-Karim Brigante(w/ Women’s Champion Miss Monica Passeri) d. “The” Ace Hawkins to win the MWR Missouri Title; Monica stopped Ace from walking out on the match, leading to Karim winning with the pop-up forearm smash (12:53).
–”The Heartthrob” Jaden Roller(w/ “Can-Do” Curtis Dearling) d. “The Wrestler For The People” Rex Fults. “The Mouth Of The South” Jimmy Hart stopped Curtis from using his briefcase as a weapon, but the outside distraction allowed Roller to blindside Rex with his own nightstick behind the referee’s back for the cheap win (11:10).
–Jayden Dominic Rose d. Jack Gamble in a strap match to retain the Jr. Heavyweight Title. Gamble nearly won, but Rose spit mist in Gamble’s eyes before tagging the four turnbuckles for the win (16:38).
–Miss Monica Passeri d. Savanna Stone with a tilt-a-whirl takedown into a Fujiwara armbar to retain the Women’s Title (8:56); Stacey O’Brien was the special guest referee. After the match, Stacey decked Monica and nearly left with the belt before Monica got it back and chased her out of the ring.
-”The Hybrid Ace” Jon Webb d. “The Legacy” Leland Race(w/ “Can-Do” Curtis Dearling) in a no-DQ match to win the Heavyweight Title; Race missed a swing with a chair and it rebounded off the top rope into his face. Webb capitalized with the Asai DDT for the title-winning pinfall (20:48).
–”Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner & Kyle Roberts d. “Superstar” Steve Fender & Brandon Espinosa to win the Tag Team Titles. Fender & Espy attacked Steiner with chairs and destroyed his leg before the bell, leaving Roberts to fight alone for most of the match. As Roberts got an opening, Steiner limped to ringside and threw in a chair, which Roberts used to take out Espy with a Van Daminator behind the referee’s back! That allowed Roberts to pin Espy to win the belts for his unlikely tag team (16:17)!

New WLW Tag Team Champions – Steve Fender and Brandon Espinosa

This past weekend at the Harley Race Wrestling Arena, Superstar Steve Fender and Brandon Espinosa defeated Kyle Roberts and Warwick Stephans to win the vacated WLW Tag-Team Championships. The new tag team Champions Fender and Espinosa were able to win the belts despite miscommunication between the two at that saw them come to near blows during several key moments of the contact .
If these two can get on the same page, they could very well hold onto these belts for a long time as both of them are two of the top wrestlers during the MWR years. Fender was one half of the first ever WLW Tag Team Champions back in 2001 with Matt Murphy. Since then he has held onto the belt with several partners throughout the years including Ace Steel, Mason Hunter, Mark Sterling, Bao Nguyen and Dangerous Derek just to name a few. Espinosa is no stranger to tag team success with partners Brandon Aarrons, Mike Sydal and Ace Hawkins.

Elite Aggression Shakes Up The WLW Tag Team Division by Patrick Brandmeyer

Fans attending the World League Wrestling event on June 26th expected to see new Tag Team Champions being crowned…but an unexpected team walked out with the gold that night.
The night started with the roster assembled at ringside for a ten-bell salute. Several legends of the wrestling business had recently passed away and those in attendance paid tribute to “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, Tommy Rogers, “Nature Boy” Buddy Landell, and Cora Combs.
The opening match saw Jon Webb made his triumphant return from Japan as he faced Michael Magnuson of the Black Hand Warriors. Webb had learned a lot in his stint with the NOAH promotion as he went toe-to-toe with the bigger and stronger Magnuson.

Magnuson nearly powered his way to victory, but Webb surprised him with a rana into a pinning combination for the win.
“Dangerous” Derek McQuinn had been on a roll since his return to action, but the fans were on the side of his opponent John E. Rock. Rock had momentum on his side due to the support of the audience at the Harley Race Wrestling Arena, but the former WLW Heavyweight Champion had the edge in experience as well as underhanded tactics. When Rock climbed to the top turnbuckle, Dangerous Derek shoved the referee into the ropes to knock his opponent off balance.
Rock tumbled to the mat and Derek took advantage of the situation, winning with his trademark spear.
“The Legacy” Leland Race had a tough test as he defended his WLW Championship against “The Ego” Dustin Bozworth.
The challenger had recently appeared on “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Ranch show and was hoping to ride that fame to greater in-ring success. However, Race had held the title since November and wasn’t planning on his reign being ended so soon.

Bozworth seemingly had control of the match when Superstar Steve Fender and Dangerous Derek attacked the champion, causing a disqualification win for the titleholder. Bozworth didn’t participate in the two-on-one beatdown as the pair had just ruined his chance at winning the belt…when Fender teased a cash-in of his Harley Race Invitational Tournament trophy for an impromptu title match with Leland, Bozworth’s presence made him reconsider and Fender left the ring with McQuinn.
Fan Favorite Stacey O’Brien
A long-standing rivalry continued as Stacey O’Brien defended the WLW Women’s Championship against “Miss Natural” Heather Patera.
Miss Natural won the title for the first time in 2002 and has held it a record-setting seven times in total. However, Stacey’s first title win came at Miss Natural’s expense in 2008 and the two have been battling since that time. On the heels of their best-of-five-match series over the belt, Stacey was a six-time champion and was hoping to close the book on the long rivalry However, the bout ended in controversy as a pinning combination seemed to leave both women’s shoulders on the canvas. Miss Natural thought she had won, but Stacey got a shoulder off the mat and was declared the winner.
Miss Natural taunts the crowd and lets them know that at the Night of Champions she is coming for her WLW Ladies Championship
Miss Natural angrily grabbed the title belt before it could be presented to the champion…she wanted the feud to end as well and she challenged Stacey to a best-of-three-falls match at the Night Of Champions event in August. Stacey accepted the offer and the two shook hands, but Miss Natural kicked her in the midsection and laid her out with the Natural Disaster!
When Jon Webb and Jack Gamble left for their tour of NOAH, the WLW Tag Team Titles were declared vacant and a four-team tournament was held to determine the next champions. The Black Hand Warriors duo of Dave DeLorean and Jayden Fenix had defeated John E. Rock and Matt Creed to advance; on the other side of the bracket, the upstart team of Kickin’ Kyle Roberts and Justin D’Air scored a huge upset over Superstar Steve and Dangerous Derek. However, Roberts suffered a broken collarbone in the matchup and Brandon Espinosa substituted for him in the tournament finale.
Despite their limited experience as a unit, Espinosa and D’Air worked well together; however, DeLorean and Fenix had the advantage in tag team continuity. They gained the advantage when DeLorean dropped Espinosa onto the edge of the ring with a modified Death Valley Driver, but Espy finally managed to make the tag to D’Air. D’Air lived up to his name as he flew around the ring, culminating in a huge somersault plancha onto DeLorean and a Van Terminator-style dropkick with DeLorean seated in the adjacent corner. Espy powerslammed DeLorean and D’Air followed up with his 450 Splash, but Fenix broke up the pinfall attempt in time.
DeLorean and Fenix rallied and were able to take Espinosa out of the match long enough to finish off D’Air with their Tombstone/flying double-stomp combination…DeLorean pinned D’Air after that and the Black Hand Warriors were once again Tag Team Champions!
The night wasn’t quite over…as DeLorean and Fenix celebrated their win, Superstar Steve and Dangerous Derek attacked them from behind! The teams battled it out, but Steve and Derek had the advantage over the worn-down champions…and Steve revealed that he could cash in his trophy for ANY title shot, electing to use it for an impromptu challenge for the tag belts!

The former Gold Exchange members isolated the less-experienced Fenix and Derek took him down with a spear…the referee barely had time to call for an official opening bell before he was counting Derek’s pinfall! Just like that, we saw new WLW Tag Team Champions crowned for the second time in the span of a few minutes!
The night provided more questions than answers…will the Black Hand Warriors be the unlikely fan favorites against the newly-named “Elite Aggression” duo?
WLW Tag Team Champions Superstar Steve and Dangerous Derek
Will they be on the same side as their old rivals Gamble and Webb, who just recently got back from Japan and will surely be wanting their belts back? Where does Michael Magnuson stand after being noticably absent while his partners were being screwed out of the championships? We don’t know the answers to those questions yet, but the fans certainly saw a memorable night of action in Troy!

Follow Hwy 47 until you pass Clonts Field (Football) on your left. After the field you will turn right onto Fairgrounds Road. The grounds are approximately 1/4 mile on the right.
From west:Take Hwy 70 East to the Hwy 47 Exit in Warrenton. Take Hwy 47 North to Hawk Point. At the four way stop in Hawk Point turn right continuing on Hwy 47. Turn left on Hwy H, just west of Troy. Former World League Wrestling Champion Steve Anthony Challenges Jushin “Thunder” Liger for the NWA Jr Heavyweight Championship at the Cauliflower Alley Club

In less than a month former WLW Heavyweight Champion Steve Anthony will take on a true legend when he goes one on one against Jushin “Thunder” Liger at the 50th Anniversary of the Cauliflower Alley Club for the NWA Jr. Heavyweight Championship. During Anthony’s time in the Midwest, he trained under the 8-time NWA Worlds Champion Harley Race while thrilling fans with his aerial skills and mat skills that has set him up to be a true threat in Vegas.
MWR was thrilled to have him featured on our first and only DVD, The Best of the Midwest against “Superstar” Steve Fender in a excellent match.
We will be thrilled to be there live to cheer him on as he hopes to make history by winning the title in front of the SOLD OUT CAC crowd.

12 Wrestlers that will make an impact in Midwest during 2012!

Sure you know about the past MWR Wrestlers of the Years and champions at each promotions but what young stars should you be on the lookout for this coming year. Here we give you 12 for 2012 for you to be on the lookout for. Some are close to be among the choices for Wrestlers of the year real soon while others are knocking at the door to be a force in the future.
As far as the wrestlers who didn’t make the list. Use this article as motivation to outshine all twelve of these fine young talents in 2012.
Let the fun begin in the squared circles around the Midwest.
1) Serenity

Serenity is known for wowing the crowd with her dazzling colors and beautiful smile. Underneath the surface, however, lies the heart and desire of a true professional wrestler. Fear is only a four letter word to this young lady as she isn’t afraid to mix it up with anyone, male or female, inside the squared circle. Anyone who has stood across from her in the ring will soon tell you that Serenity means business and if you don’t believe them, try it. You’ll find out for yourself.
Outlook: How much impact that she will have in 2012 in the MWR coverage area depends on how often she wrestles in the 15 promotions that we cover as promoters in up north have taken notice. Her looks has caught the eyes of promoters and her work rate and desire to be the best has shown moments of greatness at times. She finished the year wrestling at SICW against MsChif in the St Louis area for the first time in years.
Here is the kicker, this talented young wrestler is only twenty years of age and wrestled MsChif at the young age of 18. That’s right, she is only twenty, and has charisma to spare. She will only be getting better and looks to be one of the top stars in wrestling for many years to come. Look for her to make her way in SHIMMER sooner than later.
2) Christian Rose

Rose had a very good 2011 but everyone at MWR feels as if the best is yet to come. A current AAPW Tag Team Champion with Matt Cage have been active at IWAU, NMW , SLA and AAPW. Quality promo skills keeps the fans attention while his in ring action keeps him in every match. Rose could easily be a MWR Wrestler of the year down the road as he has been gaining respect from his peers and a threat to his opponents.
3) Bull Bronson
Bronson may be raw, let me say that again Bull is very raw but very few men in the Midwest is as big as the HUGE AAPW star. He won a big 5-man scramble match at AAPW’S Main event and was very impressive as he picked up the win on AAPW regular Playboy Paul Rose.
A manager in this stage of his career could do wonders for him in 2012. Some training from Harley Race’s Wrestling Academy could prepare him on how to deal with other powerhouses as Brian Breaker and Jason Jones who both know how to use their strength and leverage to work to blow up a man the size of Bronson.
4) LaMarcus Clinton
Loved by the fans, LMC will have to limit these mistakes that he made in Hillsdale,MO for the fans if he hopes to make it to the next level...Still Brandon Espinosa is one of the masterminds of fooling even the best and here he played possum, then moved at the last moment. He is quite possibly the most popular wrestler at MMWA-SICW other than Gary Jackson. Clinton is high flying and exciting but this is also high risk thus making his win loss record inconsistent. Needs to put on some weight to be a true threat to a main title at this time in his career. Maybe a tag team partner for now would give him time to gain the mass that he needs to be a title contender. Still 2012 looks to be a year with many chances to succeed for Clinton. That is if he can overcome a sophomore slump
5) American Bulldogs

Maddog McDowell has won tag team titles with multiple partners in many promotions but you can tell that he has a special place in his heart for rookie Jonathan West. McDowell has true power that has allowed him to contend for singles titles and grudge matches with some of the best in the sport. West has been like a sponge, taking in all the info and advice that McDowell will give him. Their feud with Chad Mylans MMA was a highlight for fans at 3XW for almost all of 2011.
Quality matches on the road at PWE against the PWE Champions the Hooligans showcased West at his very best. Still the inexperience of the Bulldogs would cost them during the match as the Hooligans proved once again to the Midwest that they are arguably still the standard for tag teams in the Midwest.
6) Jaysin Strife

How does one of the very best in the Midwest get on this list?
Honestly, he just hasn’t been able to get going at full speed for some time. He is one of the best wrestlers today that many fans have never heard of. A tour overseas in 2011 limited his coverage as well as working towards making Magnum Pro Wrestling a force in Iowa. Strife has bookings for 3XW and PWE and if the fans are lucky at Metro Pro Wrestling he will become a regular there as well. In fact I am still waiting for my Jaysin Strife vs “Superstar” Steve Fender match. Any promotion that wants a main event player added to their roster should contact Strife soon.
7) ACH

Many fans feel as if the “The Last Dragon” is a superstar sooner than later. Innovated in his moves fans at St Louis Anarchy have been raving about the young star all last year. In December at St Louis Anarchy, he would rain on the parade of Jeremy Wyatt as he returned to LWA/Anarchy in a losing effort in what many fans stated was a great great match. Fans at Metro Pro Wrestling be sure to get tickets for the Feb 4th show as Wyatt and ACH will meet once again.. ACH will also be heading to PWE in Mt Pulaski as he will be taking on Jordan McEntyre during a qualifying match to enter the 2011 PWE Epic 8 tournament that was won in 2010 by the 2011 MWR Wrestler of the Year Brandon Espinosa.
Then on February in Granite City he will return to SLA to take on TJ Perkins. Like Rose, ACH is poised to become a MWR Wrestler of the Year if the cards deal them the proper way in the future.
8) Tyler Priegel

Many fans smirk at his nickname “the Dodgeball Superstar“, but Tyler Priegel is no one to take lightly. What makes Priegel so dangerous is how methodical he is in the ring. No wasted movement and always going forward. He is a true threat right now to NMW Champion Ryan Phoenix’s title. Like Serenity though, will Priegel make his way to the MWR coverage area enough to make the impact for us to see? We certantly hope so.
9) Mat Fitchett

Nicknamed “Flippy Sh%T”, Fitchett has been trained by local legend Dingo and former NWA Missouri Champ Davey Vega. Fitchett has been earning rave reviews in Texas with Texas Anarchy and ST Louis Anarchy backing down from no one. Was honored a Chikara spot for the Young Lions cup, in 2011 and was very impressive. Fitchett is another wrestler that MWR Promoters should be on the phone to try to get a spot for him on their card. Exciting and electrifying, he always brings a 100 % and looks to be a star for years to come
10) Heath Hatton

Heath Hatton had a strong 2012, he was one half of the AAPW tag Team Champions with Curly. He made appearances for Harley Race’s WLW and TNA’S developmental league OVW in Kentucky. Hatton would have to go at it alone when Curly was fired from AAPW thus leaving him alone to defend the titles against Matt Cage and Christian Rose, and though Hatton fought with true heart the mountain was too tall to overcome as arch rival “The Golden Boy” Greg Anthony assisted Cage and Rose to help them became the AAPW Tag Team Champs.
He started 2012 off just right by defeating Anthony convincingly at AAPW’S Main event. Would love to take on AAPW Champ Edmund McGuire but with the two being among the top two fan favorites right now he may have to wait a bit. That may be a blessing because right now he may not be ready for the champ but with further training and matches around the Midwest by the end of 2012, he may be the man at AAPW.
11) Lucy Mendez
Midwest dream girl can wrestle as good as she can model.
She is The Current WLW Ladies Champion, and yes the ratings soar when she enters the ring for Metro Pro Wrestling whether it is as a valet for Domino Rivera or in action herself. In 2011 she feuded with the 2011 MWR Female Wrestler of the Year Stacey O’Brien who just barely won the award over “The Latino Princess”
So why is she on this list?
It’s simple really.
Mendez just started training late 2008 and has already won two WLW Ladies Championships. With looks that kill and the desire to be the best she has been on the search for the top competition in the Midwest. Mendez has already been in the ring with the likes of O’Brien, Miss Natural, Amy Hennig and MsChif. We would love nothing more than SHIMMER to give her an opportunity to showcase her skills taught to her by the greatest of all greats Harley Race. She deserves a chance to earn her respect among here peers by meeting the very best women wrestlers in the world today at Shimmer. Women such as the CHEERLEADER MELISSA, SARA DEL REY and Rachel Summerlyn could bring her to the next level in 2012.
12) Joey O’Riley

It is easy to add O’Riley to the list many will tell us after he had defeated IWAU Champion Matt Cage in a ladder match this past Saturday in Olney Illinois. True, but it is one thing to win a title it’s another thing to hold onto the belt and with Cage who is still in the mix for another shot, it may be harder to retain that what it was to capture the title.
His youth and focused will be tested early on as he is now the hunted. With that said this is a blessing for young O’Riley so that it can prepare himself on what it is to be a Champion. The pressure of winning a belt is now over.
O’Riley is another wrestler who is still raw in his skills and in 2011 he made appearances for New Midwest Wrestling in tag action. While he is the king of his home base at IWAU it will be interesting to see how he deals with adversity. His next opponent is scheduled to be Cash Bordin, a guy who will do whatever it takes to get the belt but if he is to be among the best O’Riely is going to have to make quick work of another fellow young star in Bordin.

WLW/WWE/Pro Wrestling Noah presented a magical week for wrestlers and fans in the Midwest in October.

For the past 10 plus years the must attend wrestling weekend in the Midwest has been held in Eldon Missouri at Harley Race’s World League Wrestling Academy. Race is considered by many to be the very best wrestler in the history of the sport. During his time as the 8-time NWA World Champion he would travel across the globe defending the title including the very best in Japan. When his career was done those trips and relationships would help build a relationship with Pro Wrestling Noah, one of the top wrestling companies not only in Japan but around the world.

WLW and NOAH would team up to trade talent to allow the best to compete against each other in matches that would prepare one Trevor Murdock to not only be ready to make a run in WWE but flourish with tag team partner Lance Cade to become a 3-time WWE Tag Team Champions.
The WLW school would introduce fans to stars like Matt “the Missile” Murphy, Griz, Derek Stone, Trevor Murdock, Wade Chism, the Drill Instructor, Warcloud and Johnny Jett as they mixed it up with many of the top names in the sport like Meng, Butch Reed, Bobby Eaton, The Harris Brothers, Rick Stiener and Japan’s Takeshi Morishima, Takao Ōmori and Go Shiozaki as they toured towns for fundraisers around the Midwest.
While the school runs year round to season the young talent, the annual WLW/NOAH camp works with WWE as past trainers have been John Laurinaitis, Ricky Steamboat, Tom Pritchard, Takashi Suguira, Go Shiozaki, Takeshi Morishima, KENTA, Naomichi Marufuji, Kenta Kobashi, Ty Bailey, and many more.
This year’s camp featured Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, William Regal, Kevin Von Erich, and Harley Race along with representatives from Pro-Wrestling NOAH Ken Hirayama and Ryu Nakata as students around the country came to hone their wrestling skills in the ring.
I was honored to be a guest to sit in during the weeks camp as the 40 plus students took part in the camp. During the days that I was there I was impressed with the patience and dedication that each of the trainers gave each of the students.

Due to the size of the groups there were two locations for the students, one for the beginners and one for the more seasoned wrestlers. While each group would be able to get great hints on how to work a match, logic, moves and where to be in the ring with hands on from the trainers.
As the camp went on during the week, the Pro Wrestling Noah and WWE representatives wanted to see the wrestlers come up with a match, then perform it in the ring. After the match was done advise was given to each of the wrestlers on what they did right, what they could have done different and how to improve it for the fans.

During the Saturday wrestling show I sat down with a few of the students to get their take on the weeklong camp and what they got out of it. One Jonas Albert Robinson from Oregon had already been to Lance Storms camp and been wrestling since 2008 stated honestly “What I learned this week was that I don’t know anything about wrestling. When I walked through the door I thought I knew about 60% of how to have a great match but in reality it was more close to 5%. The trainers at the camp really opened my eyes on how to improve my game and give the fans their money’s worth when I get in the ring. Then I was amazed at the positivity and information that Kevin (Von Erich) provided. In the end he was such an added bonus with Steamboat and Regal.

While Jonas have been able to be in the ring prior to the week, Joe Reiling has yet to have a match but knew the importance of getting the proper training and the luxury of having Race’s camp so close to his home in Warrensburg Missouri. Reiling stepped up the plate when Regal asked for two young men to get in the ring to work the arms. Though his experience was limited he gave a 100 percent and tried to soak in all the information that his trainers were given him. During my conversations with his fellow peers in the camp they relayed to me that he had earned their respect that week and had improved a ton from day one to the final day. Reiling stated to me that he did not know when his first match would come but the camp added to the fire to learn more to live his dream to be a pro wrestler.
I watched another Oregon native Dillon Divine as he worked under the watchful eyes of Steamboat and Regal. I was impressed with his facial expressions and Divine said it best to be when said “You get what you put out of it. So go for it.
While many of the Harley students took part in the camp one young wrestler fans at MWR are aware of is the 2010 MWR Future Star recipient Sir Bradley Charles.
The award is given not only to the wrestler MWR feels has the talent but the dedication and work ethic to become better, to be the best that they can be. SBC had been to Lance Storms camp, wrestled outside the country and is a rising star at Metro Pro Wrestling, 3xwRESTLING , NWA Dynamo and SICW but he once again proved that he is deserving of the award by seeking out more training to be the best that he can be.

At the end of the week SBC debuted for WLW as he teamed up on the Saturday show with Lee Walker. & Ethan H.D in a tough loss against the team of Ryan Drago, Jeff Strong, & Dustin Bozworth. Even though SBC did not get the “W” the skills that he learned this week will give him that much more a chance to become a star around the world.
In what was one of the most surprising moments for me during the week the students were all smiles as they told me that Regal had invited them to his hotel room on the final night to discuss wrestling in a special Q and A on the week’s events, his opinions and stories from one of the most traveled wrestlers from the past twenty years. What an invitation from a man who could of easily of stayed to himself during a time that he was not required to but instead respects the sport so much that he wanted to give back to the students who took the opportunity to take part in the camp. To say that with that bit of information from the students didn’t move Regal up on my favorites of all time would be a lie.
The week would not be complete as WLW would bring the action and love to the fans. A great night of wrestling as always added with a request from Regal to actually wrestle on the card. His opponent former WLW wrestler who has worked at WWE and ROH as well as a two time WLW Tag team champion with Matt Murphy and Superstar Steve Fender respectably.

For 5 hours Kevin Von Erich signed autograph after autograph then took photo after photo. One of the nicest guys MWR has ever met.
The night started off with the fans having a chance to meet the stars of WLW as well as Ricky Steamboat and Kevin Von Erich.

I had the honor of meeting a true Superstar on the night when I spoke to the Cauliflower Alley Club’s Karl Lauer.
Master Sgt Ira Scott, 87 yrs young and served in WW11, Korea and VietNam total over 30 yrs
He introduced me his “hero” Master Sgt Ira Scott, 87 yrs young and served in WW11, Korea and VietNam total over 30 yrs. was in the US Air Force and done everything from crew chief on fighters, to copters to bombers to medical attention in emergency and sewed up guys so would not bleed before the medics go to um. A very remarkable man and what a real hero is really all about. 5″6″ about 145 lbs and sharp as a teen ager. Later in the night WLW announcer Dan Gier would introduce him to the fans. Out of respect everyone in attendance gave the man a well-deserved standing ovation.
As fans took the time to get their autographs and pictures taken with the stars, The personal highlight of the night for me was to have a few fans come up to introduce themselves stating that they visited the site and enjoyed it.

I have many friends that I know visit the site but it truly makes it worth it when I meet new friends that check MWR out so that they may know when WLW will be back in action or an interview with an up and comer.
One of my very childhood best friends Billy Howser came up for the show on the night with his friend Steve. Billy showed great taste in women once again when the love bug hit him for the “Catholic Schoolgirl” Stacey O’Brien.

Billy bought him an 8×10 of her and wanted to know when I thought she would be at in the future as I stated that she is a star as well for Metro Pro Wrestling.
As we gear up for the first ever MWR Yearbook, I have called on friends to help me add some special features for the book. One of them is famed artist ICON who work includes the world renowned painting The Gods of Thunder painting, as seen at WWE Magazine January 2011.

When he told me of his newest project called “Fantasy Warfare” where he will be drawing two wrestlers from different eras going to war. The first one he did was former WWE Champion the Ultimate Warrior taking on current WWE Star and former WWE Champ Sheamus. I quickly asked to have a special one drawn for the 2011 yearbook and when he asked me who I would like to see go to battle I chose two of my very favorites of all-time, Harley Race vs. Kurt Angle. A match that I think could have won multiple awards throughout the years. Fans be sure to look for this great feature in the book to see who got the edge in this exclusive feature from ICON.
We had posted the importance of Kevin Von Erich coming to the Midwest prior to the show at MWR but little did we know how friendly the man was. All night long he posed for photos giving the fans the famed Von Erich Claw and signing autographs.

One friend came up to me and was impressed on how respectful his sons Marshall and Ross were to them when they asked for a photo. Their comment, Kevin raised them kid’s right. Marshall and Ross by the way took part in the camp as they look to make a name for themselves. Their dad Kevin, proudly told me how talented they were in their high school sports during a special interview with MWR.

An exciting night of action started off with one of the hottest wrestlers in the country as “The Prince” Jason Jones continued his momentum with a win against young Corey Dunken. Jones would have been a real threat for the NWA JR title if he would have been able to get in the tournament for the vacated title left by former champion Craig Classic.
The WLW women’s title has not been as red hot since Malia Hosaka and Brandi Alexander went to war for the championship.

With Ms Natural, the most decorated champion in the company’s history back in the game the fans got to see a classic as Champion Lucy Mendez showed her heart to win a match that also featured former MWR Female of the year Stacey O’Brien.

In a WLW Classic match it would be ALL THAT Matt Murphy teaming up with Steve Fender to meet Trevor Murdock and Bull Schmitt in tag action. Each of these men have been able to take the skills taught to them by Race to make multiple trips to Japan and WWE in years past and their battles have always had a special place in the WLW faithful’s hearts.

During the match Murphy looked to have a leg injury and would not be able to continue. It looked so bad that Ricky Steamboat who was watching in the bleachers with Ms. Natural came to ringside to assist Murphy.

When out of the blue, Murphy showed his true colors and attacked Murdock and Schmitt to the shock of Steamboat and the fans.
Murdock and Schmitt would be able to recover to get the win in what many fans said was one of the most special moments in WLW History. Out of respect each men hugged one another to end the match.

This past spring WLW Stars Trevor Murdock and Brian Breaker toured Japan for Pro Wrestling Noah. While the two stars were on the plane tragedy struck when Hurricane Katrina exploded on Japan. The country was left in shambles and many lost loved ones during one of the saddest moments of 2011. During intermission Harley thanked his friends at Pro Wrestling Noah for their support throughout the years. In response Pro-Wrestling NOAH Ken Hirayama and Ryu Nakata spoke to the fans. They spoke about the promises of many countries to stay and help the country during the aftermath but when it came time for action many was no where to be seen, while Switzerland and the USA were front and center with support for Japan. They then thanked the fans and the country while starting a USA Chant out of respect for the men and women of the USA for their help.
Back to action the man who is the current WLW Champion Brian Breaker would defend his title against fan favorite Jack Gamble. In what I thought was the match of the night, Gamble took a beating but refused to lay down to the champion Breaker. It looked as if the speed of Gamble may pay off but Breaker was just to good as his moves of crushing power was too much for Gamble.

In the main event it would be a wrestling clinic as Steven Regal and Ace Steel would go old school as they traded moves and punishing blows that could have been a headlined anywhere in the country.

Once again World League Wrestling proved that they provide the fans with moments that will be cherished for a lifetime. For the aspiring wrestler , they gave them a chance to become better and be seen by WWE and Pro Wrestling Noah Scouts and for the fans a chance to meet their favorites and watch wrestling the way it was meant to be.

Matt Murphy Chapter 20-23, When Things Go Awry, The Elephant in the Room, and Being Booked for WWE

Call me cruel, but I always kind of liked watching a match between two guys who’d planned every move, breath, and eye-blink in advance. If two grown men have the audacity to presume that they can control the hundreds of variables waiting to blow their plans to straight to hell, then God bless ’em. But like a NASCAR fan expecting to see a spectacular crash, I watch and wait for the carnage. Blown spots, ropes breaking, injuries, and even fan run-ins can derail a planned match.
If you blow a spot in your match, cover it the best you can. If you’re the heel and it’s in the middle of the babyface shine, cut him off and call a simple spot that puts him back on top. I used to practice blowing spots at Harley’s school so I could learn to conceal them. I’d call a spot, have my opponent mess it up on purpose, and I’d have to cover it. Then we’d switch roles. On one hand, it’s a bad idea to plan for failure; on the other hand, I knew that no wrestler is immune to the blown spot and I wanted to be prepared.
If a rope breaks, don’t panic: it happens. Be smart and safely continue your match. If the whole damn ring collapses, do the same unless instructed to do otherwise.
If your opponent gets injured, find out his status (use the referee if you need to) and, if possible, finish the match without risking further injury. If it’s a serious injury or any type of injury to the head, neck, or back, I’d advise you to end things right then. Fans can be demanding, but no reasonable person would expect a wrestler who has just been spiked on his head to get up and finish. There’s no sense in risking permanent injury just to finish a match and there’s not a standing ovation in the world worth permanent injury. Don’t try to play doctor unless you are a doctor and don’t listen to those who do. I once tore my PCL and had a half-dozen different people, including a couple wrestlers’ girlfriends who were nurses, diagnose six different (all inaccurate) injuries.
You never know the motives of a fan who interferes in a match. He may intend only to get some attention from the other fans, but he might also intend to stab out your freaking eye. Any time a fan gets involved outside the ring, get your ass in the ring immediately. Assume that his intentions are to cause you and/or your opponent harm. Don’t send him an invitation, but if the fan comes into the ring, both wrestlers and the referee should kick the absolute shit out of him until security can rescue him. Don’t resume your match until the fan is no longer a threat and you are sure that no other fans are thinking about getting involved. Deal with the consequences later, but you have to protect yourself and let other fans know that getting into the ring is off-limits and carries severe consequences. Some state commissions have specific rules pertaining to fan interference: educate yourself to and follow those rules. A promoter should instruct his security team on how to handle these situations. If a wrestler is thrown out of the ring and a fan kicks him, then the fan should be ejected swiftly and without question. The same should apply if a fan spits on a wrestler, throws contraband into the ring or at a wrestler, or does anything else to disrupt the show or put talent in danger.
NEVER touch a heckler. Under no other circumstances should you make any attempts to beat up hecklers. When some jerk-off in the crowd insults you, he’s insulting your wrestling persona, not you as a human being. There’s nothing more pathetic than the wrestler who gets physically involved with a heckler. If a fan spits on you, who cares? Let security handle him. Of course it’s gross, but if you can deal with another man’s sweat soaking into your pores during a match then you can handle a little saliva on the shoulder. Ladies, I know that it has to be annoying to those of you with any self-esteem to hear an idiot fan yell, “Show your tits.” Learn to ignore it because you’re going to hear it a lot. Always keep your composure when you’re on-stage.
The best defense against the unexpected is readiness. Misfortune doesn’t care if you’re having the match of your life, but misfortune finds well-trained, cautious, and prepared wrestlers far less often.
Chapter 21: The Elephant in the Room
In a business where nothing’s supposed to be real, the one heartbreaking reality is that professional wrestling is the most tragic business in the world. In any given year, more professional wrestlers die “before their time” than all professional athletes, actors, authors, and musicians combined.
It’s been just 20 years since Wrestlemania VI. Here’s a list of those performing that night who died before age 50: referee Joey Marella (died 1994, age 31, car accident), Andre the Giant (died 1993, age 46, heart attack), Mr. Perfect (died 2003, age 44, drug-related), Miss Elizabeth (died 2003, age 42, drug-related), Sherri Martel (died 2007, age 49, drug-related), Dino Bravo (died 1993, age 44, murdered), Big Boss Man (died 2004, age 41, heart attack), Rick Rude (died 1999, age 40, heart failure).
And over in the National Wrestling Alliance for Wrestle War 1990: Buzz Sawyer (died 1992, age 32, drug-related), Road Warrior Hawk (died 2003, age 46, heart attack), Brian Pillman (died 1997, age 35, heart disease), Woman (died 2007, age 43, murdered).

If you’re a pro baseball player in this era, you know that everybody else is taking steroids, so you have a choice of taking them and keeping your job or riding your moral high-horse all the way to the unemployment line. You use them because the guy trying to push you out of a job is taking them. If you’re a football player, you cram pain-killers down your throat and play through injuries because there is a healthy and hungry third-round draft pick right below you on the depth chart who’d love to take your spot in the starting lineup. If you’re a movie star, you’ve been awake for three days straight because you finished the last day of filming a new movie and you walked off the set directly into a media blitz for another one of your movies that’s hitting theaters next week. You need something to knock you out for the flight from L.A. to New York City and then something to get you up once your plane lands. I’m not condoning any of this, but it’s reality to some of the people who live it. Unfortunately, wrestling combines the evils of sports and entertainment.
It’s not just the drugs and alcohol: there are A-list actors and musicians who are drugged-up at this very moment and who will live to see their great-grandchildren. Life on the road, stress, and weight might be contributing factors. Wrestlers, at least in the era when wrestlers didn’t look like your paperboy, were much larger than the average guy. Heavier people have a shorter life expectancy.
The topic of wrestling unions is a dead horse I’m not going to beat other than to say that there are players’ associations, actors’ guilds, etc., to represent athletes and entertainers and nothing like that exists in wrestling. Things will never change because the talent will never unite. In wrestling and every other business, if you’re not willing to do what’s expected of you, there are hundreds of guys who will.
At its worst, wrestling is a cruel, heartless business that abuses and spits out its performers. Sadly, it seems that a lot of the former wrestlers who are doing well now are those who got in the business, made their money, and got out before they wound up broke and alone. But at its best, wrestling can be a wonderful experience like nothing else.
We’ve suffered great loss in this business and will continue to do so. Even if wrestling cleaned itself up today, many past and current wrestlers have done irreparable damage to their bodies in many different ways and will suffer the consequences. And while it’s tragic to see our heroes die young, I think some of them would tell us that the story of a man punching a time clock at a job he hates — who settled for less than everything he wanted out of life, traded his dream for a cubicle, and lived his life full of regret and sorrow until the day he died of old age — is really the tragic story.
The best we can hope for as fans of professional wrestling is that changes are made and that casualties from this generation and generations that follow are fewer than those we have dealt with from those who preceded us.
Chapter 22: Being Booked for WWE
Congratulations, you’ve just been booked for your first WWE event. This probably occurred either through a promoter or a wrestler upon whom they call regularly to provide enhancement talent (or jobbers, or extras) when they are nearby. Maybe even somebody from Talent Relations liked your promo package and wanted to take a look at you.
You’re almost certainly booked for an event that will be televised; it’s unlikely that they’d ever book you for a house show. You’re not booked to wrestle, just to show up: you get your $250 whether they have a spot somewhere for you or not. That spot, if it exists, may be to wrestle, dress up like a cop, or be a fan in the crowd. You really never know. The first time I did a show for WWE, I got to work a match (as did five others), but they also booked ten extras to sit in a strip club to get beaten up during an APA/Right to Censor brawl. That’s a rough way to make $250, eh? Look at some strippers and take a punch. On second thought, I guess it would depend on who was throwing the punch.
When you get to the show, don’t act like a fan who won a backstage pass. Don’t speak unless spoken to, interrupt a conversation between people to introduce yourself, stare at Mickie James for more than four consecutive seconds — it’s hard not to, but control yourself — or ask for autographs.
I guess things have changed now, but in my day we shared locker rooms with the WWE Superstars. During our first WWE booking, Superstar Steve and I shared a locker room with Triple-H, Kurt Angle, Al Snow, Chris Jericho, William Regal, Chris Benoit, Rikishi, X-Pac, Grandmaster Sexay, and a few others. Now I believe they have an “extras” locker room, where local talent gets dressed.
Backstage, there’s a lot going on. Just stay out of the way. You will be instructed on everything you need to do. Be the first one geared up and ready to go. I was given this advice by Kevin Kelly, a longtime WWE announcer and Talent Relations rep, and surely enough, an injury opened a spot for me (the only enhancement guy geared up) to get squashed by Justin Credible in his first televised WWE match since his Aldo Montoya days.
Understand that you are probably the only person in the building thinking about you getting a contract. Honestly, they probably aren’t even taking much, if any, of a look at you. Trevor Murdoch went there nine times before being signed. He was signed to a developmental deal because Chris Benoit noticed he was doing some stretches learned in Japan and that wrestler asked John Laurinaitis to watch him. Trevor sold his ass off during his enhancement match and they just happened to be looking for a strong-working cowboy-type at the time. The stars aligned just right: he never set foot in a developmental territory and was a World Tag Team Champion three months after doing the enhancement match.
Be ready for a match, but don’t be devastated if it doesn’t happen. Plans change by the second, and at no time during the decision-making process do they worry if your feeling will be hurt. Keep your fingers crossed, though. Who knows? You might catch their eye and the stars might align just right for you as well.

WLW Recap from Slater Missouri 4-18-2009 Fender vs. Anthony vs. Murdoch

World League Wrestling came to Slater Mo with a brand new WLW champion (Superstar Steve Fender), a former WWE Tag Team Champion (Trevor Murdoch), and a legend in Harley Race. With the stars shining bright on April 18th there was one man looking to cast his shadow on the whole evening. That man was former WLW Champion “King of the 450” Steve Anthony.
Our good friend Dan Gier was missing in action so the Slater crowd was treated with the announcing duties of former Gold Exchange manager Johnny Gold. Gold opened the night off with inviting his friend who had just lost the WLW title thanks in part because of the Rowdy one Roddy Piper in Eldon Missouri on March 21st. Anthony was quick to direct his comments to the former World Champion Harley Race. Anthony stated that “I am a gift to this company and I have a gifted body, the one with the gifted wrestling talent. There was one gift that was stolen from me and that was the coveted WLW title. Since it has been stolen from me I have had to go through men, week after week I keep coming out her and taking on an opponent but it’s not a title rematch against Fender. Harley. I know your hiding that paper champion Steve Fender, but tonight I am demanding a title shot and I am demanding that you come out here to tell the people that you are going to give me what I want.”
Anthony is one of the top talkers in the Midwest and would not stop so Race made his way to the ring to tell him” Steve you are already in a match tonight” Anthony’s reply was “It’s not a title match Harley”. Harley laid down the law and let him know that if he could win the first match then he would add him in the main event to make it a three way with Fender and Murdoch for a three way. Anthony, not happy about it but very confident in his abilities let Race and the crowd know that he was going home the WLW Champion.

The first match of the evening was Brian Breaker taking on one half of the WLW tag team Champions Darin Waid. Waid with the speed did his best to keep away from Breakers raw power. Breaker at one point tried to catch a break outside but when Waid came close enough, Breaker pulled him outside the ring to punish him with a powerful shoulder block into the ring. Breaker kept the assault and looked to have the match well in hand. Waid never quit and the frustrating was setting in on the young stud.Breaker argued with the ref enough to allow Waid to hit a huge flying clothesline off the top rope. Back and forth these young warriors went but 15 minutes just wasn’t enough and the match ended in a 15 minutes time limit draw.

Next up we had the “Vietnam Phenom” Bao Nguyen taking on the other half of the WLW Tag Team Champions Dustin Lane. Lane would be tested as Ngyuen was not in a good mood this evening and looked to do what it took to get the win. Both Lane and Nguyen have speed and can wrestle, so as I watched to see who would make the first mistake Lane was crisp early and really had Nguyens number and 7 minutes in was in complete control hitting a monkey flip in the corner and a flying body press along the way. Lane went to the well once to many and Nguyen capitalize by moving out of the way as Lane hit the floor head on. Nguyen hit a perfect kick to the head that landed Lane stretched on the second rope which prompted a fan to tell him that “You don’t have nothing”. Nguyen must had felt the need to show off because he smiled at the fan and teased a Rey Mysterio JR 619 only to stop when he got to the ropes and walk under it to kick Lane in the head instead. This prompted boos but Ngyuen looked very pleased with himself. That arrogance led to a mistake when Nguyen missed a flying punch that Lane went under, when Nguyen came back he was tripped into the corner head first. Lane looked to have momentum going his way but when he went for a backslide for a win Nguyen quickly reversed it for the surprising victory.

Anthony needed this next match but Jason Jones is young and determined and Anthony’s chance to get in the main event would have to go through him. Jones did not disappoint and was able to take it to the former WLW Champion showing signs of stardom at moments, but Anthony is on top of his game at this stage and would not be denied the rematch that he felt he deserved when he pinned Jones for the 1—2-3

Johnny Gold then announced that due to Stacey O’Brien suffered a serious shoulder injury last week in the WLW match between Amy Hennig she would not be able to wrestle that evening but Hennig wanted to come to the ring to thank the crowd for coming to show. Hennig let the fans knowfrom the bottom of her heart she appreciated them and wished that there was some competition in the area. Hennig then noticed a mysterious beautiful brunette walking to the ring which prompted her to ask “Paris (Hilton) check your children I think one of them got loose and is coming to the ring.”

The Latino princess firmly let Henning know that it’s a shame she don’t have her license tonight but by the time the next WLW has a show she challenges her for her title. Then she went personal by letter her know and I quote “Sweetheart, it is about time that someone told you that you are not your daddy. That got the blood boiling and Hennig went for a clothesline but the princess was ready as she ducked, then she hit one of her own before bailing out of the ring to fight another day.
The first WLW title of the night was on the line as the MWR Tag Team of the Month for March, Dustin Lane and Darin Waid took on Brian Breaker and Bao Nguyen. Breaker teased that he would start off against Waid but quickly tagged in Nguyen. Waid took control early and hit Nguyen with a shoulder block that sent Nguyen scrambling to the outside. Breaker and Nguyen looked to get in the heads of the young champs by stalling but this young team has grown rapidly in the past few months and remained calm. Breakers power gave his team an advantage but the inexperience showed when he went to tag in Nguyen, he did not take the time to drag his opponent to the corner which allowed Lane to get back on the offensive.

Double teams have been the method of which Lane and Waid have been able to remain the WLW Tag Team Champions and they was able to offset the power of Breaker by hitting him with a double clothesline and keeping him in there corner. While watching this match I came to the realization that Darin Waid may be one of the most underrated wrestlers in the Midwest. He was able to hit Breaker and Nguyen from everywhere and with an arsenal of moves.
Breaker used some underhand tactics to get the advantage for his team when he pulled the legs from underneath him while the ref Mark Smith wasn’t looking. Nguyen quickly took advantage with a kick, and then he tagged in Breaker who was relentless in his attack. Breaker and Nguyen tagged in and out while dismantling there opponents. Breaker hit Waid with a clothesline that was so powerful in the corner it threw Waid full body across the ropes. As Waid was stuck there Breaker picked him up and tossed him like a rag doll in the center of the ring.

It looked as if we had brand new tag team champions but Waid hit a sweet drop kick on Breaker to allow him to get the tag and change the momentum. As the action broke down all four men were in the ring as the ref Smith did his best to regain control. In the chaos Waid threw Breaker out of the ring, and then went to the top to hit Nguyen with a flying diamond Cutter for the big win.

An exciting tag team match brought us to the Main event. The World League Wrestling Champion Steve Fender defending his title in a three way with Trevor Murdoch which Johnny Gold announced “was the biggest red neck in wrestling” which brought huge cheers to the Slater crowd and the man who demanded a title shot Steve Anthony.

Fender and Murdoch who have had there shares of battles through the 10 great years have been around quickly took an understanding that they should go at Anthony. Anthony was overwhelmed and retreated out of the ring. As Fender urged Anthony to returned Murdoch struck from behind.
The battle was on between 3 former WLW Champions to see who would leave with the coveted Championship. Murdoch threw Anthony in the corner, and then he threw Fender and ran full steam ahead on top of both of them. The action was fast and furious with bodies flying everywhere. To say it was hard to keep up with all the action was an understatement. The key moment of the match came when Johnny Gold made his presence known by tripping Fender from the outside of the ring giving Anthony the win after . Harley rang the bell to let the fans know that it wasn’t going to happen like that and the tow arch enemies Gold and Race were eye to eye once again. Race hit with a left hook that sent Gold to the ground, Race picked him up and tossed him into the ring with a fired up Murdoch and Fender while Anthony snuck out of the ring leaving Gold behind Fender connected on a superkick while Murdoch kicked him out of the ring.

Murdoch wanted Fender to know that the WLW title was always special to him because it was Harley Races Champion. Tonight he (Murdoch) did not win the belt but wanted to congratulate him on being the Champion. On that moment two of the most important WLW Champions in their 10 years history shook hands out of respect.

I was able to catch up with Trevor Murdoch after the match and he had this to say about coming so close to winning the WLW Championship.
You do not want to miss World League Wrestling when they come to Waterloo Iowa on July 10th along with the Waterloo Hall of Fame. The show will have none other former NWA World Champion Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Former AWA World Champion Nick Bockwinkel and Fritz Von Goering just to name a few.
