MWR Person of the Month – Patrick Brandmeyer

Posted by flairwhoooooo on December 13, 2013

 photo IMG_1504_zpsa0c736ca.jpg

Always the bad guy Travis Cook does not even grant a picture with his former partner on the mic at GCW.

The month of December is known for the time of giving, so it is only fitting that we honor a man that continues to give to pro wrestling in the Midwest, Patrick Brandmeyer. When we started MWR over 6 years there were many promoters, wrestlers and fans that felt that pro wrestling was about to be a long lost memory, especially with the success of another sport I enjoy UFC.

One of the men that has been important in support pro wrestling on the Independent level is Patrick Brandmeyer. Patrick went to his first independent show in 2000, and has been a wrestling historian ever since, as you can see him write the results of each match that take place on a piece a paper, and keeping fans informed through his blogged that is shared on the wrestling website St Louis Wrestling Community.

Let us take a look at a small list of the ways that Patrick has supported pro wrestling and some key facts on one of MWR’s closest friends.

1) First Independent show 2000 GCW at North County Tech High School in Florissant, MO, May 19, 2000. Main event was Pete Madden vs. Danny Boy. Show also had Makaze vs. Mike Sharona vs. Nikki Strychnin.

2) A year or two into going to GCW attendance that they asked about using his photos and for him writing stuff for the event programs and website.

3) Worked with Travis Cook do to commentary for two years One of the most notable matches he called was Cowboy Bob Orton vs. Dingo in Mt. Vernon. Plus a few Jerry Lynn matches.

4) Sends results from the shows he attends to Pro Wrestling Illustrated to let the country know of the hard work that promoters and wrestlers do to entertain the fans.

5) One of the Biggest fans of the late Gateway Championship Wrestling. Though the company is no longer any more, he continues to support the wrestlers that made it great, yet still gives the same amount of respect to the wrestlers that have come along ever since.

6) Brandmeyer is an aspiring comedian on the side after going to a few open-mics when Dan Walsh was going to the Funny Bone regularly, so he got it is his head that he wanted to try it. First time on stage was June 20th of 2006.Highlights have been the the paid gigs definitely as well as getting to host the weekend shows at the Comedy Forum and Comedy Etc, plus the road gig he did in Quincy, Illinois.

7) Patrick has been a columnist for MWR since the early stages of the site. Today he continues to contribute with articles on the site and for the upcoming 2013 MWR Yearbook.

8) SICW in EC on Saturday will make 46 shows that he attended for 2013.

The truth of the matter is that you can find hundreds, if not thousands of people that can give you information on WWE or spend money and time on that promotion, but there are very few people who are not wrestlers that are willing to take the time to cover the sport or use their talents to help out the foundation of pro wrestling for such a long time. I hate to say it but even at this stage of how easy it is to put something on the net, Patrick often has more information on his blog than many have on their own wrestling website.

I was able to ask Patrick his thoughts of being an important member of the wrestling community recently and he had this to say.

“It’s funny because I have trouble thinking of myself as any more than a fan. But at a time in my life when I didn’t have any sort of social life to speak of, these guys and gals put up with me hanging around the shows all the time.

They let me be a small part of a business that I’d been a fan of for a long time, and I’m grateful to them for that.

While I’m probably a “smart mark” in some sense, I do my best to remain a fan at heart. There have been plenty of times when cynicism got the better of me, though.

It happens. Any fan wants wrestling to be done his or her “way”. If you want wrestling to happen that way, you’d better get a promoter’s license.

A lot of indy wrestling is discovered through word of mouth. I went to broadcasting school with Ryan Ash and he told me about GCW; I don’t know if I would have started going to shows otherwise.

That’s why I make an effort to tell people about indy wrestling. There are another options besides the stuff on TV and sometimes people aren’t aware of them.

I always recommend indy wrestling to fans…it puts things in perspective since most wrestlers started on that level. It’s more “up close and personal” than a WWE show.

You see people on TV or at a distance in a big arena, they’re larger than life. You see them at an indy show and they’re people like any of us. I guess that’s one way to put it.”

Patrick plans on being in East Carondelet for SICW huge Christmas show, feel free to come up and say hi to one of pro wrestling’s biggest supporters.

If you would like to see Patrick Brandmeyer at the Funny Bone next Tuesday Funny Bone: 614 Westport Plaza Dr. in St. Louis(though it’s more like Maryland Heights). Open-mics are $5, with a two-drink minimum. Patrick wanted to let everyone know that there are “No guarantee I’ll make the list, there are usually a lot of people signing up and only so many slots to fill.”

On a personal level I would like to thank Patrick for his friendship to the MWR family, the support of pro wrestling in the Midwest as well his awesome contributions for the write ups

New Champions lead Proving Ground Pro into the new year:

Posted by flairwhoooooo on December 11, 2013

 photo D_zpse12ffff9.jpg

From Brady Lawrence

Proving Ground Pro‘s final event of 2013, Emergency Response, was a huge success and an absolutely wild night of action. New champions highlighted the best night of P.G.P.’s first year with a record crowd and hottest show to date!

 photo DDD_zps099db259.jpg

“America’s Favorite Son” Ruff Crossing is one of the few men today that has the package to match Jake Dirdens tenacity in the ring.

 photo DDDD_zps6ad434d2.jpg

Jake Dirden brings the pain to Crossing in route for the PWP Title. …Could these two men be heading towards a feud that could last for years?

With P.G.P.’s Franchise title vacant going into the evening, a one night, four man tournament was set to crown a new champion. The first round pairings were Ruff Crossing vs Tyson Dux and Jake Dirden vs TaDarius Thomas. “America’s Favorite Son” Ruff Crossing was able to move passed Canadian star”Textbook”Tyson Dux in a match that pushed Ruff to his limits.

 photo EE_zps74c371a6.jpg

“Textbook” Tyson Dux looked to take the “America’s Favorite Son” Ruff Crossing to school early on.

Dux’s scientific mat skills were almost too much for Ruff Crossing, but the big cowboy surprised Tyson with a roll up and moved on to the evenings main event. In the other first round match “Dirdey Jake Dirden overcame TaDarius Thomas in a classic battle of size versus speed.

 photo E_zps22e9bf24.jpg

TaDarius Thomas is a powerful man with a huge upside. Here he wisely tries to keep Dirden grounded.

TD showed the skills that made him P.G.P.’s first Franchise Champion by bringing his “A” game, putting Dirden in a tough spot on several occasions. In the end the size and power of the 6’10” bearded wild man proved too much for TD and “Dirdey” scored a pin off a huge driving choke slam, moving him on to the championship main event. The main event was then set, Ruff Crossing versus Jake Dirden for the P.G.P. Franchise Championship. This match had no time limit or disqualification, a winner must be decided. This stipulation resulted in Dirden calling Crossing out to the floor to start the match, this was a wild street fight from the opening bell. Spilling in and through the crowd from the get go, Crossing versus Dirden was and absolute old school classic that seemed to culminate in “Dirdey” Alabama slamming Ruff through an extremely stiff table. Somehow Crossing managed to kick out on the 2 and continue the match. Unable to get the 3 count Dirden appeared shocked and seemed to be taken out of his game, this allowed Crossing the opening he needed to hit Jake with a high impact lariat and score the pin. Congratulations to Ruff Crossing, new P.G.P. Franchise Champion.

Zero1 X World Champion Jonathan Gresham can fly and wrestle with the very best in the world.

 photo EEEEEEE_zpsfc29ee03.jpg

P.G.P. Cutting Edge Champion”The Apex” Blake Steel changes the tide with his power advantage.

In the surprise shake up of the evening, P.G.P. Cutting Edge Champion”The Apex” Blake Steel was taken to a 20 minute time limit draw with Zero1 X World Champion Jonathan Gresham. This was the proverbial wrestling clinic. Both men executed solid game plans, but neither could gain a submission or 3 count before the time limit expired. With the crowd wanting 5 more minutes, Gresham and Steel seemed ready to make that happen. Before the referee could call for a restart, Mario Andrew Crivello interrupted the proceedings and cashed in the Cutting Edge Golden Ticket he had won earlier in the evening. This forced Blake Steel into a second title defense against a rested and ready Crivello. After kicking out of several early pin attempts, “The Apex” began to get the best of Mario and seemed on the verge of winning, but a distracted ref left an opening for Crivello’s manager “Mouth of the Midwest” J.P. To throw powder in Steel’s eyes.

Proving Ground Pro Tag Team Champions The Hooligans (Devin and Mason Cutter) successfully defended their titles in a fast and furious match with The 2 Star Heroes(Chris Castro and Matt Knicks). This one had moves and high flying that defied description. A great showing by the 2 Star Heroes came up just short. Congratulations to The Hooligans on a big win.

Christmas bash with SICW Dec 14th Camera night plus Ken Kasa vs Jake Dirden, Ron Powers vs Flash Flanagan

Posted by flairwhoooooo on December 10, 2013

SICW

Ron Powers is on a mission, that mission is to repay Flash Flanagan for the brutal attack he did to him. Flanagan attacked Powers while Powers was challenging CWC title holder Ken Kasa. Flanagan lacerated Powers open and Promoter Herb Simmons fired Flanagan. However Powers would not hear of Simmons firing Flanagan. He begged Simmons to let him have another shot at Flash Flanagan on December 14th. Larry Matysik and Simmons agreed to Powers request, so on Saturday December 14th, Powers will attempt to get his evens with Flanagan.

Plus Champion Ken Kasa defends CWC title, a six man tag and other great matches.

Santa will be in the house and it will be camera night. Fans with a paid admission can bring the camera and get the picture with the Wrestler of their choice. (unless wrestler contract states otherwise)

The Young Bucks are coming to SLA in 2014!

Posted by flairwhoooooo on December 8, 2013

 photo generation-me2_zps05b170e2.jpg

The smoke hasn’t even settled at St Louis Anarchy’s Friday night huge 2013 Yuletide Terror and the Christmas gifts just keep on giving from the land of Anarchy. Two MAJOR matches are signed for March 1st GATEWAY TO ANARCHY super card

First you have the current SLA Champion Gerald James who will defend his title against the Gold Edition winner Kyle O’ Reilly!! He is using his title shot that night and of course it will be two out of three falls. These men met at 2012 Yuletide Terror in a match that O’Rielly won. O’Rielly won a classic this past Friday night by defeating one of the best in the country, Johnny Gargano by submission.

Does he have James’s number? Mark your calendar, get your tickets and be there on March 1st!

Yet, that is not all.

Making their very first debut at SLA  will be a tag team that many believe to be the most underrated tag team in world today, Matt and Nick Jackson, the Young Bucks. From Japan to the US with top companies like TNA , Chikara, Dragon Gate USA, and ROH they have brought fans to their feet with their electrifying moves.

 photo 0_zps9a1d3cb7.jpg

Throughout the past few years, wrestling fans and the Hooligans opponents such as Zero Gravity, have seen the Cutter Brothers with their hands raised at the end of the match. They will look to ground the Young Bucks at SLA in 2014.

SLA continues to deliver matches that fans have been demanding as the Young Bucks are set to meet Hooligans! Devin and Mason Cutter continue to build their reputation as true tag team excellence. On this night they will be put to the test as the Young Bucks will hope to use their speed to offset the tag team perfection of the Hooligans.

More info as it comes in and be sure to keep up with SLA on their very own facebook page.
