World League Wrestling is about to return to Springfield Missouri on June 15th in Remington’s on West Republic Road to provide exciting wrestling action for the fans and support a great cause- The Springfield Mo Make a Wish program in memory of Ashley Rhine who past away before she got to receive her wish of meeting John Cena on a cruise ship.

The Make a Wish program grants wishes by the hour and the hard work of men and women around the country like wrestling events and tomorrow’s 2012 Springfield Walk for Wishes is vital to provide those wishes.

Do we care? The reason for every match. By Shane Cooper

Hello all, I start this column by asking you one simple question. What do Shawn Micheals, Ric Flair and Mick Foley have in common. There are several things, some could argue they are 3 of the greatest of all time and they would be right for saying so. Another thing that is very important I believe, something that separates them from today’s wrestler’s on tv, is the simple fact that they know how to make you care. They can tell a story in the ring and you will find yourself emotionally invested a great deal in the match, on the edge of your seat, and make you truly care.

There are some guys from today that can do the same also, but they are not as commonplace as the wrestlers of the past generation. I believe I know the reason why this is.

Wrestling is not just a series of moves. It is a story, an art form, and when done right, it can take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The only people who truly get that are the ones who fight, work and claw their way into their spot. They start at what is considered “the bottom” and work their tails off, entertaining rooms of 50 people giving every bit of effort they can to learn, grow and consistently improve in their art. These are guys who are not handed contracts to big companies with a thimble full of knowledge. They get their start in great schools and work at great locations such as WLW and other small independent federations.

Your job as a fan who wants to see decent wrestling on tv again, is to support your local indy fed. Tune in to anything local wrestling you see on tv and support these hard working people learning the art form that wrestling should be the right way. On a side note, you will also be seeing some outstanding wrestling matches from guys who are able to make you care again and not have to sit through 45 minutes of locker room segments to be able to get to it.

The Hooligans is on fire in the Midwest once again !!

By Brian Kelley

In 2009, Devin and Mason Cutter burst onto the scene in a blaze of glory. The brothers quickly earned a reputation of being the top tag team in the Midwest with their feuds with the Submission Squad, the KC Killers and just about any team that got in their way. On the way they became the LWA Tag Team champs, the High Voltage Wrestling Tag champs

For their efforts they were voted on by the MWR Awards committee as the 2009 MWR Tag Team of the Year.

For the next two years the Cutters would be among the top teams winning matches but just never seemed to get back the momentum that they had from the start. In February 2011, they would win the PWE Tag Team Championships when Mephisto had to forfeit the titles when his partner Kurt Styles was unable to attend the event thus the Hooligans would defeat Brandon Espinosa and Ace Hawkins for the titles.

2011 was a solid year for the Hooligans as they would defend the PWE belts against the likes of TONY KOZINA & KYLE O’REILLY, their arch rivals the Submission Squad,, the Money Makin Jam Boyz, the American Bulldogs and defeating the Lumberjacks in a match between old school and new school.

Photobucket

The Hooligans and the Heroes for Hire have lived up to the hype= Bill Smith

They would be named the number one tag team during the MWR Years by the MWR staff but as the voting for the year end came to a close they would be named second runner up for 2011.

For a team that has had some of the matches in the past three years, you would think that the accolades and awards would be enough but when we spoke to Devin Cutter after it was announced that the Kentucky Buffett was named the 2011 MWR Tag Team of the Year he had these words for us.

Photobucket

The Classic double teams from the Hooligans – Photo Credit Brian Kelley

Devin Cutter went on to say “When its all said and done Tag team wrestling will become synonymous With The Hooligans.”

With their eyes set on more gold, they looked west to Kansas City to the 2011 MWR Promotion of the Year Metro Pro Wrestling. MWR had featured an article named the MWR Christmas wish list of matches with one being the Hooligans meeting the MPW Tag champions Heroes for Hire.

Little did we know at the time that our wish was that of the aggressive Hooligans, would make their debut in February of 2012 for MPW. The Heroes for Hire would be able to retain the titles due to a DQ win and then defeat the Hooligans cleanly in March thus seemingly having the Hooligans number.

Yet in May during a three way tag team match for the titles, the Hooligans would win the MPW Tag titles convincingly over the champs and arch rivals the American Bulldogs.

Photobucket

The Hooligans can hit them high or low……Photo Credit Brian Kelley

At the moment they are the only tag team in the MWR coverage area with two tag titles, while looking to regain titles at St Louis Anarchy and Zero-1. They have been requesting a match at NMW to get their hands on New Midwest Wrestling Tag Team champions Attitude Inc. for some time now with no answer. And quite honestly the promoters at NMW may be force to book the Hooligans in a battle that would be between two former MWR Tag Team of the Year’s as Attitude Inc. has already turned away any competition for their titles.

Is the first ever Dynamo Pro Wrestling tag team champions the Bumrush Brothers on their radar?

As the first half of 2012 is almost here, the Hooligans are no longer sitting by waiting for a title shot, they are making a run for them .

The Hooligans have their eyes set on the Zero-1 tag Team titles on May 26th at Streator, Il for a free show as they are set to meet the Kentucky Buffett with a chance to make the title claim to 3 of the top tag team belts in the Midwest.

Photobucket

Could the Hooligans make their way to 3XW to meet the new 3XWrestling Tag Team Champions the American Bulldogs, a team in the past that they have had exciting matches with but have also owned?

When I last spoke to the Hooligans they wanted this warning sent out to the tag teams of the Midwest “For any teams out there that feel like they are the best well Boys your lookin at em. To be the best you gotta beat the best and aint none of ya beat us.”

Tag team champions beware, the Hooligans are on the loose once again with the METRO Pro Wrestling and PWE Champion titles on the line.

In what many believe to could be the match of the year, on May 19th in East Carondelet, Illinois the much loved Puerto Ricon star Ricky Cruz will have to be at his very best if he is to dethrone the “Kingpin” Ron Powers.

Regardless of the winner, whether it is the current CWC Champion Ron Powers or the challenger Ricky Cruz promoter Herb Simmons will present the champion with a brand new title belt giving to the champion from special guest Gerry Brisco.

Almost forty years to the date St Louis wrestling promoter Sam Muchnick presented a new NWA World title belt to the winner of the Harley Race and Gerry Brisco’s brother Jack Brisco

Harley Race poses with his new NWA World heavyweight championship belt and Sam Muchnick immediately after the above ceremony. Ironically, Race wouldn’t leave the ring with the belt as Jack Brisco won the title from Race that night.

Also in the house on the night will be Gerry Son, rising star Wes brisco as he will be taking on Sean Vincent.

The first 100 SICW fans in the door can get a free MWR Trading card of announcer Jeff Vernetti.

This and so much more as SICW celebrates 53 Years of Wrestling at the Chase.

Cauliflower Alley Reunion 2012- By Darla Staggs

At The Flamingo

By Darla Staggs

All photos courtesy of Darla Staggs.

Another Cauliflower Alley Reunion has come and gone for another year, but it was a wonderful three days spent with so many friends. I have often said that some of the best friends in the world are my wrestling friends and I will always believe that.

Photobucket

This year we had to say goodbye to Karl Lauer, only as the Executive Vice President of the club, as he has officially retired. He will still remain involved with CAC and be at the reunions. It was great seeing Karl being honored for all of his hard work he has done for the CAC. This year at the Baloney Blowout, it was dedicated to Karl with a Toast and Roast……the funny thing is, no one really roasted him, as there were just too many things to toast him about. Congratulations to Karl!

I’m not going to list all of the awards from this year, but just a few that were the best to me. If you would like to see all of the award recipients and their bios, you can go to the Cauliflower Alleys website at www.caulifloweralleyclub.org.

Wendi Richter…..recipient of The Art Abrams Lifetime Achievement Award

Wendi Richter was recipient of the Art Abrams Lifetime Achievement Award. I always thought that Wendi and Joyce Grable were the best ladies tag team there ever was. I was friends with Wendi back in the late 70’s when she would be in St. Louis. It was great to see her after 25 years. She is still as beautiful as ever and she was thrilled at being honored by the CAC this year.

Photobucket

Ricky Steamboat and Brian Blair

The second one I’d like to talk about is Ricky Steamboat! He was recipient of the Lou Thesz Award. This man is probably one of the nicest guys to ever be in the wrestling business. He really takes the time to talk with all of the fans and it’s like he has known you for years. Of course, when Ricky walked into the room all of the fans went to him for autographs and to pose for photos. I overheard someone say to him, “I told you all of the marks were going to mob you!” Ricky looked at him and said, “That is why I’m here, to mingle with my fans!” I thought that was awesome!

Photobucket

Jim Ross and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin…..recipient of The Iron Mike Award

The last honoree I want to speak about is none other than “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. He was recipient of the Iron Mike Mazurki Award. Wow……there are no words that can even describe him. He is another one who is so thrilled to be with his fans. I couldn’t tell you how many hours he spent signing autographs and posing for photos with fans. He stayed until everyone was finished.

The one thing I want to stress is that during Ricky and Steve’s speeches, they stressed to all of the young guys in the business today…..”LEARN TO WORK.” It’s not always about making sure you get all of your moves in and showing what you know how to do, but learn how to work. That is what the fans and promoters and scouts want to see. So guys….remember those three words!

Photobucket

Classiest Champion of all time…….AWA Champ, Nick Bockwinkel…… Love him!

Of course, there were many other wrestlers there that I got to see and talk to. It’s always good to visit with Nick Bockwinkel and his beautiful wife, Darlene, Ted DiBiase, Terry Funk, Tom Andrews, Bob Giegel and Bill Kersten….they have all been wonderful thru the years.

Tom Andrews and Bill Kersten

I have said many times before that for me going to the CAC reunions is a great time for me to spend quality time with my wrestling family. It’s always a thrill to see the wrestlers, but most important for me is to spend time with my friends I’ve made through the years. I have met so many wonderful people in this crazy business, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. And this year, I also had the pleasure of traveling to Las Vegas with our own, Gary Jackson……

It was a fun three days!!!
