2013 MWR Lifetime Achievement Recipient Karl. K. Lauer

Karl’s shares time with his mentor and friend Leo and June Garibaldi – The two were friends from 1947 until Leo’s death in 2008.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on August 1938, Karl. K. Lauer has spent his lifetime touching many people around the world. Lauer’s family moved to Los Angeles California in 1940, where he would make his home until 1994.

His father Karl Lauer Sr. founded Karl’s Equipment Co. in 1947. Lauer Sr. built specialty refrigeration cases under the trade name Flot-Aire (pronounced “Float Air”), which is the system he designed for “Custom” Floral Refrigeration. Karl joined the company in 1962 upon discharge from the Air Force and found success when he took the job of President and CEO of Flot-Aire from 1965-1994, MFG Commercial Refrigeration equipment. The company today is owned and run by his son Wayne Lauer with the main office located in Rolla, Missouri. It is now called Flot-Aire Mid-America

At the age of twenty years old, Lauer would serve his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1962. During that time he would take part in one tour of Greenland North Pole expedition, as well as one tour of Cambodia, assigned guard on the Presidential aircraft the Columbine during the tour at Charleston AFB South Carolina.

For 12 years from 1980-1992, Lauer also served on the United States Congressional Advisory Board under United States Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. This was a non paid appointment but Lauer said it was an experience and a pleasure to meet President Ronald Reagan, someone he greatly respected and enjoyed learning from him. He does not talk politics very often and said he has never voted a straight ticket but for the candidate.

With a business mind, he had a idea to team up wrestling with stock car racing early on with “Wrestle Race”. Mike LeBell the NWA promoter for So Calif turned down the idea, so Lauer just booked his talent from Mike for a flat fee per wrestler and went on with the plan. During the race night on the half mile track would be a race, and then they would roll out the ring and have a match. This process would then repeat throughout the evening. The attendance crowd increased from 4,000-5,000 to 7,000-8,000 fans from the partnership. The track got 60% and Lauer 40 % of the gate, back then a 12K to 21K was a very respectable gate seeing all tickets were only $3.00, it was not long when the wrestlers started calling him to be booked direct and he paid much more than the $40.00 guarantee they were getting.

The team up with be short-lived team up, but the fact that Karl Lauer had a mind for promoting earned the respect of future partner wrestler Gory Guerrero. Gory was one of the most respected and knowledgeable men I have ever known and was a fantastic mentor for me regarding wrestling. Lauer joined the prestigious Cauliflower Alley Club in 1979 when he was sponsored by two very old friends Leo Garibaldi and Red Bastien, back then the only way for someone that did not have the credentials to be a member to join was at the sponsorship of two members.

In January of 1980, the then-President and founder Iron Mike Mazurki of the CAC phoned Karl Lauer and asked him if he would consider become the CAC business manager. “Sure,” Karl said, “how long do you want me to be the business manager?” Mike Mazurki answered: “No time limit.” It has lasted over 30 yrs.

In 1983 Lauer became the business manager until 1988 he was asked to be the Vice President while wrestling great Lou Thesz was the president. In 1988 and Chairman of the board in 1989 until finishing up as the CEO starting in 1989 till the present, a total of 34 years with the club with 24 year tenure as the club CEO.

Though Karl Lauer was very hard working in his responsibilities for the CAC, he continued to promote shows under the promotion California Pro Wrestling that was established in 1979 with Gory Guerrero and four other investors started. Lauer would buy out the five other men in 1982. During that time he ran weekly shows in San Bernardino, San Pedro, Santa Ana and semi- monthly shows at the famous Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. During this time, He took the time to be trained under the watchful eye of Leo Garibaldi and Prof Tora Tanaka. Lauer donned the hood and entered the squared circle under the names the Masked Bossman or Gringo Patrone.

 photo KARL4_zpsbf0adf1a.jpg

Though he only worked specialty matches for his promotion mainly to work an angle or get someone over further in the card. He always remembered what Gory had told him “no one comes to see the promoter or the referee, always put the talent over” and he did, and always stayed low keyed to the fans, after all they were paying all the bills.

Lauer would experience a setback for his promotion when he lost the lease on the Olympic, but he was able to have 13 shows that grossed over $100,000.00 in 1988 and 1989, while this was when WWF, NWA and AWA were making 3 or 4 shows a year within 20 miles of the Olympic Auditorium from 1987 thru 1999. Lauer switched to Lucha Libra style shows in the late 80′s featuring the stars of AAA all brought in on a working visa from Mexico City until the closed promotion in 1994 after losing the lease to Able DeLuna who bought the Olympic master lease. He worked for 2 years as advisor for EMLL Americana which was owned by Able Deluna, AKA Luna Music who had bought the lease to the Olympic, and had the EMLL CONTRACT FOR California.

In 1992, Karl Lauer would quit that part of his wrestling career in California when he moved to Rolla, Missouri, where his son Wayne had set up a Flot-Aire factory. The wrestling promoting bug hit him again in 1995, when  he  founded World Legion Wrestling. He would hire the former 8-time NWA World Champion Harley Race to be the booker.

In 2000, he would sell WLW to Race who would change the name to World League Wrestling. A promotion that is still going today.

In 2000 Lauer’s integrity and respect would earn him a part time position with the Missouri Office of Athletics in the year 2000, a job that he still holds to this date.

Karl Lauer has been a positive influence to humanity, pro wrestling around the country for the past sixty plus years. In wrestling he has promoted, ring announced in and out the ring for CPW while on KODC_TV CHANNEL 56 in California and WLW. Lauer even managed pro wrestlers Prof Toa Tanaka, “Wildman” Jack Armstrong , Victor Rivera, John Tolos and Jay York in the ring. When asked about his wrestling career, Lauer stated, “I never consider myself as a wrestler, nor was I ever very good in the ring, but I always felt I was very good on the mic, and I could create, control and excite a crowd very well.”

 photo deedeedee_zps886edea1.jpg

Lauer continued, “Wrestling was never my main source of income. Though I has made a lot of money at it, MFG and finance have always been my forte, from a kid who use to watch the greats in the 40’s and 50’s to selling peanuts at the Olympic Auditorium and other arenas around the Los Angeles areas to becoming a successful promoter has been the least to say a fun and a good ride.”

There is no doubt the reason why Karl Lauer was chosen unanimously as a MWR Lifetime Achievement award. During his life Karl Lauer has been a successful business leader, a Military Veteran in the United States Air Force, a wrestler, a manager, a announcer, a promoter and a key component for the success of the Cauliflower Alley Club. When he started with the CAC they had an estimated 368 members, throughout the years a little over 8,000 have been a part of the organization. Today the CAC is honored to boast an active number estimated of members around 2,000 living.

 photo deedee4_zps22a1efe8.jpg

Outside the ring, Lauer enjoys a successful marriage with his wife Barbara. The two were married on June 7, 1960 after meeting each other while both were in the Air Force. After 53 years the two cherish their time with the family. Karl and Barbara enjoy spending time with his son and daughter in law who also adopted two foster kids on the ranch and his three grandsons and 3 grand-daughters in Missouri. And 4 more in California. Of the 10 grand-kids 2 are engineers, 1 a 3rd year law student, one in the movie industry in California and 6 in high school.

Karl Lauer’s family celebrates Thanksgiving 2013.

In and out of the ring, Karl Lauer has set the standard by leading by example at every goal that he has set. It is with great excitement that we are to honor Karl Lauer for his positive influence to pro wrestling around the country that has helped the reputation of the sport, while supporting the wrestlers and fans of the sport that we love.

2013 MWR Future Star of the Year Alexander Rudolph

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 5, 2014

 photo ALEX_zps795020be.jpg

Note: For the first time in the history of MWR, we have decided to present two MWR Future Star Awards. The reason is for the amount of talent and effort that both Raphael King and Alexander Rudolph possess. King a native of the Midwest in less than a year has become one of the most sought out young stars in pro wrestling today wrestling over 184 matches in his rookie year. King is blessed with great looks, a body that has yet to reach its full potential and charisma to make it to the top.

The second wrestler Alexander Rudolph has been in the area for some time now starting at a young age. Standing at 6’5 , 269 pounds Rudolph has the size and power to make an impact for years to come. While doing the research of all the awards for the 2013 MWR Awards, the fact of the improvement and skill level of Rudolph was undeniable. We have had witness many matches in the past for Rudolph over the years, but for the first time you could see a more focus, mature and fearsome Rudolph. At St. Louis Anarchy he stepped out of his comfort zone, transforming in the Alex the Big Owl. MWR owner Brian Kelley stated in his opinion “that though he (Brian) is not a fan of the owl gimmick, he followed in the footsteps of Gary Jay to make the best of it and both of them are  really entertaining t Isn’t that what pro wrestling is about, entertaining the fans?”

Winning the MWR Future Star Award does not guarantee success in the wrestling world, but it’s our sites way of saying that we respect the wrestler for their talent and more importantly for their work ethic as they strive to make an impact in the world of pro wrestling. It takes sacrifice and dedication to spend their money to seek extra training through camps, seminars while traveling down the roads each and every weekend to make a show for the fans.

Both of these wrestlers are on the road to success; will they be able to stay on track to become a force around the world in pro wrestling? Only time will tell us as only a few has that extra desire to make it to go along with luck and good health. Yet, just as MWR has in the pass with former MWR Future Star Award recipients Sir Bradley Charles, Brian Breaker and ACH, the two 2013 recipients have the total support of MWR as we honor them with one of our highest honors to a young star in the Midwest.

========================================================================================

Standing at 6’5, 269 pounds, Alexander Rudolph took the step to be trained by Dingo, one of the best in the Midwest, at the Dynamo Pro Gym. Inspired by hardcore legend Mick Foley’s autobiography “Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks” from 1999, Rudolph ten years later was able to make his dream come true in April.

For the first three years it seemed as if Rudolph was content on being a big fish in a small pound as he stayed for the most part in St. Louis wrestling for a select group of promotions. In 2013, the leash has been broken as the man that states that he is all “brute force and ignorance” has been looking to not only make a name for himself, but to become the best that he can be.

The American Viking would be a mainstay for Dynamo Pro Wrestling, SICW and Strictly Insane Pro Wrestling while changing it up as Alex the Big Owl for St. Louis Anarchy. Outside the area Rudolph traveled to Texas many times while testing the waters at shows throughout the eastern half of the Unites States. Rudolph was featured at the debut show for Beyond Wrestling, a promotion set up to spotlight the stars around the country to the hardcore wrestling fans.

In 2013, Rudolph would showcase his skills wrestling in two of the hardest hitting matches of his career when he took on Adam Raw at FIST Wrestling and in April would team up with Jordan Lacey in a three way tag team match at St. Louis Anarchy in a losing effort against the ACW Tag Champs Jo Jo Bravo and Thomas Shire as well as Darren Dean and Aaron Solo. In a match that Rudolph lost, he would come out of it with confidence that would elevate him to the next level.

Rudolph would work just about every weekend. But with the foundation of knowledge from taking part in Harley Race’s World League Wrestling, WWE, and NOAH wrestling camp in November everyone here at Missouri Wrestling Revival has faith that if Rudolph should continue on the road that he is on, he will be able to make an impact for years to come.

It is with great excitement that we are to name Alexander Rudolph the second of  the two 2013 MWR Future Stars of the years.

Standing at 6’5 inches tall, weighing in at 245 lbs., and only 20 years of age, (Matt) Raphael King, hit the ground running hard! The St. Louis native burst onto the scene in December of 2012, and started making waves almost immediately. After only a few months, he debuted at the world renowned Ohio Valley Wrestling and made lots of noise. He didn’t stop there of course, wrestling 3, even 4 times a week, having over 150 matches in his rookie year! He quickly took his talents to numerous states throughout the Midwest.

His hard work, dedication, and passion truly showed, as in only his first year of in-ring competition, he’s worked for top notch promotions such as Harley Race’s WLW, NWA, and AIWF. . A true student of the game, he has learned under top names such as Al Snow, Dragongate’s Jon Davis and ROH’s Delirious.

Since July, King has moved to Atlanta, GA to further his career and knowledge, training under Curtis Hughes at the world renowned WWA4 wrestling school, (formerly WCW’s Power Plant). He’s also debuted for numerous new promotions in the south, injecting his talents and skill, into North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida, with more states and promotions on his list to conquer. This rookie is truly the poster boy, frontman, model image if you will, of hard work, dedication, passion, sacrifice, and a true love and respect for this business. Accomplishing SO MUCH, in such a short period of time, at such a young age is more than enough to qualify this young man to be ANYONE’S Rookie of the Year. 2013 MWR Tag Team of the Year- Devin and Mason Cutter, The Hooligans

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 3, 2014

 photo HH_zps4e33aea3.jpg

In 2013 fans got to see a motivated and more focused Hooligan tag team than ever before. The brothers have been considered by many to be the premier tag team in the Midwest. They continued to thrill the fans throughout the MWR coverage area while invading a total of nine states that included the East Coast and South East region.

Over the course of the year they were able to capture the SNPW, PGP, and Zero 1 USA Tag Team Championships. During that time picked up wins against Zero Gravity, Davey Richards and Kyle O’Reilly, Kentucky Buffet in a cage match, If Looks Could Kill, Gary Jay and Alexander Rudolph, Cali 31 -Darren Dean and Aaron Solo, Bragg’N’Swagg – Randy Ray and Perry Winkle, Sons of Michigan – Ben Boone and N8 Mattson in a hardcore match, I.O.U. – Nick Iggy and Kerry Awful, Davey Vega and Jon Gresham, Veda Scott and Greg Iron and many more .

The first ever matchup with the Bum Rush Brothers went to a no contest at FIST Wrestling, and the team showed the world what they were capable of when they advanced to the finals of the Absolute Intense Wrestling Double Dare Tag Team tournament by defeating PWI Rookie of the Year Veda Scott and Greg Iron before losing to the tag team Nixon consisting of  Ricky Page and Bobby Beverly on IPPV.

The Hooligans would end the year with over 100 matches that many would say were the best of the year. For the first time ever a tag team in the MWR Coverage area would be named the MWR Tag Team of the Year for a second time, and that team is none other than Devin and Mason Cutter, The Hooligans.

2013 MWR Female Wrestler of the Year “Miss Natural” Heather Patera

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 2, 2014

 photo Natural3_zps95fb9e68.jpg

The 2012 MWR Female wrestler of the year Heather Patera continues to be one of the top females in the sport today. Each and every weekend the daughter of Ken Patera is wrestling in and out of the coverage area. At Metro Pro Wrestling, she caused havoc along with the Commission feuding with former friend Steven J Girthy.

After surprisingly losing to red hot star Angelus Layne in March, Patera defeated MsChif in her hometown of St Louis at Dynamo Pro Wrestling in a Falls Count Anywhere match. April saw Patera regain the WLW Ladies Title from arch rival Stacey O’Brien for a 6th time, only to lose the title a few weeks later.

In July, Natural avenged her loss to Layne at Metro Pro Wrestling and defeated Mia Martinez at 3XW. She made her debut at Pro Wrestling Epic at the annual Balloon Festival picking up a win against newcomer Devyn Nicole. Another square off against MsChif ended with a loss.

Throughout the year, Miss Natural would return to SHIMMER, star at AAW and be booked around the country against some of the very best in pro wrestling today.

Championships, great matches around the country and talent are key reasons on why Miss Natural is awarded the 2013 MWR Female Wrestler of the Year. She  will go down in history as the first ever back to back MWR Female Wrestler of the Year.

2013 MWR Wrestler of the Year “ DirdEY” Jake Dirden

Posted by flairwhoooooo on January 1, 2014

 photo 000000_zpsd8d2eb11.jpg

Last year at this time Jake Dirden was just another young aspiring wrestler looking to make his mark in the Midwest. During 2013, he had wrestled at Dynamo Pro Wrestling taking on El Sanchez and picking up an impressive wins against veteran Sean Vincent. He would also make his debuts in some random matches at Metro Pro Wrestling, 3XWrestling and a few other promotions. Yet, it would be a trip to Eldon, Missouri to Harley Race’s World League Wrestling’s annual WLW/WWE and Pro Wrestling NOAH week long camp that would set the foundation for make 2013 the year of “ DirdEY”.

At the WLW/WWE/NOAH camp show he was so dominate and impressive in his destruction of the talented Mizfitt Manners that we have not seen Manners return to the Midwest ever since. More importantly the devastation was witnessed by the top minds of NOAH who quickly signed him for a tour of Japan in the spring.

With the confidence of that match at WLW, Jack Dirden had his biggest test to date when he matched up with the “Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell on January 4th at 3XWrestling. Once again Dirden was flawless as he upset the then former 3-time 3XW Pure Wrestling Champion. TNA Wrestling on SPIKE TV had a contest called Gut Check where fans could vote for a young star that they felt worthy for a chance to wrestle for TNA. Though Dirden would be one of the wrestlers to receive most of the votes for this opportunity, the contest would just never come together and just went away.

Prior to leaving to Japan he would make a statement at Dynamo Pro Wrestling when he defeated Ricky Cruz, a man that has been pinned only by a select few in the Midwest.

The trip around the world would not slow down the man as he terrorized the fans, and opponents. He would find himself in magazines and in the media in Japan during his first tour while wrestling close to 50 matches that involved Takeshi Morishima, Naomichi Marufuji, Takashi Sugiura, Super Crazy, Taiji Ishimori, Maybach Taniguchi, Mohammed Yone, TMDK, Hitoshi Kumano, Katsuhiko Nakajima, Atsushi Kotoge, Yoshinari Ogawa, Mikey Nicholls, Masao Inoue. He would also debut at Kensuke Sasaki’s Diamond Ring promotion.

His return to the Midwest came with much fanfare as promoters quickly sought out his services. At Dynamo Pro wrestling Dirden won a handicap match against Billy McNeil and Dash Rando. During FIST Wrestling’s second tournament of the year he would demolish Poo Doo the Cow. In the second round he would not be stopped as he defeated arch rival Cruz, Alexander Rudolph, and David Vaughn in a four way match. In the finals he would meet the winner of the first FIST tournament Billy McNeil. McNeil fought with heart and gave it his all in an exciting match, but Dirden would not be denied and won the second FIST Tournament Championship.

A return to Kansas City’s Metro Pro Wrestling saw Dirden tested against a wrestler that is one of the top wrestling technicians in the Midwest, Steve Fender. Fender a Harley Race Protégé has enjoyed several trips to Japan as well as appearances for WWE. Once again Dirden would have his hand raised and the best was yet to come.

At SICW in 2013 he had picked up wins against the Waco, Purple Passion and “Lockdown” Tony Raze, but was tested on October 12th in his biggest match for the promotion against Flash Flanagan. Though he would not have his hand raised, Flanagan would not either as it would become double count out. The main event that night was a 15 man  style Royal Rumble style match that saw everyone at SICW unable to take Dirden off of the top of the mountain.

Jake Dirden would return to his hometown of Pittsfield, Illinois on October 26th and pin Dan Walsh to win the DPW Heavyweight title. The next day he would debut for BEYOND Wrestling with a win against Texas standout wrestler Ricky Starks. His next match at SICW saw him defeat Travis Cook’s Organization member Dave Vaughn to secure a title match on the December show in East Carondelet, Illinois.

If anyone doubted his victory against former DPW Champion Dan Walsh, then all doubts were erased when he retained the title in a rematch. The show was sponsored by when STAG Beer and received rave reviews.
On November 30th Proving Ground Pro had a tournament that was to determine the vacant PGP Franchise title in Petersburg, Illinois. Dirden was the underdog when he met Ring of Honor star Tadarius Thomas. But on this night the power and intensity of Dirden was just too much for Thomas to handle. In the first round in the other bracket Ruff Crossing would defeat Tyson Dux. The finals of the tournament would see one of the most explosive and exciting matches of the year as the two went at each other with a vengeance. In a shocking moment and a testament to the heart of Ruff Crossing, Dirden was able to viciously drop Crossing onto a table, but somehow, someway Crossing was able to kick out. The battle continued with blows rocking each other that only the best could survive. When the smoke cleared, Crossing won the vacated title and became the first man in the MWR coverage area to defeat Dirden in singles action in 2013.

With the first loss of the year in the area for Dirden, he looked to end the title reign of the Ironman, Ken Kasa . But with the influence of Cook ringside the always opportunistic Kasa took advantage of that one mistake and turned the Asiatic Spike into a pin combo for the win.

Dirden had the wins, the tour of Japan, the championship. But most importantly he had the emotion that he was able to receive from the fans as they come to their feet and watch intensely because they just never know what Jake Dirden will do. From huge kicks in the middle of the ring, to throwing his opponent over a row of chairs into the wall, there is never a dull moment in a “ DirdEY” match.
