NWL: Explosion, Expansion and Opportunity at the Scottish Right Temple

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 26, 2017

Just like any business in it’s early stages NWL has had it’s share of ups and downs. Highs and lows and memorable and forgettable moments. Saturday night was undoubtedly one of those high/memorable moments. For starters because of the much anticipated confrontation between NWL_STL general manager Matt Jackson and owner and president Major Baisden. Secondly, because unexpected news about the growth and expansion of the NWL to cities outside Kansas City and the recently controversial St.Louis.

For those not familiar with the narrative allow your boy @_The_Knight_Owl to bring you up to speed. Roughly 6 months ago NWL began running shows at the Casa Loma Ballroom in what some would call a seedy part of St.Louis. Initially and especially at the first show the place was pretty well close to full and the excitement leading to the event was about as good and high as you could ask for.Unfortunately, that proved to be NWL_STL‘s short lived high point. Though the wrestling was on par or in some cases better then any other promotion in the area, something seemed to be missing but no one, not even yours truly who covers wrestling in this area could quite put there finger on it.

Folks would speculate that it was location, others would say it was the fact that the shows where on Thursday/Sunday vs the traditional Saturday night as must indie shows tend to run these days. Some would even say that the STL fans would never support something that originated in Kansas City. Those are just a few of the speculations that could be heard weekly on our podcast or just hanging outside waiting to get into a local wrestling show weather in KC or in STL. Well, about two weeks ago the speculation came to an end. Major Baisden held a press conference via Facebook live just days after making the surprise announcement again via FB (to the ir of many) that HE would never run a show in NWL_STL again! I’ll admit this was shocking but not surprising to those of us who have been following along closely.

In that press conference he confirmed most if not all the speculation and he even pulled back the curtain a bit by admitting that they were behind the 8-ball from the very start due to lack of an ideal venue and also due to what he referred to as a “toxic business environment in St.Louis” also adding that this wasn’t the first time that one of his business had failed/struggled in STL. During the press conference he was open, honest and answered all questions as you would expect a business owner that is as out in front as Major is. One notable viewer that day was the aforementioned GM of NWL_STL Matt Jackson, who seemed to be angry and disappointed at the fact that his guys found out about NWL_STL closing just like the fans via a FB post early Friday morning just over two weeks before. Jackson commented sporadically bringing Baisden’s commitment in making the STL branch of NWL work into question and highlighting the disrespectful way the announcement was made to a group of guys who make a living working for him in STL. Mentioning several times the lack of resources and overall support from the NWL front office who he said “spent twice as much time in Kansas City then St.Louis.”

So now the ground work had been set for this confrontation between Jackson and Baisden at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, MO this past Saturday night. As the show kicked off you knew two things for sure. One, you were gonna see incredible wrestling (Dak Draper, Thor Theriot, Lakota Red Cloud, Marty Belle, Blaine Meeks, Jet Royal, Ken Dharma, Hans Ruger, Belvedere, Niles Plonk, Amber Lynn and more were in action) and the confrontation between Jackson and Baisden was gonna be explosive.

NWL KC has flourish with men like Dak Draper leading the way. Though he is not liked very much one can not discredit his winning ways night after night. Photo credit ; René “The Knight Owl” Martinez

What we didn’t know was the news Major would break to the fans just moments before the confrontation happened.

Despite the dark clouds looming after the fall of NWL_STL, the breaking news cleared those dark clouds away at least for a moment as Major Baisden announced an unprecedented expansion. The NWL will be running shows outside it’s home cities of Kansas City and St.Louis for the first time ever starting in August! Those city’s include Omaha,NE, Springfield,MO, Topeka,KS and many more (full list pictured above). This news made the crowded erupt as the faithful in Kansas City realized these are all within driving distance to them and they likely have friends and relatives in those areas. As if that weren’t enough the roof almost come off the place when Major announced that #FightClub members would be able to attend these shows at no additional cost! This might have been the biggest pop of the night. Which was followed by about 2mins of “THANK YOU MAJOR” chants. Even from an outsiders perspective there is no doubt that outside the WWE Network itself, the NWL #FightClub pass is the best deal in all professional wrestling today. Visit FightKC.com for more info on that.

Finally we come to the much anticipated confrontation between the GM of STL and the owner of the company. As one would expect right at the peek of the fan fair about the expansion, Matt Jackson’s music hits and he walks out looking quite casual I might add accompanied buy a few NWL_STL regulars, the Blood Brothers and Dez Wellston only something was different about all of them. They’re demeanor had changed but most noticeably they’re appearance. Those who have followed wrestling in the Midwest before the rise of NWL would know them as Fitchette & Vega aka “The Beasties” and Mike Outlaw. They all seemed a little on edge and ready for a fight including Jackson. But surprisingly unlike most wrestling meetings/conferences this one did not end in fights flying and equipment being damaged. No, this meeting, after about 10mins of verbal daggers being thrown in both directions to an eventual draw, ended in a high stakes agreement between Jackson and Baisden. Instead of buying out Jackson’s contract of close to $50,000, Major turned a potential lability into yet another investment opportunity.

This is the opportunity that was given to Jackson to accept or decline: 6 shows, 6 shows under the direct direction of Jackson and his STL crew. He would be allowed to do it his way with no handcuffs or pretentious prepackaged gimmicks. New venue, new voice and a new vision of what NWL_STL should be in a blue collar, support your own kind-of town. Otherwise Jackson and NWL_STL are out of business, this time, for good! Now only time will tell what the future holds. Though the stakes are high and his a** is firmly on the line yet I get a feeling that that’s just the way Matt Jackson likes it because if these next 6 shows are his last with NWL, he can do it his way, the St.Louis way, with great wrestling, rowdy fans and a whole lot of F’n Anarchy! (Anarchy Rises will take place at the Matteson Square Garden in St.Peters, MO on July 15th)

2016 Missouri Wrestling Revival Future Star – Kevin Lee Davidson / Todd Letterman

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 19, 2017

The Missouri Wrestling Revival Future Star Award has always been one of my favorite awards to give a wrestler. In the past, we tried to honor wrestlers that were just starting out within their first few years that we believed had the talent as well as have shown the desire to go the extra mile on the roads, training with veterans and doing everything that they possibly could to succeed.

This award was one that was personally chosen by myself, and I have been very proud of all the great talents that we have chosen.

This year I decided to change the philosophy of the award to not only talents that are just starting out. The reason is that wrestling has evolved within the past few years where stars that have entertained us on the Independents for years have had the opportunity to become household names at the WWE such as Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens.

So I asked myself, Brian, with so many young wrestlers in the area often traveling in and out of the area, they often are in the mention of top wrestlers, but because of coming in and out of it how can I honor them for their efforts? So with that thought I imagine the MWR Future Star Award to be a representation of who I would send today to NXT if the WWE asked me and my reputation was on the line. Please note that former MWR Wrestlers of the Year winners will not be up for this award

This year we will have two announcements, one today and one tomorrow. Both as important as the other.

Kevin Lee Davidson is a wrestler that meets all the criteria that the past winners exhibited. I love his size, and his raw talents. He has shown that he is smart enough to reach out to the top trainers in the area to improve himself as he has been under the tutelage of former MWR Wrestler of the Year Brandon Espinosa, Former ROH World Champion Michael Elgin, and through camps with the likes of eight time NWA World Champion Harley Race. He has already wrestled in another country and been seen on Ring of Honor TV.

Today, he is a signed contracted wrestler with NWL that feature trainers such as former Harley Race’s right hand man, Derek Stone, and Michael Strider, as well as the wrestling minds of Chris Gough, Major Baisden, Matt Jackson and Travis Scott Bowden the foundation is as strong to succeed as it could be anywhere in the independents.

Brian Kelley – Owner and Editor Missouri Wrestling Revival

0A mere two and a half years into his wrestling career, Kevin Lee Davidson(aka Todd Letterman) has made a huge impact on the Midwest wrestling scene. Debuting in the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Alliance in the summer of 2014, “K.L.D.” made an immediate impact with his sheer size and power. He held the Television, Survivor, and Heavyweight Titles in his time with the promotion, but his journey was just beginning as he appeared for most of the major promotions in the St. Louis area; his experience includes matches with Dynamo Pro Wrestling, World League Wrestling, St. Louis Anarchy, and Wrestling Invades America(where he held their Heavyweight Title).

K.L.D.’s big step in the wrestling world was seeking the mentorship of Ring Of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling star “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin; this led to several appearances for ROH as well as matches in Canada and Europe. Most recently, his talents caught the eye of National Wrasslin’ League President Major Baisden…K.L.D. was one of the first to be signed to an exclusive NWL contract!

Now known as “The All-American” Todd Letterman, the big man is one of the top names in the new NWL promotion…will he be the first NWL St. Louis Champion? Don’t bet against him!

Look for an exclusive MWR Future of the Year Kevin Lee Davidson/ Todd Leterman artwork honoring her for his achievement from acclaimed artist Dartallion Allen Jr. in the future.

St Louis Anarchy helps with a families’ loss

Posted by flairwhoooooo on February 6, 2014

 photo 1_zps3af9b343.jpg

By Patrick Brandmeyer

Brian & Lori Davis had recently lost everything in a house fire, including their seven-year-old son. Fortunately, they had friends who were ready to lend a helping hand.

Brian, Lori, and Brian’s sister Lindsay were in attendance for St. Louis Anarchy’s Benefit Bash in Alton, Illinois. Members of the Anarchy roster were friends of the family and set up the event to raise money for the Davises; all of the proceeds from ticket sales and merchandise raffles went directly to the family.

As usual, St. Louis Anarchy presented a loaded lineup; Ring Of Honor stars Michael Elgin, Kyle O’Reilly, and A.C.H. were on the card as well as west-coast standout B-Boy. Several competitors made their debuts for the promotion and others made their returns after long absences.

Some people on the show were more concerned about their own matters, one of those being ring announcer/manager Greg Jovi. He had returned as a ring announcer for Yuletide Terror, but he still harbored deep-seated resentment toward the Anarchy fans. He lashed out at the fans in attendance at the start of the show before being run off by the Hooligans.

The Hooligans fended off a strong effort by the Two-Star Heroes (Matt Knicks & Chris Castro) and vowed that they would give the same treatment to the Young Bucks on March 1st. The fans in attendance had less than flattering sentiments regarding Matt & Nick Jackson.

Brandon Espinosa was in the rare position of being a fan favorite against “The Money” Matt Cage. Cage offered Espinosa some cash to “go down”, but Espinosa misinterpreted Cage’s intentions at first. Espinosa took the payoff but attacked Cage anyway to kick-start the bout; Espy went on to win a tough battle.

Chaos was the order of the day in a six-way dance featuring newcomers to the Anarchy roster. “Showtime” Bradley Charles and Geek Singh formed a temporary alliance to eliminate the competition, but SBC double-crossed Singh by rolling him up for a surprise pin. That left Charles one-on-one with Alex Castle, but Castle would emerge victorious as he continues to gain fan support in SLA.

The fans recognized Jeff O’Shea as “Not Matt Cage”; O’Shea had filled in for Cage as Castle’s tag partner at a previous show. That brought Cage himself to the ring to shake hands with his counterpart. O’Shea and Mallaki Matthews took on the duo of Alex The Big Owl and Gorgeous Jordan Lacey; The Big Owl showed a more aggressive side in picking up the win.

B-Boy had once teamed up with Homicide and his resume includes experience with IWA Mid-South, Wrestling Society X, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and Jersey All-Pro Wrestling. However, this was his first appearance in the St. Louis area and he was facing a crowd favorite in A.C.H. A.C.H. has been making a name for himself in ROH as well as other national promotions…despite the difference in overall experience, A.C.H. was able to get the tapout win over “The New Age Punisher” and earn his respect!

Mike Sydal showed off his yoga-enhanced flexibility on a few occasions, but it wasn’t quite enough to take down the popular Bolt Brady; Bolt got the win after several innovative maneuvers.

Despite Michael Elgin‘s national reputation, the fans were solidly behind Jojo Bravo in his quest to topple the powerhouse. Jojo did his best to wear down the “Unbreakable” one with sleeperholds, but Elgin finally defeated him after a turnbuckle powerbomb followed by his signature spiral bomb. It appeared Bravo had impressed Elgin, but Elgin mowed him down with a clothesline after raising his beaten opponent’s hand.

With a title shot at Gerald James in his future, Kyle O’Reilly sought to pick up some momentum heading into the Gateway To Anarchy weekend. Evan Gelistico was far from a mere “stepping stone” in O’Reilly’s journey and matched the current Ring Of Honor Tag Team Champion move for move. In the end, O’Reilly got the victory and now looks to capture the gold in St. Louis Anarchy!

Adam Raw returned to SLA to face Ricky Starks...with the recent trend of “old school” in wrestling, the two used several moves that you wouldn’t normally see in an Anarchy ring like the bearhug and iron claw. Raw got the win with a familiar-looking combination of moves: A big boot to the face followed by a legdrop off the ropes.

The main event was a wild brawl right out of the gate as Davey Vega and Mat Fitchett rushed the ring to battle with Anarchy Champion Gerald James and Jeremy Wyatt. Dorian Victor wasn’t above getting physically involved so it was a three-on-two situation at times. Despite the odds, Fitchett managed to plant James with a cradle piledriver to pick up the win over the champion!

The night wasn’t quite over as James, Wyatt, and Victor went on the attack once again. Greg Jovi ran into the ring to attack his former protege Fitchett and that brought out the Hooligans. Alex The Big Owl and Jordan Lacey weren’t far behind…but out of nowhere, Lacey turned on his tag team partner! At the end of the show, Lacey stood tall alongside James, Wyatt, Victor, and Jovi.

While the events of the wrestling show were memorable for the fans in attendance, it was special in a different way for the Davises…their friends at St. Louis Anarchy had put on a great show and given them some much-needed financial support in a tough time of their lives.

Are the Young Bucks prepared for the Hooligans at St Louis Anarchy?

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 23, 2014

 photo sla3_zps993a0ae7.jpg

The hardcore wrestling fan base are quick to point out that one of the top tag teams that you have never heard of is the Young Bucks. They consist of southern California heart throbs, brothers Matt and Nick Jackson, two young wrestlers that represent the west with their stereotypical glitz and glam, but make no mistake about the two are much more than just two pretty boys.

Many of the top teams went into a match against the Young Bucks, thinking they would be able to control them by grounding the brothers, only to find out that it is easier said than done. Matt and Nick has a second level that only the best teams possess, that quality has lead their opponents running out of gas, breathing for air and within moments looking at the ceiling at the bright lights, wandering what went wrong.

This has been the case with so many wrestling tag teams around the world that have tried their hand to keep up with the Young Bucks. For the past several years they have won fans over in great matches at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Chikara, Ring of Honor, Evolve and most recently at New Japan Pro Wrestling capturing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship by defeating Suzukigun (Taichi and Taka Michinoku).

Tag Team Championship and wrestling on most recently wrestling on IPPV this month for Evolve has the Young Bucks continuing their hot streak and adding more evidence to those that say that they are pro wrestling’s best tag team not with the WWE in 2014.

But is that about to change?

On February 28th and March 1st the Young Bucks have signed to wrestle at St. Louis Anarchy for their biggest shows in SLA History. The weekend is filled with many of the top talents in the Midwest today, mixed in with some of hottest young wrestlers in the world as Eddie Edwards, Davey Richard, Kyle O’ Reilly, Darin Corbin, Gerald James, Jeremy Wyatt, Bolt Brady Davey Vega, Brandon Espinosa and Mat Fitchett will all be in action for this Midwest Supercard.

 photo 0_zps774663b9.jpg

The Young Bucks are set to meet the very popular young SLA tag team of Davey Vega and Mat Fitchett on the first night of the double shot. Vega and Fitchett are two of the young singles wrestlers that have come together to form an exciting team that will match speed vs. speed and heart vs. heart.

The Young Bucks could very well head into the second night of the 2014 SLA Gateway to Anarchy Weekend 0-1.

 photo HH_zps747c618f.jpg

Win or loss on the first night there is a team that is looking to prove to the fans of the Young Bucks that their favorite team has met their match. That team is the Hooligans, Devin and Mason Cutter, ask any wrestler or fans in the Midwest who the best tag team in the area is and the answer is sure to be these two brothers, that have kept tag team wrestling alive. Ranked as the number one tag team in the MWR Coverage area, they are the only tag team to win the MWR Tag Team of the Year Awards twice after being chosen again in 2013.

We caught up with the Hooligans who had this to say on this huge match that is just over a month away “The Young Bucks are a world Traveled tag Team and one of the Best in the World. But in us they face a Hungry team one that wants what they have one that wants to prove they are the best. So in Alton il they best be prepared cause not only do they face The Hooligans They face us with we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

On March 1st, it will be 2 brothers vs. 2 brothers, the Jacksons vs. the Cutters in a war that will be of epic proportions. Not since the West Virginia’s, Hatfield family and Kentucky’s, McCoy’s went to war has there been a more talked about battle in this area.

 photo HOOLIGANS1_zps67d7a13a.jpg

Can the Young Bucks survive the onslaught that the Hooligans are capable of with a combination of, power and the underrated speed that the Cutter Brothers deliver early and often in a match?

The Young Bucks will hope to set up the Hooligans with excellent tag team moves such as the Aided dropkicks, the Crazy Dive, the Stereo 450° splashes Springboard splash (Nick) / standing moonsault (Matt) combination only to finish them with their breathtaking finishers the Early-Onset Alzheimer’s or More Bang for Your Buck (Rolling fireman’s carry slam by Matt followed by a 450° splash by Nick followed by a moonsault by Matt).

The Hooligans though have taught this generation of fans in the Midwest what true tag team wrestling is about by taking them to school as they cut the ring in half with perfect precision. That are masterful by creating chaos and havoc from start to finish that has left their opponents confused and bewildered questioning themselves on what happened after the Hooligans hit them with their own moves the Hooligan Rush and the Hooligan Driver.

The time has come for the Hooligans, will they be able to show the world that they are indeed the most underrated tag team today or will the Young Bucks add them to the list of victims that thought they were up to task to challenge them?

Purchase your tickets today to say that you were part of history when St Louis Anarchy presents Gateway to Anarchy and be ringside for this exciting ride to see the Best of the Midwest meet one of the Best in the World.
