Dory Funk JR thrills fans young and old in St Louis in 2011 at MMWA-SICW

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 24, 2011

By Brian Kelley
With great info from Larry Matysik’s book From the Golden Era-The St. Louis Wrestling Record Book 1959 to 1983

Dory Funk Jr’s connection with the city of St. Louis is etched in stone. During Funk Jr’s historical four year NWA World Championship reign he would defend the title many times in the great city .

On February 11, 1969, in Tampa, Florida Funk captured the NWA World Championship with a victory over Gene Kiniski. Eleven days later on February 22, 1969 Funk would return to ST Louis to settle the score with rival Waldo Von Erich under “Texas Death Match Rules.”

Luck would have it for Waldo Von Erich that Sam Muchnick, Promoter in St. Louis and President of the National Wrestling Alliance changed the match from a Texas Death Match but to a World Title opportunity. The fans would be able to see Funk win a two out of three falls match when Funk won the first fall and Von Erich was not able to continue due to a shoulder injury.

Fans around the world know the name Bobby “The Brain” Heenan as the man who was instrumental in bring Pro Wrestling mainstream with his charismatic ability and quick wit while chasing mega star Hulk Hogan’s WWF (E) title during the Rock and Wrestling era.

Yet it was many years before that in St Louis that Hennan had protégé Black Jack Lanza in line to take the NWA World Championship. The two would sell out the Kiel Auditorium not once but twice, but even with the genius Hennan is Lanza’s corner Dory Funk Jr would not be dethroned.

For the next four years Dory Funk Jr. would defend the NWA World title around the world while bringing sell outs to St Louis with the very best challengers of that day. Fans would see classic matches between Funk Jr. and Dick the Bruiser, Jack and Jerry Brisco, Johnny Valentine, Rufus R. Jones, Baron Von Raschke and Harley Race before losing the title to Race in Kansas City on March 24th 1974.

In 1974 Dory Funk Jr would be the NWA Missouri Champion by defeating Harley Race on May 24th 1974 during a two out of three falls match at the Kiel.

Funk Jr. as the NWA Missouri Champion would get a victory of then NWA World Champion in St Louis on Nov ember 15 1974, Jack Brisco. St Louis announcer and historian Larry Matysik recalls in his book From the Golden Era-The St. Louis Wrestling Record Book 1959 to 1983 “*Dory Funk Jr. beat NWA Champion Jack Brisco, who did retain the title. Lou Thesz, special referee. 1-Brisco was DQ for throwing the bloody Funk over the top rope after 51:30. Neither man scored a fall in the remainder of the one-hour limit. As winner of the only fall, Funk was awarded the victory. But the challenger could not win the title by DQ, nor by winning only one fall of a best-of-three match, so Brisco kept the championship. This was the fifth consecutive battle between Brisco and Dory Jr. in almost four years that went the full one hour limit.

As the Missouri Champion Dory Funk Jr.defeated Killer Kowalski, in his last match in St Louis. Kowalski would go onto be inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame and train current WWE Star Hunter Hearst Helmsey, TNA Knockout Chyna among many others before he passed away on August of 2008.

The great Harley Race would regain the NWA Missouri Championship beating Dory Funk Jr. in a two out of three falls match on February. 21, 1975.

Dory would  return to action for years in St Louis with a notable match on Aug. 6, 1982 at the Kiel against NWA Champion Ric Flair losing a two out of three falls battle.

In all as a World Champion Dory Funk Jr defended the NWA Championship 24 times while drawing over 256,871 total attendances which is an astounding average of 10,703.

This past Saturday in East Carondelet Illinois Dory Funk JR returned to action at the young age of 71 in a three way tag match with partner Chaz Wesson and Gary Jackson against Sean Vincent, Kevin X and CWC Champion Ron Powers.

In a true testament to Dory Funk Jr.’s charisma and talent, I witness fans young and old on their feet at the end of a very entertaining match.

The fans in St Louis still love Dory Funk JR *Photo Credit Brian Kelley *

Dory Funk JR has been inducted in every Wrestling Hall of fame that is creditable including the St Louis Wrestling Hall of Fame. His legacy will always have strong ties to the city of St Louis and thanks to the fine people at MMWA-SICW we had a special moment in wrestling history. Forty one years after his first NWA World title defense in St Louis, Funk Jr. returned to say thanks to the fans of the Midwest.

MWR fans will be thrilled to hear that Dory Funk Jr sat down with Larry Matysik in a special interview that can be purchased in the near future. Look for details on how in the future at MWR.

Results from PWP’s: “International Invasion” – PWP Returns this Saturday

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 23, 2011

Photobucket

1.) Sir Bradley Charles defeated Darin Corbin via “The Long Kiss Good Knight”. This was a very solid opening contest between a still undefeated in PWP SBC, and a returning Darin Corbin. Both men went back and forth and after some very exciting maneuvers including a HUGE dropkick off the top rope, Charles was able to nail his finishing move, and retain his undefeated streak in PWP.

2.) Darren “Thunder” Russell & Branden Juarez wrestled to a no contest. Juarez entered the arena and had some choice words for the crowd. He explained how he has felt held back ever since he came to PWP and that is why he took matters into his own hands. He explained how he took out the “Hardcore Icon” of PWP, Chris Havius last month. He was interrupted however, by Darren “Thunder” Russell! Last month, Juarez laid out Russell with a few MDK maneuvers and Russell explained that he had no intention of being pushed around, and that he didn’t return to PWP to be bullied. He challenged Juarez and had the upper hand in the match until Juarez came back with a huge clothesline. Russell once again came back and attempted a tornado DDT but Juarez reversed into his MDK. However, before the 3 count, he pulled Russell up again, showing that he wanted to hurt him some more. He left the ring and grabbed a chair, but before he was able to use it, Vic Victory ran into the ring and delivered a crazy head scissors takeover to Juarez, immediately followed by a lightning fast suicide dive! The crowd cheered as Victory once again came to the aid of his friend. Victory then got on the microphone and used all his intensity to explain to Juarez that he was sick of him attacking his friends for no reason and that he wasn’t scared of him or anyone. He then said that on May 28th, he would return to the ring to take him on one on one! The crowd cheered as Victory made sure Russell was ok. This will be Victory’s first time in a ring since November 2009 when he vacated the PWP Heavyweight Championship!

3.) Shawn Nautilus defeated Supafli & “Sensational” Sean Cruz in a Triple Threat Match. This was set as a one on one bout between Supafli & Cruz, however Nautilus came out and demanded to be a part of the match. Supafli & Cruz immediately began working on taking the big man out, and after a double dropkick to the head, they achieved that. However neither man would let the other pin Nautilus and they began to attack each other. Cruz eventually nailed Supafli with an incredible Package Piledriver, but the crafty Nautilus immediately threw Cruz out of the ring and stole the 3 count. Nautilus smirked and snuck away. Cruz helped Supafli up in a show of respect after the match.

4.) Matty Star defeated “The Passion” Zac James & “The Canadian Sex Icon” Ryan Slade w/ Axel Greece via Top Rope Falcon Arrow in a Handicapped Match. Matty Star entered the arena to an eruption of applause and “Matty” chants. He demanded that PWP Heavyweight Champion Preston Maxwell come out and give him a rematch for the title since he got screwed last month. Maxwell denied his request and after some back and forth, Maxwell said Matty needs to prove to him he belongs in a championship caliber match. He said if he could beat an “old friend” of his, he’d give him a rematch down the line. Matty of course agreed, and Maxwell returned with PWP Tag Team Champion Zac James. Maxwell then reminded Matty that James was a tag team champion. At that point, Ryan Slade attacked Matty from behind and they began the handicapped match. James & Slade took it to Matty here with the 2 on 1 (3 if you count Greece) advantage. Matty was able to fight back but the Tag Team Champions always kept up on him. James & Slade attempted the Sliced Bread/ Splash Combo that has been winning them matches, however Matty was able to reverse it, nail Slade with a Top Rope Falcon Arrow and win the match! James & Slade were furious however and laid into Matty with their flag until The Beautiful Bodies, Brian Gott & Derek Cornell along with Angelus Layne made the save and ran the champs off!

5.) Jimmy Rockwell defeated Mad Dog McDowell via Count Out. This was a grudge match, after Rockwell shocked the fans last month by turning on his on again off again partner McDowell. McDowell was angry here and you could tell! Rockwell turned the tide however by forcing McDowell into the ring post. Rockwell showed a side of himself no one at PWP has seen before by taking many underhanded tactics to try to win the match. In the end, Rockwell lured McDowell back outside and smashed him into the ring post one more time, rolled back into the ring just in time and got the cheap win via Count Out. McDowell chased after Rockwell, but he split.

6.) “The Anarchist” Arik Cannon defeated Zack Sabre Jr. after a Brain Buster & Glimmering Warlock. This was an added exhibition match to thank all of our wonderful fans! Zack Sabre Jr. is from Kent England, and on a tour through the United States. Arik Cannon made his return after an 11 month absence and had nothing nice to say to the PWP crowd. This match will go down as a MUST SEE. These two men put on a wrestling clinic for the Council Bluffs crowd and it seemed as if Sabre knew every counter maneuver in the book! Sabre had his Arm Bar locked in at one point, but Cannon barely made it to the ropes! After distracting the referee and hitting a low blow on Sabre, Cannon nailed him with a devastating Brain Buster and his signature Glimmering Warlock to pick up the win. It is no exageration to call this one of the single greatest bouts in PWP history!

7.) “The Beautiful Bodies”Brian Gott & Derek Cornell w/ Angelus Layne defeated Joey Daniels & Zack Thompson via “The Beauty Mark” to win the #1 contendership for the PWP Tag Team Championship. Daniels & Thompson had success last month, and on a quest towards the gold, attempted to get through the ever popular Beautiful Bodies. This one started off hot as Thompson and Daniels took control of the match and took turns beating down the Bodies. With the ref distracted, Daniels attempted to cheat, however Layne was able to run in and retaliate with a huge DDT! Daniels barely kicked out, but it seemed as Thompson had had enough as he went to the back, and The Bodies were able to hit their “Beauty Mark” finishing maneuver to win the match & earn a shot at the Tag Team Champions! The champs must not have been pleased as they came immediately to the ring and attempted a further attack, but the Bodies grabbed their Canadian flag and held them at bay! Gott then remarked that since they like to use their flag so much, at the 6th Anniversary Spectacular on May 28th, their Tag Team Championship match will be a FLAG MATCH! James, Slade & Greece were furious but as the Bodies were exiting the ring, a brawl broke out again between the two teams. As they were leaving, Joey Daniels got on the mic, and was extremely angry! He called out Angelus Layne who had interfered in his match. He claimed she shouldn’t be near a wrestling ring and that she should be at home, taking care of babies! It was extremely appalling and Layne was furious. She challenged him to a match but he refused saying that women have no business wrestling. As she was leaving the ring, Daniels kicked her in the head, and remarked that he changed his mind, and for the ref to ring the bell!

8.) Angelus Layne defeated Joey Daniels via Disqualification. Joey was being extremely vicious with Layne, kicking her in the head and choking her among other things. Layne was able to come back however and just as she was gaining momentum, Daniels raked her eyes, then shoved referee Jeff O’Chet directly into her! O’Chet disqualified Daniels as he laughed and went to the locker room. Layne was furious and chased after him saying that things weren’t over between them!

9.) Preston Maxwell defeated Abu Colossus via Gator Roll Choke to retain the PWP Heavyweight Championship. This was a rematch from last year when these two feuded over and over. That ended with a huge Last Man Standing match which “The Big Hurt” won. With the title on the line, Colossus gave Maxwell everything he could. Maxwell locked on his Gator Roll Choke, and Colossus was able to come back, and stand up, until Maxwell, with the hold still applied, hit Abu with a Neckbreaker and continued to choke him out. Even the big man couldn’t hold on, and Maxwell retained the PWP Heavyweight Championship! As Preston was celebrating, Matty Star came out and announced that PWP Officials had signed the main event for our May 28th event! It was to be Preston Maxwell defending the PWP Heavyweight Championship against Matty Star, in a 2 OUT OF 3 FALLS match! Not only that, but if Maxwell gets disqualified (as he did last time he faced Star), he will lose the championship! Maxwell was furious! As they left, Colossus was in the ring just now coming to, but from out of nowhere Shawn Nautilus ran into the ring and chokeslammed Abu straight through the mat! He then challenged him to a NO HOLDS BARRED match next month at the Anniversary Spectacular!

10.) Jaysin Strife & David Clark defeated “Babyface” Tony Cortez & Akira Tozawa when Strife pinned Cortez after a chain wrapped punch to the face. This too, was hands down one of the best matches in the history of PWP. The electricity in the National Guard Armory was unlike anything before! Most of the crowd had never seen Tozawa before, but the minute he got in the ring and started in on the hated Strife, they back him 100%! This is a MUST SEE match up, with so many amazing moments. If anyone had doubt about David Clark being a MAJOR force in PWP, it was erased here, as he took it to the Japanese superstar, Tozawa and the former PWP Champion, Tony Cortez. Strife took advantage of the steel chairs in the crowd, as he whipped Tozawa into them. As the referee was checking on Tozawa, Strife NAILED Cortez with a steel chain and the referee returned to the ring to count the pinfall, much to the fans distain. Strife & Clark then attempted to lay into Cortez some more, but he was able to come back and he and Tozawa cleared the ring. Cortez then made a challenge for May 28th, our huge 6th Anniversary Spectacular. He said its time for him and Strife to go ONE ON ONE, and he said that since he knows Clark will be in Strife’s corner, he will have none other than his best friend, former PWP Heavyweight Champion HYPE GOTTI in his! The fans cheered as Tozawa & Cortez stood tall in the ring.

It was truly a magical and memorable night for PWP, and we now head into our 6th Anniversary Spectacular! Already announced!

*** Preston Maxwell defends the PWP Heavyweight Championship against Matty Star in a 2 out of 3 falls match, where if Maxwell is disqualified, he loses the championship!

Travis Cook’s revenge?

Posted by flairwhoooooo on May 20, 2011

Travis Cook and Brandon Espinosa *Photo Credit Mike Van Hoogstraat*

When Travis Cook strikes you know that it will be well planned. A few months ago Dave Vaughn nailed the Manager of Champions Cook with a vicious spear that had rumblings within the sport that it had sent him into retirement.

Since then Cook has been missing in action, though he has made an impact in the political game with his “America’s Evil Genius” show speaking on various topics such as “Was the death of Bin Laden legal? Or Obama backs illegal immigration – How it could cost him the election in 201?

For the fans that would like to check out Travis Cook’s America’s Evil Genius click here. Remember the opinions expressed of Travis Cook are the views of Cook himself and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of Missouri Wrestling Revival.

While Cook has been making enemies in the government (Some things never change) he had been an afterthought.

That is till April 30th in Caseyville Illinois when he surprised the fans by coming out with his ace in the hole Brandon Espinosa against the Caseyville Kid and the man who took him out Dave Vaughn.

The end result was a reminder to Vaughn and the MWR fans that Cook can strike at any time and any place when Espinosa took home a big win.

We caught up with Cook who was feeling very good about the victory.

Kyle O’Reilly calls out NWA Midwest X Champ Oliver Cain.

As midwest wrestling continues to expand and flourish under the NWA banner, it only makes sense that the top talent in the professional wrestling world begin showing up.

Photobucket

NWA Midwest
Mt. Vernon, IL.

One of the hottest rising stars, Kyle O’Reilly made a statement today, after defeating “Tornado” Tony Kozina, when he challenged NWA Midwest X Champion, Oliver Cain, for his championship.

“Doesn’t matter when or where, said O’Reilly. Your a champion? Then put up or shut up, anytime, anyplace.”

Within hours of the challenge the match was set.

“Streator has been a thriving little market for NWA wrestling”, said NWA Supreme promoter, David Cavazos. “In February, we brought in NWA World Junior Champion, Craig Classic and the turnout was wonderful. What better way to return to Streator, than to have a challenger the likes of Kyle O’Reilly set for Oliver Cain?”

In addition to this encounter, the headlining match for May 28th will be for the NWA Midwest heavyweight title, as Sadist defends against Derek St.Holmes. And, a three way match will be held to determine a number one contender to the NWA Midwest X Championship. It will be Shank Barzini vs. Jason Lyte vs “Tornado” Tony Kozina. Interesting, considering what happened in the O’Reilly/Kozina bout.

Should O’Reilly dethrone Cain, and Kozina win the contenders match, we’re set for O’Reilly/Kozina II for the championship. That’s just one scenario, but it’s anyone’s ballgame! The above listed matchup’s and many more coming to Streator, IL. May 28th 2011 for Park Fest.
