Cruz Defends Title Against Powers Feb. 23

Dave Vaughn, with manager Travis Cook in his corner, is slated to challenge for the Classic Wrestling Championship On Saturday, March 9, at the East Carondelet Community Center.  And as of today it’s Ricky Cruz who is on the spot defending the Classic crown.Except that Cruz puts the title at stake against former kingpin Ron Powers

Next Saturday, Feb. 23 on an all-star SICW lineup at the Holy Rosary Gym  in Fairmont City, Illinois.  This is the rematch Powers has been demanding since dropping the title to Cruz last May. Therefore, if Powers beats Cruz, it will be Powers risking the Classic prize against Vaughn March 9.

And where does all this leave the explosive Mr. Cook?  His other piece of talent, Ironman  Ken Kasa, has been claiming that HE is the true Classic Champion.  Cook bases this claim on the fact that not only did Kasa pin Cruz in a tag team match last December, but Kasa also won a controversial decision by disqualification over Cruz Jan. 19 in East Carondelet.

Travis maintains that a rule protecting the champion from losing the title when disqualified is antiquated and was wrongly used by Cruz in the duel with Kasa. Thus, Ironman is the true champion according to Cook and is willing to risk the honor every time he steps into the ring.

Is SICW promoter Herb Simmons trying to put Cook, Vaughn and Kasa under pressure by giving Vaughn the title match March 9?  But what if Powers knocks off Cruz Feb. 23?  Adding to the mayhem is that, titleholder or not, Simmons is likely to sign Powers for a battle against Bull Schmitt April 13 in East Carondelet.  Those two warriors want to destroy each other after a pull-apart donnybrook Feb. 9.

Even more, the well-known Flash Flanagan has invaded SICW and made clear his goal is to be number one by winning the Classic Championship.  Flash also is hot after Cruz whether Ricky is the champion or not based on some battles those two had in Puerto Rico.

Plus several other standouts are lurking in the background and may deserve title matches – combatants like Chas Wesson, Alexander Rudolph, Gary Jackson, The Big Texan, Heath Hatton, Kevin X and particularly Chris Hargas who is recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in an auto accident.  And even Jake Dirden, being sought by Japanese promoters for a tour, is getting better in each outing.

If this is so-called “old school” booking, it seems to be working to the fans advantage because every SICW match means something for the winner – and the loser!
