Wrestling at the Chase Great and Friend to the Wrestling Fan Larry Matysik Passes Away

Posted by flairwhoooooo on November 25, 2018

 From Promoter Herb Simmons

It’s with heavy heart this morning that I come to each of you and give you the news that my good friend Larry Matysik has lost the battle. As many know his health has been declining over the past several year. I ask that you keep his wife Pat and Daughter Kelly in your thoughts and prayers as the next few days will be hard for them. I will continue to update you on the arrangements when they are available.

It is so hard to find the words to express my gratitude and respect for the man known as Larry Matysik. I will not lie, I did not have the privilege to grow up listening to Matysik call the Wrestling at the Chase matches as the part in Missouri I grew up I never got any of the Chase programing, I remember the first time that I met him like it was yesterday, he was a special guest of TNT Keny G’s High Risk Wrestling in Granite City. He was only there to meet the fans and during that evening he smiled, shook hands, signed autographs and took pictures with every fan and wrestler that asked. I would be around him for over 100 times in the past 10 years and let me tell you, I never once seen him be disrespectful to anybody.

There is no doubt that Larry Matysik is highly underrated in the wrestling world as one of the All –Time Greats . He worked with NWA President and Wrestling at the Chase Promoter Sam Muchnick as well as WWE Promoter Vince McMahon. He is the author of four books every wrestling fan should own, Wrestling at the Chase: The inside Story of Sam Muchnick, 50 Greatest Pro Wrestlers of All-time, Drawing Heat the Hard Way and Brody The Triumph and Tragedy with his widow, Barbara Goodish. The past several years he has been very instrumental in Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling (SICW) , one of the most successful independent promotions in the country.

I could go on and on but I would like to hammer home the type of person he was. Thanks to my friendship with Promoter Herb Simmons I would become personal friends with the man I will now refer as Larry. My fiancée Dubray Tallman always looked forward to getting a hug, a kiss and photo with him when she attended an event. He was always supportive of Missouri Wrestling Revival, offering up his advice on writing and sharing his views and history on wrestling. When I asked him to please write in my yearbook, he did not hesitate to do so. Back in the day he would send me booking sheets for SICW to help us keep up with the shows and often gave reasons of why the matches were happening. The conversations were so educational each and every time. I remember receiving a call from Larry when my father died with him sending his condolences as well as him asking several times afterwards how I was doing.

We presented Larry with the 2010 Missouri Wrestling Revival Lifetime Award, an obvious choice.

We were so thankful to have Larry in our first series of the MWR Trading card set and with Herb’s blessing we had Larry Matysik day at SICW on July 16th in 2013. Personally, I only have a few regrets in my short time working in wrestling but I wished I would have done commentary with Larry on a match, an honor one of my best friends and the voice of SICW wrestling Drew Abbenhaus enjoyed many times. It was a relief to be around a legend that was not bitter towards the sport of wrestling or the fans. Was he a fan of today’s wrestling? I can’t say that, but I can say that he always appreciated every wrestling fan young and old. He took time to work with aspiring wrestlers looking to become better. He gave to all that he came in contact with.

Today the wrestling world lost one of the good guys. He was a legendary Announcer, a great writer and so much more.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Larry’s family and friends.

Thank you Larry for the memories, we loved you.

I will leave you on a positive note of a short video we did at SICW years ago with Larry, my fiancée Dubray and Herb Simmons wishing the fans a Merry Christmas.

A Night with Larry Matysik Delivers Memories that Will Last a Lifetime.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 21, 2018

By Brian Kelley

When I heard that my friend and the Voice of the Wrestling at the Chase Larry Matsyik was going to be featured as a special guest at Hey Guys Comedy Club I knew I had to be there. The Midwest is very fortunate to have Matysik accessible to fans to still hear stories firsthand of legendary matches and the top stars to ever enter the ring from the days of the territories.

The event was hosted by wrestling historian and comedian Patrick Brandmeyer, whom just so happens to be a longtime supporter of pro wrestling in the Midwest. An added bonus for fans was the fact that WWE Hall of Famer, Cowboy Bob Orton was to be on hand to see his son Nathan Orton open up with hilarious stand-up comedy.  I was pleas able to meet the son of Sam Muchnick, Dr. Richard Muchnick, who came to enjoy the show with wrestling referee Jay King. I was surprised to learn that he was a Doctor and had spent time stitching up the cuts of the stars of the Chase and the Kiel Auditorium.

Matysik has teamed up with his friend Herb Simmons to promote and announce for Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, Illinois while also providing his knowledge and advice to aspiring wrestling for the past four decades. So it was only fitting that Simmons was on stage with Matysik to interview him as the two friends went down memory lane on topics such as Sam Muchnick, Vince McMahon , Mickey Garagiola, Bruno Sammartino, Andre the Giant, Bruiser Brody, Harley Race, Pat O’Connor, the difference between pro wrestling from the past and today.

Larry was also surprised on the night thanks to special guest St. Clair County Chairman Mark Kern who  proclaimed the day as Larry Matysik Day along with a plaque.

At the end of the night Larry was more than happy to take photos, sign autographs and thank his fans and friends for coming on out. I hope that in the future that there will be another night for the fans and myself to enjoy a night with Larry Matysik.

Ricky Cruz & Ron Powers: The Story of a Rivalry

Posted by flairwhoooooo on March 20, 2015

By Patrick Brandmeyer

The tumultuous history between Ron Powers and Ricky Cruz has taken several interesting turns…and it took another turn last month in Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling.

Their story started years before they ever crossed paths in the East Carondelet Community Center. Each man has his own perspective on the situation: Ricky said that Ron deliberately injured his brother in a match in Puerto Rico, ending their dream of competing as a tag team. Ron said that he was a different person at the time and had changed since that era of his wrestling career.

The tension boiled over when Powers dished out a bloody beating to Cruz in the middle of the ring…that kicked off a wild series of matches with the SICW Classic Wrestling Championship at stake. In the end, Cruz walked away with the gold…but Powers never forgot who put that blemish on his record.

The two fought other competitors but their paths seemed to keep crossing at different points. When “Ironman” Ken Kasa cashed in on a promised title shot to steal the title from Cruz, it was Powers’ post-match beating that set the table for Kasa’s actions.

Over time, Powers’ focus changed and the fans started to get behind the veteran’s no-nonsense attitude. That may have touched a nerve with Ricky Cruz…while they may have been on the same side at times, Ricky never forgot about what Powers had done to him in the past. That led Cruz to a spot as guest referee in a grudge match between Powers and Flash Flanagan…Ricky had no love lost for either man, but his more recent issue was with Flanagan.

It seemed like Cruz would call the match right down the middle, but he turned on Powers with a superkick out of nowhere to give Flash the victory. The longtime fan favorite was suddenly hearing boos…he insisted that he hadn’t changed, but the fans’ support of Powers had altered his perception of them. The feud was reignited with the popularity roles reversed, leading to some interesting alliances on either side.

The most interesting alliance was between Ricky Cruz and Travis Cook’s Organization. Despite the fact that it was Cook’s manipulations that led to the end of Ricky’s title reign, Ricky felt they had a common enemy and formed a tenuous partnership with Travis and company. The rival clashed in a loser-leaves-town match and it was the interference of the Travis Cook Organization and Flash Flanagan that led to Powers’ unceremonious exit from SICW.

A few months later, manager Big Daddy brought in a masked newcomer named “Red River Jack”. The powerhouse racked up several impressive victories, but Ricky Cruz and Travis Cook suspected that RRJ wasn’t what he seemed. King Kong Brody had once competed under a hood with the Red River Jack name…and Ron Powers was once a protege of Brody. Cruz and Cook connected the dots and speculated that RRJ was actually Powers.

The war continued with Cruz siding with Cook’s stable against their common enemies…but Travis had made one too many enemies and it all came to a head in December. RRJ’s mask was on the line in a match with Ricky Cruz…and recent Cook rival Jim Cornette was the special guest referee.

On top of that, Jake Dirden was the ringside enforcer to ward off the interference of Cook’s Organization. Promoter Herb Simmons had ruled that if Ron Powers had violated the stipulation of the loser-leaves-town match by competing under the hood, he would be banned from SICW for life.

Jake Dirden with Jim Cornette’s personal weapon of choice.

Chaos ensued as Ken Kasa and Flash Flanagan both got involved in the matchup…Cornette and Cook came to blows and Red River Jack got the win after whacking Cruz with Cornette’s trademark tennis racket. RRJ had retained his mask and Ron Powers made his official return to SICW at the start of 2015…but Travis Cook’s Organization was still intent on proving their point.

In the process, cracks started to form in the alliance between Cook and Ricky Cruz…Cook vowed that Kasa would be champion again, something that didn’t sit well with Ricky. That may have reminded Ricky about the circumstances that led to the end of his own title reign.

During a tag match pitting Cruz and Kasa against Gary Jackson and Jim Hoffarth, Travis Cook tried to interfere but accidentally threw powder in Cruz’s eyes. Once Ricky recovered from the temporary impairment of his vision, he confronted Cook about his actions and then walked away from the match, leaving Kasa to lose in a two-on-one situation. Despite that turn of events, Travis Cook insisted that everything was fine in the Cruz/Cook alliance…and that led to the events of February 21st.

The main event between Red River Jack and Attila Khan turned into all-out pandemonium as Travis Cook’s Organization gang-attacked RRJ. Ken Kasa and new recruit Chris Hargas helped Khan triple-team the masked man while Big Daddy was handcuffed to the ringpost and unable to help. They restrained Jack while Travis called Ricky Cruz to the ring for the honor of removing the mask.

Ricky nearly got the hood off RRJ’s head…but then turned around and attacked the members of Travis Cook’s Organization! At the end of the night, Red River Jack’s identity remained unrevealed and Ricky Cruz stood tall, once again hearing the cheers of the fans…

 photo 86_zpsqnn1gshh.jpg

In the wake of last month’s event, Ricky told promoter Herb Simmons that he had let his issues with Ron Powers/Red River Jack cloud his judgment and led him to associate with the wrong people…he had experienced several changes in his life that had changed his perspective on a lot of things. Despite all of that, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to coexist with his old rival…he is scheduled to team with RRJ and Daniel Eads against the Travis Cook Organization at the next show. One thing is for sure: The story between Ricky Cruz and Ron Powers is far from finished.

Congrats to the 2014 MWR Sexiest Wrestler of the Year- Lucy Mendez

Posted by flairwhoooooo on February 14, 2014

 photo 942576_10152867785280083_463739578_n_zps338d25fb.jpg

We would like to thank all fans that took the time to vote in the 2014 MWR Sexiest Female of the Year voting. This year we featured several of the top women wrestlers in the country. We are exciting and honored that they have supported MWR throughout the years and know that each of these athletes have fans wanting to have more women’s wrestling matches in 2014.

This year the fans came out in the masses to their computers to vote for who was their favorite to be named the 2014 MWR Sexiest Wrestler of the Year.

Without further ado, the female wrestler that received the most votes in one of the biggest weeks in the history of MWR is none other than former 2-time World League Wrestling Female Champion, Metro Pro Wrestling, Dynamo Pro Wrestling, Resistance Pro, 3XWrestling, Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling and StricktlyNsane ProWrestling star Lucy Mendez.

 photo 27_zpsb3d6b27e.jpg

Jake Parnell found out quickly at SICW that if you do not treat Lucy Mendez with respect then she will beat it out of you.

Mendez has been a proven ratings booster in the TV market, as the former model turned wrestling star has won the hearts of fans throughout the wrestling world since her debut. It was no surprise that she would get so many votes to us because no matter where we go that she is at, fans are coming up to ask her if we could ask her if she would take a photo with them.

The top 3 runner-ups were none other than

1) Santana G
2) “Miss Natural” Heather Patera
3) Jordynne Grace

Once again we would like to thank each of you that took the time to vote for these talented women and be sure to let your favorite promotion that you would love to see your favorite come in to wrestle under the big lights above the squared circle.

In the near future MWR’s fan relations Dubray Tallman will be hunting down Lucy Mendez to present her with her very own 2014 MWR Sexiest Wrestler trophy!!
