IHW Sept. 5 Arena Report

Posted by reimaginejournalism on October 3, 2009

By Kari Williams

At the VFW Hall in Dupo, IL, 88 witnessed deception and defeat, feuds boil over and utter chaos all around. From the opening tag team contest to the Pro Wrestling Entertainment (PWE) Championship match in the main event, every match left fans wondering what would happen next.

The Hooligans—Mason, Devin and Neil “Diamond” Cutter—and the Submission Squad of Pierre Abernathy, Evan Gelistico and Gary Jay continued their hate-filled feud, which has gone all over the Midwest in countless promotions. Before the bell even rang, the two teams brawled through the crowd, causing fans to scatter. As they made their way back in the ring, the Squad took control with their fast-paced, high energy offense. But the Hooligans’ dirty tactics—which helped them wrestle the LWA Tag Team Championships away from the Squad—soon dominated the bout. Neither team would be deterred, and they continued in a an exceedingly competitive way. The Hooligans etched out a win, due to their underhanded tactics.

Fan favorite Billy McNeil went at the despised Sean Vincent in a thrilling bout of athleticism and high-flying acrobatics. McNeil gained the early advantage, causing Vincent to back off and take a minute to organize a plan of action. Vincent’s rage soon kicked in, and the match exploded into a and abundantly competitive match up which resulted in McNeil crashing and burning after launching toward a not-so-unaware Vincent. After the misstep on McNeil’s behalf, Vincent acted like an animal going in for the kill. Despite McNeil’s valiant effort—and full-fledged fan support—Vincent’s attack was too brutal. Vincent pulled out the win in a pinning combination with his feet on the ropes.

Brandon Aarons came out to talk about his match later in the evening against PWE Heavyweight Champion “Bloody” Harker Dirge and his victory in the St. Louis Wrestling Invitational Tournament. However, before Aarons could finish his ‘acceptance speech,’ “Peoria Pride Champion” Eric Allen—the man Aaron defeated to win the tournament—took it upon himself to interrupt Aarons, saying that “Brandon Aarons is the new standard…and I’m sick of it!” Allen then attacked Aarons, prompting Shorty Biggs to come to Aarons’ defense.

Cabal and Graves took on Shawn Almighty and Ian Storm in the second tag team contest of the night. Fans took an instant liking to Almighty and Storm, which appeared to aid them in their battle against their unpredictable opponents. Storm and Almighty worked extremely well together, but the overwhelming strength and tag team knowledge that Cabal and Graves had allowed them to cut the ring in half and alienate Almighty from Storm. The moment that Almighty finally had Storm within reach for a tag, Storm jumped down from the ring apron with an evil smirk slowly spreading across his face. Storm then walked off and left Almighty to fend for himself against the two behemoths. Cabal and Graves made quick work of the deserted Almighty.

Mr. Late Night emerged from the back to introduce Napalm to the crowd prior to Napalm’s No Disqualification match with Mephisto. These two hardcore enthusiasts did not wait long to let their brutal sides emerge. Napalm delivered the first strike with a ‘wet floor’ sign and steel chair, and Mephisto followed suit with chairs, a ladder and thumbtacks—a staple of the No DQ match, it seems. They brutalized each other, and a pivotal moment occurred when Napalm struck Mephisto with a stop sign from under the ring. However, this only seemed to enrage Mephisto, who then brought a table into the mix. The bout ended shortly thereafter, when Mephisto speared Napalm into the table.

During intermission, it looked as though the wrestlers would come out to sign autographs for fans, but the Hooligans and the Submission Squad had different ideas. The two teams brawled yet again, and had to be forced to the back by security.

Back into the action the cocky Eric Allen returned to the ring to take on the popular Short Biggs. Biggs opened the match strong by dominating the first six minutes of the contest. When Biggs hit a vicious belly to belly suplex, Allen wisely retreated outside the ring, but Biggs kept the pressure on him by punishing him outside the ring before he threw him back into it.

Finally Allen was able to get some offense in……for a moment then Biggs was back in control. The turning point came when MR Late Night made his way to the ring. Allen had Biggs reeling and the crowd attempted to pump op the “Don Mega” by having the house rockin with “Shorty” chants. The motivation must have helped because Biggs delivered a belly to back suplex. MR Late Night pulled Allen out of the ring to give him a moment but went the action came back in the ring Biggs was still in control. Mr. Late Night distracted the ref and Allen tried to hit Biggs with his “Pride of Peroian” Championship belt but Biggs caught it. The Ref had turned and took the belt away from Biggs and administered a warning. Once again MR Late Night got the attention of the ref which allowed Allen to get a cheap shot by hitting Biggs down low too steal the victory.

IWA-Mid South Heavyweight Champion Dingo put his title on the line against Matt Cage, who was hesitant to start the match. After playing to the crow a little bit, Dingo forced Cage to get down to business, and they wrestled one of the most technically sound matches on the card. They matched each other hold for hold, and nearly every high impact move looked as if it would end the bout—but neither man gave in that easily. Dingo’s God-given talent resonated and Cage’s pure mat skill propelled the match to its most exciting moments, as when the two journeyed to the outside, and Dingo allowed fans (who may or may not wrestle for other promotions in the area) to chop Cage. Back in the ring, Cage focused his attack on Dingo’s hand, which he injured attempting to chop Cage but inadvertently hit the ring post. But Dingo’s resiliency and fight pushed him forward, and he walked away with the victory and the IWA-MS Heavyweight Championship.

Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s #445 on the PWI 500 “Thee” Brandon Espinosa had his hands full against “Spoiled” Steven Kennedy and Max Archer in a triple threat. Although a relatively short match, all three men got in formidable offense. Espinosa with his enziguri kick from the top turnbuckle, Kennedy with the second-rope moonsault and Archer delivered the most devastating blow when he attempted to powerbomb Kennedy, who happened to have Espinosa on his shoulders as well. Despite valiant efforts by all three men, Archer opportunistically caught Espinosa in a roll-up pinning combination for the shocking win.

PWE Champion “Bloody” Harker Dirge.(Photo Credit Michael R Van Hoogstraat)

Aarons’ biggest test to date came in the form of PWE Champion Dirge.

As the underdog, the crowd rooted for Aarons and urged him toward victory. Dirge’s more grounded style complimented Aarons’ faster-paced style. Aarons took a lot of high risks, and although not all of them paid off, it proved that he will do whatever necessary to win championship gold.

Dirge’s vicious beating instilled more fortitude into the young competitor, rather than causing him to back down—in contrast to what one might suspect. Approximately half-way through the match, Eric Allen came out from the back and sat down to watch the match progress. Both Dirge and Aarons scored many nearfalls, and at the point where it looked as though Aarons would win his first major championship, Allen pulled the referee out of the ring. This distraction allowed for Dirge to spear Aarons and retain the belt. In the aftermath, Allen attacked Aarons and Biggs yet again came to Aarons’ aid.

J.R. Timmons interviews “The Full Blooded Irishmen” Lucky Dane

Posted by flairwhoooooo on October 1, 2009

093009-luckyback

As you may or may not know, IWA Productions, centered in south-eastern Illinois, is holding its October event, Saturday Night Fright on October 17th at the IWAP Wrestling Center, 531 S. Whittle Avenue, right about the Knights of Columbus. Among the many matches to be shown there, there will be a dog collar match between the leader of the Full Blooded Irishmen, Lucky Dane, and the Knucklehead of pro-wrestling, Curly. I had a moment before this week’s Wednesday Night Wrestling FREE wrestling show to sit down with Lucky Dane and discuss his feud with Curly, from his point of view.

====

J.R. Timmons: I’m here with none other than Lucky Dane. Kucky thanks for coming in on such short notice. I know you’ve got a lot of things going on right now with your feud with Curly, and I want to thank you for sitting down and talking with us. On July 25th at IWA Productions Freedom Brawl, you handed me an envelope…

Lucky Dane: Yep…

J.R. Timmons: .. an envelope stating your intentions, stating… I guess you would say, your manifesto….

Lucky Dane: Well, if you remember, when I handed you the envelope, what did I specifically say? I said ‘Watch tonight… and see who wins this match.’ Because I specifically said that if Homicidal Steven Davis wins this match, you need to open this envelope. If Curly wins, destroy it. And the simple fact of the matter was, I was giving Curly the benefit of the doubt. Now, I look back, and I don’t think he deserved the benefit of a doubt. I came out here for fifteen years, night after night after night after night, putting on a show for these fans, in arenas all over the states, Missouri Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Iowa, you name it I’ve been through the Midwest in this, and I heard them chant my name, and that night I walked out, I wanted to see what would happen, as I came out with Curly. And here’s this cartoonesque enigma who rolls around the ring like some rapid dog to some stupid three stooges theme and they [the fans] were chanting ‘Curly’, instead of ‘Lucky’. That’s why I gave you the envelope, and that’s why Curly had to be dealt Justice.

J.R. Timmons: You are of course talking about when you hit Curly in that heavyweight championship fight with a steel chair.

Lucky Dane: I’ll readily admit that I hit him with that steel chair. He deserved every inch of that chair upside his head.

J.R. Timmons: And because of that ‘justice’, now, on October 17th, here in Olney, we have you… Lucky Dane versus Curly in a dog collar match. What’s going through your mind right now in the weeks before Saturday Night Fright?

Lucky Dane: Well, let me explain this, this goes back to three weeks ago. This is my first day back in this arena, because I served a twenty one day suspension for a steel chain that magically appeared in the ring, like my magical lucky charms appear, and they said I used it on Curly. The referee turned around… Whatever! I serve a twenty one day suspension. You know what that is, that’s money out of my pocket when I go out and earn my living around here. Twenty one days I didn’t work in this arena, I’m back tonight. So, that’s the first thing we need to understand about that. Curly better watch it, cause he’s got something coming to him tonight, I’ll guarantee that to you. Second, he wants a dog collar match? I’ve give him any kind of dog collar match he wants. I’ve been doing this for fifteen years, and I’ll estimate that I’ve had between twenty and twenty five dog collar matches, and you can ask Homicidal Steven Davis, I’ve fought with him, you can ask Brian the Lion, I’ve fought with him, and you can go down the list of all the people that I’ve ever been in a dog collar match with, and in my entire career, I never lost ONE dog collar match. So, Curly wants to step into MY backyard for a dog collar match. It’s on Curly, I’ll bring the dog collar, We’ll do this on October 17th

J.R. Timmons: Well, thank you very much for your time. And on a personal note, I do want to say thank you for standing up and saying that you ARE a professional wrestler, and not just an entertainer, and for bringing that traditional style of wrestling back to all of the fans.

Lucky Dane: See that’s the difference… I’m an old-school professional wrestler. I’m out here to beat people up and grab a paycheck. I’m not going to come out here and flip-flop around the ring like the young guys do, I’m not going to roll around in the ring like a rabid dog like Curly does, for people to laugh at me? What are they thinking? They don’t have the respect of ANYONE in this arena. I’ve got the respect of every wrestler and everyone in the back… because I’m not a Cartoon, Curly. The fact is, I’m a professional wrestler, and I carry myself with that dignified with that level of respect for the people around me. So, you’re not going to see me entertain. I’m a professional wrestler, not an entertainer, and that’s what I’m here to do, beat people up, and you’ll see that on October 17

J.R. Timmons: Thank you.

Lucky Dane: Thank you.

3XWrestling Presents Action-Packed Halloween Horror III Event

3XWrestling Presents Action-Packed Halloween Horror III Event
Iowa’s Top Wrestling Company Holds Premier Fall Showcase

DES MOINES, Iowa – After performing in front of a record crowd in September, Des Moines-based 3XWrestling (3XW) once again invades the Des Moines Social Club to hold Halloween Horror III. The stacked Oct. 16 event features three title matches and a battle royal, among many others.

In a first for 3XW, the main event of Halloween Horror III sees 3XW Heavyweight champion “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt, fresh off a victory over internationally-recognized wrestling star Al Snow, defend his championship against a challenger determined by a battle royal earlier in the evening. Never before has a 3XW Heavyweight champion had to defend his championship against the challenge of a same-night battle royal winner.

“I don’t care who I have to defend against in October – whether it’s Devin Carter, Jimmy Rockwell, Mark Sterling, Rory Fox, that punk Tyler Cook or even some fool from the crowd – I’ll beat down anyone who dares challenge me for my title!” said a confident Wyatt.

Heading into the Oct. 16 event, Wyatt, who is widely considered the best wrestler in the Midwest among wrestling fans, has defeated a who’s who of professional wrestling in 2009, including Al Snow and Ring of Honor stars Jerry Lynn, Tyler Black, Davey Richards and Sonjay Dutt. Wyatt has only lost a handful of times in 3XW in the past four years.

The 3XW Tag Team titles will also be defended as current champions The High Flyers (Mike Sydal and “The Unbreakable” Zach Thompson) battle Sexy and Smooth (A.J. Smooth and “The Canadian Sex Icon”Ryan Slade) in a highly-anticipated tag team attraction.

In a rematch two months in the making, “The Viking Warrior” Kraig Keesaman, the 3XW Pure Wrestling champion, puts his 14-month undefeated streak on the line against the challenge of former three-time Pure Wrestling champion Tyler Cook in what should be a classic hard-hitting battle.

Local powerhouse fan favorite Maddog McDowell will battle Mark Sterling, a vicious technical wrestling master, in singles competition.

Among those also competing on Oct. 16 are 3XW Cruiserweight champion Casanova, “Delicious” Devin Carter, “The Right Price” Aaron Masterson, “The Laotian Sensation” Ricky Kwong, “Torturous” Tony Sly, Brady A. Dezire, Rory Fox and more!

Doors open at 7 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. start time. The Des Moines Social Club is located at 1408 Locust St. in Des Moines.

Founded in 2005, 3XWrestling, a Des Moines-based organization, has performed in front of thousands of fans across Iowa and been featured on Iowa Public Radio and in publications including Juice and Cityview. 3XW events are held monthly in Des Moines.

3XW and its performers are also heavily involved with charity work. 3XW recently joined forces with Blockbuster Video and heavy metal band-on-the-rise Dark Mirror to hold a fundraiser event for local firefighters.

Last February, one-legged wrestling star Zach Gowen competed in 3XW and helped raise over $10,000 to help the family of a young man whose leg was amputated due to his battle with cancer. All proceeds from that event we’re given to the family to offset medical costs, with every wrestler performing on a volunteer basis.

For more information about 3XWrestling, including details on purchasing advance tickets, please visit www.3XWrestling.com. Card subject to change.

Come find out why 3XW is the best kept secret in Des Moines-area family-friendly entertainment!

The Hooligans put a bounty on the Submission Squad.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on September 29, 2009

When the Hooligans (Devin and Mason Cutter)  contacted MWR to send out a message, little did we know that we what we got ourselves involved in. The Hooligans (Devin and Mason Cutter) and the Submission Squad (Pierre Abernathy and Evan Gelistico) have battled each other throughout the Midwest at Independent Hardcore Wrestling, Lethal Wrestling Alliance, Great American Wrestling and High Voltage Wrestling. The Submission Squad had the early advantage by defeating the Hooligans at IHW on  June 13th then again at their home turf LWA.

Things got ugly at Pro Wrestling Next when The Hooligans shocked the Submission Squad by not only by beating them but taking home the LWA Tag team titles. Since then, the two have been split in non title defenses, once at GAW in the first round for their Tag team titles, then again at IHW.

What team, if any, will take the Hooligans up on their offer to win the Hooligans’ money by taking out the Submission Squad?  While we were video taping, little did we realize that the misfit of the family Neil Diamond Cutter was making his presence known in the background.

This feud is quickly turning into a 2009 feud of the year candidate. You will not want to miss the next installment in this battle for tag team supremacy. On Oct. 10, The Hooligans return home to High Voltage Wrestling in Granite City, IL to face their rivals, Abernathy and Gelistico, to determine the first ever HVW Tag team Champions.

The Professional Wrestler in the World of Sports Entertainment By Matt Murphy: Introduction

Dedicated to Derek Stone, James Grizzle, and Dave Marquez, for taking a chance on me.

By Matt Murphy

After four years of diligent work, Tony Willis finally created the perfect barbecue sauce. It was delicious, the perfect blend of ingredients and preparation, and it left an aftertaste you’d hate to waste with a stick of gum after dinner. Tony never felt so confident in his life. His sauce was better than anything on the shelves, so there was no way he was leaving Kansas City without a life-changing victory.

Tony quit his job, emptied his savings account, and bought a classy suit and a briefcase. After his plane landed at Kansas City International, he drove his rented luxury sedan to Kemper Arena, where he entered his creation into the Great American Barbecue contest. He was certain that the grand prize, $100,000 cash and licensing deal with a major condiment company, was waiting for him.

Tony imagined his sauce flying off the shelves in every grocery store in the world and thought about how the $100,000 prize would change his life.

There was no doubt among GAB attendees that Tony’s sauce was the tastiest. Even his competitors were certain that Tony’s sauce would best theirs when the judges announced their decision. When one of the judges stepped up to the podium, Tony straightened his tie.

“The winner of the $100,000 Great American Barbecue contest … Elmer Billings,” the judge announced. Tony went numb. He risked everything he had and didn’t know why his sauce wasn’t chosen. Elmer’s sauce tasted like pancake syrup and mustard. Tony did his best to maintain his composure while Elmer posed with the winning sauce and an oversized $100,000 check for Condiments Illustrated.

Angus Larue, the sauce master for the leading condiment maker in the United States, tapped Tony on the shoulder. “Come with me for a minute,” Angus said.

In a corner of the room, Angus sympathetically handed Tony a beer. “Listen, son,” Angus began, “your sauce was outstanding. If this was a contest to decide whose sauce was the tastiest, you surely would have won, but your sauce didn’t have a name or a slogan. For Chrissake, it was in a Mason jar. How do I sell that?”

“On its flavor!” Tony snapped. “I thought this contest was about quality barbecue sauce, not gimmicks.”

“This contest was about creating a barbecue sauce we can sell,” Angus said. “It’s about marketing. Elmer brought us a barbecue sauce we can market and sell. His label has an American flag and fireworks on it. His slogan, ‘Make Every Day the Fourth of July’, man, that makes people think of barbecues and good times! I can sell that. You’ve gotta draw the customer’s attention, make him buy it in the first place, or he’ll never know how great your sauce is.”

Tony seethed in his rental car on the way to the airport. Damned idiot, he thought of Angus. He doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about.

After a couple of years, Tony gave up his dream of finding riches in the barbecue sauce industry. He sold his great recipe to an upstart burger joint and never made another jar of sauce again. Bitter, he boycotted condiments altogether.

For many professional wrestlers, this story may sound familiar. I’ve heard countless wrestlers tell me how much better they are than most of the guys in WWE today, and a few of them have actually been right. I’ve seen great workers who could do incredible things and had the right physique, but who never got a WWE contract for a variety of reasons. Some had attitude problems, others got married and decided to leave the business, some just never got the exposure to be seen by anybody who could get them signed. In most of those cases, however, the wrestler was seen but did not catch the attention of somebody within WWE who said, “Wow! We could make some money off this guy.”

At a seminar in 2004, I heard WWE’s Tom Pritchard speak to a group of guys about a wrestler named John Walters, an excellent worker best known for his time with Ring of Honor. “He’s very good,” Pritchard said. “I wish we could offer him a contract right now, but there isn’t a spot for him. John’s a great talent, but other than that there’s nothing about him that makes him different from anybody else.”

Too many guys don’t understand that there was only one Dean Malenko for a reason. Malenko was great, but there was only room in this business for one of him. Technically, maybe nobody was his equal, but a major company needs many different flavors to appeal to the masses. How successful would Baskin Robbins be if they only offered one flavor of ice cream?

Does it suck? Probably. Will it change? Not a chance.

Welcome to the age of sports-entertainment.

GAW Photo Recap- Dingo vs. Matt Cage vs. Ian Rotten

Posted by flairwhoooooo on September 25, 2009

By Brian “Flair” Kelley

On August 30th Missouri Wresting Revival was invited to check out Great American Wrestling in Lincoln Illinois. A Sunday show with a main event set to be GAW Champion Matt Cage taking on Dingo. That match alone made me want to go but when we got there more excitement was added when Hardcore Legend Ian Rotten was thrown in the mix.

GAW with a reputation of not being one of the top promotions around, put on a fun show that was highlighted by an exciting 5 way scramble match with two wrestlers in the MWR coverage area Gary Jay and Davey Vega as they went up against a very impressive Markus Crane as well as Johnathan Napier and Christian Rose. All five men put on an exciting match and I hope see them again.

The LWA Tag Team Champions The Hooligans (Devin and Mason Cutter) was in action as they took on their rivals The Submission Squad in a battle that went all around the building. (Pierre Abernathy and Evan Gelistico).

I would like to thank GAW for inviting us to check out them out and we hope to be back in the future. Now without further ado is the photo recap of that show.
