RIP Wrestling Promoter and Former Wrestler Tony Casta

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 4, 2020

Tony Casta with his wife Wanda

It is with great sadness that we are to report today that our longtime friend Tony Casta has passed away. Fans of today know Tony as the man that you first saw along with his wife Wanda as you entered the historic South Broadway Athletic Club each and every month in St. Louis.

Tony Casta was always welcoming to all his fans and took time to tell stories of matches and shows that he had promoted in days gone past. His promotion MMWA to this day can lay claim to being one of the most successful long term promotions in the country packing sell out crowds year after year. Casta would team up with fellow promoter Herb Simmons to do joint shows under the MMWA-SICW umbrella. The two often teamed up to support various fundraisers to give back to the community. His life would not only touch the fans but many wrestlers you and old that he worked with. Chances are if you have seen a wrestler in the Midwest during the past 40 years they have worked with Tony Casta at one point or another.

In 2014 Missouri Wrestling Revival knew that he was an obvious choice for the MWR Lifetime Achievement Award. A great write up was done for the announcement of Tony Casta as the recipient of the award was done by Jimmy Harris and I welcome you to take the time to read it here.

Other Awards

2018 Hall Of Fame Class The Independent St. Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame.

2018 Hall of Fame Class The Midwest Independent Wrestling Hall Of Fame.

We would like to send our deepest condolences to his lovely wife Wanda, as well as his extended family and friends during this trying time. We will miss his smile and handshake as we enter the doors at the SBAC.

On a personal level, thank you Tony for your friendship and support of MWR. Today is the first day we are without you, but we will always remember you Tony.

The St.Louis Independent Wrestling Hall of Fame was founded to pay tribute to those that have contributed to the Independent Wrestling business. The home of the Independent Wrestling Hall of Fame will share the same location as the St.Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame at the South Broadway Athletic Club. There are many local men and women who have worked in the ring and developed their skills in the independent wrestling business. A committee was formed and will be developing the criteria each year to be considered for induction into the St.Louis Independent Wrestling Hall of Fame. As the final cards of the first MWR trading card set comes to a close it is quite fitting that MWR adds Big Time to the collection, Jimmy “Big Time” Harris that is. Harris was nicknamed “Big Time” by the wrestlers for being the man to lay down the law during high profile matches for the past twenty years.

Mentored by referee greats such as Wrestling at the Chase referees Eddie Smith, Terry Riley as well as WWE’S Dave Hebner Harris has been the man on record for matches that would involved Kerry Von Erich, Chris Adams, Dory Funk Jr, Kamala, Rocky Johnson and many more.

Harris would go down in history as the man who would referee WWE World Champion Randy Orton’s first every match!!

Today Harris continues to work as the senior referee in many of the biggest matches around the Midwest at MMWA, SICW and TXWE in Michigan.

It is a great honor to announce that Jimmy “Big Time” Harris is number 96 in the MWR Trading card set.
