ROH Recap Collinsville, IL March 13

Posted by reimaginejournalism on April 21, 2009

By Kari Williams

Ring of Honor (ROH) returned to the Gateway Center in Collinsville, IL to a packed crowd waiting anxiously, not only for the matches, but for Ric Flair’s highly-anticipated appearance. Having attended both shows when ROH traveled to the Midwest, I can vouch for the fact that the second show greatly surpassed the first. With Flair in house, every wrestler seemed to step it up a notch to impress the legend.

Two pre-show matches took place, and the quality of those bouts set the stage for the rest of the night. Fans appeared most impressed by Travis Sawyer v. Alex Payne and the energy buzz created during that match lasted the entire night. With mere moments between Sawyer/Payne and the official matches beginning, eagerness buzzed around the building.

Suddenly, the lights went out. The room became pitch black and anticipation buzzed in the atmosphere. As if on cue, everyone, including myself, stood up and clapped to the heart-pounding beat that blared through the speakers. An “R-O-H” chant rumbled from the depths of the room to encompass its entirety as fans in the front row banged their fists against the metal barricade in front of them.

In the first match, Jay Brisco took on Roderick Strong and the fans showed their devotion with chants for both men echoing from wall to wall. Only minutes into the match up, someone off to the side started a “Man up!” chant, which sparked a fire in the men. Not long after the resurgence of energy, they began chopping each other, prompting the always-expected “Woooooo!” from the crowd, signifying Flair-appreciation. Brisco and Strong’s ability cannot be denied, and these men fought a fast-paced and exciting bout. On this exchange, Strong snuck away with the victory after a quick roll-up that caught Brisco off guard.

With the fans pumped and ready for more, SHIMMER Champion MsChif, accompanied by Jimmy Jacobs and Delirious, defended her belt against Daizee Haze. At one point, Haze appeared poised for victory, and when she ascended the turnbuckles, Jacobs pushed her off, giving MsChif a window of opportunity. Haze tried to keep the advantage, but after taking a devastating power bomb lost a great deal of momentum. She did have enough fire left to connect with a bulldog followed up by a missile drop kick for a two-count, but Jacobs’ constant interference got in Haze’s head. She climbed to the top rope and flew off with a crossbody that took out Delirious and Jacobs. This distraction is what did in Haze, causing MsChif to retain. Jacobs then delivered the message to Haze that if she got involved in his and Delirious’ upcoming tag match he would make her feel what he made Delirious feel.

After the AoTF went to the back, a four corner survival took place between Austin Aries, Kenny Omega Silas Young and Claudio Castagnoli. From the moment the bell rang, bodies flew everywhere. Aries started the match off very strong, and with the fans on his side, he refused to disappoint. Fast-paced and filled with quick pins, these four men put everything on the line. Move after move continued to impress, leaving fans in awe. In the end, Aries’ antics allowed him to pick up the win.

Next, Flair’s music hit, and the entire crowd stood up to cheer for, and bow to, the legend. Nothing gets wrestling fans more hyped than seeing the wheeling, dealing, kiss stealing, jet flying, limosuine riding, son of a gun, not twenty feet away from them. I happen to glance over at Brian Kelley when Flair walked by, and he stood erect, arms raised high above his head, bowing in unison with everyone else in his row, paying homage to the dirtiest player in the game.

After intermission, Davey Richards and the American Wolves took on El Generico, Kevin Steen and Bobby Dempsey in a grudge match. The six men fought with such intensity and hooked every fan before the bell even rang. Dempsey became the focus of the match and delivered a fierce amount of punishment to his opponents. Unfortunately, Generico, Steen and Dempsey could not overcome the odds with Richards and the Wolves having Larry Sweeney in their corner.

After intermission, Irish Airborne wrestled Rhet Titus and Kenny King. From the moment Titus and King came out, Titus was heckled with chants of “Stevie-Richards!” which may have contributed to their mindset going into the match. Despite Titus and King’s determination, they could not defeat the incredible tandem of Irish Airborne, who went on the offense with a number of impressive double-teams to secure victory.

In a night filled with remarkable match after remarkable match, the battle between “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson and Bison Smith ranked high on my list of favorites. Before the two even locked-up, a “Best in the World” chant broke out for Danielson, the clear-cut favorite. Danielson’s confidence frustated Smith, who could not seem to gain the upper hand early on. Soon, Smith turned his frustration into willpower, and he began to over power Danielson. The bout consisted of multiple nearfalls for both men, but Danielson wounded Smith enough for him to be unable to answer the 10 count, resulting in a count-out victory for the best in the world.

Jacobs and Delirious teamed up against Tyler Black and Jerry Lynn next in another collision that sent fans into a frenzy. Frequent tags mixed with spectacular athleticism gave Lynn and Black the early advantage. In an attempt to take over, Jacobs sent Delirious to do his dirty work, which looked as if it help for a while. However, after Haze’s interference, which costs AoTF the win, Delirious stood up for himself against Jacobs, who has tormented him unrelentlessly for months. Delirious and Haze embraced in the center of the ring and resounding cheers of happiness exploded as the two walk to the back, arm in arm.

Brent Albright challenged Nigel McGuinness for the ROH World Title in the main event. With Flair sitting ringside, these two made put on, arguably, the match of the night. McGuinness and Albright wrestled a purely technical bout with a mixture of high-impact moves and meshed into a masterpiece. Flair looked on approvingly, especially when the competitors let out the patented Ric Flair chops. The most decisive part of the match came when Castagnoli ran into the match, causing a disqualification victory for Albright. Castagnoli and McGuinness double-teamed Albright, causing Flair to make the save and he raised Albright’s hand after they sent their opponents running to the back.

The next ROH show in Collinsville will take place on October 9. Tickets can be purchased through rohwrestling.com.

MWR Spotlight: Eric Allen The Peorian Pride Champion”?

Posted by flairwhoooooo on April 20, 2009

eric-allen

By Brian “Flair” Kelley

Eric AllenThe Peorian Pride Champion”?  If you are a fan of wrestling and did not know that such a title existed then you are not alone. Just by chance I was in Wood River Illinois to check out MECW for MWR when this brash cocky Eric Allen was introduced to the crowd as the Peorian Pride Champion (much to my surprise) in his match with Brian Scrilla.  I consider myself knowledgeable of the independent scene in this area but this was the first that I had heard of such a title.

With the camera in hand I watched as Allen used every trick in the book to keep his coveted title belt. Scrilla was the victim of foul play when “Exxxplicit Content” member Ryan Slade’s valet Jenna Stark distracted the referee, to allow Slade to use the belt on Scrilla’s knee to preserve the victory and retain the title.

I was able to catch up with Allen after the match to ask him “Where did you win this belt?” His reply to me was that he had won the belt in Peoria Illinois. Allen stated “Peoria is famous for the fact that for something to succeed it must work in Peoria. If it works in Peoria then it will work anywhere. The Pro Wrestling legends organization got together and decided to bring all the top stars in Illinois and several superstars of the WWE, TNA and ROH. We competed in an underground tournament of 64 to determined Champion to finally get to the truth too who the best wrestler in the world really was” When I plainly asked who the superstars were that was in the tournament Allen was quick to say “I have no time for 20 questions, I have to get back to Peoria, they are having a parade to commemorate my victory tonight.”

While I was on the three hour trip back from MECW and wrestling was hot on my mind. I could not wait to do the research and find out more about this Championship and more importantly why MWR was not invited?

On Monday evening I decided to see how Allen’s parade went. I went on the trusty websites and did a search for parade in Peoria March 21….nothing. I thought maybe it was listed on March 22 beings that it was so late….nothing. Hmmm… I did a thorough search on the Peoria’s newspaper websites and still came up with zilch.  Who knows maybe it was “underground”!

I decided to contact some of the MWR Wrestling advisers. One correspondent that wished to remain anonymous enlightened me with some great information.

I was told that Eric Allen “started out in Gateway Championship Wrestling in St Louis under the tutelage of Dingo for 5 months. During the later stages of the company Ego Express (KC Karrington and Steven Kennedy) , Shorty Biggs, Sean Vincent and Cameron Cage took over the training. Allen quickly felt that he had trained with the best, so that proved that he was superior to the rest of the locker room and he had yet to have a match.

The correspondent went on to tell me that “His (Eric Allen) ego escalated even further when his hand was raised in Overland Park when he defeated Trent Stone. In Eric’s mind he was a World Champion in the making.  Then by surprise GCW went under and he was left without a home promotion. When you saw Eric all he ever talked about was how he could have been the greatest Gateway Championship Champion of all time. Time went on and he never really seemed to be focused.”

Then he got the call from Lethal Wrestling Alliance to wrestle young Brandon Aarons  when the Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley) came to town. He told anyone that would listen, take notice because the MCMG may take him back with them to TNA after he schooled “This punk kid”.

Aarons was able to get the win and really seemed to get in the head of Allen. Later that same month Allen got another chance to show the LWA what he was made of defeating “Just” Rick Stone.  After the match was over Allen spent the rest of the night lobbing LWA Management for another chance at Brandon Aaron claiming that their first match was fluke.  Allen received his wish and when LWA returned to St Charles the next month the two went at it again it was a repeat of their first encounter.

Allen just disappeared for almost a year and hit rock bottom when he was defeated by Steven Miller. Eric Allen who envisioned himself as the next World Champion was furious and humiliated when an LWA fan started a thread asking “Who the F is Eric Allen?”  One fan thought is was a ref, another one replied he is good a drawing pictures, and one Superfan demanded that he got to see pictures of this Eric Allen still in disbelief that he existed.

High Voltage Wrestling certainly knows who Eric Allen is. They got to see first hand the talent first hand on March 14th where he was very impressive in his domination of Max Archer. After the match was over he was seen lobbying HVW booker Frank Thurman for a HVW title shot with comments like “Let me put HVW on the wrestling map, HVW is young and fresh looking to strive to become the best in the Midwest and I can bring the promotion to the next level.

My correspondent went on to say “The last I caught up with Eric Allen he had told me how he had won this Peorian Pride Championship.” (I had not told my contact where and how Allen had told me he won it)  Allen said that he was headlined in a huge secret  fundraising wrestling event for the Republican Party at the Peoria Civic Center to determined the very first Peorian Pride Champion. He would not say who he fought but hinted that it was a former WWE Superstar who happens to be in the UFC right now. Any fool would know that he was wanting me to think that it was Brock Lesner but when I humored him and asked was it Lesner he replied “ I would love to tell you but you know the government, everything is a secret.”

He ended it with “The man is talented, there is no doubt about it. The problem is his lack of friends due to his ego.” The man is shady and I wouldn’t turn my back on him if I was one of his friends.

Word got back to Allen that I was inquiring information about his title and history and he contacted me via e-mail.  It was short and sweet, “Mr. Kelley make your way to Woodriver Illinois on April 25 at MECW to see the future of the sport and if you’re lucky I will give you the time to know more about the most dominate champion of the Midwest, Eric Allen “The Peorian Pride Champion”.  Tell my fans that I am blessing them with my appearance at High Voltage Wrestling in May when they return to Granite City, IL on May 9th.”

It looks as if I will have to wait a little longer to find out the truth of Eric Allen. Join MWR at Woodriver Illinois on April 25 as we try to get to the truth of the Peorian Pride Championship. Till then  for more information on this show please go to MECWrestling.com

Rockwell and MWR make a new wrestling fan’s day!

Posted by Admin on April 19, 2009

Missouri Wrestling Revival has been giving t-shirts away all over the Midwest at numerous pro wrestling promotions’ events, but on April 17, 2009 in Des Moines, Iowa for 3XWrestling’s “April Showers…  of POWER!” at the Des Moines Social Club, “Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell took the time before his outstanding MWR Midwest Best Series match with Mike Sydal to make the latest t-shirt giveaway special.

Before the bell sounded, Rockwell tossed the MWR t-shirt that he wore to the ring out into the crowd, landing into the arms of two young wrestling fans, Thomas Christiansen and Michael Oliver.  Immediately after the match, in which Rockwell successfully defended his 3XW Cruiserweight Title in what many are already calling the match of the evening, the boys made their way to the merchandise table, picking up a Jimmy Rockwell 8×10 photo.  No doubt that Mr. Christiansen and Mr. Oliver tried to get the photo signed!

Please remember to support Missouri Wrestling Revival…  the company that continues to “Give back to Midwest pro wrestling!”

MWR Fan Spotlight: The Fuzzy Hat Club

Posted by flairwhoooooo on April 19, 2009

By Dubray Tallman

I truly believe that it is not only the wrestler that brings energy to a federation. Fans are important too. Have you ever been to a wrestling event and it was so silent and dead? Fans help make a wrestler, the wrestlers depend on them to let them know where to go during a match to provide the most excitement.
I would like to showcase some of the fans that are there to cheer or boo the wrestlers.

Last month, I went to two different shows that featured these very kinds of fans I am talking about. This group of amazing fans is loud, energetic and stands out in the crowd with their random florescent colored fuzzy hats, boas, and t-shirts.

Yes, if you haven’t heard of them, they are the exclusive “Fuzzy Hat Club.” Founder Lynny “NipplerKnocker” Johnson started out buying some hats as a joke and it then became a revolution. With members ranging in ages from seven and up, they really know how to have a good time.

Mainly supporting the Illinois area federations they have supported Rampage Pro Wrestling, All American Pro and MECW. This group of fun loving fans appreciate the independent wrestlers. Men like Krotch, Sage Ramsey, and Dewey “Booger” Dawson , Martial Law and The Bayou Outlaws are just few of their favorite wrestlers they have seen in action.

I actually got to hangout with them at MECW recently. The President, Terry (Panther) and Vice President, Jeff (Chord) gave me a lot of information on this unique gang of fans. To be a member, all you need to do is approach the founder, president and/or vice president and ask.

The rules of initiation are to wear a colored fuzzy boa for at least three wrestling events, then you are granted a fuzzy hat and t-shirt. Painless, but it insures that you are not just walking away with the hat and the group doesn’t ever see you again. Currently the fuzzy hat club has more than 25 members and keeps growing.

The Fuzzy Hat Club actually has meetings and get-togethers every month to pay their monthly $5 dues to insure that all members may attend the next upcoming event scheduled.

I asked them what they would change about independent wrestling if they could and their reply was nothing and it was all great. Wrestling brought this group together and made them a special kind of family.

As a federation, I would love to have this group in my crowd to bring lots of laughter, chanting and energy.
