HVW delivered impressive action to its fans at the one year anniversary show, “Encore” in Granite City, IL at the River’s Edge Complex. Ninety eight fans gathered to witness the crowning of new champion, an unexpected turn and the explosion that occurred between Mark Bland and Donovan Ruddick.

HVW Oct 10 008

High Voltage Staff, wrestlers and fans honor BJ Race with a ten bell salute.

Before the festivities got underway, HVW honored Harley Race’s late wife, BJ, with a 10-bell salute prior to the shows.

As the night got underway, Eric Allen came out to boast about his undefeated streak in HVW and demanded a title shot. “TNT” Keny G made the match, and Allen faced Kahagas right then and there for The Japanese Nightmare’s HVW Heavyweight Championship. Kahagas made quick work of Allen, dominating him at every turn.

Despite Allen’s persistence, Kahagas swiftly ended Allen’s undefeated steak and walked away with belt intact. Moments after the conclusion of the match, Mark Sterling emerged and demanded a shot at the champion as well.

Matt Cage and Mississippi Madman went at it next. Madman started off the bout by intimidating the referee, and doing his best to make Cage feel uneasy. Cage got in little offense to begin, as Madman flew at him with a flurry of punches, chops and elbow drops. However, Cage capitalized on a key moment, allowing himself to get the upper hand. Magic Man, who had accompanied Cage to ringside, interjected himself in the match as well.

But the domination did not last very long. Madman regained his composure and put an end to Cage’s pompous antics.

The lovely Santana G comes out for her very first match against Mia Martinez (Photo credit Michael R Van Hoogstraat)

Santana G competed in her first singles match against Mia Martinez. Santana had the fans behind her the whole way through, which seemed to will her on and help her gain the early advantage. After being tossed out of the ring, Martinez had had enough and her demeanor changed to relentless fury. On more than one occasion, Martinez nearly had the match won, but Santana’s determination made her pull through.

She slowly regained momentum and had victory within sight. After hitting a moonsault on the prone Martinez, she picked up her first singles victory.

Wyatt’s brute force overpowered the energetic “Diamond.” Nonetheless, Cutter would not go down easily; he scratched and clawed his way toward victory, but each time he gained the slightest advantage, Wyatt would shut him down. The Rebel put an end to Cutter, swiftly and decisively.

The following contest was to crown the first-ever HVW Tag Team Champions.

The Hooligans have quickly moved up the ladder in the top tag teams in the Midwest. (Photo credit Michael R Van Hoogstraat)

The Hooligans (Devin and Mason Cutter) and The Submission Squad (Evan Gelistico and Pierre Abernathy) put everything on the line in a continuation of their battles that have taken place in multiple promotions across the Midwest. They started the match off with a number of double-teams, and Abernathy ended up with the early advantage. The Hooligans soon turned the tide, however, and began to target Abernathy’s knee.

HVW Oct 10 076

Gelistico tagged in shortly thereafter and cleared the ring. But the Hooligans caught Gelistico off guard and cut the ring in half. Gelistico’s will propelled him forward, and he got the tag on Abernathy, who did his best to bring the advantage to the Squad. The Hooligans stopped him short and attacked his knee yet again, closing in on victory.

Despite the resolve of the Squad, the Hooligans got the pin and emerged as the HVW Tag Team champions.

After intermission, Cabal and Max Archer duked it out. Cabal’s mean streak continued, as he downright dominated Archer, who got in little to no offense. Although Archer put up a valiant fight, and had the crowd on his side, he could not get the upper hand. The final moments came as Cabal delivered a back breaker that left Archer writhing in pain and prone for defeat.

A Livewire Gauntlet/Battle Royal took place next, where all the but the remaining two competitors had to be eliminated by being thrown over the top rope. The final two would then battle until a pinfall or submission occurred. Gary Jay, Rebelucha, Brandon Aarons, Mike Sydal, Brandon Espinosa, Alexandre Rudolph and Davey Vega participated in the gauntlet. Rudolph looked like he would dominate, but the other competitors teamed up and eliminated him early on.

Aarons, Espinosa and Sydal were the final three competitors, and once Sydal tossed Espinosa to the outside, Aarons and Sydal battled it out for the Livewire Championship.

Sydal quickly went to his high-flying tactics in hopes of capturing the title without delay. But, Aarons’ fast-paced agility put Sydal’s hopes on hold for a little while longer.

The two athletes tried to hit as many high impact moves as fast as they could, and Sydal was on a role in that regard. He emerged as the Livewire Champion, ending Aarons’s championship dreams.

Absolute Wrestling Radio Host Mark Bland and The Future Donovan Ruddick have been in what many think was the 2009 feud of the year. (Photo credit Michael R Van Hoogstraat)

Absolute Wrestling Radio Host Mark Bland’s finally had the opportunity to prove to all the naysayers that he would knock out “Future” Donovan Ruddick in their much-anticipated match.

Bland showed his cockiness before even stepping into the ring, as he passed signed Mark Bland 8x10s to members of the audience. But once the bell rang, Bland proved that he was not just talk; his training showed, as he had Ruddick reeling on more than one occasion. Still, each blow from Bland only angered the 6’9” Monster, and Ruddick turned the tables.

When Bland sensed his moment of glory had neared its end, he went to desperate measures and hit Ruddick with a chair. In normal circumstances, this would constitute a disqualification, but “TNT” Keny G forced the match to continue.

As Ruddick took care of Bland inside the ring, Keny G made sure that Matt Kreuger would not interfere—as did Magic Man. Ruddick then soundly defeated Bland.

Kahagas returned for his second match of the night to defend the HVW Heavyweight Championship against Central States Champion Mark Sterling. Keny G made the bout a title for title match, where whomever gets the victory wins both belts. Sterling’s fierce determinism made him a prime candidate for a title shot, and Kahagas did not take that lightly. These two stellar athletes wrestled an incredible match, leaving fans begging for more.

Sterling capitalized on Kahagas’s tendency to combat opponents with stiff kicks and other unorthodox moves by keeping him grounded as much as possible. Kahagas’s resolve forced him to continue, and the two took the fight out of the ring, where Sterling gained the upper hand. The moment Kahagas started to gain an inkling of momentum—as if on cue—Wyatt ran from the back, interfering in the match up, rewarding Kahagas with a disqualification victory.

Obviously, the reward was not very fruitful, as Wyatt and Sterling viciously attacked Kahagas. Then, Sydal came out and turned his back on the fans only hours after winning the Livewire title. The three of them—The Kansas City Killers—utterly dominated Kahagas until the Hooligans and Neil Diamond Cutter came to the Japanese Nightmare’s aid.

The Love of wrestling- My side of the MWR story Part 1

Posted by flairwhoooooo on November 8, 2009

By Brian “Flair” Kelley

Wrestling has always been my first love. From watching ALL –STAR Wrestling out of Kansas City and reading the monthly Pro Wrestling Illustrated on my hour bus drive to school and back home everyday, I can not remember a day when I did not dream of being a part of the sport that I love.

Getting out of school I had the dream but no drive or motivation. Days went by then years without even getting involved in the sport. I grew disinterested in wrestling when Vince bought out WCW, and just watch occasionally on TV , Every once in a while I I went to one of my idols shows, Harley Race’s WLW to check out a legend that he brought in that I grew up with to get a picture with. In the meantime I spent time with my son Josh, traveling to Denver to watch Denver Bronco football, going to comedy clubs and hanging out with friends that my dream of being a part of wrestling took a backseat.

Out of boredom one day I was in on the net and came across a promotion called CSW in Lawrence Kansas that caught my interest for a show on April 29, 2006 called X Marks the Spot 2. Believe it or not, this organization was bring in TNA Superstar AJ Styles which was cool I guess, I had seen him a few times before on TV and was impressed but it was what they offered before the show. The coolest ideal I ever heard of, for a small fee you were able to buy a VIP package to the show. You got first row seats to the show and a DVD of it when they came out in production which was sweet but the kicker for me was a fans Q and A for 30 minutes with a the special guest AJ Styles.

csw x marks the spot 2

If you know me at all you know that I love talking about wrestling, what you may not know is I love shoot interviews (A Q and A where wrestlers supposedly tell stories that are true.) or reading wrestling autobiographies. This was a golden opportunity to get up close and personal. I purchased tickets for my beautiful new girlfriend Dubray and me for the show In a small room with about 15-25 other people who were about half my age asked the young talented wrestler question about how he got his start, what video games he played and what his thoughts on TNA was. Sometimes awkward but never boring the Q and A’s was surly something special.

After talking to Styles who was very respectful and informational, we made our way to our seats. Never before or since have I been at a wrestling promotion that had the feel of the TV show Cheers (For you younger fans that was a show where everyone went to the bar, and it everyone cared for each other like family. From the time we sat down the fans welcomed us and throughout the night informed us who was who and why they were fighting. Many of the fans brought the feel of a football game and when ____ chanted rang the bell (which he did at the start of every CSW show) the fans were pumped. Throughout the night they chanted, had signs and added to the experience of the show without taking away from the wrestler’s hard work.

The action was good and the night was exciting in the ring as well. My girlfriend enjoyed the shenanigans of the tag team of Derek Stone and Mason Hunter going against the equally entertaining Brett Young and Hype Gotti. A match between Michael Strider and Dingo had stiff chops and eye popping moves to go along with pure wrestling. The fans really gave manager Steve Girthy a hard time and his reactions were priceless. Girthy was highly entertaining and one of the few managers who I could say was in the league with MMWA-SICW’s Travis Cook.

I have to admit that the NWA will always have a place in my heart. From the early days of being a wrestling fan I always considered them to BE Pro Wrestling. Though, I am full aware that it may never come back to full power I am always happy to see them involved where I am at. On this evening the NWA Midwest Tag team defended their titles against the team of Young and Gotti who had won the opportunity early in the night to go for the belts. Little did I know that one of the guys that evening would be one of the top stars in the industry Tyler Black and his talented partner Marek Brave. The NWA Kansas Champion and the NWA Midwest X Champ Jaysin Strife went toe to toe in a match that prove to me that wrestling was alive and well in Kansas.

In the main event AJ Styles took on Darrien Sanders. The fans were on their feet and cheered Sanders and Styles both looking for a good match. There was magic in the air. On that night these two put on a solid match. Throughout the match Sanders looked to hit Styles with one of his many brutal kicks to wear down Styles. Styles would get the victory by hitting Sanders with the Spinal tap. The real winners were the fans as we gave a standing ovation to both me but it truly was for the locker room for a great night of wrestling.

Because of the time we went to CSW Dubray and I met fans who live hours away from me who will be friends of mine for life. Kenneth Scott, Peter Hahn, RETRO Rick (even though he is a chiefs fan), Rhino, Renn , Logan and Ray Milan are just a few who I still see at a show from time to time. There are many others liked the talented artist Rio and her mother who we have lost contact with but look forward to see how they are doing.

I know that she will most likely kill me but during that time at CSW, a wonderful woman who worked the shows, Crystal always welcomed us to the show and asked how we were. When we left she always wished us well and I am glad to say that I consider her one of our good friends.

Time would past and CSW would close there doors but before that sad day would come we would enjoy some great Q and A’S with Superstars like Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels and when they did not have a spherical guest the local stars like CSW Star Brett Young. To be honest the very best Q and A would be with local wrestler Hype Gotti who was OVAH as my friend Patrick B would say. Gotti is one of the most charismatic wrestlers that I have ever seen on the Indy scene. If only we had video taped Hype Gotti’s Q and A we could of made a fortune.

That time with CSW was truly what you call “good times”

During the last days I would meet Josh C Ray who was around the same age as I was who had just came out of the military. We had similar beliefs in wrestling and truly loved the sport. It wasn’t long that he was one of my closest and best friends that I would have. Little did I know that our friendship would mature into something special in my life outside of the two of us hanging out and talking on the phone for hours.

LWA Oct. 24 arena report

Posted by reimaginejournalism on November 6, 2009

By Kari Williams

At the Knights of Columbus Hall in House Springs, MO, LWA brought Six Years of Cheers and Beers to 85 fans who witnessed a historic night.

LWA President Luke Roberts kicked off the night by stripping both K.C. Karrington and “Spoiled” Steven Kennedy of the LWA Championship and Medallion of Brutality, respectively. He then awarded Gary the Nightowl the LWA Championship and Evan Gelistico the Medallion of Brutality, much to the chagrin of the
audience.

LWA Commissioner Tim Alley emerged to shake things up a bit and attempt to please the fans. He declared that all three medallions would be on the line in the opening match.

“Spitfire” Davey Vega, Gorgeous Jordan and Evan Gelistico battled for title contention. The match was a Medallion unifying match, and the winner would go on to face Gary in the main event for the belt. Initially, Jordan and Gelistico reunited to take Vega out of the equation, but that did not last long. Alliances failed and they all fought in and out of the ring, bringing chairs into the mix and demolishing each other’s bodies. Vega ultimately prevailed, pinning Gelistico.

Mike Sydal, accompanied by “Thee” Brandon Espinosa, took on Rebelucha. The two have crossed paths in the past, and that became apparent as they effectively countered each other’s moves. Their styles clashed perfectly, causing Sydal to become frustrated about half way through the match when he could not put Rebelucha away. Although Sydal gained the advantage, Rebelucha refused to give in; he worked his way toward success, and defeated Sydal with an Oklahoma roll.

Adam Raw came to the ring next and brought out Pierre Abernathy to, as he said, “Bury the hatchet or punch him in the face.” Abernathy said he does not like Raw, but that he will extend his hand. As Abernathy and Raw showed each other respect, “The Rebel” Jeremy Wyatt claimed that he is the only man in the LWA who matters and that he is the best LWA champion in history.

Sydal returned to ringside to accompany Espinosa in his match against Super Electro. Espinosa attempted to gain control early on, but Electro’s unnatural offense curtailed Espinosa’s plan. The eccentricities the fans love Electro for helped him dominate the beginning of the match. Espinosa soon had enough, and in a matter of moments, he took over. Espinosa soundly defeated the loveable Electro, and after the match both Sydal and Espinosa were offered modeling contracts from Dusk Rose.

After intermission, Wyatt and Abernathy went at it. They took the fight to the outside and traded chops against the ring post. Both men had their moments of supremacy, but Wyatt remained one step ahead of Abernathy. Wyatt took a page out of Abernathy’s playbook and focused his attack on Abernathy’s leg/knee area. Using his typical tactics, Wyatt pulled on the ropes for added leverage while trapping Abernathy in submission holds, doing further damage to knee. Abernathy did his best to combat the pain, but to no avail. Wyatt forced Abernathy to tap out to the single-leg Boston crab.

“Future” Donovan Ruddick got his hands on Raw in the following contest. Despite his raw power, the LWA original fought an uphill battle against Ruddick. The two men collided, as they attempted to knock each other off of their feet. Ruddick had a slight advantage most of the bout, but Raw was not too far behind. He gained some steam and looked poised for victory—that is, until Abernathy grabbed a chair Ruddick had attempted to use earlier in the match and slammed it into Raw’s skull. Ruddick capitalized and got the win.

Nick Tyson returned to LWA to introduce Dingo, who gave his farewell speech to end a 10-year career that took him from Gateway Championship Wrestling to LWA to High Voltage Wrestling to Ring of Honor, and countless other places.

In the main event, Vega and Gary locked up for Gary’s newly won LWA Title. The battle quickly spilled to the outside, where Gary tried to make quick work of Spitfire. Vega’s skill brought him close to victory on more than one occasion, and the fans were behind him all the way. Gary should not be taken lightly, however. He can pack a punch and deliver top rope maneuvers with the best of them. Unfortunately, that was not how Gary retained the belt. When Vega had come within seconds of winning, Gelistico came out and nailed Vega with a superkick behind the ref’s back. Gary then hit Vega with the flatliner to retain the LWA championship.

To witness the aftermath of the sixth anniversary show, LWA will be in O’ Fallon, IL this Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Knights of Columbus Hall. For more information, go to http://www.lwawrestling.com.
