The Golden Circle “Peanut Butter and Jelly” by Greg Anthony

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 7, 2009

Straight fromrasslinriotonline.com

No, this isn’t an article on how I, “The Golden Boy” Greg Anthony, make the greatest PB&J sandwiches. Instead an analogy pertaining to pro wrestling. Now bear with me on this one. I think it would be safe to say that Peanut Butter and Jelly is probably one the greatest combinations in the history of man. Perfectly complimenting each other so much that now it’s impossible to imagine one without the other. So let’s say that Pro Wrestling is Peanut Butter or Pro Wresting=Peanut Butter for you math geeks. What would be Jelly in this equation? Well the solution is simple, Music!

Can you imagine the last thirty years of pro wrestling without music? No glass breaking for a “Stone Cold” Steve Austin entrance, no unmistakable guitar riffs, no spine rattling drums. Great moments that no longer exist because there wasn’t a soundtrack for that moment. Music is truly a universal language and has made its impact on every form of entertainment and pro wrestling is no different.

Now we all know that Michael Hayes is credited with being the first to use rock music in his entrances. From Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird” to one of my all time favorites “Badstreet USA” ,where Mr.Hayes sang lead vocals, his impact on the business in this aspect is legendary. Now look how far we’ve come with music in pro wrestling. WWE alone has released 22 albums that have done very well commercially.

Now P.S. Hayes wasn’t the first to come out to music in general and I don’t know if anyone really knows who the first actually was. I remember my grandmother telling me that Gorgeous George use to come out to “Pomp and Circumstance” or the graduation theme as you may know it. Of course it will always be Macho Man’s music to me. At the request of Vince McMahon Sr, Sgt. Slaughter used The Marine Corps’ Hymn in the late 80s. Music has had as much of impact on wrestling as anything else.

In 2009, music and wrestling are a given. I’ve had to work shows were the sound equipment breaks or the guy who owns the speakers quit the company. Now to enter without music, it seems like something is missing not just to me but the fans as well. It’s like….. like eating a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich without the jelly, I promise and when “The Golden Boy” Greg Anthony makes a promise it’s as good as gold.

—-Greg Anthony is a regular on the local area circuit. He won RRO Booker of the Year 2008 and is listed in the top 5 of the RRO Top 10 2008. Greg is currently working as booker of NEW and can be seen tagging with legend Bobby Eaton and Brian Thompson as “Midnight Gold”.

Look for more of The Golden Circle with Greg Anthony at MWR in the future.

Dubi Meets the LWA Superfans

Posted by flairwhoooooo on August 6, 2009

By Dubi-“Bear”

If you like beer, brats and wrestling then you should have come with me to House Springs on July 25, as I partied with the LWA Superfans.

Throughout the years of going to shows around the Midwest with my boyfriend, Brian, we have made many friends, no matter what federation we go to. One of my favorite friends goes by Big Al. Big Al is a huge Jordan Lacey fan and a loveable guy with a great sense of humor. He invited us to the LWA tailgate party prior to the show. And, as they say in Rock, let the good times roll.

The afternoon was beautiful and the beer was good. Several of the LWA crew joined us for laughs and food. The wild and crazy Steven Kennedy came out of the locker room and had stolen someone’s wrestling shorts and put them over his pants to entertain the party. I had a delicious jalapeño brat and got caught up with what was happening with Referees Eric Davis and Kiwi Jello. Even Adam Raw couldn’t resist coming out and hanging with us. Before we went in to watch matches, we all posed for a group photo for Kari Williams for an article to be published at a later date.

When the show began, I was already feeling a buzz and excited about seeing Michael Strider again. Strider and Derek Stone were the first two wrestlers who I became a fan of when I first saw pro wrestling live. On this evening, Strider took on Mark Sterling, who was also one of the first I saw, whom, at the time, I was not impressed with. Nearly five years later, Sterling is now one of the top reasons I enjoy going to wrestling.

Also on the card was the sexy Tyler Cook. Girls, if you have not seen Tyler Cook, you do not know what you are missing. He is a work of art, or, at least eye-candy.

I got to my seat with a full cup of beer to start the show. The problem was I kept spilling my beer on the floor, with a little help from my friends, on myself, and on others throughout the night. At intermission, I was on my mission to seek out LWA fans to do this article. Due to the fact that I was having such a good time, I asked my friend Dawn to assist me in finding fans of the LWA.

The first fan I caught up with was with my good friend Big Al; her name was Mallory Willson, a seven year fan. She insisted that her all-time favorite was Bruce VanChan who retired about four years ago and was “one of the originals from Adam Raw’s garage,” according to Willson. That was before my time of watching LWA, and she wanted her picture with fellow Superfan Justin Poole.

The next fan I spoke to came to see Adam Raw in action. His name was Ryan Hughes, and he has been going to LWA for close to two years. Adam Raw, unfortunately, was unable to wrestle on this evening, though he was more than happy to take a picture with young Ryan.

Running around, I found Adrian Hooper, who had been going to LWA for four years. Adrian was a fan of Steven Kennedy. Kennedy used to be cocky and arrogant, but lately he has been a really cool guy, and I was happy he took the time for me to snap a picture with Adrian.

Last, but not least, was Michael Mayberry. Michael and I have something in common—we are both impressed with Donovan Ruddick. You can call him “The Future” or the “6’9” Monster,” but I think that he is AWESOME. So did Michael. The intermission was done. and I asked Michael that if he waited after the show, I would asked LWA Management if Ruddick would come out. You never know what kind of mood The Future is in, so I told Michael I wasn’t for sure. Lucky for me, they were able to get him to come out, and Ruddick was polite and smiled.

Aww the night was over and the room was spinning but we had a great time of hanging with friends at the Lethal Wrestling Alliance.

I am hoping to make  the MMWA-SICW show Saturday at South Broadway. On Aug. 15 I will be in Granite City for High Voltage Wrestling. Look forward to the next installment of Dubi meets the fans.

One last thought…..
Michael Strider lost the NWA Central States Championship to Mark Sterling and announced that he was walking away but the fans will always have the memories of one of the toughest guys I ever saw. I leave you with a picture of him posing with me and another fan who truly enjoyed watching him. I have to say it one last time….STRIDER NATION…you will be missed.

LWA July 25 Arena Report

Posted by reimaginejournalism on August 3, 2009

By Kari Williams

In House Springs, MO, 77 fans witnessed the fallout of Circus Maximus VI. Complete with title changes, dissension amongst teammates and the always-vocal Superfans, the show delivered in true LWA fashion.

Gary the Nightowl, with Tiffani LaFane, took on Tyler Cook in the opening bout. The new ring announcer, Graham Wellington, incorrectly announced Gary as ‘Barnowl,’ prompting LaFane to make a point that the barnowl no longer existed and that the fans need to accept it. Cook seemed to have the advantage early on, but LaFane’s ringside antics derailed Cook on more than one occasion.

However, the match went to the outside, as Cook put a beating on Gary prior to LaFane’s fatal involvement. Just when it appeared that Cook would close in on the victory, LaFane jumped on the ring apron and sprayed Cook with the hairspray she carried to ringside without detection by the referee. Gary quickly pinned Cook for the win.

Paul Parker then brought out Adam Raw to denounce the rumors that he was scheduled to face Gorgeous Jordan, formerly Jordan Lacey. Raw also commended Commissioner Tim Alley for initiating the Triple Medallion and said he found a replacement for the rumored match. Before he could introduce the replacement, the Submission Squad (Pierre Abernathy & Evan Gelistico) interrupted, complaining about Raw’s constant need of replacements within the LWA.

Raw then brought out “Future” Donovan Ruddick as his stand-in. Ruddick attacked the Squad and then turned on Raw. When Ruddick proceeded to further attack Raw, Abernathy stopped him, causing a minor conflict between Abernathy and Gelistico, who were set to defend their tag titles against de La Mascaras (Dash Rando & Rebelucha).

When the match began, Rando got the best of Abernathy, who suggested that they thumb wrestle instead—he never loses in thumb wrestling matches. Rando won. Then Abernathy suggested an arm wrestling match, which gave the same outcome. Rando was singled out for the majority of the bout, but the moment he saw a window of opportunity, he tagged Rebelucha, who turned the match around.

Rebelucha’s uncanny lucha skills impressed nearly everyone in attendance, and just about wrestled the tag belts from the Squad. Gelistico and Abernathy got in their share of formidable offense, and in the end, their cunning ways allowed them to walk away with the belts. Gelistico pinned Rando but held the tights for leverage.

Gorgeous Jordan defended his Pinfall Medallion against Ruddick in the next bout. These two men had not waged war against one another since their First Blood match on Sept. 20, 2008, in which Ruddick lost the title to Lacey. And Ruddick’s pent up anger showed. He pummeled Jordan relentlessly. But the Gorgeous one would not go down easily.

He put up a fight, albeit using illegal tactics more often than not. Their battled went in and out of the ring, and Lacey went to the top rope twice for elbow drops. However, when he could not put Ruddick down for the count, he intentionally got himself disqualified via a low blow, thus retaining his medallion.

After intermission, LWA Heavyweight Champion K.C. Karrington addressed the crowd and his match against Wyatt later in the evening, where he vowed to retain the belt. Before Karrington could get much further, LWA President Luke Roberts interrupted, proclaiming that he had a plan to make the LWA the best since he won the presidency. He also noted the fact that Shorty Biggs tried to go against him and that he was “taken care of.” Roberts called Wyatt the most dominant and profitable champion in LWA history and declared that the “reign of K.C. Karrington is over.”

“Thee” Brandon Espinosa, accompanied by “Irresistably Flawless” Brandon Aarons, challenged Medallion of Brutality Holder “Spoiled” Steven Kennedy. Due to the medallion stipulations, Kennedy had the power to choose the type of match in which he would defend the medallion—he chose a tables match. It did not take long for chairs and tables to enter into the equation.

Espinosa took a brutal beating courtesy of Kennedy’s chair-bashing expertise. Still, Espinosa did considerable damage to Kennedy’s ankle, also using a chair. At one point, the two men were teetering on the ring apron with a table set up right beneath them. Finally the table made its way to the ring, and after a couple close calls for both challenger and medallion holder, Kennedy retained, sending Espinosa smashing through the table with a crushing powerbomb.

National Wrestling Alliance—Central States (NWA-CS) Champion Michael Strider made his highly anticipated return to LWA to defend his belt against Mark Sterling. These two hard-hitting athletes dished out equally vicious amounts of punishment. And both refused to back down. They took the fight out of the ring, where Strider delivered his most vicious chops to Sterling’s back, but Strider paid dearly, as Sterling rammed him into the side of the ring.

Back in the ring, Sterling continued his malicious attack, which resulted in the referee being knocked down. Strider would have had the victory after hitting a devastating suplex, but the ref was slow to make the count. Just minutes later, Sterling pinned Strider, clean, in the middle of the ring, to win the NWA-CS Championship.

After the match, Strider said that he did not know if he would make it back to St. Louis—his favorite city to wrestle in—and thanked the fans for their support.

In the main event, Wyatt attempted to win back the LWA Heavyweight Championship from K.C. Karrington. The tone was set for this war earlier in the evening, as vengeance echoed in the Knight of Columbus Hall. Karrington and Wyatt wasted no time in letting their hatred boil over, as they attacked each other relentlessly. Wyatt focused his attack on Karrington’s arm/hand to debilitate him. But nothing could stop the underdog champion. With frustration setting in, Wyatt resorted to bringing a chair into the mix, but the ref took it away.

Wyatt played on that distraction and hit Karrington with the belt. Just as the ref began to count the pinfall, Kennedy emerged from the back and explained what happened to the ref. Crafty as he is, Wyatt nearly regained the belt after Kennedy gave the ref an earful, but Karrington remained one step ahead of the former champ and got the one, two, three.

LWA’s next show will be Aug. 7 in St. Charles, MO at the Vetta Sports Complex. Keep checking http://www.missouriwrestlingrevival.com and http://www.lwawrestling.com for more details.

MMWA-SICW July 11 recap, part two

Posted by reimaginejournalism on August 2, 2009

By Kari Williams

As the second show of the night for the MMWA wrestlers, some of them pulled double duty to please the fans at South Broadway Athletic Club. Depsite the show starting late due to the earlier show in Dupo, the wrestlers delivered exactly what the fans wanted to see, with a few surprise returns mixed in.

Heavyweight Champion Gary Jackson and his arch-rival Shaft, with Travis Cook, clashed in the main event. Shaft took the coward’s way out on this exchange, attacking Jackson from behind to start the match. His dastardly antics continued, as Cook interfered, giving Shaft the distinct advantage.

The champion looked poised for victory, and the Connection must have sensed this, because Junior Heavyweight Champion Dave Vaughn ran into the ring and attacked Jackson while Cook distracted the referee. All hell broke loose, as Phil E. Blunt, Cook and Shaft assaulted Jackson.

Just when it looked like nobody would come to Jackson’s aid, Commissioner Keith Smith ran from the announcer’s table to do some damage. Even MMWA Promoter Tony Casta got in the mix, as he delivered an old school flying headscissors to Shaft.

Smith revealed that he has become a licensed wrestler in the state of Missouri, and showed The Connection, the papers to prove it.

Fan favorites Johnny Courageous and A.J. Williams put on, arguably, the best match of the night prior to the main event. Courageous tried to eliminate Williams’ key moves by viciously attacking both the arm and the leg.

Not one to be deterred, Williams fought with everything he had, even going so far as to attempt a moonsault within the first five minutes.

These two men took each other to the limit. Despite Courageous trying to remove the possibility of the superkick from Willilams’ arsenal, Williams continued to put Courageous to the test. The match ended in controversy, as both men had the other’s pinned to the mat.

Blade wrestled Vaughn, accompanied Travis Cook, in a non-title match. Blade controlled the better part of the bout, but that is not to say that Vaughn was overmatched. After Blade connected with an elbow drop from the top rope, Cook began to look worried.

Vaughn may have felt that his title could be in jeopardy in the future, if Blade were to win the match—and that lit a fire under Vaughn, who maintained the lead from the momet he connected with a belly to belly suplex.

However, the fans distracted Vaughn, if only for a moment, which almost caused Blade to get the quick win. Vaughn rapidly regained focus and defeated Blade with the spear in just under 10 minutes.

Destiny Diamond had the chance to make up for her shortcomings against Alexis in Dupo, as the two went at it again, with the belt on the line. Alexis started the match off with the early advantage, but Diamond quickly took over, using nearly every illegal tactic possible. From this point on, both women worked hard to either maintain or regain control. Alexis refused to let her belt slip away, and Diamond wanted nothing more than to finally earn the belt. Diamond pulled out a win in 7:21 with a tornado DDT. After the match, Alexis appeared to have injured her neck. She was helped to the locker room.

A battle royal took place, featuring Vaughn, Shaft, Williams, Blade, Courageous, Jaysin Static and Core. Bodies flew in every direction, and eliminations occurred at a rapid pace, with Core and Static simultaneously taking each other out, as was the same for Courageous and Williams. Shaft and Blade were eliminated next, respectively, leaving Vaughn as the sole winner.

Static and Core wrestled for the second time this night in the opening contest. Fans distracted Core from the get go, causing Static to try and steal a quick victory. In this back and forth battle, the two went in and out of the ring. In one of the pivotal moments, Static prepared to launch onto Core, who stood on the outside of the ring, but Core saw Static coming and got him caught up in the ropes. That one misstep by Static allowed Core to take the advantage. But Static’s resiliency forced him to continue, and he pinned Core, gaining retribution for his earlier loss.

MMWA-SICW July 11 recap, part one

Posted by reimaginejournalism on July 31, 2009

By Kari Williams

MMWA-SICW put on a free show for its fans at the Dupo Fairgrounds in Dupo, IL prior to the event at South Broadway Athletic Club later that evening. The show began later than expected due to a rain delay and had only five matches because of time restrictions, but still gave fans the entertainment they desired.

Heavyweight Champion Gary Jackson battled a formidable opponent in A.J. Williams, who appears to be looking for a Heavyweight Title reign in the near future. As two fan favorites, Williams and Jackson put on one of the best, most competitive matches of the night. Neither man appeared to gain a clear advantage, depsite their efforts. However, Williams did have Jackson on edge throughout the bout, which allowed Williams to gain mulitple near falls. Each time Williams tried to take control, Jackson used his pure athletic skill to put a stop to Williams. The champion soundly defeated Williams with the Texas Cloverleaf to retain his title after Williams delivered two consecutive elbow drops but could not capitalize.

Bobby D took on the Big Texan in a physical contest. Texan attacked D from the get go, and barely gave him a chance to get out of the box, so to speak. Nonetheless, the one miniscule opportunity D had, he took full advantage of, using any tactics he could. Nothing D did could stop the bigger man, and when Texan caught D with a double-underhook suplex, the end became clear. In nearly 10 and a half minutes, Texan caught D in on the second rope and chokeslammed him to the mat for the win.

Blade had his hands full against Connection Member Shaft, who, conspicuously, was not accompanied by Travis Cook. Using his dastardly ways, Shaft attacked Blade from behind to gain the unfair advantage. However, neither man controlled the match for an extended period. Shaft’s evil ways kept Blade at bay and gave the Connection’s newest member a distinct disadvantage. Just over 10 minutes into the one-sided affair, Shaft stole the victory with a roll up where he had the tights.

Women’s Champion Alexis defended her title against her archnemesis Destiny Diamond, who has tried for the last few months to win the title. Diamond’s skill increases each time she steps in the ring, and this bout was no exception, as she easily dominated the champion. Not using any flashy moves, Diamond controlled the match, but one false move sent Diamond to the wayside and allowed Alexis to take over. Alexis wore down Diamond in a short amount of time, then pinned her after a TKO to retain the belt.

In the opening contest, The Exciting Jaysin Static and Core went at it. With the crowd firmly behind Static, he had a pyschological lead going in. It seemed as though that also worked in Core’s favor, as it gave him more motivation to defeat Static. The two battled in and out of the ring, and Core did everything he could—legally and illegally—to ensure the outcome of the bout. At 8:47, Core had wounded the exciting one enough to get the pin.
