Today marks the 50th anniversary for the voice of Wrestling at the Chase,Larry Matysik of being “in” the wrestling business.
We caught up with Larry to get his thoughts on that historic day 50 years ago,
“I got my first paycheck from Sam Muchnick on Oct. 25, 1963, for calling in the results from a Kiel Auditorium card to the Globe Democrat, the Post-Dispatch, and a few radio stations including KMOX Radio. I was shocked when KMOX even put me on-air around 11:30 p.m. for about 45-seconds (or) one minute that night.
“After all, I was only 16 years old. Hard to believe Sam took a chance on me that young. Still boggles my mind and what the hell happened so fast since then?
“By the way, the main event was Cowboy Bob Ellis over Dick the Bruiser on disqualification.
“And I got paid $25!”
Today Larry is renowned as an author for such wrestling books from ECW Press including The50 Greatest Professional Wrestlers of All Time, Brody, Drawing Heat the Hard Way, and Wrestling at the Chase. Fans can still hear Larry cover wrestling for SICW’s Wrestling Explosion TV show. He is SICW’s matchmaker and you can see him each month at East Carondelet, Illinois.
Congrats to my great friend Larry Matysik. Without him the business as we knew it would be forgotten. Last evening Larry and I was awarded the 2013 Kickass award from a group that pays tribute to those that have contributed in some positive in the St. Louis region. When I took the stage after being introduced and mentioned how many remembered Larry, the crowd erupted with cheers and clapping. He is still that household name that everyone remembers.- SICW Promoter Herb Simmons
Will Ron Powers be able to capture the Classic Wrestling Championship from Ken Kasa, thus making him a two time champ?
Ron Powers gets the opportunity to become the Classic Wrestling Champion for the second time when he duels titleholder Ironman Ken Kasa on the SICW card at the East Carondelet Community Center Saturday, Nov. 16.
Will The Big Texan be unmasked or will the Great One Gary Jackson be force to call it a career?
And Gary Jackson risks the end of his career when he tackles The Big Texan who has agreed to put his mask in jeopardy as well.
Powers earned this chance by pinning Kasa to win a tag team decision for the unlikely combo of Powers and Ricky Cruz over Kasa and Flash Flanagan Oct. 19. The decision by Promoter Herb Simmons to give Powers the title match left both Flanagan and Cruz furious. They felt they deserved the bout, Cruz as a former champion who was upset by Kasa last June and Flash because he defeated Powers after a controversial finish in September
But Powers feels that SICW is his home and his overall record was strong enough along with the pin of the champion to persuade Simmons to give Ron the Nov. 16 battle.
:”The Man of Steel” Daniel Eads will tag with Ricky Cruz to meet Bull Bronson and Flash Flanagan
Cruz and Flanagan, who have their own hot rivalry, will be on opposite sides of a tag team affair Nov. 16. Each has a strong young prospect as his partner — it’s Cruz and Daniel Eads against Flash and 410-pound Bull Bronson.
The fans have been pleading to know just who is under the mask of The Big Texan
As to Texan and Jackson, both also solid title contenders, they’ve been butting heads for a couple years. In fact, a head butt by Texan Oct. 19 when the referee was distracted gave Dave Vaughn a win over Jackson.
The angry Jackson demanded a bout with Texan that included Texan unmasking if he lost by pin or submission. The ensuing argument saw Texan agree — if Jackson agreed to end his long, outstanding career should Gary lose. Simmons saw a headline bout and got the deal done. Career versus mask, Jackson against Texan.
Travis Cook returns after taking a guitar shot from the WWE HOF The Honky Tonk Man.
Dave Vaughn
Speaking of Vaughn, like Kasa a client of controversial manager Travis Cook, Vaughn can stop the drive for a title shot by Jake Dirden.
Dave Vaughn and Travis Cook look to derail the red hot Jake Dirden,
Add Vaughn versus Dirden to the Nov. 16 lineup. Cook, feeling better after being smacked by the guitar of Honky Tonk Man Oct. 12, will be back to “advise” both Vaughn and Kasa.
More matches will be added and tickets are available by calling 286-4848.
StricktlyNsane ProWrestling presents SHATTERED DREAMS and BROKEN bones on November 2nd in Crossville, Illinois, A night of action featuring an all-star cast including the former MWR Tag Team of the Year and current StricktlyNsane ProWrestling tag team champions the Hooligans taking on JCW Champ 2 Tuff Tony and MADMAN Pondo, “Crazy” Mary Dobson fresh off her world tour of England and Japan goes one on one against Jordynn Grace and “The Man of Steel”Daniel Eads will challenge for the Heavyweight Championship against JP Lightning.
Believe it or not, that is not all!
Pro Wrestling’s number one hated wrestler in world, Tony Kozina is now the hunted. Long known as a man that can wrestle with the best of them, the former NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion and trainer of ROH great Davey Richards has only became bitter and meaner with each passing day.
StricktlyNsane ProWrestling fans have been furious at Kozina .
During 2013, Kozina has told anyone that would listen that he is the man and that no one there can hang with him in the squared circle. He was quick to use underhanded tactics to defeat popular 2 Tuff Tony much to the dismay of the fans.
It would look as if Kozina would meet his match when he went one on one against former WWE Superstar Eugene, but once again he would cheat to win sending everyone from the front to the back into a fit as he only became more obnoxious than ever.
If the fans thought that had reached their peak of being angry that were sadly mistaken. At the last show Kozina felt that he was not being respected when the promoter matched him up against a man that MWR considers to be one of the Midwest top young wrestle today, Jake Parnell. Kozina would make Parnell pay when he beat him mercilessly while letting everyone know at the same time that no one can stop him.
That may change in less than two weeks when a man that is a master of head games, Lord Goldie (WWE’S GoldDust) makes his way to StricktlyNsane ProWrestling to teach Kozina a lesson on respect.
Will Tony Kozina be able to outsmart Lord Goldie or will Tony Kozina feel the curtain fall once and for all?
Tony Kozina was the special quest on Mark Blands show The Q SHOW and states that he will present Golddust with a Tony Award…that and much more from wrestlings most hated man.
Editor’s note: The thoughts and views that are stated on the Q SHOW do not necessary reflect the views or opinions of anyone here at MWR. Explicit material as well.
KOZ IS BACK! And he has a little on his plate to talk about regarding an upcoming match with a new Tag Team Champion from a little organization called WWE.
Then its rant time. Coming off his rant from the other video series he does with DJ C-Note in the STL area for HOT 104, Mark has a serious issue with Black culture and their gullibility on certain things, especially the BET awards shows that are put out 3-4 times a year. And an issue he has with Panera Bread/St. Louis Bread Company for gouging people on their food prices.
The Daily show released a comedic video regarding Tea Party/Extreme GOP members and how they are destroying the new re-opened federal government over the budget demands that shut it down. Very interesting and funny look at truly out there some people on the right of the aisle happen to be.
Plus BNN with Producer Bobby discussing good ole castration and letter from the listener or two.
