NBWA ‘Pick Your Poison” recap 2-7-2009

Posted by flairwhoooooo on February 14, 2009

nbwa-2

By Rich Dalton:

First and foremost, THANK YOU to all the loyal NBWA fans that came to Danville on Saturday to support the NBWA.  Without your support and devotion there would be no NBWA, so thank you to you all!

As we are set to kick off “Pick Your Poison” we are informed by The Lead Council to the Board of Directors, Jonathon Castle that  the NBWA Mid-West TV Champion, Eric Ruffington is boycotting today’s show, due to the fact that the NBWA fans had chosen for Mr. Ruffington to face off against Cheapshot McGrot in a karaoke competition.  So,wrestling Cheapshot McGrot this afternoon was Cecil Cerveza.  To begin the match Cheapshot demonstrated to Cecil how to do his trademark hand jive, but after that, the fun and games were over with.  It was a hard fought match between the NBWA veterans but in the end Cheapshot was victorious.

Winner by pinfall: Cheapshot McGrot.

Next up on the agenda was a tag team match between the team  of Wild Bill and Nicky “The Weasel” Mankotti against “The Frat Pack” which was the team of Gavin Alexander and Jonathon Napier.  With their new attitudes in tow, Alexander and Napier are looking to take the NBWA tag team division by storm!  There seemed to be a few miscommunications during the match for Gavin and Napier, eventually causing “The Frat Pack” the match.  Wild Bill ended the match when he pinned Gavin following a frog splash.

Winners by pinfall: Wild Bill and Nicky “The Weasel” Mankotti.

Following the match after Gavin and Napier had left ringside, Bill and Weasel were celebrating their victory when who should appear but Aaron Matthews.  It looked as though Matthews had something he wanted to discuss with Wild Bill, but as Aaron had Bill’s attention Jeff Harris attacked Bill from the backside.  This wasn’t just an attack, it was evident that Harris and Matthews had every intention of putting Bill out of action by trying to take out his shoulder.  Just when it looked as if Wild Bill was done for, ‘Bloody” Harker Dirge had come to the rescue.  BHD had chased Harris and Matthews out of the ring, and  in their haste someone had forgotten their tag team title belts, and now Harker Dirge was in possession of the belt.

Following the melee Miss Amanda announces that the new NBWA Heavyweight Champion “Mr. Fabulous” Jason V. was going to be making his way to the ring accompanied by Serenity.  Jason V. makes it known that the NBWA will be keeping in last years tradition with an invitational battle royal to celebrate the NBWA’s 4th anniversary.  Today though, we will be getting a small taste of the battle royal with the winner of today’s battle royal being granted with the final entry in the HUGE invitational Battle royal on March 7th.  With that being said, let the Battle Royal begin…..

The opening participants are DaCobra and “Dangerous” Drew Thomas, who are followed by “The Unpredictable” Cyclone,  Aaron Matthews,  Jeff Harris,  Angelo Santelli, Nicky “The Weasel” Mankotti,  Serinity,  Issan Hadeev,  Cheapshot McGrot, “The Prime Cut” Nick Cutler, Vic “The Pitbull” Santelli,  Wild Bill, D’Andre King, “The Apex” Blake Steel, Gavin Alexander, Cecil Cerveza, Christian Rose, and Anderson Rhodes,.  When the dust settled the final two combatants were Angelo Santelli, and Aaron Matthews, the two former members of “The New Breed” stood face to face for a moment, and then all hell broke loose as the former allies tried to tear one another limb from limb, but in the end Angelo sent Aaron Matthews over the top rope for the win, and the final spot in the invitational battle royal to be held on March 7th, with the w inner being guaranteed a  NBWA Heavyweight Title shot.

Winner: Angelo Santelli.

Following the match Santelli made it know that he was the most decorated champion in the NBWA, and the only title that had eluded him over the years was the one title in Jason V’s possession and he was coming after it!

The next match of the afternoon was a “First Blood Match” between  “The Lord of the Ring” Issan Hadeev and “Dangerous” Drew Thomas.  With this match being a no DQ match we saw the use of many foreign objects such as Issan’s flag pole, a chair, and a staple gun.  In the closing moments of the match involved Issan Hadeev repeatedly stapling the forehead of Drew Thomas causing his head to bleed and thus ending the match.

Winner by first blood: “The Lord of the Ring” Issan Hadeev..

After the match had ended something  inside Drew Thomas head snapped he viscously attacked Issan and the two former members of “Dangerous by Design” brawled inside the ring and out.  Members of the security staff tried to separate the two but to no avail as the y brawled their way into the locker room area.

The fifth match of the afternoon was another match that was chosen by the NBWA fans for “Pick Your Poison” and was between the team of  the newly crowned NBWA No-Limits champion “The Prime Cut” Nick Cutler, and the man he defeated for the=2 0title on Jan.11th  “The Apex” Blake Steel.  Their opponents, who won the fan polling was the team of D’Andre King and Vic “The Pitbull” Santelli, otherwise known as “Encore”.  It was evident from the get go that the team of Cutler and Steel were going some trouble putting their past match behind them. You could hear Cutler throughout the match tell Blake Steel “I could have done it better”.  Nick Cutler wasn’t the only one who had a problem with Blake Steel during the match up, Anderson Rhodes also had issues with Steel after Blake had told Rhodes to go back to the locker room during the match, and Rhodes promised that Blake would have to deal with Eric Ruffington when he returned to the NBWA next month.  With all the bickering within the team of Cutler and Steel, it was just a matter of time before the team self destructed.  I the closing moments of the match it looked as though Blake Steel was going to pull of the win, but Cutler entered the ring and delivered an “Un-prettier” to Blake Steel and then draped D’Andre King over Blake’s lifeless body for the 3 count.

Winner by pinfall: “Encore” ( D’Andre King & Vic “The Pitbull” Santelli)

The next match of the afternoon was the match between the 2008 Alberta J. Murray Memorial Tournament Champion, Da Cobra vs. “The Unpredictable” Cyclone.  This match was al so a “Pick Your Poison “match and the NBWA fans had chosen for this match to be a “ Caribbean Rules Match”.  Apparently the rules for this match were chosen at one point or another by Cyclone himself, and decided it would be to his advantage  to keep the rules of this match a secret until the rules had to be enforced.  The one rule we did know at the onset of this match was that there were two weapons in opposite corners of the match, and they may be used during the match up.  But, there were certain conditions…. They may only be used  for  30 seconds,  a bell would be sounded at the beginning of the time period, and a bell would be sounded at the end of the time period, and if either participant was still holding the weapon at the sound of the second bell, that wrestler would be disqualified.  There would be 4 of these periods within the 15 minute time limit for this match.   So after the lengthy explanation of this rule the bell sounded and Da Cobra hit Cyclone square in the head with a roundhouse kick and went for a cover and got the 1..2…3!   BUT….. “The Don” Kato Morales chimed in from his position at the announce table, and read from the list of Caribbean Rules that there were no 3 counts, you must pin your opponent for a four count.  So the match was restarted, and we saw 2 of the weapons periods  come into play, the first, Cyclone used a chair shot to20the midsection of DaCobra, but was only able to get a 3 count.  Some time went by and the action had now spilled outside the ring when the bell signaling a second weapon period sounded and DaCobra had used a cookie sheet to deliver a knockout blow to Cyclone outside the ring, and a referee Carley Rae administered a 10 count, BUT….yet again “The Don” interjected himself and let everyone know that  in a “Caribbean Rules Match” that in order to be counted out, it must be a 20 count.  But by that time Cyclone had recovered and re entered the ring.  So the match continued until a point where DaCobra had thrown Cyclone over the top rope, and Cyclone’s entrance music began to play, at first everyone had thought it was a malfunctioning sound system, but yet again ‘The Don” announced  one more of the undisclosed  Caribbean rules, and said that  if anyone was thrown over the top rope, it would lead to a disqualification.  So Cyclone was officially announced as the winner of the match.

Winner by disqualification:  “The Unpredictable” Cyclone.

Now, the time had come for this afternoons main event.  A Handicapped tag team elimination match between “The Fabulous” Jason V. and his partners, the NBWA Tag Team Champions” Aaron Matthews & Jeff Harris, who were accompanied by Serenity.  Their opponents for the afternoon were The Heritage Wrestling Coalition Champion “Bloody0 Harker Dirge, and the partner for BHD was chosen by the NBWA fans through the “Pick Your Poison” poll was former NBWA Tag Team Champion Noon Moon.  As a last minute stipulation to the match it was announced that if BHD or Noon Moon pinned Jason V. they would become the NBWA Heavyweight Champion, and if Aaron or Jeff pinned Harker Dirge, they would in turn become the new HWC Champion.  So now with all the stipulations in place, the bell sounds  and the match is under way.  The team headed by Jason V. had the upper hand throughout much of the opening  part of the match, as the team executed many quick tags to keep a fresh man in the ring as they wore down Harker Dirge.  Eventually Harker would tag in Noon Moon to get the fresh man in the ring against the trio of champions.  The match went back and fourth for some time before it came down to BHD and Jeff Harris in the ring as the legal men when harker was able to lock in his patented  Dragon Sleeper, “The Dirt Nap” and Harris had no choice but to tap out.  Now the odds were all evened up with 2 men on each side of the ring, that is until Harker Dirge had a momentarily lapse in sanity and retrieved his chain from the corner of the ring and used it to knock the sense out of Aaron Matthews, and gotten himself disqualified.  Now Noon Moon was all alone against the team of Aaron Matthews and Jason V.  Noon Moon used Harker’s mistake to his=2 0advantage though covering Matthews for the 3 count.  Now it was down to Jason V. and Noon Moon. An angry Jason V.  attacked Noon Moon and soon removed the mask, and the face behind the mask this time was none other than Angelo Santelli!  The two NBWA vet’s fought back and fourth  and as the match continued  “The Don” had slyly  gotten up from his seat  and stood at ringside.  In the mean time Serenity was walking around the ring cheering on Jason V. when “The Don” passed a  huge crescent wrench  off to the young lady.  In the mean time, Angelo had been setting Jason up fir the “Sky High”, but Serenity had reached out to Jason V. and passed off the wrench and V. who had used it to  knock Angelo’s lights out.  All this was unknown to referee Chad Tally who had his back turned away from the action trying to keep “The Don” out of the match.  When Tally had turned back to the action all he could see was Jason V. on top of Angelo and laid down a 3 count.

Winner by Pinfall: “The Fabulous” Jason V.

That just about wraps it up for this edition of the NBWA.  Be sure to mark your calendar on Sunday, February 22nd for the next NBWA live show, featuring legend of the ring Tracy Smothers as he returns to the NBWA!  The action will get under way at the New Breed Gym, located at 400 Sager St. in Danville, IL, with the opening bell set to sound at 2:00.

Friday was here and I was more than ready to make my way to Richmond Missouri, to see World League Wrestling in action. They had invited us to meet with fellow wrestling fans to invite them to come too our site and sign up for a chance to win a free MWR T-shirt during their first show of 2009.

The doors opened up and the place filled up very quickly with wrestling fans, meanwhile my girlfriend went around to meet the fans and to encourage them to come to our booth and sign up. The legend himself Harley Race was at the table with autographs for the fans along with a handshake, Dan Gier announced on the PA that very shortly we would see some exciting action soon and not to forget to sign up at our booth. Former WWE Star Eugene was sitting near WLW rising star Amy Hennig, with kids and adults a like coming up to meet them. While looking at the there of them I felt as I was part of wrestling history as before me were the Past (Harley Race) the present (Eugene) and the future of Pro Wrestling ( Amy Hennig).

The show started off with two of the rising stars of the WLW, Dustin Lane and Brian Breaker. Breaker came to the ring as one half of the WLW Tag Team Champions along with Dinn T Moore. The last time I saw Breaker, I saw potential but it was obvious that he was just starting and seemed to have had a long ways to go. I had the privilege of seeing Dustin Lane in his first match at WLW against The Vietnam Phenom” Bao Nguyen and was really impressed with his athleticism and skill.

Dustin Lane and Brian Breaker start the action.

Dustin Lane and Brian Breaker start the action.

Breaker proved early in the match that his time at the Harley Race Academy and tag teaming with Dinn T Moore had paid off. Lane and Breaker went back and forth with Lane targeting Breakers left arm and Breaker countered with his power to get out of trouble when needed. Before I knew it the 15 minute time limit had expired

Brian Breaker used his power to his advantage.

Brian Breaker used his power to his advantage.

The next match was between the “Young One” Darin Waid taking on Breaker’s tag team partner the ever dangerous Dinn T Moore. The crowd at Richmond despises Dinn T Moore and showered him with chants that were not flattering. Waid started the match off using his speed to keep the Champion at bay. Dinn T took the control of the match just for a few minutes but the crowd really seemed to light the fire in Waid as there were no stopping the man.

Dinn T Moore uses mind games to start the match.

Dinn T Moore uses mind games to start the match.

Moore hit a devastating clothesline that would have stopped any other man. Moore went for a forearm shot in the corner but Waid tossed him nearly out of the ring. Moore returned the favor with a powerful right, followed up with a body block. Dinn T made the mistake of going to the top, which Waid used his speed to capitalize on using the ropes to catapult himself to hit Moore with a flying kick. Waid looked to have Moore’s number but with a quick strike into a slam, Moore went and got the 1,2,3.

Next up was a short intermission that led to the WLW Women’s Champion Stacey O’Brien defending her title against arch enemy Amy Hennig. Amy defeated Stacey briefly for the title this past fall but Stacey regained the belt on the way to becoming the first ever MWR Female Wrestler of the Year. Prior to the match Chants of Amy Hennig rang through the building.

The match started with Stacey delivering a slap to the challenger’s face which infuriated Hennig and she chased Stacey around the ring which allowed the Champion to get the upper hand for just a moment. Amy took an early advantage and worked O’Brien’s leg to perfection and had her crawling to the ropes for the break. Hennig’s name was being chanted even louder than before when the Champion was able to kick Hennig into the ropes head first. With a moment of hope, O’Brien attacked with an arsenal of moves, forearms, kicks and body slams were delivered with force. Hennig showed that she would not give up and took all the champion could give and came back to deliver some offense of her own. Then it happen, O’Brien claimed that she had a leg injury and begged the ref for a break but Hennig would have none of it saying that she had seen this one too many times and proceeded to attack, when O’Brien struck with a roll up and retain the title much to the dismay of Hennig and her fans.

Amy Hennig works the leg of Stacey O’Brien

Amy Hennig works the leg of Stacey O’Brien

What I noticed early was how much more confident Hennig was in the ring and it was obvious that O’Brien was taking the rising star more serious in this encounter. This rivalry is far from over and may be one of the most exciting feuds of the year in the Midwest in 2009.

I was excited when it was announced that the tag team Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker would be defending their tag team titles against Waid and Lane. I had caught up with the menacing due to get their thoughts of 2009 and the tag team division and they had this to say.

I must admit after seeing how much Breaker had improved his wrestling along with more power to his arsenal, I was on the Moore and Breaker bandwagon.. Add on the fact that his tag team partner was none other than one of the most complete wrestlers in the Midwest Dinn T Moore, I was pumped up to see this tag team. A tag team I felt could lead the way in 2009.

The Richmond faithful chanted NEW CHAMPS when Waid and Lane entered the ring and all I could think was fat Chance! You can not say that Richmond is not a sharing bunch because they gave the Moore and Breaker a chant of their own “OLD CHAMPS”.

Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker lets the fans know who they champs are!

Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker lets the fans know who they champs are!

Before the start of the bell, the Champions ambushed their opponents. When the ref was able to force Moore back to his corner Breaker wisely powered Lane to his partner’s corner. Lane was able to withstand the early attack and make a tag for his team which allowed them to go on the offense for the first time. The Champions may have had the power but the challengers had the speed and utilized it to their advantage. This showed when Breaker bounced off the ropes and was treated to a swift dropkick. When it was time to win tag they too showed they could double team and took turns with chops in the corner.

Darin Waid shows one of his arsenal of moves.

Darin Waid shows one of the many moves in his arsenal.

With one mistake from Lane, Moore was showed his skills when he delivered a shoulder block that took the young wrestler off his feet. I thought at this moment that the titles were safe and the crowd must have sensed it to because they clapped and yelled for Lane to make the tag. Dan Gier stated that 10 minutes had expired and even with the crowed on his side, Moore and Breaker controlled the match with pure dominance…. Or so it would seem Lane was able to hit Moore with a neckbreaker which stunned him long enough to allow Lane to get the fresh Waid the tag. Waid and the crowd was on fire and the with the four men going at it at once. Moore looked to have things going their way and had slammed Lane in the middle of the ring. Moore then went to the top rope only to have Waid strike and hit him with a flying stunner off the top rope. The crowd went nuts and we did indeed have NEW CHAMPS.

During intermission Harley entered the ring to show respect by having two presentations, one was 300 to the Eagalton center to promote activities to the organization. A special donation was given to the Franklin family $500 to the cystic fibrosis foundation. Proving once again that Wrestling and the communities they come to have a close knit bond that each other share.

The main event was upon us and we would crown a new WLW Champion. Eugene had entered already entered the ring when Steve “King of the 450” Anthony came to the ring and asked Eugene for a “small favor” which was for Eugene to stay out of this match because this was Anthony’s destiny to be the Champion.

Steve Anthony ask Eugene for a favor as a friend.

Steve Anthony ask Eugene for a favor as a "friend".

Eugene was confused on what to do, stay and wrestle like the fans wanted him to or go to the back and call it a night as Anthony had wanted from his friend. Anthony got tired of waiting and attcked and that’s when Superstar Steve Fender made the save.

Anthony was feeling the pressure from Fender as Eugene was still hurt on the outside of the ring. When Anthony pleaded for a break Fender hesitated which left an opening for Anthony to kick Fender in the stomach. Anthony’s good fortune did not last long because Eugene got back in the ring to get a few laughs as Anthony’s expense, at one time riding him like a horse and patting his butt.

Eugene always takes time to ask the fans what they want.

Eugene always takes time to ask the fans what they want.

Eugene and Fender showed each other mutual respect by shaking hands before they went after each other. When Anthony did come back to the ring Fender and Eugene was ready with a double team. The problem arose when Fender went for the pin; Eugene was smart enough to make the save. Fender returned the favor when he Superkicked Eugene and then had to make the save before Anthony was able to pin the former WWE star.

Superstar Steve makes the save.

Superstar Steve makes the save.

Fender went to the top to hit Anthony with a flying head butt while Eugene was down but missed. Eugene was taking some hits from the cocky youngster when he suddenly “Hulked up”. Anthony persevered and at one point accidentally threw Eugene onto ref, which prompted the other ref to come into the ring to try to count the pin. Fender by this time had caught his second wind and hit Anthony with fierce punches and a beautiful bridge suplex. By that time a third ref, Johnny Gold had entered the ring to count the pinfall. When it looked as if Eugene was to make the pin on Anthony, Gold hit the mat a second time but when it was time for him to count to three, something was in his eye???

Eugene’s attention was distracted just for a split second, which allowed Anthony to kick Eugene into the corner and the force propelled him back to Anthony who rolled him up while Johnny Gold suddenly could count to three and did so in two seconds. That evil Johnny Gold!!!

World League Champion Steve Anthony

World League Champion Steve Anthony

2009 started off with a bang, Steve Anthony was the new World League Wrestling Champion, Dustin Lane and Darin Waid had done what I thought was impossible and defeated Dinn T Moore and Brian Breaker for the WLW Tag Team Championship. Brian Breaker has convinced me that he is one of the top rising stars not only in WLW but in the Midwest. I have no doubts that Amy Henning is a superstar in the making and treasure the opportunity to see her up close and personal before she makes it to the top of the world.

WLW is filled with a great group of young talent in the locker room and 2009 looks to be a breakout year. Join WLW in a town near you. For more information please go to the WLW please take time to check out their website at WLW-WEBSITE.

Pierre Abernathy puts the Bearded Men to rest

Posted by reimaginejournalism on February 12, 2009

By Kari Williams

Throughout his nearly four-year career, Pierre Abernathy has been involved in a number of feuds as he travled across the country, but none more impactful than the Submission Squad versus the Bearded Men from Space Station Eleven in his home promotion, Lethal Wrestling Alliance (LWA).

The feud has had many matches regarded as favorites by the fans, including the eight-man elimination street fight at Circus Maximus ’08 and the Tables, Ladders and Chairs match from Yuletide Terror ’08.

“I thought [the street fight] got really crazy, and I was happy with that. This was a feud built off hatred and it should [have] gotten out of hand, and it did. A lot of people in the crowd were scared, and the cops were called, so, in [an] odd way, it is exactly what we wanted.

“The TLC was great. Those guys risked it all for the first ever LWA tag team titles, and although I was not happy with the outcome, you have to respect all the guys in that one. I am not a fan of the Egos, but my beef is more with the Bearded Men. Davey Vega, however, has a score to settle with K.C. Karrington. Although I dont like K.C., that guy will be a star one day,” Abernathy said.

This feud has gone on for years, and comes down to one simple point that Abernathy will never forget.

“What started this feud was that we feel there is a way wrestling should be done and the [Bearded Men] feel there is a way wrestling should be done, and we do not agree at all. Wrestling is not built off funny and flipping and a 130lb guy thinking he is a wrestler because he can go to Highspots and buy tights. Those guys are a joke and should not be in wrestling at all. I will not sleep until they are gone,” Abernathy said.

After LWA’s Jan. 24 show in House Springs, MO, Abernathy was sure to get a good night’s rest because he pinned The Bearded Men from Space Station Eleven’s Billy McNeil. As per stipulation, the losing team was forced to break up forever in the LWA and the captain of the losing team would never be seen in a LWA again.

The Submission Squad formed becaue of Violent Jay Caster, who is no longer in the wrestling business. According to Abernathy, the name stayed and Nick Tyson and Dingo joined the group, and it took off from there. Since its inception, only good has come from the Squad and stars have been made from the feud.

In spite of the Squad working well as a coheisive unit and having the same technical wrestling techniques, Abernathy feels that the group cannot show their full potential.

“With what the Submission Squad is supposed to be, a lot of guys who are really entertaining don’t get to bring that out as much because the Submission Squad is about pure wrestling, so that’s what they do, and they’re in the Submission Squad, but just because the guys can wrestle doesn’t mean they’re not also entertaining,” Abernathy said.

Abernathy believes that Tyson taught him the most throughout his time in wrestling.

“[Nick Tyson] taught us how to wrestle, and we pretty much picked up everything else on the road. You learn from everybody and what he taught us that I don’t think gets taught a lot anyway—a lot of people do it, but most don’t at least in this area (Missouri/Midwest)—is respect. How to respect the people that came before you and how to respect the people you’re working with,” Abernathy said.

Abernathy’s Submission Squad cohorts followed him to High Voltage Wrestling (HVW) in a slightly different form as the Bandana Mafia to wreak more havoc on the wrestling world thanks to Evan Gelistico.

“The Mafia was 100 percent Evan Gelistico’s idea. It was formed as a joke to make fun of the serious bad ass wrestling gimmick that I think you see way too much of in indy wrestling. We had no idea that us just being funny would get over so much,” Abernathy said.

“I came up with the Bandana Mafia, when I was told that instead of teaming wih Pierre I would be teaming up with Davey Vega. So I called him and said that we would be doing an unnecessary gangsta gimmick and that [we] would call ourselves the Bandana Mafia because we both wore bandanas,” said Gelistico.

According to Abernathy, “nothing is more dumb than a 150lb white kid acting like a bad ass gansta so we make fun of that all teh time and well Evan decided to take HVW as a chance to put it in the ring.”

As a member of both groups, “Spitfire” Davey Vega feels confident with Abernathy and Gelistico on his side.

“The best thing about being apart of both groups is that I get to be in a group of people I know and can trust inside and outside of the LWA. I dont have to worry about teaming with someone who I don’t know and possibly dont have both our interests at heart. They got my back and I got theirs,” Vega said.

Gelistico feels that the Submission Squad has had more success since they have “won 2 sets of Tag Titles…and gone all over the states.” However, in HVW the Bandana Mafia recently won the six-man cup from Aaron Matthews, Cecil Cerveza and Jeff Harris.

Through all of the trials and tribulations of the Squad and the Mafia, Abernathy still believes that the most important lesson he has learned through wrestling is quite simple.

“Respect. How to respect people, how to respect the people that came before me. I think it’s a lot of stuff that people are not doing and need to learn, but respect and how to be humble,” Abernathy said.

Oklahoma Shooter: The Dan Hodge Story.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on February 10, 2009

Oklahoma Shooter:
The Dan Hodge Storyhodgebook

NEWTON, Iowa – The incredible athletic career of Dan Hodge, the only man to ever win national titles in both boxing and wrestling, has been published by Culture House Books and is now available.

It is called Oklahoma Shooter: The Dan Hodge Story.

Hodge came out of Perry, Oklahoma, to set the amateur wrestling world on fire in the mid 1950s. He won three NCAA Championships at 177 pounds for the University of Oklahoma, never losing a match or even a takedown. He also won three national titles in freestyle wrestling and one in Greco-Roman.

He also competed on two Olympic teams. He made the 1952 team as an unheralded 19-year-old, at that time the youngest wrestler ever to make an Olympic team. In 1956, he won the silver medal in the 174-pound class in Melbourne, Australia.

On April 1, 1957, Hodge was on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, the only amateur wrestler ever accorded such an honor.

After completing his amateur wrestling career with his third NCAA title in 1957, Hodge turned to boxing. He was 17-0 as an amateur boxer and on March 24, 1958, won the National Golden Gloves heavyweight title with a dramatic knockout victory in Madison Square Garden!

Hodge boxed briefly as a professional, posting a record of 8-2 and at one time was being considered for a world title shot against champion Floyd Patterson. In the book, he discloses for the first time the behind-the-scenes problems he had with the business, and why he left boxing even though he had a promising future.

After his horrible experience in pro boxing, Hodge became a professional wrestler and is regarded as the greatest junior heavyweight champion of all time. He is also considered one of the greatest “shooters” (a wrestler willing to wrestle for real at any time) in the history of the sport.

The book concludes with a ranking of where Dan Hodge fits on the list of the greatest shooters of all time, dating back to the start of the early 1900s.

Author Mike Chapman has known Dan and his wife, Dolores, for over 30 years and has spent considerable time with Dan talking about his incredible career. A recognized author and historian, Chapman is the founder of the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo, Iowa, and the founder of W.I.N. magazine, one of the top wrestling publications in the country. He has been named National Wrestling Writer of the Year six times, by five different organizations. This is his 21st book, and 15th on wrestling.

The book includes 66 photographs, many never seen before. The photos cover Hodge’s careers in both wrestling and boxing, as both an amateur and professional
.
“Dan Hodge has lived a truly amazing life,” said Chapman. “He has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in sports history – from Jack Dempsey to Rocky Marciano, from Ed “Strangler” Lewis to Lou Thesz. There are photos of all of them with Dan in the book, plus many stories about them.”

The foreword was written by Jim “J.R.” Ross, one of the best-known announcers and commentators in pro wrestling history.

Oklahoma Shooter: The Dan Hodge Story is published by culture House Books of Newton, Iowa, a small publishing company that specializes in books about sports legends and movie personalities. It sells for $22.95, with $5 shipping and handling costs.

MWR Rankings Review
February 2008

by Josh Ray
MWR Owner-Editor

Note: Review the updated MWR Rankings by clicking here.

Singles

2009 in the MWR coverage area has, up until this point, been the year of former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Superstar Al Snow. Snow broke into the MWR Rankings at number 100, but made appearances all over the Midwest in January. One of those appearances was an entertaining and informative interview by Absolute Wrestling Radio’s Mark Bland and Matt Krueger. After a big victory over MWR 2008 Wrestler of the Year Jeremy Wyatt for NWA Dynamo Pro, all eyes are on Snow for his next move.

In the last update to the rankings in January, a reader made the comment that Zach Thompson should be listed. Thompson responded with great showings in the past month in the region, resulting in his listing at number 92. Thompson’s recent tag team pairing with Mike Sydal for 3XWrestling could steal some time away from Thompson’s singles efforts, but the time with the young, capable Sydal will do wonders for both men in the future.

Right above Thompson in the rankings is Edmund “Livewire” McGuire at number 91. McGuire is an electrifying and extremely popular wrestler for All American Pro Wrestling. So popular, in fact, that he was selected by wrestling fans to be the number one contender to AAPW Heavyweight Champion “Serial Thriller” Shane Rich. McGuire came up short in that effort, but proved that he is a top talent in the area.

For the longest time, Feature Presentation’s Eric Ruffington has been in the top ten or top twenty of the singles rankings for some time, but his partner Blake Steel is starting to gain steam in the singles division, as well. Currently ranked at number 80, expect this NBWA mainstay to gain traction in solo competition.

If respect from the fans was the only criteria for our ranking system then following his match with Dingo for High Voltage Wrestling, Kahagas would be ranked number one. As it stands, the “Japanese Nightmare” is sitting solidly at number 65 with a very promising future in the MWR coverage area.

Even after his MWR December 2008 Wrestler of the Month Award, one of the best kept secrets in the area is a man by the name Curly. The Three Stooges nut is popular with the fans and talented beyond belief. In his very young wrestling career, Curly has already proven to have loads of potential. Wrestling for IWA Productions and AAPW, Curly comes in at number 43.

Like a bullet, “King of 450” Steve Anthony shoots into the rankings at number 38. The brand new World League Wrestling Heavyweight Champion defeated Eugene Dinnsmore and “Superstar” Steve Fender for the belt this past month and really solidified himself as a top Midwest wrestling star after great success with tag team partner Marc Godeker in WLW. Expect 2009 to be Anthony’s year.

Another champion that has top ten potential this year is the 3XW Cruiserweight Champion “Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell. The Cruiserwight division in 3XW is healthy, filled with wrestlers that have held championship gold elsewhere in the MWR coverage area. A strong showing by Rockwell over the next few months will have him listed well above his current number 18.

The margins are narrowing amongst the top ten wrestlers, especially in the top five. “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt is still number one, but wrestlers such as Mark Sterling, Hunter Matthews, and Donovan Ruddick all gunning for the top spot!

Tag Teams

A new tag team is making waves in All American Wrestling (AAW). The team of Josh Raymond and Christian Able, collectively known as House of Truth, have picked up two victories in as many months and sit at number 25 in the rankings. House of Truth are slowly working toward AAW Tag Team Title contention and a showdown with the champs, the Phoenix Twins, who sit at number 2.

Mad Dog McDowell and Aaron Masterson are an odd pair at first glance, but as the Bayou Outlaws both men are the Metro East Championship Wrestling (MECW) Tag Team Champs. As the level of competition continues to heat up in MECW, so too will the ranking of the Bayou Outlaws. McDowell and Masterson are currently ranked number 17.

Mark Sterling is one half of two tag teams in the rankings. One is the Gentlemen’s Club (with Gage Octane), and they are ranked number 12 with the 3XW Tag Team Titles. With Todd Countryman at their side, Sterling and Octane have managed to dodge title defenses in recent months, but have one on the horizon. With a victory, this team should climb back into the top ten. Sterling’s other tag team partner, Darrien Sanders, adds a lethal “kick” to the equation as they come together to form the LONRs. The LONRs are ranked number 3, but could very well take the top spot before the summer wrestling season.

The team with the most upward momentum right now, however, is the Ego Express. KC Karrington and Steven Kennedy are the first ever Lethal Wrestling Alliance Tag Team Champions and are ranked number 5. A possible future title defense against the Northstar Express could make or break this team’s chances at the number one spot in the rankings!

Female Wrestlers

A lack of variety in the WLW Women’s Division has Stacey O’Brien seeming less dominant than she actually is, so she still maintains the number 1 spot. However, Alexis Lightfoot’s recent activity, coupled with MsChif’s return to the MWR coverage area could spell more competition than O’Brien has had in quite some time.

Conclusion

That does it for this edition of the MWR Rankings Review. Please feel free to send in all questions, comments, or suggestion. You can also click below this article to comment on it, but please keep things respectful!

January 24 All American Pro Wrestling recap

Posted by flairwhoooooo on February 7, 2009

Recap By AAPW Management with Picture commentary By Brian “Flair” Kelley

With freezing temperatures outside, over 160 fans were treated to hot action at New Beginnings Assembly for AAPW’s Fan’s Choice Show!

“Homicidal” Steven Davis and Carnage were introduced for the opening tag team bout. Davis came to the ring alone and told the crowd that his partner Carnage had been fired by their manager, Brooklyn Bobby, because Carnage had not won a match since May of 2007. Davis stated he refused to have a loser as his partner and introduced a replacement. Ax Stevens. Their opponents, The Money Makin’ Jam Boys, K.C. Jackson and Mississippi Madman. Jackson used his quickness to gain the early advantage but was soon shut down by Davis and Stevens. Davis and Stevens were able to cut the ring in half and keep Jackson from tagging his opponent but Jackson showed tremendous heart and never quit. Madman got the tag and used his size and power to finish off Stevens with a splash for the pin.

Fans had voted Jorden Vandal as the newcomer to AAPW. However, Vandal could not make it this night. Jay Spade received the honors. Spade, an undersized rookie took on the undefeated and mysterious Crimson Shock. Spade showed he was no slouch at the beginning but Shock beat down and mauled Spade the rest of the match. Shock applied a figure four leglock and used the ropes for added leverage. Shock refused to break the hold at the referee’s 5 count and the ref called for the bell. Shock became extremely upset and continued to let out his frustrations on Spade. TY BLADE came to the ring and pulled shock off the rookie. A confrontation ensued between Blade and Shock and SHOCK WAS UNMASKED by Blade! Gaylord Stevens, who ran to ringside, covered the mysterious wrestlers head and led him away from ringside. Stevens later offered a bounty to Ty’s opponent later in the night, Shawn Shultz, to retrieve the mask.

“Playboy” Paul Rose defeated El Magnifico in what can only be described as a comical match with a flatliner.

Mike Masters’s was in a nasty move prior to his match with Curly.

Curly, Missouri Wrestling Revival’s wrestler of the month and also undefeated as a rookie, took on Mike Masters. Curly’s unorthodox style was a bit much for Masters as Curly defeated him with an elbow drop.

Mike Masters had Curly reeling early in the match, but Curly proved that he has what it takes to beat one of the best in AAPW.

Venom, the wrestler fan’s voted to see make a return to AAPW, took on another big and powerful newcomer in Travis Sawyer. Sawyer is the son of Buzz Sawyer. Venom’s only advantage gained was with underhanded tactics but it was not enough as Sawyer used a cradle shock slam to get the pinfall.

Shawn Shultz came to the ring and got the crowd into a frenzy. His opponent, Ty Blade, came to the ring carrying the mask he removed from Crimson Shock. As Blade gained an advantage late in the match, Gaylord Stevens came to ringside to distract Blade and Shultz used a school boy roll up to get the pin. Although many saw Shultz use the tights.

Toe to toe Shultz and Blade went at it. On this night Gaylord Stevens would be the difference when he distracted Blade and Shultz took the advantage for the win.

AAPW fan’s voted to see Chocolate Thunder V. Tony Stetson in a Lumberjack match. The crowd was not disappointed. Fan’s were screaming from start to finish. Carnage came to ringside and attacked “Homicidal” Steven Davis. This surprised fan’s and the lumberjacks at ringside as Carnage beat on Davis throughout the gym. The brawl even got the attention of the wrestlers in the ring. Stetson took advantage and rolled Chocolate Thunder up for the pin.

The main event featured two of the most popular wrestlers in AAPW. Fan’s voted for Edmund “Livewire” McGuire to get a title shot against AAPW champion, “Serial Thriller” Shane Rich.

This match featured everything from technical wrestling, submission holds, brawling, and high flying. It was a back and forth battle with several surprises.

Edmund "Livewire" McGuire looked strong early in the match as he catches Rich in the corner going for a high risk maneuver.

At one point, both wrestlers brawled into the crowd. Livewire tossed Rich over the guard rail clear into the 3rd row! Livewire got Rich back into the ring and delivered a leg drop from the top rope which appeared to secure the victory for Livewire. RICH KICKED OUT! Livewire continued the assault and set Rich up for a superkick. Rich ducked and lifted Livewire onto his shoulders. Livewire fought out and went for a victory roll which the champion blocked and pinned Livewire’s shoulders for the 3 count.

Shane Rich showed on this night that he is one of the most complete wrestlers in the Midwest, here he works the air attack.

At the conclusion of the match, Livewire addressed the crowd. He expressed how disappointed he was and how sorry he was for letting down his fans. Livewire stated he would be taking some time off from wrestling. As Livewire said his goodbye, Shawn Shultz snuck into the ring and hit Livewire with a DDT. Shultz then stood over Livewire and berated him until Rich ran back to the ring for the save. Heated words were exchanged between Rich and Shultz. Security had to escort Shultz from ringside.

AAPW returns to West Frankfort on Saturday March 14th. This event will feature the fan’s choice tag team championship when The Lonrs take on “Spitfire” Davey Vega and “Blackheart” Johnny Vinyl.
