MWR Spotlight: “Serial Thriller” Shane Rich

Posted by Admin on June 6, 2009

by Josh Ray

When looking at All-American good guys in the MWR coverage area, they don’t come any more talented or well-received than “Serial Thriller” Shane Rich.  The former All American Pro Wrestling  (AAPW) Heavyweight Champion, Rich has carved a reputation in Illinois as being one of the best.  Looking at the Rich’s life, it’s easy to see why he is thought of highly in the Midwest independent pro wrestling community.

Initial Inspiration

Rich was four-years-old when he first noticed pro wrestling.  He watched the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) on cable television before it transformed into what became World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and while most wrestling fans in his age group would say they were most influenced by wrestling legend “Nature Boy” Ric Flair, Rich gives the credit to one of Flair’s greatest rivals: “Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.

“I loved martial arts and Bruce Lee as a youngster, so Steamboat fit what I was looking for in a wrestling hero,” said Rich.

In the mind of the “Serial Thriller” both Flair and Steamboat complimented each other in style and personality.  It’s easy to see this philosophy shine in Shane Rich’s personality when comparing him to three of his most recent rivals:  “Homicidal” Steven Davis, “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt, and “Modern Day Viking” Shawn Shultz.  He couldn’t be more different then any of them, and that translates into happy fans and competitive matches.  When confronted with this comparative observation, Rich smiled.

“Just thinking back (on Steamboat and Flair) puts a smile on my face.  Their matches were just so intense that you would never have said that they were only putting on a show.”

Other early inspirations were numerous and diverse, including Bret Hart, Sting, Ultimate Warrior, Brian Pillman, AJ Styles, Rey Mysterio Jr., and Juventud Guerrera.  Rich describe each individual and his reasons for them inspiring him, and a common theme emerged.  Rich naturally migrated toward tough, high-impact individuals with strong personalities and a certain unique quality that placed them above the rest in their time.  These are qualities he continues to hold dear to this very day.

Fitness Fanatic

With a few younger uncles encouraging him due to his love of pro wrestling, Rich started working out when he was six-years-old.  They told him at a young age that in order to make it big in wrestling he would have to be big and in shape.  Heeding their advice, Rich started small by riding his bicycle and lifting small weights with one of his uncles.

“I was much too small for the olympic sized bar bell that my Uncle Kevin had, so he put together some dumb bells for me to use when I was at his house,” Rich explained.

Not one to limit himself, Rich did sit-ups, pushups, hindu squats, and other exercises even when not at his uncle’s house.  This continued until he got his hands on the best weight bench at fifteen years of age.

“I’ve been addicted to bodybuilding and fitness ever since,” added Rich.

Early Training

In 2000 at the age of seventeen, Shane Rich started training with “Homicidal” Steven Davis.  Within months of starting his official training to becoem a professional wrestler, he started wrestling on a local level for Attitude Championship Wrestling (ACW) and National Wrestling Coalition (NWC).  This is where the base of Rich’s wrestling talent came from.  During this nearly two-year period, Rich wrestled every weekend and trained for five days every week with Steven Davis at the ACW training facility.  This hard work and dedication combined with his committment to physical fitness set the tone for “Serial Thriller” wrestling career.

When asked about his most memorable matches from the early days, Rich quickly replied with one name:  “Homicidal” Steven Davis.

He added, “We started out together and in a way became the Flair and Steamboat of the Midwest during that time.  Then, just like now, we beat the tar out of each other and were always willing to go that extra mile to entertain the people while still staying true to the old school mentality of pro wrestling.”

Rich has wrestled for many other wrestling promotions, including Rampage Championship Wrestling, NWA Tennessee and Old School Wrestling in Kentucky.  It stands to reason that he will wrestle for many more in the years to come.

The Air Force

Some might expect that a young two-year veteran of independent professional wrestling might develop an attitude.  That wasn’t the case with Rich.  He made the decision to better himself outside of pro wrestling, and in the process develop some very important wrestler attributes.  In November 2001, two short months after the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, he joined the United States Air Force.

“To me, I needed to learn discipline, a good work ethic, and do a service to my country,” Rich clarified.

He continued to work for various independent promotions across the country during this time, building a reputation and keeping himself in great shape.  Rich was once again staying dedicated and pushing himself to get better.

Life as a pro wrestler while working full time for the U.S. Air Force is extremely difficult for Rich, but he takes it in stride.  Some of the benefits from being in the Air Force actually help him pursue his dreams in pro wrestling, since he doesn’t worry about health care, food, or a place to stay.

“In the Air Force, you can never just up and travel to a show that is more than 8 hours away,” said Rich.  “If I ever got a call to wrestle in Japan, Mexico or elsewhere overseas, the military would say no in a heartbeat.  However, the military has given me discipline, money, education, and most importantly PRIDE.”

Close to a Smackdown!

It was during one of his many travels that he got his biggest break.  In the Fall of 2004 while deployed somewhere in Southwest Asia in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, things started to heat up when Rich met one of the best wrestlers pound-for-pound in pro wrestling, Chris Benoit.  World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) was conducting a meet and greet to support the troops, and Rich jumped at the opportunity to meet Benoit, whom he idolized.

“Basically, I told him that I wanted to some day be as great a wrestler as he was,” Rich said.

His encounter with Benoit proved fortunate, as Benoit smiled and told Rich that he would help him out.  Later in the evening he was introduced to WWE’s Smackdown Vice President, Gary Davis.  Benoit told Davis that Rich wanted to be a wrestler, asking Davis to give Rich his contact information.  Davis onbliged, giving Rich his e-mail address and insturcting Rich to contact him as soon as he landed back in the United States.

Nearly three months later, “Serial Thriller” returned to California, where he was stationed at the time.  He quickly e-mailed Gary Davis, as he was instucted to do.  Shortly thereafter, he had a reply, asking for a good 8×10 promotional picture.  Rich complied with the request and when Wrestlemania rolled around in the Spring (2005), Davis sent him tickets to the “biggest event of the year” along with a lot of WWE merchandise.

Rich was excited to say the least, and in the Summer was invited to Tennessee to attend one of Tom Pritchard’s training camps.

“I would love to tell you that they signed me on the spot, but they didn’t,” said Rich.  “After the camp was over, I went back to California and was never contacted again.  I re-enlisted (into the Air Force) and took an assignment back home in Illinois.”

New Home

Rich still hasn’t let up on his committment to being a professional wrestler.  Upon returning home, Rich has been heavily involved in All American Pro Wrestling (AAPW) and IWA Productions (IWAP).  After battles with former trainer “Homicidal” Steven Davis as part of one of the most intense feuds of recent history, Rich claimed the top prize in AAPW, defeating Davis to become the new AAPW Heavyweight Champion.  On top of his training and independent wrestling work schedule, Rich is still in the Air Force and attends McKendree University, where he is working on his bachelors degree in business administration and marketing.

His biggest connection to Illinois, though, is his eight-year-old son, Christian.

“To me, there is nothing more important than taking care of him,” Rich said.

His son was his main reason for relocating back to Illinois when he re-enlisted.  Rich reflected that he wasn’t a part of Christian’s life enough in the first four years of his life, but that he has made up for lost time since returning to Illinois.  His son was born when Rich was only seventeen years old, and Rich credits his birth for making him realize he needed to grow up.

“It made me realize that it was time to step out into the world and be responsible,” said Rich.  “It has been a great reward to watch him grow up.”

The Future

Rich feuded and battled some of the best in the area, including Steven Davis, Shawn Shultz, Jeremy Wyatt, Tracy Smothers, and Edmund McGuire, but what is in store for “Serial Thriller” in the months and years to come.

In Shane’s own words:

“I am very happy with working the indies for the moment.  It gives me a flexible schedule and allows me to work with young, undiscovered talent.  It’s a great reward for me at the moment.”

Former AAPW Heavyweight Champion.

Former AAPW Heavyweight Champion.

In five years, Rich hopes to be a big part of the independent wrestling scene not just in the Midwest, but across the nation.  As humble as they come, Rich acknowledges that due to his current situation in the military and with school, larger promotions in Japan, Mexico, and the U.S. are further down the road.  That isn’t to say that the next level of success will never come, though.  “Serial Thriller” Shane Rich is one of the absolute best that the area has to offer and success is always within reach for a man with his dedication, desire, committment, and work ethic.

One of his idols, Rich would love to have at least one match with AJ Styles.  Another Total Nonstop Action (TNA) wrestler that Rich would like to go one-on-one with is “Cowboy” James Storm.

“It’d be a hilarious slobber knocker,” claims Rich.

Others that Rich wants to wrestle already have ties to the Midwest.  On top of the list are Mike Sydal and Issan Hadeev.

The future is bright for “Serial Thriller” Shane Rich, and Missouri Wrestling Revival is proud to shine a spotlight on him!

Pro Wrestling Next Recap 5-14-2009 Plus Mark Sterling vs. Tyler Black This Friday in Davenport Iowa

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 3, 2009

PWN June 5th

By Brian “Flair” Kelley

Wrestling fans I have to apologize to you for the amount of work that I have not had a chance to do with MWR as of late. This recap will not be as thorough as I would like and my pictures are at my home computer and I am out of town for the moment so I can not add them, but with a PPV talent filled matches that PWN will have this Friday I felt the urge to share with you thoughts from the last show and encourage you to make the trip to Davenport.

I was thrilled to get an invite to Pro Wrestling Next located in Davenport, Iowa to check out a phenomenal card on May 15th. Some of the most talented wrestlers in the country work for this upstart promotion. Pro Wrestling Next recently took over Scott County Wrestling in a battle of the two promotions and this was one of their very first cards under the PWN banner.

Thanks to PWN I was able to get some great interviews that I will share with you to go along results from Craig at the PWN message board I am going to give you the recap from an exciting night of wrestling that saw ROH Superstars Tyler Black and Jimmy Jacobs, former WWE Star Zach Gowan. PWN also boast some of the great tag teams with The Phoenix Twins, Zero Gravity, Hybrids and The Northstar Express. Also on the card was top young talent like Juice Robinson, Krotch, Hunter Mathews, Shane Hollister and Arik Cannon. Main event match Danny Daniels and The Mississippi Madman for the PWN title all show that PWN is one of the premier promotions in the Midwest.

Before the show started, Mark Storm announced that Pro Wrestling NEXT was an official affiliate of the National Wrestling Alliance!

In the opening match of the evening, Zero Gravity and Samuray Del Sol def. Nick Brubaker and The Hybrids in an impressive high flying match. Del Sol looked especially impressive in his PWN debut.

Mark Storm came out to the ring and former SCW Senior Executive Jake Ryder followed shortly behind. Storm announced that he was keeping a majority of the SCW roster as part of his staff. Jake assumed that meant he still had a job too, but Storm cleared that right up when he officially fired Jake Ryder. Jake asked Storm what he was suppose to do. Storm said that Super Target was hiring. Security then escorted Ryder out of the building.

“The One Legged Wonder” Zach Gowan defeated Juice Robinson with a moonsault off the top rope.

Missouri Wrestling Revival caught up with fromer Scott County wrestler Marek Brave who was not happy with one Mark Strom.

Tyler Black and Marek Brave were set to square off, but Brave said that he didn’t agree to compete against Black and that he was going to do it his way and introduced his partner making it a 2-on-1 match, Ring of Honor star Jimmy Jacobs. Just as Jacobs and Brave were about to strike, Krotch’s music hit and we were treated to a surprise tag match.

Tyler Black and Krotch defeated Jimmy Jacobs and Marek Brave when Jacobs and Brave had an argument that led to Jacobs giving Brave a DDT and leaving him. Brave has certainly has his fair share of humility over the last few months. It’ll be interesting to see how he bounces back.

QC Champion Hunter Matthews came to the ring ready to wrestle Krotch in their scheduled QC Title Match, but since Krotch had already competed, he could not compete in the QC Title Match. When Matthews thought he didn’t have to defend, Mark Storm announced that he would have an opponent and it would be his longtime rival, Dewey Dawson.

Hunter Matthews defeated. Dewey Dawson with a top rope piledriver. This match was all over the place. Near the end, Dawson grabbed one of the merchandise tables full of DVDs, placed Matthews on the table over the DVDs and delivered a frog splash from the top rope to the outside!

Jordan McEntire defeated Knight Wagner and Mia Martinez

Shane Hollister defeated Arik Cannon to retain the NWA Iowa State Championship in a fantastic match that had the crowd on the edge of their seat

The Phoenix Twins and The Northstar Express went to a Double DQ as things got out of control. These two teams will meet again on June 5th and you, the fans can pick the stipulation!

Mississippi Madman prior to his war with Danny Daniels talks to Dubray Tallman from MWR.

In the main event, Danny Daniels defeated The Mississippi Madman to become the new PWN Champion when a masked man ran in and distracted Madman long enough for Daniels to put the former champ through a table and getting the pin.

On Friday, June 5th, PWN presents “The Next Show” and right here, fan have the opportunity to vote for what they want to see! Each link will lead you to a poll where you have the opportunity to vote for the option you like best! Vote as much as you’d like and keep check back as more polls will be opening soon! Ring of Honor World Champion Jerry Lynn is a hit in Kansas.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 1, 2009

Lynn and Gaberlia

Ring of Honor World Champion Jerry Lynn and Gaberil Anthony Price

Ring of Honor World Champion Jerry Lynn has had many victories throughout his career. This past Saturday he was able to achieve another one at NWA Dynamo Pro Wrestling against one of the Midwest finest in Mark Sterling. Lynn can boast victories that many wrestlers can only dream of, World Championships came when he defeated Nigel McGuinness for the ROH Championship or winning the ECW Championship October 1, 2000.

His legacy in this writers eyes will not be the final hand of the referee coming down for the 3 count in any of his matches or one of the many moves that he is able to pull out of nowhere to excite the crowd and put his opponent in deep trouble. No, it was watching how Jerry Lynn smiled from the time I walked in the building from the time his match was through. Sitting at the merchandise table Lynn signed autographs and took pictures with anyone and everyone. Every time Lynn smiled while he thanked them for coming to the show.

I spoke to many fans during the evening, fans young and old were thrilled with the action in the ring and common theme was with everyone was how great it was to meet Jerry Lynn. “ What a great guy he is” was just one comment while another inspiring wrestler told me “ Jerry Lynn is one of the reasons I am wanting to be in the ring.

My girlfriend Dubray was taking pictures for the MWR site when a 6 year old boy named Gaberil Anthony Price asked to have his picture taken with her because he thought she was a Diva or one of the wrestlers. She graciously let him know that she was just with MWR but kindly took her picture with him. Jerry Lynn himself took the time to go up to have his picture taken with Gaberil who was confined in a wheelchair. During the show his parents sat in the front row along with Gaberil and cheered the good guys and yes they booed the wrestlers who deserved it. During intermission they showed us the picture they had taken with their camera of Gaberil and Jerry Lynn. When I got the picture sent to me via an e-mail they said that “He had a great time meeting all the wrestlers especially Jerry Lynn.”

Once again wrestling proved to me that the bond between their fans and the wrestlers themselves is incomparable to any other sports. Jerry Lynn may be a World Champion wrestler today but when those days are gone, Lynn will be remembered by this writer and the fans of NWA Dynamo Gym as a wrestler that cared for the fans and because of that he will be not forgotten.

I leave with you pictures from Angie Vo at the NWA Dynamo Show.

HVW ‘Peace and Blood’ May 9 arena report

Posted by reimaginejournalism on May 31, 2009

By Kari Williams

In Granite City, IL at the River’s Edge Complex, High Voltage Wrestling (HVW) put on nine matches for the 115 fans in attendance. From debuts to title defenses to a challenge from Absolute Wrestling Radio, this show was packed from top to bottom.

Alexander Rudloph made his impressive debut against Max Archer. Barely giving Archer a chance to breathe, Rudolph pummeled and absolutely punished his much smaller opponent. The brutality elicited from the newcomer surpassed that of Archer, who took a beating both inside and outside the ring. Rudolph easily pinned Archer for the victory.

TNT Keny G then came to ringside to introduce another new member of the HVW roster, his daughter, Santana. Before Keny could so much as state his daughter’s name, “Thee” Brandon Espinosa and “Irresistably Flawless” Brandon Aarons, B.A.B.E.WATCH, appeared to stir up some trouble. Aarons complimented Santana and made suggestive comments while advancing toward her as Keny attempted to block Aarons.

Espinosa then hit Keny from the side and the two began attacking Keny until Juice Robinson made the save. As B.A.B.E.WATCH returned to the locker room, Keny announced that Aarons and a female partner of his choosing would face Robinson and Santana on Aug. 15 at the next HVW show.

A guantlet match took place next, as Mark Smart announced that he saw Rick Fuller’s gauntlet at the previous show and believed he could dominate oncomers just the same.

Michael Sain, Cabal, Shawn Allen and the Fish Farmer all answered the challenge—and they all walked away, leaving Smart writhing in pain. Smart tried his best to maintain an advantage, but his opponents had the wherewithall to attack Smart at opportune moments.

Eric Allen, Eric Fantabulous and Hunter Matthews wrestled an impressive triple threat match. Early on, Matthews seemed reluctant to insert himself in the bout and Allen and Fantabulous fought it out for a while. However, Allen and Matthews teamed up in an attempt to eliminate Fantabulous from the equation.

The desire to win soon took over, and all three men fought for themselves. Filled with multiple near falls and impressive maneuvers, these three men put everything on the line. In the end, Allen pulled out a victory over Matthews with a quick roll up.

The Bandana Mafia’s “Notorious E.V.A.N.” Evan Gelistico took on Michael Sain in the following contest. Gelistico started strong, knocking Sain out of the ring and proceeding to fly over the top rope onto the dazed Sain. Gelistico then brought the match back in the ring and continued to control the match until Sain’s anger overcame him. Gelistico fought valiantly against the infuriated Sain, but Sain emerged victorious.

The Pro Wrestling Entertainment (PWE) Tag Team Champions Zero Gravity, CJ Esparza and Brett Gakiya, put their belts on the line against The Hooligans. Esparza and Gakiya started the bout off with highflying intensity, clearing the ring of their opponents.

The fast-paced risk-takers met the more grounded Hooligans in an impressive bout that could have gone either way. Using their blunt force and tag team skill, the Hooligans cut off the ring and blocked Esparza from tagging Gakiya for a large portion of the bout, almost causing them to win. However, the referee disqualified the Hooligans for using steel chairs on Zero Gravity, allowing Esparza and Gakiya to retain their recently won belts.

Following the successful title defense, Absolute Wrestling Radio Co-host Matt Kreuger addressed HVW fans and “Future” Donovan Ruddick, specifically. Kreuger explained that he called Keny while on the air, forcing him to put his champion’s belt on the line against Former Wrestler and Current Absolute Wrestling Radio Co-host Mark Bland.

Ruddick emerged at ringside with Magic Man by his side and proceeded to attack Kreuger and literally threw him out of the building. HVW Livewire Champion Kahagas then walked through the door through which Kreuger was thrown, causing Keny to announce that on Aug. 15, fans would witness a Falls Count Anywhere match for the HVW Heavyweight Title between Kahagas and Ruddick.

After intermission, Shawn Allen took on the Bandana Mafia’s “Point Blank” Pierre Abernathy. Allen’s brutal offense slowed Abernathy in the beginning, especially after Allen wrapped Abernathy’s knee around the ring post. The ever-valiant Abernathy slowly powered his way out of defeat with Gelistico’s ringside support, and soon, nobody could stop him. Point Blank’s determination overcame Allen’s strength, locking in a win for the Bandana Mafia.

Aarons and Espinosa wrestled The Hybrids, Jason Lyte and Curtis Gilly, in the following contest. From the moment B.A.B.E.WATCH made their way to the ring, the fans relentlessly harrassed them, setting up their mindset for the entire match. Despite pyschological distractions, Aarons and Espinosa put up a tremendous fight against their opponents.

Their unique offense and use of illegal tactics nearly propelled them to a win. However, The Hybrids focused in on a miscommunication between their opponents—Aarons inadvertantly superkicked Espinosa—and walked away victorious. After the match, the Hooligans appeared from the locker room and attacked the Hybrids.

Robinson, accompanied by Santana, wrestled Nick Brubaker in a fabulous bout. Before the two could even lock up, Aarons attacked Robinson. That distraction allowed Brubaker to start the match off in dramatic fashion, but Robinson quickly found his niche in the friendly competition.

The two put on a show for the fans, and with multiple nearfalls and close encounters, it was hard to tell who would come out victorious. Robinson ended up walking away with the one, two, three, after which, Brubaker attacked Robinson and turned on Zero Gravity and Robinson.

The always energetic and flamboyant Gary Jay challenged Kahagas for the HVW Livewire Championship. From the get-go, Kahagas had his hands full with Jay’s unpredictable offense. Once the champion grounded Jay, he controlled the match.

However, Jay was not one to be discounted, as he gave his all, and nearly won the Livewire title on more than one occasion. Kahagas’ power became too much for Jay, and he succumbed. Although Jay did not leave Granite City with the championship, he left with the respect of the fans, and Kahagas as well. One could argue that another title shot lies in the near future for Jay.

In the main event, Ruddick put his HVW Heavyweight Championship on the line against Rebelucha. As, arguably, the best match of the evening, Ruddick and Rebelucha held nothing back. The champion used his power and ferocity in an attempt to will Rebelucha away from victory.

Still, Rebelucha pressed on and had Ruddick teetering on the edge of defeat. The challenger’s distinctive skill set caught Ruddick off guard and nearly cost him the belt. In spite of this, when Rebelucha attempted to lock in a triangle choke, Ruddick’s power became too much to bear. Moments later, Ruddick put Rebelucha down for the count with his border toss finisher.

Stay tuned to Missouri Wrestling Revival and highvoltagewrestling.tk for more information on HVW’s Aug. 15 show.

PWE returns to Springfield, IL on Saturday, June 20th at the VFW HALL located at 2211 Old Jacksonville Rd.

The main event of this awesome card will feature the PWE Champion “Bloody” Harker Dirge, who won the title in a match against WWE superstar Al Snow on April 4, this time against the power and intensity of “The Japanese Nightmare” Kahagas.

Both of these ring generals have wrestled throughout the United States, and even internationally, and now they will meet face to face for the first time in Springfield, Illinois on Saturday, June 20th!

Missouri Wrestling Revival was able to catch up with the Tokyo Monster Kahagas and TNT Keny G who had these words to say to Pro Wrestling Entertainments Champion “Bloody “ Harker Dirge

That is not all as the PWE Tag Team titles will be on the line.
PWE Champions Zero Gravity vs. The Hooligans

PWE tag team Champions Zero Gravity will defend their titles against The Hooligans. This match was a battle of speed of Zero Gravity verses the savage brutality of the Hooligans the first time that they met in Granite City at High Voltage Wrestling.

Zero Gravity was able to walk out the building that evening with the tag team belts when the Hooligans were disqualified when Devin Cutter attacked the referee. Who will walk out with the PWE Tag Team Championship will be hard to guess but it will be a match that you will NOT want to miss.

ALL AGES are welcome, and KIDS 5 & UNDER GET IN FREE!
Adults only $8
