This is from a small piece from Dr Tom Prichard’s blog that showcases just a bit of what you can learn from one of todays’ top trainers in wrestling.

I was asked recently about bringing old school wrestling back and if I thought it could work. It reminded me of what my mentor Houston wrestling promoter Paul Boesch once said:

I like fishing. I also like strawberries. When I go fishing, I put worms on the hook. Fish like worms so I’m not going to try and give them what I like.

In other words if people come to see old school wrestling and story telling, great. But if you promote something YOU like and no one comes to your shows, what’s the point? The point is “give ‘em what they want” or you won’t be running for long! I remember Houston having a solid line up of stars and the main events always featured something special. I might not have liked the over the top gimmicks, but enough people did that Houston was a hot bed for action in the 1970s.

Harley Race, Johnny Valentine, The Funks, Jack Brisco, Wahoo McDaniel, The Great Malenko, Fritz Von Erich, Jose Lothario, The Great Mephisto, The Infernos, The Von Braunners, Toru Tanaka, The Spoiler, Ernie Ladd, Dusty Rhodes, Bill Watts and many others provided believable old school matches that might hold up today if fans were educated to it after a while.

But times have changed and with everything at a click of a remote control, the attention span of today’s fans is hard to contend with. I explained it would take patience to build a match and tell a story. The story sometimes built from week to week with undercard stories developing along the way.

I wish that formula could work but it would take a lot of talented veterans and rookies along with a solid promotional model to make it work. The original process consisted on the premise that wrestling was actually competitive and not pre-determined. Feuds over championships and personal issues were the focus and fans got the message that “these guys really don’t like each other.” The cat’s been out of the bag for years about the in ring performance and the competitive spirit backstage is where the real drama lies.

The nature of sports entertainment creates a sense of getting ahead at any cost and can carry over into the ring. People used to debate the legitimacy of wrestling where as now they are more interested in the politics backstage.

There was a time when the guys went out, had a match and either got over or didn’t. And that determined who was in the main event. Now it has been said and insinuated that it’s more who you know rather than what you know. That argument only goes so far because PPV and regular TV ratings don’t lie. Eventually the cream will rise. Of course learning the ropes and manipulation are all part of the road to the top.

The old timers knew how to manipulate and get their way. Buddy Rogers was one of the best and there’s enough people still alive who knew the antics of the original Nature Boy who can verify and confirm such stories. The tradition continues and is a rite of passage for anyone with the ambition and drive to do whatever it takes to succeed.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

There’s a lot of opportunity on the pro wrestling scene these days. To get a developmental deal is just the beginning. The goal is to get on the main roster and make an impact. How? Watch, listen and learn from the ones who’ve been there and are there now.

We can’t go back in time but we can tell stories in the ring. Working a body part in new and interesting ways has always been a key ingredient to a good/great match. The difference is in the emotion and feeling. People can tell when a performer is into his gig or phoning it in.

I’m a firm believer that you must enjoy what you’re doing to be convincing. If you don’t believe what you’re doing, how is anyone else going to? Too many times I’ve seen guys do high impact moves only to get up ten seconds later like nothing fazed them. Then one will win by a school boy. Amazing.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on July 10, 2013

 photo IMG_3557_zps9b95cac3.jpg

Gary Jay pulls out all the stops at the 2013 St Louis Anarchy Circus Maximus against Adam Raw in a 10,000 Thumbtacks match main event !!

One of pro wrestling’s respected tournaments returns in 2013 when the Ted Petty Invitational tournament begins on Friday, September 13, 2013. The great history of the tournament has seen superstars such as Chris Hero, Ace Steel, B.J. Whitmer, Danny Daniels, A.J. Styles, Matt Sydal (WWE’s Even Bourne) , Low Ki, Mike Quackenbush and Drake Younger have all been crowned champions in the tournament. Superstars such as Colt Cabana, CM Punk, Adam Pearce, Christopher Daniels, Ken Anderson, Jerry Lynn, Arik Cannon, Samoa Joe, Austin Aries, Davey Richards, and Bryan Danielson (WWE’S Daniel Bryan)are just a few of the stars that have thrilled fans in matches in the tournament.

With the names of the men that are set to compete in the 2013 TPI tournament there is no doubt that this years winner will go down in history books as one of the best in todays’ sport.

Already set to compete are

1. Drake Younger 2. Jack Thriller 3. Eddie Kingston 4. B-Boy 5. Davey Richards 6. Kyle O’Riley 7. IWA-MS Light Heavyweight Champion Devon Moore 8. Roderick Strong 9. Andrew Everett 10. Chrisjen Hayme 11. ‘Confederate’ Chris Hamrick 12. Necro Butcher 13. Louis Lyndon 14. Flip Kendrick 15. Prince Mustafa Ali 16. BJ Whitmer 17. Dustin Rayz 18. Justin Credible 19. Bad Bones

The promoters at IWA Mid-South Wrestling announced on their Facebook page that the 24th participant would be chosen by you the fans and fellow wrestlers support. One man that is deserving is the man that many claim to be the best kept secret in the wrestling today, Gary Jay.

Gay Jay can be seen wrestling around the country for the land of Anarchy in Texas and St Louis respectfully. He has made an impact at Metro Pro Wrestling in Kansas City, Pro Wrestling Epic in Illinois and AIW.

Adam Raw brutalizes Gary Jay as the two went to a classic in 2013.

Hard working and very entertaining Gary Jay puts his body on the line each and every match for you the fans. It is now time for you to take the time to go to the IWA Mid-South Facebook page and let your voice be heard. Be sure to tell them Gary Jay and WHY he is deserving of being in the tournament.

 photo IMG_3579_zps72f38273.jpg

When it was all said and done Gary Jay was bruised, battered and bloodied but was able to defeat the powerhouse Adam Raw.

Many of the fans and his fellow peers have been quick to come to his support. Straight from the office of IWA MID-SOUTH comes the announcement of what they are looking for “ The guy I hear the most about (OR GIRL) between now and August 14th will be the 24th participant in this years 2013 Ted Petty Invitational… but this ain’t American Idol! Don’t make a fool of yourself! If you ain’t got the goods, don’t have people push for ya!

Let’s take a look at some of men and women that have come to forefront to support Gary Jay in this high honor of being named as a competitor in the 2013 TPI.

Show your support by going to the IWA Mid South Wrestling Facebook.

Dingo Machete I as a former IWA MIDSOUTH CHAMPION whole heartedly endorse Gary Jay for this year’s TPI.

Jonathan Gresham Gary Jay would be a great addition in my opinion.

Joshua Neal Montgomery Gary Jay is consistently one of the best workers on any card he is booked at all over the country.

Kz Chif Gay Jay is a best who can do any style and can go with anyone.

Chris Eston Gary Jay is a great performer, seen him many times and can honestly say I have never seen a bad match from him, always entertaining!!

Phineas Bartleby Crackers Gary Jay is one of the hardest working guys on the indy scene. Great wrestler, a gifted bad guy. Easy to hate because he’s so damn good at what he does.

Alan Anderson Gary Jay is the total package…he can wrestle as well as work the mic and the crowd. I know if I’m going to a wrestling event and Gary Jay is on the card, I know I’ll at least be seeing one great match. Gary Jay never fails to deliver.

Mike Marnin Gary Jay is one of the hardest hitting and most entertaining guys I’ve seen in the ring! You’d be making a huge mistake if you didn’t put him on this TPI!

Pierre Abernathy – Gary Jay is not just someone who would be great in this amazing weekend of wrestling he is someone who would be a asset to the IWA show as a whole going forward. I book Saint Louis Anarchy and Gary is someone who always goes above and beyond for our fans and he does that everywhere he goes. Its time he gets the chances that others have gotten and he gets to show that even though he is small he is a great worker.

David J. McCutcheon Gary Jay, by far. He was lawn-darted into a wall, for Christ’s sake. The thud! Ow! Give him a break before he breaks something.

Billy McNeil Gotta echo what some others have suggested already, Gary Jay. More people need to be exposed to what that guy has to offer. His dedication to putting on the most memorable and entertaining performance of any given night is astounding.

John Meyer please put gary j in the tpi he’s a hard hitting guy and he loves thumb tack matches and anything goes matches put him in a spot thank u.

Andy Dalton I had the pleasure of wrestling Gary Jay in Dallas Texas a few years back…and have followed him (and the Sub Squad all together) since. Garys creative, hard hitting, and an absolute pleasure to watch. Great talent. Gary Jay for the TPI.

Aaron Roy Gary Jay Chops will make you bleed..

Jonathan Culver -Gary Jay. There is little doubt in my mind he will all but kill himself to make this show fantastic.

David Cox Gary J is easily one of the best “unknowns” out there, but he is also one of the nicest and most poliite persons I’ve ever met. The fact that on the few times, I’ve been lucky enough to share a car with him, he always got his trash out and threw it away. Little thing, shows his character. Too me, that’s the most important thing.

Ryan Masters I’ve known Gary Jay since I was 16 (I’m 22 now) and I’ve met a lot of independent wrestlers since then. Out of all the amazing and dedicated workers, Gary stands out not only in the ring but in a way not everyone may notice. I met Gary by working for the company he wrestled for. I helped with the ring set up, ect. To give credit where it’s due, Gary wasn’t alone but he was on a VERY exclusive list of guys who helped put the ring up and help take it down EVERY night. I’ve seen Gary Jay wrestle an hour long war and still stay up until 1am getting the ring where it goes. It wasn’t his ring and he didn’t get paid extra. He was already a main eventer in the company. He did it for one reason and that was because he wanted to. He probably still does it to this day. He cares so much about what he does. The level he’s on is irrelevant because he puts on main event matches no matter where he’s at or who he’s against. I’ve seen Gary play the biggest face in the company, drawing fans with his name, to being the biggest heel in the company. I know what he’s capable of and so do a lot of people at this point. His name is growing and he deserves this spot.

Show your support by going to the IWA Mid South Wrestling Facebook here.

Questions a plenty at SICW as the huge 7/20/13 show in East Carondelet, Illinois is right around the corner.

Posted by flairwhoooooo on July 9, 2013

SICWIs this the moment Chas Wesson has dreamed of? Can he dethrone Ironman Ken Kasa as the Classic Wrestling Champion when Chas and Kasa collide Saturday, July 20 on the SICW card at the East Carondelet Community Center?

Of course, it’s a huge moment for Kasa too as the Ironman makes his first defense of the Classic crown since knocking off Ricky Cruz June 15. Travis Cook, Kasa’s manager, vows to have Kasa at his peak for the July 20 test with Chas, who trained with Shawn Michaels and is one tough cookie who knows how to win.

But there’s more – a whole lot more.

The list of contenders for the Classic title is growing as the remainder of the July 20 lineup demonstrates.

In particular, the tag team co-feature sends Cruz and Chris Hargas against Ron Powers and Flash Flanagan. As former champs, Powers and Cruz want a shot at whoever is on top after Kasa faces Chas. Flanagan nearly captured the crown when he battled Cruz at the Argosy Casino in May, and Hargas upset Flash on a count-out in East Carondelet June 15.

So everyone in the tag affair has a reasonable claim for a title shot – and nobody has any love lost for each other to begin with! According to Powers, Kasa wouldn’t be the champion if – earlier in the evening June 15 – Powers hadn’t nailed Cruz with a piledriver. Flash claims he should have been the champ then anyhow.

Cruz is seething and vows to regain the Classic title as soon as possible.

Don’t forget how, not all that long ago, Powers broke up an arm wrestling contest with Hargas by attacking Chris with a chair. Hargas has long felt he should have a title shot as well.

Plus everyone wants to know does Travis have any relation whatsoever with either or both of Flanagan and Powers.

In addition July 20, Adam Raw has a great opportunity as he meets Mr. Unpredictable, Dave Vaughn. Gary Jackson and The Big Texan (what IS his deal with Cook?)clash. Bobby D puts his win streak on the line against Alexander Rudolph. Heath Hatton is back. So is Shorty Biggs. And there’s more . . .

The midgets end a long absence as Little Cato opposes Beautiful Bobby Dean.

And What About August 9-10 at the GCS Ballpark?
And What About Travis Cook’s rampage?

Whatever happens July 20 will affect the lineup for when the Gateway Grizzlies Celebrate Wrestling’s Legends August 9 and 10 at the GCS Ballpark. In wrestling under the stars August 10, there will definitely be a Classic title match and a one-night Grizzlies’ Grand Masters tournament.

On top of everything, Travis Cook vows he and his crew including Vaughn will cut someone’s hair again July 20. Promoter Herb Simmons says that Herb won’t let that happen. Their dispute becomes nastier every day. The latest is that Travis is challenging – or is it threatening – to get Herb in a situation where Travis shaves Herb bald in the middle of the ring.

And keep in mind all the details at the gorgeous GCS Ballpark August 9 and 10. At the game August 9, Jerry “The King” Lawler throws out the first pitch. Then fans can join not only Lawler, but also Harley Race, Ken Patera, Baron Von Raschke, Larry Matysik and The Rock’s father – alltime great Rocky Johnson in the VIP Room at the stadium.

The next night – Saturday, August 10 – is that blockbuster card under the stars at the GCS Ballpark.

The ingredients are coming together for one most memorable evening.
