merry Christmas present because you can’t wrap awesomeness….Oxygen masks and flight suits may be mandatory for this match….SONIC BOOM!!!

Plus so much more.

For big deal moments in independent professional wrestling… ENTER THE PROVING GROUND!!!

Free NWL #FightSTL shirts, stickers, and more for the first fans through the door at St. Louis Anarchy’s awesome show.

-The show started with promoter Pierre Abernathy addressing the fans and acknowledging the fact that it was the final show for St. Louis Anarchy. He brought out National Wrestling League promoter Major Baisden; he got a mixed reaction, but he spoke to the fans about his vision for the NWL and seemed to have them on board.

The Hooligans(Devin & Mason Cutter)(w/ Uncle Leo) d. The Viking War Party(“American Viking” Alexandre Rudolph & “Littlest Viking” Jake Parnell); the match broke down into a bar fight with the four sitting in chairs and punching each other. It finally came down to Devin simply pummeling Parnell to the mat and pinning him (15:53).

“Dad Bod” Sean Orleans won a four-corner match with Cody Krash, Ken Lee, & Chris Crunk when he pinned Crunk after hitting a double Stone Cold Stunner on Crunk & Lee (6:03).

Kevin Lee Davidson d. Mike Outlaw after a Regal Roll off the second rope followed by the spinebuster (10:01).

-Cause members Evan Gelistico & Danny Adams brought out Everett Connors, who seemed to have amicably split from the group…however, tempers flared and Connors chased them from the ring.

slanovll-349

-“Gorgeous” Jordan Lacey d. “The Incredible Primal Prodigy” Matt Kenway (Look At Him) after the Jenna Jameson(swinging uranagi) (2:02). Gelistico & Adams attacked Lacey after the match, but the returning Adam Caster and Frankie Big Balls made the save! Caster addressed the fact that he had bought into Gelistico’s “bull$#!+”, but he had to retire from wrestling due to concussions and had cleared his head.

slanovll-362

He introduced Frankie Big Balls as well as several personalities from SLA’s predecessor, the Lethal Wrestling Alliance: Jordan Taylor(former LWA President), Tim Pickerill(who did a lot of behind-the-scenes work for the LWA), and Mad Dog Daffronian(LWA ring announcer).

Vega delivered his brainbuster onto the knee on Gary Jay, then hit the move on Fitchett as well and pinned the champion for the win (17:02)! Vega barely had time to celebrate his win as several competitors from the Kansas City side of the NWL attacked all three competitors; I saw Logan & Sterling Riegel), Jake & Ryan King, Kiyoshi Shizuka, and even Michael Strider!
