The Golden Circle: Two Matches

Posted by flairwhoooooo on November 2, 2009

By Greg Anthony

Straight from rasslinriotonline.com

As many of you are probably like me and are lifelong wrestling fans, I have seen a lot of matches. Now finding matches to watch now is relatively easy now with youtube and some of the other outlets out there. However before the internet I traded tapes to see the early days of ECW because I had heard so much about it but hadn’t seen it. I’ve been asked so many times what’s my favorite match? Well, that would be next to impossible. There are so many great matches that I watch over and over like HBK vs Bret in the original Iron Man match, Bobby Eaton vs Arn Anderson for the WCW TV Title, Terry Gordy vs Steve Williams for the UWF Title, Four outstanding matches from The Great American Bash ’88, HBK vs HHH for World Title on RAW from San Antonio. But there are only two matches I credit with really cementing the fact I wanted to be a pro wrestler, so if you want to blame someone blame them.

RIC FLAIR VS RICKY STEAMBOAT 2/3 FALLS FOR THE NWA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
APRIL 2, 1989

Its no secret who my favorite wrestler of all time is, Ric Flair but Steamboat isn’t running far behind. I was 7 years old when I waited on pins and needles for the much anticipated 2 out of 3 falls match at Clash of the Champions VI. When the day finally come, I was not disappointed. I sat there in awe for this almost hour classic. I had said for years that I wanted to be a wrestler but after watching this match I KNEW I had to become a wrestler. That’s how I looked at the match with a 7 year olds eyes now I look at it as just a masterpiece of work. This was work not choreography, the ability to go out there and create a great match on the fly, in the ring. Even though the following match between these two in Nashville is considered the best of their series with a fast paced 20 minute up and down match it was that 2/3 falls that really hooked me.

Now the other match is pretty much a 180 from the Flair/Steamboat classic just mentioned. Its important for a whole different reason.

THE UNDERTAKER VS MANKIND: HELL IN A CELL
KING OF THE RING 1998

Everyone knows the match, everyone knows the bumps, everyone knows how important this one match is to the career of Mick Foley. Well, its important to mine as well. I had just turned 17 about 3 weeks before and I was seriously considering when I turned 18 to take the leap and try to make my way in pro wrestling. I sat at a friends house as we watched the King of the Ring pay per view. I don’t think anyone knew what we would all witness that night.

When Undertaker threw Mankind off the cell crashing down through the announcers table, everyone I was watching with stood up in complete amazement. The match was over but what an ending or so we thought until Foley came off the stretcher and climbed once again to the top of the cage. Only this time he wasn’t thrown off but choke slammed through to the “unforgiving” mat. Once again, we all stood up in amazement. Just when I thought I had run the gambit of emotion for a match, out come the tacks! We all stood up, yet again. When Taker tombstoned Foley for the 1,2,3.. we had witnessed the single greatest effort in wrestling history and we stood one last time for a living room, pay per view party standing ovation.

Now, yes this match made me want to be a pro wrestler. But no that doesn’t mean I wanted to be hurled off a 20 foot structure breaking several bones on the way down or slammed through said structure giving me a concussion and few less teeth. What it did was make me realize that if I wanted to be a wrestler than I would care no less about it than Mick Foley. It made me realize that the fictional Mankind may have loved pain but very real Mick Foley loved pro wrestling, pro wrestling fans and that’s why he did what he did. I would give no less, because I promise that’s what wrestling deserves and when “The Golden Boy” Greg Anthony makes a promise its as good as gold.

Pro Wrestling Showcase

“Pro Wrestling Showcase” Focuses Energy on Action for All Ages

Missouri Wrestling Revival (MWR), in cooperation with High Voltage Wrestling Midwest and NWA Dynamo Pro Wrestling, gives the motto “Giving Back to Midwest Pro Wrestling” added depth with a very special showcase show entitled “Pro Wresting Showcase” on November 14, 2009 in Granite City, IL at the River’s Edge Reception Center.

In the main event of the evening, “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt puts his money where his mouth is, defending the Wrestling Revival Cup for only the second time since he was awarded it by MWR in 2008. Wyatt finds his open challenge met by “The Future” Donovan Ruddick and Arya Daivari. Ruddick, standing 6’9” and weighing in at around 280 pounds, is coming hot off the heels of a high profile victory over another man issuing an open challenge. Ruddick could find himself the spoiler once again, but Daivari will bring his ruthless Middle Eastern athleticism and attitude to the main event.

In the Midwest, classic tag teams reminiscent of the golden age of pro wrestling are alive and well. In Granite City, four of these teams will converge in two matches that are sure to please young and old alike. One match features quite possibly the most celebrated and traveled tag team of the four, the Northstar Express (Darin Corbin & Ryan Cruz), going head to head with the team St. Louis fans might not be inclined to claim as their own due to their antics in the ring, B.A.B.E.WATCH (Brandon Aarons & Brandon Espinosa).

The second tag team contest will feature Louisiana’s finest, the Bayou Outlaws (Aaron Masterson & Mad Dog McDowell) trying to steal momentum from the Kansas City Connection’s Mark Sterling and Mike Sydal. Sydal, the younger brother of World Wrestling Entertainment’s Evan Bourne, recently stunned Granite City wrestling fans by saying he no longer considered St. Louis his home. Under Mark Sterling and Jeremy Wyatt’s watch, Sydal is proving to be cunning and calculated, but the Bayou Outlaws look to test this fairly new team with a tried and true tag team strategy developed from match after match of experience.

The lovely Santana G will be in attendance on the eve of her biggest test to date against current NWA Women’s Champion MsChif. Also scheduled to appear are “Canadian Sex Icon” Ryan Slade, “Unbreakable” Zach Thompson, “6% Body Fat” Rob James, Eric Allen and “Rockstar” Jimmy Rockwell.

“Pro Wrestling Showcase” is determined to give the fans more of what they want and less of what they do not.

Doors open at 6:45PM with an opening bell time of 7:30PM. Tickets are $12, with children 7 years old and younger getting in for free.

The River’s Edge Reception Center (formerly the Army Depot) is located at 1635 W. 1st Street, Granite City, IL, 62040. For more information, call (417) 650-8086.

Missouri Wrestling Revival, High Voltage Wrestling Midwest, and NWA Dynamo Pro are committed to family friendly pro wrestling action at affordable prices.

10 Questions for the All American Pro Wrestling Champion Shawn Shultz

Posted by flairwhoooooo on November 1, 2009

All American Pro Wrestling Champion Shawn Shultz

Years Wrestling: 9
Trained by: Scott Bishop originally
First match: Vs. Brian Nelson
Finishing maneuver:DDT

Date, place and who you beat to become AAPW Champ: Shane Rich May 9, 2009 at Powerhouse Athletics in Mt. Vernon IL.

In this installment I am joined with one of the best kept secrets in the MWR Coverage area. The All American Pro Wrestling Champion: Shawn Shultz.

Brian Kelley:
Shawn I know that you are one of the most booked wrestlers in wrestling, so thank you for taking the time to answer 10 Questions with the Champ.

Brian Kelley:
1) We just asked the fans who they felt were the most exciting Champion in the MWR coverage area. Unfortunately with you being so active down in the south and with Ring of Honor your exposure has been limited since you defeated Shane Rich for the AAPW title. You are one of the most hated but talented wrestlers today but very few in our area know this. What do you have to say to the fans who are unaware of the name Shawn Shultz ?

Shawn Shultz:
If you haven’t been able to come out and see me action come out and see any of the AAPW shows I’m on or any show I’m on,i love feed back from people and i love hearing the feed back from fans that have just seen me for the first time, that is always exciting for me!

Brian Kelley:
2) You are nicknamed “ The Modern Day Viking” where does that come from?

Shawn Shultz:
Lol actually Tony Lucassio has been a good friend of mine even before he started managing me and he loves the Nat Geo Channel and he was watching a special on vikings and the show said vikings trained everyday to be the best fighters and they went from town to town taking over… so he called me and said “hey man you are like a modern day viking” lol

l_99ad7e7c5de262628c67e9aa524f622b

Brian Kelley:
3)
You have been fortunate to have been surrounded by talented people in your career. People like Bert Prentice, Chris Michaels, Chase Stevens and none other than Tracy Smothers. What advice from any of these individuals comes to mind that have helped you come as far as you have?

Shawn Shultz:
Wow what a question!!!! Man the advice i have gotten from these guys would take me forever to tell all of it, but what comes to mind is once when i started getting a bit of an ego tracy told me “you see all the same people on your way up that you see on your way down so careful how you treat people!” Tracy is a gift given to wrestling that I wish more guys in the business had the honor of being around! Chris Michaels showed me how to make a match beautiful and look effortless.Chase showed me how to party. Bert, wow talk about a guy that knows every aspect of the business, if you can sit back and just listen to Bert talk sometimes you can learn so much and you can understand how he has lasted so long in this business!

Brian Kelley:
4) Many a time wrestlers are asked who their favorite wrestle growing up was. Often the answer will be the Icon Sting; you had the opportunity to be in a movie on the life of Sting. What was that experience like and who were the people you look up too before you got into the sport?

Shawn Shultz:
Man, i have to be honest i was never a huge sting fan growing up, but i became one after being in the movie because the guy was so kind and respectful to everyone in it and he is one of the guys that makes you feel like you around a star just because he seems larger than life. My favorites growing up were Curt Hennig, Brian Pillman, Dean Malenko, and Jerry Lynn.

Brian Kelley:
5)
On April 25th in Nashville Illinois you went toe for toe with then AAPW Champion Shane Rich and lost in a controversial finish where you claimed to have grabbed the bottom ropes before the three count. On May 9th in a rematch in Mt Vernon Illinois you defeated Shane Rich for the title and have since beat him in a second time. Rich is one of the most talented wrestlers in the Midwest how were you able to get the edge on the Serial Thriller?

Shawn Shultz:
One word, experience! You are right though Shane Rich is one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met in wrestling and he is a great example of the talent that is in the Midwest area.

Brian Kelley:
6)
Belts are in jeopardy when you enter a promotion. Shortly after claiming the AAPW title you went to NWA Dynamo Wrestling in Kansas on May 23rd to defend your NWA Mid America TV title against Shorty Biggs and Jeremy Wyatt (A man who also has a mean streak) Wyatt earlier in the year had a classic match at AAPW against the then Champ Shane Rich and came up very close to holding the title that you now own. Wyatt is known as “The Belt Collector” and felt that he had added another one to his record when he pinned Shorty Biggs to win the match. The problem was he had to pin you for the title. A match between you two could be a surefire classic. Who have been some of your favorite battles in your career?

Shawn Shultz:
Real fast NWA Dynamo is great show and they treated me great there and i would love to take one of “The Belt Collector”‘s Belts. My favorite matches were in the NWA Rocky Top(Knoxville, TN) days against one of Ricky Morton‘s trainees name Brad Thomas! Brad is one of the most talented guys I’ve ever been in the ring with and it seems like we were really doing something every time we were in the ring together. Also I had one of my favorite matches with Joey Mathews(Mercury from the WWE) at the fairgrounds in Nashville, TN. Joey is on a level all is own and he brought me to my next level in that one match! Jerry Lynn and I tear it up every time we are in the ring together!

Brad Thomas

Brian Kelley:
7) Your hard work and perseverance has allowed you to be blessed with training at former WWE developmental company Deep South Wrestling under the tutelages of Bill Demont for your first two stints and old friend DR Tom Pritchard in your final visit. What were the differences in the philosophy of these two wrestling minds?

Shawn Shultz:
Oh man, honestly I think Dr. Tom maybe one of the best teachers in the world and he helped me a lot before he went to deep south because we were together a lot in the Indy’s but he has a great way of teaching and he is the man who taught me that if i feel it is correct and i make it look correct, everyone else with think it is correct as well! Tom helped me more than I think he realized because I actually listened. When it comes to Bill you are talking about a guy that loves this business soooo much and it shines through every time you talk to him! Bill was big on being in great ring shape and even though I wasn’t there for the weekly training days I heard everyone talk about the killer cardio! I want to thank Bill and Tom for all the help!

l_7f07ded9a4cc2520af8f736d73b353ed

Brian Kelley:
8)
Former Ring of Honor Champion Jerry Lynn, Bobby Eaton and Ricky Morton have also had a hand in your training. With your education of so many greats in the sport I noticed on your website Shawnshultzweebly.com you stated that you will be starting training serious, passionate, and hard working wrestlers. On the site I was impressed of this statement “training consist of learning the basics until you believe that they are ready to have a match. You will also take the responsibility of getting you your first 5 bookings so he can make sure everything is handled correctly” Shawn, In the ring you are hated but no one can deny the hard work that you put in the squared circle and training regimen. I am asked many times at shows and via e-mail from young men and women asking where to get training?. Why is it important to get proper training from the start?

Shawn Shultz:
Unfortunately, it is really easy to get into wrestling right now and a lot of guys don’t care if they train people well or get trained well. My thing is every time I’m in the ring with someone that has done it in this business or just talking to a legend I am still training and learning. The object of pro wrestling is to make money and if you aren’t trained correctly and really don’t know the what and how and when and where or wrestling you will never be taken seriously enough to make money!

Brian Kelley:
9)
You are managed by Tony Lucassio who brags on having a 500lb attitude to go along with his 90lb big mouth! The two of you have traveled around the United States and now bring to the net a very interesting Internet TV Show staring the two of you called the SHULTZ AND LUCASSIO SHOW. What can fans come to expect on the site?

Shawn Shultz:
To be entertained and laugh! Tony and I love being on the road and we love all the crazy characters that are in the Indy’s so we just wanted to share that with the world!
l_1ec5e54b4f3f4c7abe6fcfbbf97f0091

Brian Kelley:
10)
This past October in Nashville Illinois you defended your AAPW Championship against the ultra popular and red hot Curly. Curly and you are like night and day in style which seemed to cause you problems at first but in the end you would deliver a vicious DDT for the win. MWR Fans will not have to wait long to get to see you in action when you return December 5th at All American Pro Wrestling. To take Edmund “LIVEWIRE McGuire who won 3 matches in a tournament in West Frankfort, IL. On Saturday October 24th. He defeated Carnage, “Playboy” Paul Rose, and Mike Masters to wina shot for your title. The ever popular McGuire is on a roll. Any thing you want to say to the #1 contender for your title?

Shawn Shultz:
Wait, what? Its McGuire?? I didn’t hear of this! That can’t be right!!! I gotta call AAPW!!

Independent Hardcore Wrestling October 17th Recap. Cowboy Bob Orton vs “Bloody” Harker Dirge, Ian Rotten vs. Mephisto 2

Posted by flairwhoooooo on October 29, 2009

Independent Hardcore Wrestling returned to Dupo Illinois with their third show of the year with a WWE Legend in the house.

Before the matches began IHW honored their friend and fellow wrestler Zachary “Napalm” Porter. The Midwest wrestling scene was sadden after the horrific events that saw Napalms life taken as well as the mother and father of his girlfriend in a brutal murder. A touching video played for the crowd in attendance that showcased Napalm the wrestler and person. Thanks to IHW I am going to share with you the “Tribute to Napalm”

The night started off with a little wacky and crazy action that the Dupo crowd seemed to love as Poo Doo the Cow took on Farmer Billy Hills. I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard Ring announcer Luke Roberts ask “How much does a cow weigh?

Ladies and gentleman I give you …POO Doo the Cow(Photo Credit Brian “Flair” Kelley)

All jokes aside the crowd was buzzing with MOOOOOO and Holy COW chants. In the end I found out that a cow could climb the ropes as Poo Doo the Cow hit Hills with a flying head but for the victory.

This prompted ECW original and Hardcore Legend Ian Rotten to enter the ring and cleared both Poo Doo and Billy Hills who was not amused with Poo Doo the Cow and more importantly was sicken about the low life who had taken the life of Napalm getting applause from the Dupo Crowd. Rotten stated “Mephisto later tonight we go to war, I am asking that you come out here”. Mephisto entered the ring and Rotten spoke about the loss of the wrestling world with Rotten losing his good friend Chris Candido while Mephisto lost his friend Napalm. Rotten then said he would be happy to fight Mephisto in a match for one mans honor. That this match would be not the real wrestling of sports entertainment but real full contact kick ass beats somebody down so if you will give me the pleasure I will give you the pleasure to tear this son of B**CH down. With Mephistos guard down Ian Rotten attacked to let Mephisto know that he doesn’t care about him at all!! Later tonight Mephisto’s career is coming to an end.

Up next one of the most underrated wrestlers Billy McNeil taking on Canada’s favorite wrestler Sean Vincent. Two guys that can really put on a show with there quick explosive moves. McNeil is truly electrifying while no one understands how to change momentum of a match like Vincent.

Back and forth these two warriors battled. Vincent thought he had the victory with a little help from the ropes but McNeil willed his way out of it into his own pinfall victory to shock Vincent.

The next match saw Shawn Almighty going one on one with former tag team partner Ian Storm. These two are new to me but both posse’s size as well as agility to make a run at anyone’s promotions singles titles.

Anger was evident as they battled inside and out of the ring. Storm was ruthless as he wrapped the leg of Storms on the outside turnbuckle. Shawn Almighty turned the tide when he rolled up Storm for the 1-2-3. Almighty’s celebration would be short lived as Mr. Late Nite came to the ring with his protégé Cabal and Graves attacked Almighty. In for the save came the ST Louis debut of Dan the Man and the Dixie Land Destroyer.

The ref rang the bell for Dan the Man and Dixieland Destroyer to take on Cabal and Graves in tag team action. Graves and Cabal had the power advantage on Dan the Man till Dan put on his cape that allowed him to knock down the much bigger Cabal and Graves.

MR Late Nite made his presence felt when he was able to get the Destroyer’s attention diverted by having him chase him in the locker room. This allowed Cabal and Graves to double team Dan the Man for the victory. The Dixieland Destroyer would return to clear the ring but it was too late as MR Late Nite had lead his team to victory.

In a grudge match between the ST Louis Invitational tournament champion Brandon Aarons went head to head with the man who felt that he should of won the trophy Eric Allen in a match billed as a Peorian Pride street fight title match.

These two young wrestlers went at each other with a vengeance. Ladders, handcuffs and chairs were used to bruise and battered each other. The crowd was easily on Aarons side as Let’s go Brandon lets go filled the room up trying to rejuvenate the Brandon as Allen pounded his arch enemy with all his might.

Allen set up a ladder in the corner along with a table, but the tables leg wouldn’t stand up which may allowed Aarons to get his wits together. Allen then found himself in a bad situation when Aarons delivered a chair shot at the top of the ladder sending Allen crashing on to the table.

A dive from the ladder onto the table from Aarons gains him another victory at IHW.(Photo Credit Brian “Flair” Kelley)

The table held strong for the moment but it would be Aarons coming from the top of the ladder on top of Allen that would send the table into pieces and give Aarons the Peorian title.

As Aarons was celebrating his hard fought victory his tag team partner Brandon Espinosa entered the ring not amused. Espinosa stated that he was not pleased that Aarons was pampering to the fans and that it was not the fans that had help him (Brandon Espinosa) become one of the PWI top 500 wrestlers in the world, it was himself that had made it happen.

He told Aarons to watch his match with that bum Kurt Styles later in the night too see how wrestling for yourself had its advantages.

After intermission we would see if Brandon Espinosa could back his words by taking down Kurt Styles. From the get go Espinosa went after Styles. You have to give it to Styles as he showed a lot of heart but the truth of the matter is (and I hate to say this) Brandon Espinosa is one of the top wrestlers in the Midwest. Espinosa took it to Kurt Styles for the victory.
IHW Oct 17th 2009 105

The next contest was an honor for the fan in me as I got to photograph a WWE Legend and one of the first wrestlers that I ever got to see on TV Cowboy Bob Orton as he went to battle the PWE Champion “Bloody” Harker Dirge. I was able to catch up with the PWE Champion Dirge earlier in the night. He had these words for Orton and a shout out for the MWR Fans to vote for him to be the 2009 MWR fans Wrestler of the Year poll. If you have not voted please check it out here.

Cowboy Bob Orton had a special guest with him on this evening, his son, Nathan Orton. The Dupo crowd was red hot for St LOUIS Own Orton; in return the champion looked to slow down the energy of the crowd by stalling and complaining to the ref.

I won’t lie to you I got caught up in the moment and became a fan as well while taking pictures. Dirge repeatedly choked Cowboy Bob Orton, Nathan who sat at ringside cheering on his dad could not take anymore, and like his brother Randy has a very dangerous kick that he delivered to the PWE Champion from the outside. The ref DQ’D Cowboy allowing Dirge to retain the title.

The next match saw Steven Kennedy taking on Bucky Collins in a one on one match up. I had never seen Collins prior to this night but was very impressed with him as these two really had a solid match up.

Steven Kennedy continued his rise to the top of the Midwest with a win against Collins on this night. I look forward to checking out more of Collins in the area.

It would take a while to get the ropes down and put up the barb wire, meanwhile Luke Roberts pointed out to the crowd the damage that the barb wire presented but demonstrated how it could slice through an aluminum can. That is one a reason why I write for a wrestling site and not in the squared circle. I was excited to see Ian Rotten vs. Mephisto 2.

For the ones who state they don’t like Hardcore, I respect that and think no less of you. Let me say that you know what you are getting at when you go to a promotion and the name of it is Independent Hardcore Wrestling expect to see some hard hitting ruthless action.

Ian Rotten went after Mephisto from the start. At one moment Rotten was raking Mephsitos head in the barb wire, if having your head opened with the sharp barb wire wasn’t enough for the hometown warrior, Mephsito’s hair was tangled up for a moment luckily for him (or maybe not) Rotten yanked his head and hair off it. The brutality continued with thumbtacks and light bulbs. Chair shots and forks delivered the damage in this war.

The beginning of the end for Mephisto as the master goes to work(Photo Credit Brian “Flair” Kelley)

Words can’t describe this contest. Rotten got some wire cutters to cut the barb wire ring and wrap Mephisto up then proceeded to cut him with a broken glass bottle demanding that he quit. When he wouldn’t Rotten went crazy and hit the referee Eric Davis with a chair as well as a security guard and Max Archer. Rotten then took a belt and wrapped it around the neck of Mephisto. Dan the Man ran into the ring to make the save, but in one of the smartest moves I have seen he backtracked and went back to the locker room. Rotten now with no one to stop him. sent Mephisto hanging from the top rope barb wire. Stating that his job was done. He had finished off the hometown favorite Mephisto.

Matt Murphy: Creating a Memorable Character and Creativity

Posted by flairwhoooooo on October 27, 2009

Chapter 3: Creating a Memorable Character

As I said before, a professional wrestler is a salesman. It’s nothing new; it has always been that way. Not only does the wrestler sell the story of his match, he is sells himself as a character. And while not everybody has to–or should–have an outrageous gimmick, it’s important to be unique. Until a wrestler is truly established at any level, it benefits his character if it can be described in a word or short phrase: cowboy, Indian, wizard, or superhero. Somebody watching WWE for the first time will remember “the teacher” but will not likely remember Matt Striker’s name.

No matter how well a wrestler might execute a dive to the outside of the ring or how well his transition from headlock to hammerlock might look, a wrestler will never be signed if WWE doesn’t see the potential for dollar signs when the wrestler is seen.

Take your garden-variety good worker. Most aspects of his game are solid, but unless he is Evan Bourne his moves are not likely going to get him signed by WWE. There are at least 50 unsigned American workers in the business who are probably better than most of the guys in WWE but who have zero marketability. But the majority of them are the same: they look like Dean Malenko, imitate Malenko and Benoit inside the ring, and there is nothing that sets one apart from the next.

An important part of any gimmick is that the wrestling gear complements the character. And I do mean wrestling gear. Tights, trunks, and/or a singlet, wrestling boots, and knee pads. Not jean shorts and a Nirvana T-shirt. Of course, there are Raven cases where a gimmick calls for clothing different from the standard wrestler’s attire, but in general wrestlers should wear wrestling gear. There are numerous places to get gear (I recommend Highspots.com because they have sold gear to many guys I know and I have yet to hear a complaint). Don’t be a cheapskate; your gear is an investment in your dream.

I also encourage the wrestler to develop his in-ring style to fit the character he’s portraying. How serious would people take the Undertaker if his signature move was the Ho Train? It just doesn’t fit him. Too many guys stop being their character the moment the bell rings, but that just reminds the people that it’s just some dude in the ring making pretend. It drives me nuts to see somebody with a sinister gimmick who is scary and evil coming to the ring, then 20 seconds into the match he’s complaining to the referee about a hair pull.

When it comes to creating characters, keep it simple but be different. Once your character is established, its complexities can gradually be revealed. A later chapter, “Connecting With the Audience,” will further discuss this. Don’t make your initial character so complex that a person needs to read a 30-page bio to understand your character.

Like television characters, the developed wrestling character shouldn’t be too complicated. You should be able to sum up a character with a few bullet points. Let’s look at the lead characters from Friends (don’t pretend like you didn’t watch it, Tough Guy).

Monica: Control freak obsessed with cleanliness. She was fat in high school until she started using the Rapid Tone diet review, never backs down from a competition, and takes pride in her cooking.

Rachel: High-maintenance and often self-centered. Spoiled daddy’s girl who walked away from her chance at the easy life in pursuit of finding true happiness.

Phoebe: Quirky, ditzy, modern-day hippie. An environmentalist and a bad singer. She’s tried everything once.

Chandler: Smart-ass jokester with a screwed-up family life. Often the butt of the jokes.
Ross: Neurotic paleontologist whose wife left him for another woman. All of his relationships end in disaster.

Joey: Promiscuous failing actor. He’s dumb as a box of rocks but has innocent charm.

These characters were developed like this when the show debuted and, though they evolved, their original traits remained throughout the series. They stayed true to their original characters (even Phoebe, whose character was all over the place but always stayed true to her character’s core). The writers simply created situations to which these faulted characters reacted.

The same could be said for wrestling characters like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, the ass-kicking, beer-drinking redneck who didn’t trust anybody. Babyface or heel, nearly all dealings with the “Texas Rattlesnake” ended the same way.

It’s said that the best gimmicks are those which are an extension of oneself. I can see where that might be true to a certain degree, but I think that a wrestler often has a habit of taking only his good traits and using those for the character. We are all flawed and our flaws are what makes each of us an individual. Our redeeming qualities–or lack thereof–and choices we make are what determines whether people love or hate us. Even superheroes are created with flaws.

I hate when heels tell me they cheat because they’re just not nice guys. That’s lazy. I think that the fans need to be able to relate to both babyfaces and heels. It’s the wrestler the fans agrees with that is the babyface. It’s the decisions the character makes which determines on which side of the fence he plays. One example of a character I thought was a well-developed heel was Stan Hansen. During his promos, he would talk about how he busted heads because he needed money to feed his fat wife and litter of children back home. People can relate to that (and today he’d probably be a babyface), but the ruthless way he brutalized his opponents in that era made him a villain.

Don’t over-think this. A wrestler who, as a child, watched helplessly as his dad took the easy way out from beneath a mountain of debt, then the kid lived on the streets until he met an elderly retired wrestler who taught him about wrestling and about life, then caught mono right before his first shot at a title, and was nursed back to health by an Indian medicine man, then…that’s too much. Try three good and three bad character traits as a starting point.

The key to a good gimmick is marketability. When you come up with a character, try to picture merchandise opportunities, and ask yourself these questions. To which demographic will I appeal? Can I see my new gimmick on a lunchbox? When I’m selling pictures, does my character in the photo look like a fan’s next-door neighbor, or is there something about me that catches the eye? Has the gimmick been done before on a national scale? If so, is it outdated or can I modernize it? If it hasn’t been done before, why not? Why will people care about it? Can I pull off the gimmick?

According to Tony Atlas, when a wrestler walked down the street 30 years ago, people said, “Either he’s a wrestler or the circus is in town.” That’s not the case these days. In fact, it’s often hard to tell the difference between the wrestlers and the fans, let alone pick out a wrestler in a crowd.

Don’t use a rip-off gimmick. Back in late-1990s and early-2000s, there were countless guys doing the Doink the Clown gimmick. While a few fans knew that the man under the mask was not really Matt Borne, Steve Lombardi, Dusty Wolfe, or Ray Appollo (who all really were Doink in WWE), most fans thought the man beneath the makeup was the “real” Doink. This was garbage indie bull-crap, cheating customers, and that’s bad business.

During my rookie year, I did a show at a military base where The Honky Tonk Man versus The Undertaker was the advertised main event. The promoter booked a few familiar names–The Honky Tonk Man, Samu, Brian Lee, and Tom Brandi–and billed Lee as The Undertaker. None of the wrestlers were happy about Lee using the gimmick, including Lee himself, but the promoter argued that since Lee worked as the Fake Undertaker on a WWE pay-per-view, he was not falsely advertising (though he used a photo of Mark Calaway, the real Undertaker, on the poster). The fans smelled garbage the moment The Undertaker was announced and Lee came to the ring. The crowd of 2,500 booed the brief match and, to my knowledge, no other wrestling event has been sold to the Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri military base since that event in February 2000.

Chapter Four: Creativity

My favorite thing about wrestling is that the door is wide open for people who can use their knowledge and skills creatively and uniquely. Some people are born creative and others have to work hard for it, but not every great wrestler is highly creative and not every creative wrestler is great. The key is to creativity is to never fall in love with your own ideas: there’s usually somebody with veto power who can completely shoot down your idea or alter it beyond recognition. Even if you’re the person with the final say in things, that doesn’t mean that you should always push your ideas down fans’ throats. If the fans crap on an idea, then the promoter needs to be attentive enough to identify that and change things.

Be cautious of who hears your ideas before you have a chance to pitch them to those who matter. The person who says he isn’t too crazy about the idea you just created for a new gimmick just might be the guy who shows up on TV using that exact gimmick.
Not all of your ideas will be good ones. Even the best creative minds find themselves throwing plenty of crap against the wall to see what sticks. Never be afraid to sound foolish: at least you’re showing ambition.

Don’t be selfish with your creative thinking. Know what’s happening around you and offer ideas for other wrestlers and for storylines that don’t concern you. Sometimes it just takes removing yourself from the picture to get the wheels turning, and then you can focus on creating things for yourself.

Think outside the box. A good storyteller is abnormally observant of the world and people around him. Often, he will get a story idea from something he sees or experiences in his everyday life. As a wrestler, you should consider yourself a storyteller and should be constantly observing.

Inside the ring, I liked to handicap myself to force creativity. I would tell myself, “No reversing the Irish whip, clotheslines, stomps, or eye rakes this match.” Then I would follow those guidelines and creatively avoid those maneuvers. Try it sometime.
