MWR Trading Card #82 Frank Gotch

Posted by flairwhoooooo on June 21, 2012

We are proud to present to you a card of the one and only Frank Gotch.

You may ask yourself who?

Yet if you look in the history of wrestling there may have never been a more dominate and respected man in and out of the ring.

Born and raise on a farm near Humboldt, Iowa ,Frank Gotch would train under the great Farmer Burns. In 1904 he would defeat Tom Jenkins for the American Heavyweight title as he had his eyes set on the World Championship. Gotch was a master technician and who possessed a tremendous work ethic  during  his training under Burns would challenged the man that many believed to be unstoppable  in the “The Russian Lion” George Hackenshmidt in 1908.

After a grueling matchup between the two warriors Gotch would catch Hckenshmidt with his feared finisher the toehold to lose the first fall (In that time matches were 2 out of 3 falls) the Russian Lion conceded the final fall by refusing to come back out thus Gotch became the Champion of the World.

After reading the great biography of Frank Gotch from Mike Chapman called “Gotch “An American Hero”, I was convinced that the great wrestler from Iowa be a part of the MWR Trading Card series. To purchase this book click here.

I was honored that two of the finest in the world came together to help me produce a card worthy of the legend of Frank Gotch as Mike Chapman one of the nation’s top wrestling historians did the bio for the card and rising Midwest artist Rob Schamberger produced an original artwork that captures the greatest of the man and wrestler Frank Gotch for this card.

Thanks goes out to both of these fine gentleman that were more than happy to assist to keep the legacy of Frank Gotch alive to an all new generation of fans through this card series.

Collectors that would like to own the exclusive original painting of Rob Schambergers Frank Gotch painting send all inquiries to robschamberger at gmail dot com.

Here is the bio of Gotch from my friend Rob.

Frank Gotch Painting Acrylic and spray on 24″ x 48″ wood

Frank Gotch was the second ever wrestling world heavyweight champion, back when the stuff was a sport and not for show, a reign that is one of the ten longest in history. He was one of, if not the, biggest sports stars of the early 1900′s and elevated wrestling to heights never before dreamed of.

Because he competed in legitimate competitions, he had far fewer matches in his 14 year career than today’s professional wrestlers, only 160 official bouts. 154 of those he won. Think about that and compare it to the ‘legitimate’ MMA fighters of today. Georges St Pierre? 22 and 2 in 9 years.

Please note that this card will be sold at $3.00 each due to the high demand and short supply, so get your card or cards of Frank Gotch today.
