East Carondelet mayor promotes wrestling, weight loss

Herb Simmons grew up with a mother and grandmother who loved watching Pat O’Connor and Dick “the Bruiser” battle it out in the ring.
Professional wrestling helped the whole family survive hot summer nights in East St. Louis public housing.
“We would take our black-and-white television outside,” said Herb, 59, of East Carondelet. “All the neighbors would sit on the grass or bring their lawn chairs, and we’d watch ‘Wrestling at the Chase.'”
The legendary St. Louis TV show influenced Herb to grow up and work as a professional wrestling promoter for more than 40 years.

Wrestling with reality: Monthly bouts in East Carondelet really get a hold on fans
East Carondelet steps back in time one Saturday a month, reviving a spectacle made popular by the St. Louis TV show “Wrestling at the Chase” in the ’60s and ’70s.
Professional wrestlers in Spandex briefs rumble in the ring, shout insults at their opponents and rile up crowds with inflated egos and charged rivalries.
“I love it,” said Stella Schmid, 87, who never misses a match at East Carondelet Community Center. “I love everything about it.”
The former village clerk used to go to wrestling shows at Kiel Auditorium with her late husband, Edward. They met “King Kong” Brody at Dupo High School in 1984.

In less than one week several of the top legends in the world of pro wrestling will return to St Louis at the Argosy Casino for a meet and greet on Friday and a show with the legends. This week we take a look at the legends that are set to appear at this historic weekend.

A native of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Jerry Brisco comes from a famous wrestling family and a famous wrestling state. He was a three-time state placewinner in the Oklahoma high school tournament and wrestled at Oklahoma State University, a college that is the proud possessor of 34 NCAA team championships.
Jack Brisco, Jerry’s older brother, was NCAA champion at Oklahoma State and became NWA world heavyweight champion. Jerry followed his brother into the professional ranks and carved out a tremendous reputation for himself. He won many regional titles and in 1981 became NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion of the world. He and his brother also claimed the world tag-team championship.
Jerry held the WWF Hardcore title in 2000. After retiring from the ring, he fashioned a successful career in the front office of the WWE. He travels the nation scouting for fresh talent and has helped develop some of the best WWE stars.
Living today in Tampa, Florida, Jerry Brisco has teamed with Jack to become the first brother act ever selected for the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame, as Jack was inducted in 2001.

NEW Quadruple Junior Heavyweight champion, Jonathan Gresham

Just over two weeks after winning the Zero 1 USA x-Division title from Oliver Cain in Mattoon, Illinois, Gresham becomes a Quadruple Junior Heavyweight Champion by defeating Takuya Sugawara at Zero1 (Tanaka 20th Anniversary) and K-DOJO at the Korakuen Hall.

Jim Raschke won a high school state title for Omaha Central High School and moved on the University of Nebraska , where he was Big 8 Conference champion. He also won two AAU national titles and in 1963 placed third in the world championships in the Greco-Roman style of wrestling.
He spent two years in the Army and taught high school one year in Omaha before starting a professional career. Joe Dusek got him started, and he began working for Verne Gagne. As a professional, he was a huge attraction as Baron Von Raschke, stomping into the ring and using the feared claw hold. He was a top box-office draw for two decades and won many titles, including half of the world tag team championship with Mad Dog Vachon.
